NY Daily News: Justin Chambers reveals all about The Joshua Tree (8-25-2002)
Quite a spectacle

The after-party for the premiere of HBO's "Hysterical Blindness" was a
sight to behold.

Held at Eugene, on W. 24th St., the fest featured Patricia Field posing
for paparazzi by the bar. In the VIP room, the cast of "The Wire"
devoured mini crab cakes. Braving the dance floor, Ethan Hawke
busted

an enthusiastic move or two, sadly, without wife and "Blindness" star
Uma Thurman, who is on location in China.

Snug in a booth with her sis, niece and hubby, skateboarding hot dog
Steve Berra, "Blindness" co-star Juliette Lewis recalled her classic
makeout jams. (The film, which airs tonight, has a killer '80s soundtrack.)

"I listened to Depeche Mode's 'People Are People' the first time I ever
made out with a guy," Lewis told us. "We were in my room, just
French-kissing."

Co-star Justin Chambers would throw on U2 to get in the mood.

"I fell in love, had sex for the first time and broke up to 'The Joshua
Tree,'" he told us. "I was only 16."

Long Live The King!
Elvis, Like Rock & Roll, Will Never Die - It Was Meant To
Be That Way, And Graceland Can Tell You Why

August 25, 2002
By ERIC R. DANTON, Photos by THOMAS CORDY, The Hartford
Courant

Some say that a few hundred years from now, the world
will worship Bono from U2 as a deity. Maybe. But a heck of
a lot of people already view Elvis Presley as a holy figure,
which makes a trip to Memphis, and specifically
Graceland, a pilgrimage of sorts.

More than 75,000 fans from all over the world, many with
impressive Elvis-style sideburns, made the pilgrimage
this year to mark the 25th anniversary of Presley's death
Aug. 16.

They participated alternately in rain-soaked rituals
honoring the memory of the King and tongue-in-cheek
events poking fun at the whole concept. Either way, Elvis
was inescapable in Memphis.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: U2 mention in Abba article (8-25-2002)
Condensed from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Released in 1993, the same year Bono took to singing "Dancing Queen" on
tour with his band, U2, "ABBA Gold" remains a staple of the Billboard Top
Pop Catalog chart here in the States, which, frankly, never warmed to ABBA
half as much as everybody else. Last week, after 269 weeks on the charts,
the 19-song collection finished No. 30 with a bullet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VOA News: U2 mention in Liberty Tree Guitar article (8-25-2002)
Condensed from VOA News:

Inside Taylor Guitar's manufacturing facility near San Diego, a
worker is putting the finishing touches on an acoustic guitar.

Taylor makes tens of thousands of guitars each
year. They're bought by weekend hobbyists and
professional performers, including country star Clint
Black, folk singer Jewel and 'the Edge,' the guitarist
for the Irish rock band U2.

This year the company introduced a limited-edition
instrument called the Liberty Tree Guitar.

Boston Globe: Stargazing (8-25-2002)
Stargazing

Caroline Corr, drummer for the Irish pop group The Corrs, married her
longtime
boyfriend, Frank Woods, on Thursday in Deia, Mallorca, a Spanish destination
for the European jet set. The candlelit church ceremony was attended by U2's
Bono and The Edge. The Corrs have sold more than 27 million albums since
their
'95 debut, says the Associated Press. The band includes Caroline's
sisters, Andrea
and Sharon, and her brother, Jim.

Financial Times: Coldplay compared to U2 on latest album (8-25-2002)
Condensed from the Financial Times:

It's the follow-up to Parachutes, which has sold more than 5m copies
since its release two
years ago. Inspired initially by Radiohead, the quartet have succeeded
their heroes as the
leading angsty young men of British rock. On the evidence of this album
it's a role they relish: not
since The Verve's Urban Hymns in 1997 has there been such a self-assured
collection of
gloomy yet uplifting rock songs. You can detect the sound of The Verve
in 'Green Eyes', a
winsome acoustic love song that morphs into equally fetching
country-rock. Radiohead's
influence is still there too, especially in the excellent opening song,
'Politik', with its thrashing
guitars and changes in tempo. But the album's presiding musical spirit
belongs to U2. Listen to
singer Chris Martin on 'The Scientist', his near-falsetto faintly
cracking at the edges, and you
might be hearing a younger version of Bono. There are similar echoes
musically: the liquid
guitar-playing, and sweeping, plangent rhythms. The songs are structured
around vast, catchy
choruses that emerge like revelations, explaining and ordering the
surrounding melodies.

Launch: U2 mention in T-Rex article (8-25-2002)
New T. Rex Collection Features Earliest Recordings
Fri Aug 23, 4:57 PM ET

(8/23/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- The inclusion of early recordings by Tyrannosaurus
Rex is one of the highlights of the newly released Marc Bolan & T. Rex: 20th
Century Boy--The Ultimate Collection. For many people, it's the first
time they'll
get to hear what Marc Bolan was doing before hits like "Bang A Gong (Get It
On)" and "Jeepster" hit the radio.

Bolan's son Rolan told LAUNCH that having those tracks on 20th Century Boy
allows listeners to learn more about his father as an artist. "What's
really cool
is that they're putting all the Tyrannosaurus Rex they did early with Tony
Visconti in," he said. "That was just such basic and limited recording,
in the
sounds there and the songs. It was just such an interesting combination. It
really captured the time when he was more involved in the hippie movement,
and how the whole British scene adapted from that into the more electric
sound."

Besides T. Rex, Visconti is well known for his production work with acts
including David Bowie, the Moody Blues, U2, Thin Lizzy, and Badfinger.

Washington Post: Caroline Corr marries, power goes out (8-25-2002)
Condensed from the Washington Post:

Caroline Corr -- drummer for the Irish sibling rock group the Corrs --
married her longtime beau Frank Woods on Thursday evening in Deia de
Mallorca. Her brother and sisters were there, as well as U2's Bono and the
Edge. The power went out, so the small church was filled with romantic
candlelight . . .

YouTwo.net: Electrical Storm Lyrics (8-25-2002)
Thanks to Mike for the following:

Electrical Storm
----------------

The sea it swells like a sore head
And the night it is aching
Two lovers lie with no sheets on their bed
And the day it is breaking

On rainy days we go swimming out
On rainy days, swimming in the sound
On rainy days we go swimming out

You're in my mind all of the time
I know that's not enough
If the sky can crack
There must be some way back
For love and only love

Car alarm ?? back to sleep
You're kept awake
Dreaming someone else's dream
Coffee's cold, but it'll get you through
Compromise - that's nothing new to you

Let's see colours that have never been seen
Let's go to places no one else has been

You're in my mind
All of the time
I know that's not enough
If the sky can crack
There must be some way back
To love and only love

Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Baby, don't cry

It's hot as hell, Honey, in this room
Sure hope the weather will break soon
The air is heavy, heavy as a truck
Hope the rain will wash away our bad luck

heeeey... heeeey.....

If the sky can crack
There must be some way back
For love and only love

Electrical storm
Electrical storm
Electrical storm

Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry
Baby don't cry

making light of the matter.

The show is airing frequently on MTV and MTV2. Check

CNN Transcripts: Part 3 - Profile of Bono (8-24-2002)
KAGAN: When Bono isn't on tour or in the studio, you can find the
three-time Grammy Award winner spending time with his
four children at their Dublin home.

DEVLIN: He's a good dad. You might come into the house and discover him
wearing a conductor's uniform, bus conductor's
uniform, and giving out tickets for outside. He's a mad dad. They get in
cars and go strange places, and -- but he just loves to spend
time with his family.

KAGAN: Bono continues to be on the front lines to drop the debt of Third
World countries even if that means a little friction
among friends.

(on-camera): Because there are members of U2 that would just assume say,
"Can we just play the music?"

BONO: Yes, there is a bit of that. They fully support what I'm doing.
They just wish it wasn't so unhip. And they just wish that
some of the people that I'm hanging around with weren't so uncool.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You'll never be an outsider here. You will always be
a friend here.

BONO: Thank you.

KAGAN: But you just can't let it go?

BONO: It's worth our time and effort. And it's an everyday holocaust. We
must always remind ourselves of the situation in Africa,
because I think history, and indeed God, will judge us very harshly if
we continue to ignore it.

One life with each other...

KAGAN (voice-over): In November of 2001, Bono's lobbying paid off. He
convinced Washington officials to write a check for
$435 million. That money was sent to the World Bank to help relief the debt.

(on-camera): There are those like the treasury secretary of the U.S.,
who says, "Debt relief is not economic reform, it's not
economic development, these countries need more."

BONO: He is right. He is absolutely right. The treasury secretary here
in the United States is very interesting because he has had
experience in Africa.

KAGAN (voice-over): This past spring, Bono went with U.S. Treasury
Secretary, Paul O'Neill, to some of the most economically
ravaged parts of Africa. It was a firsthand display of aid dollars in
action and a heartbreaking tour of continued need.

BONO: Why I like them is he's annoyed, I think, by -- he's...

PAUL O'NEILL, U.S. TREASURY SECRETARY: Angry, actually.

BONO: ... getting angrier by the day as he sees the great potential of
this continent and how it's not being used, is that fair?

O'NEILL: That's fair.

BONO: That's fair. I believe in the kingdom come.

KAGAN: It's a far cry from stadium rock concerts. In the developing
world, Bono is relatively unknown.

BONO: My name is Bono. I'm a rock star. We aim to serve. When I'm on
these trips, you know, I don't feel I'm an entertainer. I'm
an activist and I may appear friendly and I may, you know, try to turn
on what little charm I have, but deep down, I'm very, very
serious about these things and I'm very angry.

Only to be with you. Only to be with you.

I don't know why I sang there. I just saw these people who really, I'm
sure, had no clue who I was and I just felt for them. You
know, some people say to me, "You're being used." I say, "I'm here to be
used and I can't change the world, but I know people who
can." That's probably the deal here.

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ZAHN: Bono says despite his political involvements, music has always
been his first love and he has no interest in becoming a
politician. That is it for this edition of PEOPLE IN THE NEWS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CNN Transcripts: Part 2 - Profile of Bono (8-24-2002)
KAGAN: Could those kids have any idea what was in store for them?

BONO: Oh, yes. No, megalomania did start at a very early age with us.
But you know it's your head that's filled with songs and
dreams and big ideas. And you're young enough and wet behind the ears
enough to believe that everything's possible.

All is quiet on New Year's Day.

KAGAN (voice-over): Two years later, in 1980, U2's dream had come true.
After much practice and polish, the band had a record
deal.

BONO: I want to be with, be with you night and day.

KURT LODER, HOST, MTV: I think it's his voice which is just this soaring
instrument, and the band really has a lot of punch and
wallop to it, and it was just their punk background. And The Edge's
guitar playing is very full, and it doesn't sound like anything else,
and it's just -- it's rousing, you know, it's inspiring to hear it. It's
a great sound.

PAUL SHAFFER, ENTERTAINER: BONO is like a motivational speaker of
rock-and-roll, isn't he?

KAGAN: But by 1982, the dynamic of the band was changing. There was
dissension over U2's direction. Bass player Adam Clayton
threatened to leave the group, indicating the band's religious overtones
as the reason.

THE EDGE, U2 GUITARIST: I think we value what we have pretty highly, and
we realize how fragile it is, you know. A band is
a very difficult thing to keep going. And when you're in a good one, you
try and kind of make it work whatever way you can.

KAGAN: But the band's strong commitment to one another turned out to be
greater than their spiritual divide. U2 remained intact.

THE EDGE: You know, I don't think any of us would have imagined we'd
still be together after so many years when we first put
the band together, but it's great that we are.

BONO: You're going to make me cry.

Blue-eyed boy, brown-eyed girl...

KAGAN: Meanwhile, on a personal note, Bono settled down with his
long-time love, Allison Stewart.

DEVLIN: I just remember that the wedding was tremendous fun. There was a
lot of dancing. There was a lot of people bumping into
each other. There was a lot of high spirits. And it was a kid's wedding,
you know, but it was a great day.

KAGAN (on camera): You're married to your high school sweetheart.

BONO: That's true, that's true. I'm lucky. I have an extraordinary
friend that I've been married to for a long time, seems like since
we were kids.

KAGAN (voice-over): Back on the road, back in the studio. By 1985, U2
had released three more albums, but failed to increase its
following.

DECURTIS: The group had become kind of frozen in some way, you know,
after the first three records. Particularly after "War,"
I think, you know, the group felt that they had become just this big
guitar band.

KAGAN: Later that year, an event at Wembley Arena in London took U2 to
another level.

GELDOF: Every band could do what they liked, but I, basically, said,
"Look, lads, it's the global jukebox. You do your hits."

KAGAN: The band, and especially Bono, gave an electrifying performance
at Live Aid, the humanitarian concert played to
audiences around the world.

GELDOF: Then I remember them going into the audience and start hugging
the girl. And of course, it was a great theatrical thing.
And so what everyone was feeling on that day, he articulated visibly by
going and just taking one person out of this sea and just
cuddling her.

BONO: It's hard to describe for me what U2 is all about, and when it
becomes U2. But I think it is probably when the band is
playing live. I think we've always -- that's the moment when we discover
what it is that makes us special.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: And can you move just out a little there?

KAGAN: A fortuneteller reportedly once told Bono's mother that she would
have a famous son. In 1987, U2 released its seventh
album, "The Joshua Tree."

BONO: With or without you, oh.

KAGAN: The record went platinum in just two days. As foretold years
before, Bono had arrived.

DEVLIN: People have asked me, When you met them, you know, what was it
like? Did you -- you know, they were kittens.
How can you say that you could see something there?

BONO: In the name of love.

DEVLIN: I didn't know how big they would be, but I could see that they
had this sense; a belief in themselves and a belief in what
music could be that was different from anyone I'd met.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: When we return, fatherhood ignites Bono's political pursuits in a
big way.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BONO: It's made me more militant. You think about the world that your
children are about to inherit, and you want it to be different
from them, so it's made me more angry.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANNOUNCER: Welcome back to PEOPLE IN THE NEWS.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN (voice-over): In the 1990s, the idea was, bigger is better.
Concert tours like Zoo TV took U2 to stratospheric heights.
Gross revenues topped $1.5 billion. Still, Bono fought to stay grounded,
always mindful of his beginnings and of the musical
influences along the way.

The 2001 Elevation World Tour would be different and far more intimate,
so close you could reach out and touch them -- 113
shows in 64 cities, playing to more than two million fans, a personal
triumph.

BONO: This has been the best year of our musical life and maybe my
personal life actually with it.

KAGAN (on camera): A new baby.

BONO: And a new baby.

KAGAN (voice-over): But in the midst of that, person tragedy for Bono.

BONO: I lost my father also. But, you know, he had a good life and we
gave him quite a send-off. And I still think about him
every day.

Profiles of Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Bono
With Paula Zahn, Mike Meckler, Daryn Kagan

ANNOUNCER: Next on PEOPLE IN THE NEWS, the surprising side of three
veteran rockers...

PAULA ZAHN, HOST: Hi, welcome to PEOPLE IN THE NEWS, I'm Paula Zahn.
With Bruce Springsteen still rising
and the Stones ready to roll again, it appears the rock world has saved
the best for last this summer. Rock royalty is
hitting the road from Aerosmith to Ziggy Stardust. This week, a look at
some of those musical veterans still rocking
after all these years...

ZAHN: ...Usually, when Bono of U2 has something to say, he puts it to
music, but recently Bono has been doing as
much sounding off as singing. Bono has become an outspoken advocate for
debt relief in the Third World. It's just the
latest cause for this rocker with a conscience. Here's Daryn Kagan.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DARYN KAGAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): He's the charismatic and
often controversial lead singer
of U2. In whatever he does, Bono demands your attention. He certainly
demands it at his concerts and his fans seem
happy to comply. And world leaders listen too. They give him VIP access
to voice his message -- reducing the debt of
Third World countries.

BONO: We want the rich countries to drop the debts that they're owed to
them by the poorest countries.

KAGAN: It's an abstract message, but Bono helped give it a human face
when he traveled with U.S. Treasury Secretary
Paul O'Neill on tour of Africa this past May. Our CNN crews followed the
unlikely duo as they traveled across the
continent, seeing for themselves the tragedy of children with AIDS and
the ravages of poverty in countries battled with
debt.

(on-camera): This is not the kind of issue that most rock stars are
drawn to.

BONO: Right.

KAGAN: Why are you drawn to it?

BONO: The relationship between the so-called First and Third World is
just so screwed up. We give the tiniest percentage
of our GDP and -- every year toward the problem. I mean it's a shocking
statistic when you tell Americans or Europeans
that the richer they get, the less they give.

One life with each other, sisters...

KAGAN (voice-over): For Bono, his life's work is all about the
possibility, a theme that can be heard in the songs he sings.

BONO: ... we get to carry each other, carry each other. Music is more
about soul and spirit than it is about, you know,
anything concrete like politics. In order to be able to perform the way
I perform, I have to kind of step inside the songs,
you know.

Give peace a chance.

KAGAN: Yet to truly step into Bono's world, you have to know where and
how it began, in the Irish neighborhood of
Ballymun, wedged between countryside and city.

BOB GELDOF, MUSICIAN: He was brought up in an area of Dublin that's a
fairly normal area. It's beside a pretty crap
area, but Dublin's quite like that.

KAGAN: Number 10 Cedarwood Road. As a child, he wasn't Bono but Paul
David Hewson, the youngest of two boys.
His father was a postal worker delivering the daily mail, while his
mother took care of the home.

From very early on, the youngest Hewson was a dreamer, emulating his
distant heroes -- King, Dylan, and Ali, cultural
icons who fought for social change.

BONO: And, you know, when I was younger, used to kind of throw rocks and
stones at, you know, the bad guys, as I saw
them, you know, in the political establishment, the people who were --
you know, they were -- you know, they were, it turns
out, quite easy targets.

KAGAN: But that all changed in 1972, when Paul Hewson entered the very
progressive Mount Temple High School, a place
where your religion, the color of your skin, and what your father did
for a living had no consequence.

COLIN MACKENZIE, FORMER HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC TEACHER: I think only in a
school like Mount Temple
could they -- these four fellows have met, because they were from four
totally different backgrounds. And I feel only here they
would have jelled, they would have met. They couldn't have met in --
probably in any other school.

KAGAN: Yet Paul's happy teen years would be tempered by tragedy. On
September 10, 1974, Paul's mother died. He
adored her, and according to a friend, Bob Geldof, his mother's death
tore Paul apart.

GELDOF: His mum died, I think, when he was 13 or 14, and I think that
had a very profound effect on him, as it does on us
all.

KAGAN: His senior year was pivotal. He fell in love with a girl, Allison
Stewart, and he signed up for an audition to join a
rock band.

BARRY DEVLIN, FRIEND: You know the story of how they started. Larry
Mullen put a notice up on the notice board in
their school, and they were all schoolmates, so Bono always refers to
Larry as the man who gave us all a job.

BONO: Yes, Larry started it all, you know, and he hasn't really let us
forget it.

DECURTIS: The idea of being in a band was a bigger thing than whether or
not you could play your guitar or you could sing
or you would -- had any reason to think you could be in a band. Just the
very idea of creating music was something that
gripped people.

KAGAN: And that's all these four Irish boys had, the idea of creating
music. Paul couldn't sing or play the guitar, but he was
given a stage name, Bono, likened after this Dublin hearing-aid store.
Early names for the band included The Hype and Feedback,
for their distinctive sound of music.

(on camera): If you go back to the early days of the group, even before
you were U2, names like Feedback...

BONO: Ooh, I hate when people do the research. Yes, we were just a bunch
of kids really, you know, at school. I mean, Larry
was 14, Edge was 15, Adam was 16. I was 16, just kind of hanging around
with each other. We formed a band before we could
play our instruments. It was really like a street gang, you know, people
who are joined by the sense of humor and their sense of,
you know, what they're against more than what they're for. And, yes, we
were a pretty crap wedding band, actually.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: When the story of Bono continues, the band dreams of getting
discovered.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PAUL MCGUINNESS, MANAGER, U2: It was very hard to get a record deal,
because, quite honestly, there wasn't -- it wasn't
like everyone wanted to have them. No one did.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

ANNOUNCER: We now return to PEOPLE IN THE NEWS.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN (voice-over): By 1978, the band had a new name, U2, recalling an
American spy plane shot down over Soviet air space
during the Cold War.

Dublin band manager, Paul McGuinness, went to review the newly named
band. What he heard was a blend of spiritual rock and
a call for political healing. McGuinness understood stage performance
and talent, and he saw great potential in its lead singer, Bono.

MCGUINNESS: It's the primary colors of rock and roll, guitar and bass
and drums and vocal. And four guys on a stage making
an enormous noise and producing something very exciting.

KAGAN (on camera): We found a little photo album for you.

BONO: Oh.

KAGAN: Take us through these, OK? Who's that?

BONO: Nothing's changed, really. Wow. That's a photograph taken just
before we caught the ferry to go to the U.K., coming out
of Dublin. We're all kind of 16, 17. We're going off to try and get a
record deal.

Irish Mirror: I'll Rock Slane Tonight...But Bono Will Always Be King of
the Castle (8-24-2002)
From The Irish Mirror:

I'll Rock Slane Tonight...But Bono Will Always Be King of the Castle
Stereophonics Kelly Admits He Isn't a Patch on U2 Star

By Paul Martin, Ireland's No1 Showbiz Writer

He'll be crowned the king of Slane tonight, but Sterophonics star Kelly
Jones says he isn't a patch on Bono.

The Welsh singer will rock 60,000 fans one year after Bono and U2
thrilled three times as many at the
famous venue.

And as he prepared for the band's finest hour, Jones admitted: "I'll
never be as big as Bono, he is a legend."

The star, 28, formed a bond with the Irish rock heroes during U2's
Elevation tour last year. Jones revealed:
"I was out partying with Bono every night and it was pretty clear he is
a very special person.

"I would be stumbling back to my hotel at 3am and Bono would still be
there living it up at 5am.

"The next morning I would be lying in bed dying of a hangover and he
would be out meeting world leaders
and making big speeches before breakfast.

"There is a fire burning inside that man and he leaves all the other
people in rock music standing.

"Even though his dad was very ill then, he still had time for the world
and its problems.

"That really is something special, so when I play Slane I won't even try
to beat what he did last year."

Jones has had to adjust to overnight stardom since the Stereophonics
burst into the charts three years ago.

Hits such as Handbags And Gladrags and Mr Writer have rewarded him with
a lifestyle most his age only
dream of.

But it is not something he has adjusted to easily.

"We were a down and out band for years playing all the small rubbish
venue," Jones recalled.

"So nobody is preparing you for fame and all the things that go with it.
It's a completely different world.

"Suddenly you have photographers following you everywhere and you can't
even go food shopping like
you used to.

"But I'm not going to be one of these people who complains about it.

"For God's sake, I get to do the thing I love and get paid for it. I was
at a music festival and the Radiohead
guys were all moping around back stage looking as if the world was about
to end.

"I can't stand that kind of attitude in this business.

"The problem is they have never had to do a real job and they take it
all for granted.

"If I ever get to that stage then I want someone to come and tell me to
get the hell out of the business."

Jones is known for being one of the most outspoken men in rock'n'roll.

But despite controversial rants against top acts over the years, he
insists he has no intentions of becoming
the next Liam Gallagher.

"I don't feel the need to say controversial things just to make a name
for myself," he continued. "In the music
business there's always pressure to stay in the public eye and I reckon
lots of the big stars just mouth off so
they are in the papers.

"The bottom line is you should be relying on your music to get attention
- not what you have to say." While
making his name as a rock star Jones has become something of a sex
symbol too.

He explained: "I don't get it at all because I'm not particularly
handsome or musclular or anything.

"I read a story and they it says things like 'Sex symbol Kelly Jones'
and I have to start laughing.

"The magazines are always trying to get you to take your clothes off.

"I think they know it's something a bit different but there's only so
many times you can do that before it
becomes boring.

"Anyway, I don't think women want to see my body plastered all over
their magazine covers."

Like it or not, Jones earns more than his fair share of attention when
he steps out in public.

But he comes from the small south Wales village of Cwmaman - a less than
glamorous place that is a million
miles from the world of showbiz. "It certainly keeps my feet on the
ground," he added. "When you go back
there nobody cares if you are famous.

"It's a lot like Ireland, because people here aren't overly impressed
with stars either.

"If you start running around with a big ego somebody is quick to put you
back in your box.

"I love coming to Ireland because we always have an amazing time.

"There's something about Dublin that makes you want to forget all your
troubles and just have fun.

"Some people do drugs for escapism, but I find going to Dublin far more
enjoyable.

"I think that's why I've never felt that comfortable with the showbiz
party scene - it all seems so fake."

Band mates Richard Jones, who plays bass, and drummer Stuart Cable also
lived in the village.

Despite the unlikely surroundings, Jones began singing in bands at the
age of 11 and he soon emerged as a local
talent.

He said: "It's not the kind of place where record company scouts visit
so you have to really work hard.

"We had to play every crappy bar for years before we got noticed and had
our first album out.

"But I know what it's like to really struggle for something and that has
stayed with me throughout my career."
The years spent paying their dues has left Jones and the band with a
strong sense of professionalism - so there
are no pre-gig antics.

He explained: "You have to give the fans 100 per cent and that isn't
possible if you go on stage p***ed.

"We might have a beer or two, but getting drunk is unacceptable and none
of us would let that happen.

"After the show we will be partying until the cows come home - but we
have to earn that Guinness with a
great performance first.

"I've extended my stay in Ireland for a night out- it's far too good an
opportunity to pass up."

Irish Independent: Stars come out for fairytale wedding (8-23-2002)
From The Irish Independent:

Stars come out for fairytale wedding

A BEAUTIFUL 12th-century village high in the mountains on the Spanish
island of Majorca provided the fairytale setting yesterday for the
wedding of rock star drummer Caroline Corr.

The beaming bride emerged from the small church in the village of Deia
with her husband, Dublin property developer Frank Woods, and
posed happily for photographs to thedelight of locals and tourists.

Caroline wore a stunning white full length gown with a simple matching
pearl pendant necklace and bracelet. The groom wore an open-
necked white shirt and black suit.

Caroline was accompanied by her bridesmaid sisters, Sharon and Andrea,
who wore matching elegant satin cherry dresses. The fourth
member of the Corrs, brother Jim, was also there and the bride was given
away by her father, Gerry.

Some of the best-known names from the world of showbiz attended the
wedding, including U2 band members. Bono wore his signature
dark glasses and a grey suit with a grey silk flower-embroidered tie,
and his wife Ali wore a sophisticated black dress. The Edge wore his
trademark black woolly hat, an embroidered white shirt and a two-piece
beige suit, while his wife Morleigh wore a green silk top and
knee-length silver skirt. Racing driver Eddie Jordan and DJ Tony Fenton
were also spotted mingling among the guests.

The wedding ceremony was held in the village's small picturesque stone
church and was due to start around 6pm but was delayed due to
a power failure.

However, the ceremony then went ahead by candlelight in the flower-laden
church, which added to the atmosphere as the couple
exchanged vows .

The church was decked out in white roses and lilies, special hymns were
performed and an orchestra played during the ceremony.

Afterwards, the wedding party appeared outside for photographs, with the
newlyweds kissing and appearing very relaxed.

Security was minimal and both locals and tourists watched as the wedding
party posed for pictures and enjoyed the evening sunshine
before heading to a nearby luxury hotel to continue the celebrations.

Last night, the couple threw a lavishreception at the five-star
Residentia Hotel.

Andrea had arrived with her boyfriend, Giles Baxendale, on Monday and
the chart-topping Corrs performed a special song at the reception.

One entire floor of the ?750-a-night hotel was booked out by the wedding
guests, while the honeymoon suite was decked out with muslin
and white lilies.

The top hotel is popular with such stars as Michael Douglas, Rod
Stewart, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith.

Extra security staff were drafted in to ensure privacy for the celebrity
wedding.

The couple got engaged in April after a five-year relationship. They
first met in a nightclub and quickly became an item.

Rumours were rife when Caroline moved out of Frank's home in Dublin
shortly before the wedding of her sister, band violinist Sharon, to
Gavin Bonnar in Co Clare last summer. However, earlier this year, she
moved back in with him and their wedding plans were finalised.

Frank has jetted all over the world to watch Caroline perform with the
hit family band. A friend said: "They are closer than ever now."

Deia is one of Europe's most idyllic locations and is popular with
wealthy holidaymakers. The old church is surrounded by pine woods,
olive trees, terraced hillsides and ancient cobbled streets that wind
down to the sea.

The Corrs Drummer Marries in Candelit Island Ceremony

Caroline Corr, drummer of the Irish pop group The Corrs, married her
longtime love, Dublin property tycoon Frank Woods
on Thursday evening on the Spanish island of Majorca.

The Roman Catholic service, attended by a small group of family and

The couple opted for summer casual for the nuptials, with the bride in a
long white gown and little jewellery, and the groom
in a dark suit, open-collared shirt and no tie. And the newlyweds
requested no wedding presents -- instead, guests were
asked to make a donation to the UK charity Cancer and Leukaemia In
Childhood.

Frank asked Caroline to marry him while on holiday in Paris last April,
following a brief split in their five-year relationship.

is on honeymoon after tying the knot with a Dublin
property developer in a mountain village on the Spanish island of Majorca.

Caroline Corr wore a full-length white gown and pearl necklace to swap
vows Thursday with Frank Woods in a candlelight
church wedding in Deia, Irish newspapers reported on Friday. Her sisters
and bandmates Sharon and Andrea served as
bridesmaids, and the fourth member of the Corrs, brother Jim, was also
on hand.

Security was relaxed, despite the presence of such luminaries as Bono
from U2 and Formula One driver Eddie Jordan -- and
at the reception afterwards, the four Corrs took to the stage to perform
a song for the guests.

From The Daily Telegraph:

Candle-lit wedding for Corr sister
By Andrew Hibberd

Caroline Corr, drummer in the Irish pop band The Corrs, yesterday
married her long-term boyfriend, Frank Woods, a millionaire
property developer from Dublin.

The couple married in the village of Deya, Majorca, a popular retreat
for the European jet set and where the groom's brother has
a villa. The wedding, which took place in a candle-lit church after a
storm knocked out electricity supplies, had been expected to
take place next week.

It was followed by a reception, rumoured to have cost pounds 250,000, at
the five star La Residencia Hotel, which was owned
until recently by Sir Richard Branson. Rooms cost from pounds 500 a night.

Among the celebrities present were Bono and the Edge of the Irish band
U2. The singer Ronan Keating was also invited.

Miss Corr, 29, wearing a simple white wedding dress and no veil, arrived
at the church in a Rolls Royce, but the couple left in a
tiny Fiat.

The bride was given away by her father, Gerry. Andrea and Sharon, her
sisters and band mates, were bridesmaids and their
brother Jim was also there.

Miss Corr and Mr Woods became engaged in April after what had been
reported as a "fairly turbulent" five-year relationship.

Stars Turn Out for Wedding in the Sun That Ended Up Not So Secret After All
Corr, What A Lovely Bride!

By Nicola Tallant

Stunning pop star Caroline Corr broke a million hearts yesterday when
she said "I do" to fiance Frank Woods at a secret wedding ceremony.

The 29-year-old drummer married her long-time property developer
boyfriend in front of friends and family on the Spanish island of Majorca.
Sisters Andrea and Sharon, brother Jim and father Gerry Corr were at the
second Corr wedding in two years.

The couple jetted into the holiday island earlier this week and stayed
at the five-star La Residentia hotel where Caroline topped up her tan.

But determined not to turn their wedding into a media circus, the couple
checked out of the hotel on Wednesday and moved to a less
highprofile hotel just a few miles away.

However they happily posed for an Irish Daily Express photographer
before the ceremony. They held a reception back at the hotel after a
traditional Roman Catholic wedding ceremony.

Sister Sharon and her barrister husband Gavin Bonner, who wed last year,
partied into the night. And sister Andrea and boyfriend Giles
Baxendale, former manager of Charlotte Church, soaked up the
Mediterranean sun as they celebrated with friends.

The couple are delaying their honeymoon until after this weekend when
they will return to Dublin to host a celebrity reception for friends
who couldn't make the trip.

The party on Saturday is expected to be attended by comedian Patrick
Kielty and girlfriend Amanda Byram, Bono's friend and artist Guggi
and musician Gavin Friday, nightclub boss Robbie Fox and possibly
members of U2. Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood is also on the guest list.

Millionaire tycoon Woods popped the question to stunning Caroline last
May, just months after they reunited following a painful split.

She agreed to marry him after he whisked her off on a romantic weekend
to Paris.

The Express: U2 Star Pushes JJ72 for Major Rock Award (8-23-2002)
From The Express:

U2 Star Pushes JJ72 for Major Rock Award
By Jane Young

U2's Larry Mullen has nominated rising Irish group JJ72 for a top
American music award.

The drummer has joined stars including Alanis Morissette, Iggy Pop and
Moulin Rouge film director Baz Luhrmann on the judging
panel of the second annual Shortlist Music Prize.

He and 22 fellow "listmakers" including India Arie, Beck, Paul Oakenfold
and Metallica's Lars Ulrich have each nominated five
albums from emerging music talents around the world. Larry's five
favourites include JJ72 for their eponymous debut album that
was a big hit in Ireland and the UK.

The Dublin-based rockers are the only Irish artists listed in the 115
international nominations. Larry's list also features Icelandic
pop queen Bjork, rock acts The Hives and The Doves and solo artist
Andrew WK.

The judges now have the job of whittling down all the selections to 10
top albums. JJ72 will not know if they have made the shortlist
until it is announced on September 16.

The overall winner will be chosen by Mullen and the rest of the panel at
an awards ceremony in Los Angeles on October 29.

Icelandic rock act Sigus Ros won the first Shortlist Music Prize last
year. The group received a E10,000 award and a E10,000
donation in their name to a September 11 relief charity of their choice.

JJ72, who say they plan to follow in U2's footsteps, are getting ready
to release their second album I To Sky, two years after their
debut. A single, Formulae, is out on September 16.

Lead vocalist Mark Greaney has no doubts that the album, set for release
on September 30, is going to become a worldwide smash
hit.

"I know this will be better than the first one, because the songs are
there, " he said. "We could have gone in six months ago and come
out with substandard songs but we've waited, got our heads together. I
want it to be played in any country all over the world and make
sense."

The Express: Corr Drummer Caroline Is Such a Beautiful Bride (8-23-2002)
From The Express:

Corr Drummer Caroline Is Such a Beautiful Bride

Pop star Caroline Corr married her property tycoon fiance yesterday on
the island of Majorca.

Caroline, 29, the drummer in the family band The Corrs, is the second of
her musical siblings to tie the knot. Her sister Sharon,
32, wed barrister Gavin Bonnar last summer.

Sharon and lead singer Andrea, 28, were bridesmaids yesterday while U2
star Bono and Caroline's brother Jim, the only male
member of the band, were on a guest list of just 30 family and close
friends.

Caroline and bridegroom Frank Woods requested no wedding presents.
Donations went instead to the UK charity Cancer and
Leukaemia in Childhood.

The reception was understood to be at the island's exclusive La
Residencia hotel where rooms cost GBP 500 a night.

The hush-hush wedding will be followed by a lavish party in Dublin later
this month.

The Mirror: Up the Altar in Majorca (8-23-2002)
From The Mirror:

Up the Altar in Majorca
Love Rains in Spain as Storms Nearly Wreck Corrs Beauty's Big Wedding Day

Caroline Corr's fairytale Spanish wedding went ahead yesterday - but
only after freak thunder storms threatened to ruin her big day.

The superstar drummer, 28, tied the knot with Dublin property developer
Frank Woods in a beautiful mountainside church.

But the ceremony almost turned to disaster when an electric storm cut
all power to the tiny Majorcan village of Deia - and the priest
called the ceremony OFF. Moments later he changed his mind despite
floods and lightning after an anxious plea from Caroline.

Villagers flocked to the St John The Baptist church with candles in an
effort to generate enough light to allow the ceremony to continue.

Caroline chose the picturesque village so the ceremony could be in the
sunshine.

But as the drama unfolded guests including Bono, his wife Ali, Eddie
Jordan and The Edge watched in disbelief from the hill leading
up to the church.

They were finally allowed into the church at 5pm but Bono - whose new
single is called Electric Storm - and Ali were smuggled in the
back door.

But the tense build-up didn't stop Caroline from looking like a million
dollars when she arrived at the church at 5.35pm.

Onlookers gasped approval when she stepped out of a black limousine in a
striking traditional white dress.

Her bridesmaids - sisters Andrea and Sharon - followed wearing long red
silk dresses and clutching flowers as she was led down the
aisle by father Gerry.

Close friends, members of family and celebrities watched on during the
hour -long ceremony.

After exchanging vows at the hillside church - the newlyweds held an
extravagant pounds 400,000 reception at the exclusive La
Residentia hotel. White lilies and roses were placed on all the tables
and guests were greeted with champagne and cocktails.

One wedding guest said: "We were all devastated for Caroline because it
was cancelled at one stage. The priest just said that the church
had been blacked out and there was no way it could go on. But then all
the villagers got involved and we all did our bit to help.

"It was an extraordinary rollercoaster ride of a day and some of the
guests looked a little bewildered."

The wedding was surrounded by a huge security operation to stop fans and
paparazzi gatecrashing.

But they were more busy trying to keep local floods away from the church
doors as guest watched the ceremony.

One explained: "We are meant to be keeping an eye on the surrounding
areas but the biggest threat is the rain.

"We are used to doing big wedding ceremonies like this but the weather
has given us an unexpected problem."

A pal of the bride said Caroline saw the funny side of the frantic build up.

She said: "She joked 'maybe someone is trying to tell us something'.

"At first she heard that the church had a power cut and she was nervous
then.

"But when all the villagers started helping it was like something out of
a movie.

"The ceremony was simple but very beautiful. Everyone seemed to be
enjoying themselves.

"Caroline looked stunning and so did her sisters. Jim was dressed in
black and white."

The Mirror: 'Fleecing' Sounds Fair (8-23-2002)
From The Mirror:

Sorted: 'Fleecing' Sounds Fair
By Andrew Penman & Michael Greenwood

Ticket agency LatestEvents.com hated our last story about its operation.

We reported how it advertised a U2 concert in Amsterdam that was never
scheduled to take place. Fans who bought tickets in
good faith were later told that the non-existent show had been cancelled.

But they got only partial refunds - at least until we stepped in.

The company took us to the Press Complaints Commission, which has now
ruled that Sorted was in the right. It told The Daily
Mirror: "The Commission could not take a view on whether there had been
a deliberate 'fleecing of music fans' as the article
suggested, but considered that your newspaper was entitled to take the
stance it did given that it presented the facts accurately.

"Readers would be able to decide for themselves whether customers had
been purposefully duped."

LatestEvents is the trading name of Total Entertainment Ltd of South London.

Yesterday we called co-director Andrew Totten to ask about tickets his
firm has been selling for Bruce Springsteen in Arnhem,
Holland, on October 24 - when the Boss will be in Stockholm, Sweden.

Totten said: "Arnhem was the date we were told was going ahead but it
hasn't caused any problems and the two people who
booked on it, one of them we've even refunded the flight. I can assure
you we are not a dodgy company, Mr Penman. Where do
you live?"

Perhaps he plans to pop round for a coffee...

Billboard: Shortlist Prize's 'Long List' Announced (8-23-2002)
Condensed from Billboard:

Shortlist Prize's 'Long List' Announced

A total of 75 albums make up the "Long List" from which the finalists
for the second annual Shortlist Prize for Artistic
Achievement in Music will be chosen. Chosen by a celebrity-packed panel
of musicians, filmmakers, and others, the Long
List reflects a diverse mix of music -- from U.K. soul/electronica act
Zero 7's "Simple Things" (Palm Pictures) and the shredding
rock of "Source Tags & Codes" (Interscope) by ...And You Will Know Us By
The Trail Of Dead to rap veteran Masta Ace's
"Disposable Arts" (JCOR) and the darkly perverse "Blood Money" (Anti)
by the inimitable Tom Waits.

The full Long List is printed below, and is accessible on the Shortlist
Web site. The site also features streaming versions
of full-length songs from the many of the nominated albums.

"Think of the Long List as your adventurous CD shopping list," Shortlist
Music Project co-founder Greg Spotts said in
a statement. "There is something on the Long List for everyone, and each
album was hand-picked by a
well-known artist, producer, or journalist."

As previously reported, the Shortlist panel is made up of 23
individuals, including the recently added Alanis Morissette
and U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Others artists involved include Iggy
Pop, India.Arie, Beck, Mos Def, Sonic Youth's
Kim Gordon, Paul Oakenfold, Jill Scott, and Metallica's Lars Ulrich.
Film directors Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge")
and Spike Jonze ("Being John Malkovich") are also on the panel.

Each "listmaker" nominated five albums for the Long List. Titles had to
be released in the U.S. between July 2001 and
August 2002 and have sold fewer than 500,000 copies at the time of
nomination. Panel members will now pare the list
down by selecting 10 albums each, with the top vote-getters becoming
Shortlist finalists. The winner will be selected by
the listmakers at an Oct. 29 awards ceremony and concert at Los
Angeles' Knitting Factory.

Interestingly, albums by two members of the panel are also on the Long
List. Sonic Youth's "Murray Street" (DGC) and
"In Search Of..." (Virgin) by N.E.R.D., which is made up of members of
the production team the Neptunes, were both
nominated by the committee.

Among the individual artists picks, India.Arie nominated Cee-Lo's
"Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections"
(Arista), and Jonze had the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink
Robots" (Warner Bros.) among his choices.
Morissette named another female singer songwriter, Beth Orton
("Daybreaker," Astralwerks) to her list, while the
Roots' Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson nominated electronic act Jazzanova
("In Between," Ropeadope).

Ryan Adams is the only artist to have made the long list for both years
of the Shortlist competition. This year, his Lost
Highway album "Gold" follows last year's nomination of "Heartbreaker"
(Bloodshot).

Last year's inaugural event saw listmakers that included Beck, Macy
Gray, Aimee Mann, Mos Def, and Thompson
choose Icelandic rock act Sigur Ros' "Agaetis Byrjun" (Fat Cat) as the
first Shortlist Music Prize honoree. The group
received $10,000 and a $10,000 donation in its name to a Sept. 11th
relief charity of its choice. Sigur Ros and fellow
finalists Talib Kweli, Dandy Warhols, and Nikka Costa performed during
the ceremony.

Dominion Post: Playing Tribute (8-22-2002)
Thanks to Mike for the following.

Condensed from The Dominion Post (New Zealand):

Playing Tribute

Scoffed at by some as an inferior form of musical expression, tribute
bands have gained hugely in popularity in recent times.

by Tom Cardy
The Dominion Post
August 22nd 2002

In the past year Wellington has been treated to some of the biggest
names in show business. Pink Floyd, The Bee Gees, The Beatles and U2
have all played here... Well, sort of.

What we have, in fact, been treated to is a selection of increasingly
slick and popular tribute bands. Standing in for Pink Floyd is the
nine-piece Pink Floyd Experience and for the brothers Gibb, it's the
brothers Madsen from Nelson. For The Beatles read The Zeatles, and for
Irish rockers U2 we have The U2 Tribute Show - which will be performed
tomorrow night in the Capital.

Mark Walley, 30, by day runs an artists' agency in Wellington,
specialising in covers bands. Tomorrow night he'll not only sing like
Bono, but in Elevation-period leather jacket, he'll look like him too.
"For us personally, it's a case that it has to be 100 per cent right and
that's what we strive for," he says.

Walley and the rest of the band have performed several times in
Wellington and smaller centres, including Masterton, since their first
gig at Zeal in the Capital about 12 months ago. Of high importance to
the band is that it be as close as possible to the real thing. That
doesn't just mean playing and singing note-for-note like U2. It means
having the same look, moves and clothes. Even its photograph for
tomorrow's show mimics the one on the U2 single Walk On. So it's no
surprise when Walley mentions that band members spent two years
rehearsing before they unveiled the show or that they watched countless
U2 concert videos. "[It's] a worrying amount of time I can assure
you," he jokes.

"We've strived to do it note-for-note, movement-for-movement, really. It
sounds a bit strange, but it's quite different to a lot of tribute
acts out there," he says, citing Pink Floyd Experience that emphasise
sounding like Pink Floyd over looking exactly like the band's members.
"We try to go a step further and border on theatre. We try to imitate
them and convince people that they are not only hearing something that
sounds just like U2, but it's almost like a private little U2 concert.
It's off the wall a tad, but it's important to us insofar as we want to
be away from a band just playing the music."

The band has based its performance on some of U2's shows, including the
Popmart tour and the recent Elevation tour. Walley says that in
future it will sample other U2 periods to keep the show fresh. The band
also hopes to take the show to Christchurch and Auckland before
the end of the year.

But why U2? "I've been a huge fan of U2 since I was a kid. In some
ways my own voice developed along [Bono's] lines because I was always
singing it. Even as a young kid I always wanted to play in a band that
played a lot of U2, but I didn't quite envisage it would go this far."

So who comes along? Walley says a good chunk are big U2 fans, but by
word of mouth the mix is growing. The oldest would be in their
mid-50s, with most fans aged 25 to 40. "That tends to be where the
die-hard fans are."

Walley hasn't been mistaken for Bono off stage - unlike some American
tribute bands. He's also aware that some people scoff at tribute shows
and are puzzled at why anyone would want to imitate a favourite band.
But no one has criticised him directly, he says. "The support has been
really good. In New Zealand the Pink Floyd Experience has lent a hand
to other similar acts due to their quality. It just gives credibility
to the whole thing."

The Pink Floyd Experience has been performed several times in
Wellington, including the Opera House last year where the most expensive
tickets were $50.

than the Real Thing) can be obtained

Condensed from The Press Association:

Club Is One of London's Hottest Celebrity Nightspots

The members-only Wellington club in Knightsbridge has a stellar
clientele including regulars Kate Moss, Jude Law and Johnny
Lee Miller.

When each new celebrity visits a bottle with their name on it is placed
in a special glass cabinet - there are already about 100
on display. The list reads like a catalogue of entertainment's most
famous names including Bono and Mick Jagger.

The 250-capacity club is on two floors, with the ground floor home to a
luxuriant dining area dominated by cream leather chairs
and candle-laden tables.

On a wall next to where Chelsea stars Jody Morris and John Terry were
drinking one of Madonna's T-shirts has pride of place.

The star gave it to the club after she visited with husband Guy Ritchie.

Nearby is a DJ box with a sound system which Radio One's Pete Tong
helped to set up.

On a split-level above the bar are cappuccino-coloured sofas underneath
Greek icons bearing the faces of Kate Moss, Bono and
artist Damien Hirst.

Art worth £1 million by Hirst adorns the walls, including a giant dot
painting which dominates the basement bar.

In an adjacent corridor there are pictures of the club's members when
they were children.

It is also a favourite spot for Chelsea stars and is more laid back than
other footballers' haunts such as China White.

Players' spotted at the club include Mark Bosnich and Celestine Babayaro.

U2 to release new single 'Electrical Storm' in October - the leader
track from this autumn's Greatest Hits 1990-2000

U2 have confirmed the release of a new single in late October called
'Electrical Storm'.

Recorded in Dublin, London and France, it's one of the bonus tracks
earmarked for their Greatest Hits 1990-2000 package which
comes out on DVD on November 4 and CD on November 11.

Despite reports elsewhere, there are no plans to release a second DVD
featuring last year's triumphant Slane homecoming,
although the concert will receive a TV screening in the near future.

As revealed several months ago in Hot Press, U2 have covered 'Beat On
The Brat' for the upcoming Ramones tribute album, We're
A Happy Family. After numerous delays, the 17-track collection is now
set for November 5 release through Columbia.

Says project co-ordinator Rob Zombie: "As we started confirming people
like Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2, everyone was like,
'Now I want to do it!'"

It's certainly an incredible line-up with Metallica, Kiss, Marilyn
Manson, Garbage, Green Day, The Pretenders, Tom Waits and Eddie
Vedder also getting in on the act.

Finally on the U2 front, Larry Mullen has been drafted onto the judging
panel for the Shortlist Music Prize. The American equivalent
of the Mercury, his fellow arbiters of good taste include Alanis
Morissette, Iggy Pop, Beck, Mos Def, India.Arie, Paul Oakenfold, The
Neptunes, Jill Scott, Baz Luhrmann, The Strokes, and Sonic Youth.

Irish Echo: Morton to act up a 'Storm' in U2 video (8-22-2002)
From The Irish Echo:

Morton to act up a 'Storm' in U2 video
By Eileen Murphy

We certainly hope that the guys in U2 -- all of whom have entered the
fortysomething zone -- aren't planning to take their lead
from wrinkly rockers like Aerosmith or the Rolling Stones. Those bands
have made a point of casting only pretty young models
and actresses in their videos. They seem to think makes them look
cutting-edge and hip, but really, it just makes them look like
they're in danger of breaking a hip.

This thought occurred to us recently when we heard that U2 has hired
actress Samantha Morton to appear in the video for their
new single, "Electric Storm." The 25-year-old Morton, who starred as the
main, waterlogged oracle opposite Tom Cruise and
Colin Farrell in "Minority Report," will pose in a series of "sexy and
seductive scenes" in the video, according to the Sunday
World. We think this is fine, as long as they cast Colin as well. Or at
least, get Larry Mullen Jr. to show a little skin . . .

The Mirror: Men Prefer Blond (8-22-2002)
From The Mirror:

Men Prefer Blond
Celebrity Men Are Just Dyeing to Change Their Locks

By Paul Martin, Ireland's No1 Showbiz Writer

Women have been saying it for years, now top male celebrities are
proving that blonds really do have more fun.

Stars like David Beckham, Eminem and Eddie Irvine have bleached their
hair in an effort to stay at the top of the
showbiz world.

Now even movie legend Al Pacino is going blond for his latest film,
Simone. The 62-year-old star shocked fans
when he turned up at the premier of Simone in Hollywood with the
dramatic new hairstyle and his teenage
daughter Julie Marie on his arm.

The look is popular with stars throughout the entertainment industry who
battle it out to fill the pages of glossy
magazines.

Irish stars are getting in on the act with Westlife's Nicky Byrne and
Kian Egan changing to blond since becoming
famous.

U2's Adam Clayton, soccer ace Diego Maradona and actor Kenneth Branagh
have also recently joined the blond
brigade.

Kian Egan, 22, explained: "I took the decision because I was bored with
my hair.

"My hairdresser said it would make a nice change so I just went with it.
I have been blond ever since.

F1 driver Eddie Irvine added: "I never thought I would go blond but it's
a really fun thing to do.

"In the past it was just women who were allowed to dye their hair but
now the men can grab a piece of the action too."

Westlife's Nicky Byrne, 23, went blond after the band's image
consultants wanted to make the band more sexy.

He said: "They told me to do it so I just went along with it and it
turned out well.

"In one of our last videos I shaved all my hair off in front of the
cameras but it's grown back to its normal length now.

"I just went in a few weeks ago and got it done again - I'm definitely
sticking with the blond for a while.

"My girlfriend loves it blond so as long as she does I'm going to keep it."

Independent: Great Britons? (8-22-2002)
From The Independent:

GREAT BRITONS? PUBLIC PREFER POP, ROYALS AND, ER, FRANK SPENCER

By David Lister, Media And Culture Editor

MICHAEL CRAWFORD, star of the Seventies sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em,
has contributed more to British life than Wordsworth, Constable
or Turner. Discuss.

If nothing else, a poll to decide the greatest people from the British
Isles has offered a disturbing insight into how the nation defines
greatness.

More than 30,000 people responded to the BBC poll, and the top 100 were
revealed yesterday. The top 10 will be disclosed on BBC2 this autumn,
with programmes on each of them and a new viewers' vote to decide the
greatest. But sociologists can already have a field day by studying the top
100. Even Jane Root, controller of BBC2, found some of the results odd.
"My channel still screens Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and Michael
Crawford is a wonderful actor, but I'm surprised that a number of people
see him as the greatest Briton of all time," she said.

She may also wonder by what criteria they see him as a more notable
actor than Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud or Alec Guinness, who are not in
the list.

And, while the rules were lax enough to include Irish people, it is odd
that Bono of U2 is in the top 100 but not Oscar Wilde.

There may have been internet campaigning by fans, or perhaps views of
greatness have undergone a massive shift.

Many on the list are from the world of popular music, including Julie
Andrews, Boy George, Cliff Richard and Robbie Williams. There are three
Beatles - John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison - but not a
single Rolling Stone.

David Attenborough is the only television presenter and Richard Burton,
Andrews and Crawford the only actors. The comedians Peter Sellers and
Spike Milligan have been snubbed in favour of Eric Morecambe and Charlie
Chaplin.

Literary and artistic rejects include the poets Wordsworth, Keats,
Shelley, Byron and Ted Hughes, the sculptor Henry Moore and the painters
Turner
and Constable - but the writers J K Rowling and Chaucer have been given
a place.

David Beckham - who led England's unsuccessful team in this year's World
Cup - features, as doest the victorious 1966 captain, Bobby Moore. Only
22 on the list are still alive and only two of those are sports stars -
Beckham and the Olympic oarsman Steve Redgrave.

Ms Root said the architect Isambard Kingdom Brunel would have been her
choice for the greatest Briton, because he helped to change the face of
the country. Brunel is believed to be in the top 10, as is Churchill,
already reported as being at the top, with Shakespeare, Nelson and Queen
Elizabeth the First.

The BBC said yesterday that some of the speculation had been wrong.

Politicians are in short supply, though Tony Blair has managed enough
votes. The right-winger Enoch Powell, whose 1960s "rivers of blood" speech
polarised opinions, is in, but the former Labour prime minister Harold
Wilson is not.

Diana, Princess of Wales, is included, but there is no place for her
former husband, the Prince of Wales. Royals who do win entry include the
Queen
and the Queen Mother.

Aleister Crowley, once seen as the most evil man alive, has been chosen.

An exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery will accompany the series
in the autumn.

The Mirror: Bono is the nicest celebrity, says Keane (8-22-2002)
From The Mirror:

JUST A MINUTE: LORRAINE KEANE

TV3 entertainment correspondent LORRAINE KEANE spends her days meeting
the stars. Fiona Wynne spoke to her about having one of TV's
most glamorous and sought-after jobs.

Are you in your ideal job? I've been very fortunate to change my job
every three or four years. I went from college to AA Roadwatch to managing
the department there to working for RTE and then to TV3. I think it is
good to keep redeveloping yourself and moving keeps the adrenaline
pumping.

Do you ever get star-struck?

I don't really get nervous any more, but I am always aware that I have
to be careful not to make a mess of it. A lot of my stories are pre-recorded
interviews but at the same time you only get one chance. I interviewed
Paul Newman recently about his Barrettstown charity and I was nervous
doing that because he is a man I have admired for a long time.

Who is the nicest celebrity you have interviewed?

I would have to say Bono. He is such an incredible person and so down to
earth - there is so much more to him that just fantastic music. It's
wonderful to see such an international star who is genuinely not
precious or full of self -importance. He honestly listens to what people
have to
say.

Have you ever had any really difficult interviewers?

Not really. It could be that I am so fantastic at my job that I make
people feel at ease, but more than likely they see the camera in front
of them and
know they can't be rude. A couple of times I have had to say I am here
to plug whatever it is you are doing and we can get on with it or I can go
somewhere else, which scares them into being nice.

You recently climbed the five highest mountains in Ireland and Britain,
what made you do that?

I feel so fortunate in my job that I just wanted to do something really
difficult and make a true sacrifice for a good cause. The challenge earned
EUR70,000 for the Chernobyl Children's Project, the Alzheimer's
Association and the Special Olympics.

Are a sporty person?

No way. Ian McKeever asked me would somebody in TV3 do the climb and I
said I would like to give it a try and he was in shock. He said: 'Lorraine,
you wouldn't do any of the easy things like breaking counting records,
you pick the hardest challenge. If you are setting yourself a challenge it
may as well be a tough one'.

Do you worry about what people think of you?

I would never want people to think all I am is a socialite or somebody
who is in it for the fame. I think people perceive me as different to
how I am -
I just hope they think there is more to me than being a TV person-ality.

What's the best and worst things about your job?

The best is easy - I get paid to talk and that is no problem to me. My
job is different every day and I get to talk to some interesting people.
The worst
is working to a strict deadline. I have to go on air at 5.30pm and that
means interviews, editing, scripting and voice-overs have to be done. It
means
I have to run around like mad most of the time.

The Mirror: White...Wrong (8-22-2002)
From The Mirror:

VOICE OF THE DAILY MIRROR

White...Wrong

Most lists throw up some quirky entries but the BBC "100 Greatest
Britons" is crazier than most.

It probably surprises Boy George, Bono, Sir Cliff Richard, Robbie
Williams and Michael Crawford to
discover they are on it.

But the real scandal is that the list does not contain the name of a
single black or Asian Briton.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Express: Sir Bob Listed as Top Brit (8-22-2002)
From The Express:

Sir Bob Listed as Top Brit

Two Irishmen have made it into the BBC's Top 100 Britons list despite
being from Dublin.

Although people from the British Isles were allowed to be included in
the Top 100 list, the poll organisers mistakenly let in Bono and
Sir Bob Geldof. Dubliners Sir Bob and Bono were named alongside Queen
Victoria, Princess Diana and Winston Churchill in a poll
spanning the centuries.

The top 10 will be disclosed over the coming weeks on a show called
Great Britons, in which supporters try to convince viewers of the
historical worth of their favourites. The list was revealed yesterday by
the BBC.

David Attenborough is the only TV presenter to make the grade and
Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Michael Crawford the only actors.

Sir John Gielgud, Lord Laurence Olivier and Sir Alec Guinness go
unmentioned.

Comedy greats Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and other Goons are snubbed.
But Eric Morecambe and Charlie Chaplin get a mention.

Three of The Beatles make it, (Ringo Starr does not), along with John
Lydon, who as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols sang God Save
The Queen. More than 30,000 people took part in the poll.

In the past, U2 have said that The Ramones were a big influence when
they were beginning their musical careers. Last year
Bono paid tribute to band front man Joey Ramone when he died of cancer.

The track list for the album will include hits such as I Wanna be
sedated and Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio.

It will be titled We're a Happy Family.

The Guardian: The 100 greatest Britons (8-22-2002)
Condensed from The Guardian:

The 100 greatest Britons: lots of pop, not so much circumstance
Churchill tops a list that includes, er, John Lydon

Matt Wells, media correspondent
Thursday August 22, 2002

Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have
greatness thrust upon them - but that was in the days before
telephone polls. Otherwise, Boy George and Cliff Richard would
probably not have made it into the BBC's list of top 100 Britons
yesterday.

Royals, pop stars and military figures feature highly in the list,
but poets, artists and women are woefully under-represented.
While the BBC is being coy about the order in which the 100
appear, preferring to keep the revelation for a BBC2 programme
in the autumn, it is understood that Churchill topped the poll,
followed by Shakespeare and Nelson.

The BBC's definition of a Great Briton is "anyone who was born
in the British Isles, including Ireland, or who has lived in the
British Isles, including Ireland, and has played a significant part
in the life of the British Isles". This loose interpretation enabled
the inclusion of the U2 singer Bono, and Bob Geldof, although it
did not help Germaine Greer, who is omitted.

Houston Press: Review of Jimmy Fallon comedy CD (8-22-2002)
Condensed from Houston Press:

[Jimmy Fallon's CD] The Bathroom Wall is by no means a classic comedy
album, in that the stand-up
material--performed in front of an adoring college-campus crowd that
cheers every other syllable--
doesn't withstand repeated listenings. Most of the gags are geared
toward underclassmen: They're
jokes about dorm-room refrigerators (which are, you know, too small to
hold anything but the ice-cube
trays), a resident assistant who sounds like Chris Rock, the walk of
shame back to the dorm after a
night spent in someone else's room, fake ID cards. It's cute, but hardly
so cutting it leaves a lasting
mark; more like a surface wound, if that. And two of the eight comedy
tracks are about troll dolls, with
which Fallon's obsessed; more than anything, they offer him a chance to
impersonate the likes of
Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, U2's Bono and...Cliff from Cheers, which
immediately makes this disc feel
about 10 years old.

The Scotsman: Who's who in greatest Britons poll (8-22-2002)
Condensed from The Scotsman:

Who's who in greatest Britons poll
By Sam Halstead

Scots JK Rowling and Robert the Bruce were named as two of the 100 greatest
Britons of all time today - in a poll which also also honours Robbie
Williams
while missing out poet William Wordsworth. Other Scots listed in the
national
survey include penicillin pioneer Alexander Fleming, TV inventor John Logie
Baird, African explorer David Livingston and Alexander Graham Bell, the
inventor
of the telephone.

Organisers of the poll allowed people from the British Isles, and hence
Irish star
Bono - real name Paul Hewson - from U2 is listed.

Ramones tribute details set

The long-delayed all-star Ramones' tribute album is set to hit the
streets this fall.

MTV.com reports the forthcoming album, entitled "We're a Happy Family,"
is currently
being targeted for stores on November 5.

U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Waits, and KISS are among those who have
contributed
songs to the project.

Rob Zombie, who covers "Blitzkreig Bop" on the tribute disc and who is
co-producing the album
alongside guitarist Joey Ramone, says the time and effort put into it
was well worth it.

"You start a project, and everyone is like, 'Well, who else is on it?',"
Zombie told MTV.com.
"'Well, no one yet.' So everyone waits to see what everyone else is
doing. As we started
confirming people like Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2, everyone was like,
'Now I want to do
it!'"

In addition, diehard Ramones' fan and horror author Stephen King will be
writing the liner

Billboard: Yorn, Pretenders Join Ramones Tribute (8-22-2002)
Condensed from Billboard:

Yorn, Pretenders Join Ramones Tribute

"We're a Happy Family -- A Tribute to the Ramones," the
long-incubating Ramones tribute album spearheaded by Rob
Zombie, now has a definitive track list and a tentative Nov. 5 release
date from DV8/Columbia, according to a post on Zombie's official
Web site. The new track list features contributions from Pete Yorn,
the Pretenders, and unsigned act Rooney in place of previously
tipped possible covers by Static X and Motorhead.

Metallica, which had recorded four songs for the
compilation and couldn't decide which to turn in, has
apparently decided on "53rd and 3rd," one of the trademark
songs of late bassist Dee Dee Ramone.

The album, which is being co-produced by Zombie and
guitarist Johnny Ramone, also features contributions from
Tom Waits ("The Return of Jackie and Judy"), the
Pretenders ("Something To Believe In"), U2 ("Beat on the
Brat"), Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Havana Affair"), Garbage
("I Just Want To Have Something To Do"), the Offspring ("I
Wanna Be Sedated"), Rancid ("Sheena Is a Punk Rocker"),
Green Day ("Outsider"), and Marilyn Manson ("The KKK
Took My Baby Away").

Irish Examiner: Home reception set for Corr wedding (8-22-2002)
From The Irish Examiner:

Home reception set for Corr wedding
By P J Gibbons, Entertainment Correspondent

Pop goddess Caroline Corr, who is to wed her property developer
fiance Frank Woods on the Spanish island of Majorca today, will return
to Dublin on Saturday with her new husband to host a celebrity
reception for friends and family. The likely venue for the bash is the
exclusive Four Season's hotel in Ballsbridge, a veritable celebrity
magnet for visiting stars.

A source close to the couple said explained last night that the pair had
planned the Irish party for those who couldn't make it to today's
ceremony at the couple's sun-soaked hideout in Spain.

"They wanted to mark their marriage here in Ireland as well, so they
thought it was best to hold a second reception in Dublin."

The couple, who opted for a modest ceremony in Spain to avoid the
glare of the media spotlight, have planned to hold off on their
honeymoon until after the weekend.

In a bid to avoid paparazzi and the prying eyes of fans, the pair
checked out of their luxury Spanish hideout yesterday afternoon - the
five-star La Residentia hotel where they had been staying for the last
week.

Scuppering snappers, Caroline and Woods were transported, under
heavy security, to a less high-profile hotel just a few miles away,
where they are to hold an intimate reception after today's wedding.

The source confided that the celebrity couple were determined not to
get involved in the usual Hello-style sell-out on their big day.

"They had decided on a small, intimate wedding and didn't want the
kind of attention that Sharon (Corr) and Gavin got when they married
here in Ireland. Their plan was to have a small, private ceremony and
reception in Spain and then have another, bigger reception in Dublin
when they got back."

Woods, whose brother, also a property developer, works in Majorca,
was joined by family and just a few close friends who flew out for the
today's wedding, while his famous bride-to-be was to be whisked to
the church in the company of her father Gerry and celebrity siblings
Andrea, Sharon and Jim.

Having recently broken up with his 22-year-old girlfriend, Jim will be the
only Corr to attend today's event without a partner on his arm.

The guitarist player instead chose to invite his best friend, DJ Tony
Fenton. It was also expected that the U2 frontman Bono, a close
friend of the Corrs, would also attend the wedding.

YouTwo.net: U2achtung.com reports from the set of U2's new video (8-22-2002)
U2achtung.com reports that Bono and Larry met with fans on the beach of
Eze during a break of the filming of U2's new video
Wednesday afternoon. Having completed several scenes during the
afternoon, Larry indicated to the fans that the "real" filming
would begin later that evening.

Around 9 p.m., a fireworks show was seen in the sky over Bono's home to
honor Bono and Ali's twentieth wedding anniversary.
There were a large number of security guards surrounding the home,
preventing fans from seeing too much of the video shoot.
Part of the set was visible from a distance; the other was protected by
a wall surrounding the home.

U2achtung.com staff could hear the song being played for the filming.
They describe it as a "magnificent song that begins slowly
and ends with a roar." It was played repeatedly.

During the shooting, fans could see Paul McGuiness, Ali, Morleigh, Ann,
Jordan, and Eve watching the filming of the video. Paul
McGuinness approached the fans and asked that no one take photos of the
filming.

The video shoot went on through the night, with the band taking only a
few breaks of no longer than 5 minutes.

Around 1 a.m., a small number of fans were allowed to move closer to
the set, where they could actually see the band. Bono wore
a black leather jacket and sunglasses. The Edge wore a white cowboy hat,
t-shirt, and jeans. Adam and Larry were dressed "as
usual." Bono was visibly exhausted, but took the time to acknowledge
the fans with a wave. When the band wrapped up the
video shoot, Adam came over and spoke to the fans briefly.

NME: Tom Waits, Pete Yorn join Ramones tribute album line-up (8-21-2002)
From NME:

Tom Waits, Pete Yorn join Ramones tribute album line-up
They're A Happy Family!

KISS, PETE YORN and TOM WAITS are the final additions to the line-up on
'WE'RE A HAPPY FAMILY', the forthcoming RAMONES
tribute album, joining a glittering array including U2, METALLICA, EDDIE
VEDDER, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS and MARILYN
MANSON.

After months of work, the album is now in its final stages. The man
responsible for the project, Rob Zombie, says it is being mastered.
On a posting on his website robzombie.com, he has set a provisional
release date of November 5 for the US. No date has been finalised
for the UK. "The project just snowballed," Zombie said. "You start a
project, and everyone is like, 'Well, who else is on it?' 'Well, no one
yet.' So everyone waits to see what everyone else is doing. As we
started confirming people like Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2,
everyone was like, 'Now I want to do it!'"

Kiss cover 'Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?', while Pete Yorn works
through 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend' and Tom Waits
covers 'Return of Jackie and Judy'.

After months of procrastination, Metallica have finally settled on a

tracks, including 'Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue', but settled on the song
penned by Dee Dee Ramone as tribute to the late bassist, who
died in June.

will write the liner notes for the album.

PA: BBC Reveals 100 Great Britons (8-21-2002)
From The Press Association:

BBC Reveals 100 Great Britons
By Anthony Barnes, Showbusiness Editor, PA News

Soccer idol David Beckham, veteran radio DJ John Peel and singer Robbie
Williams made it - but Constable and Wordsworth have failed to
make the grade in a search for the all-time greatest Briton today.

Royals, scientists and soldiers dominate the list of 100 compiled in a
national poll, while most of those still living are from the world of music.

The top 10 will be disclosed over the coming weeks as enthusiastic
supporters will try to convince us of their worth in a series of programmes
on BBC2.

The list was unveiled today to launch the station's autumn season and
gives a fascinating insight into what people value in their greats. The
right-wing politician Enoch Powell whose famous "rivers of blood" speech
polarised opinions makes it, but Labour Prime Minister Harold
Wilson is not on the list.

Diana, Princess of Wales, whose death touched the world, is in the 100,
but she is not accompanied by her former husband the Prince of Wales.

David Attenborough is the only TV presenter and Richard Burton, Julie
Andrews and Michael Crawford the only actors. Legends of the stage
and screen John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier and Alec Guinness go unmentioned.

While Britons are renowned for their sense of humour, Peter Sellers,
Spike Milligan and the other Goons have been snubbed. Eric Morecambe
and Charlie Chaplin are the only comedy greats.

Three of The Beatles make it into the top 100, but Ringo Starr failed to
drum up enough support. Aleister Crowley, once seen as the most evil
man alive and a figure featured on the band's Sgt Pepper sleeve, has
somehow been chosen.

John Lydon makes it on to the list of national treasures, alongside the
royals that he mocked when as Johnny Rotten, frontman for the Sex Pistols,
he sang God Save The Queen.

A fifth of the 100 are from the world of science, engineering and
invention, such as William Caxton, responsible for the printing press to
Barnes
Wallace, who invented the bouncing bomb.

Yet there is a major absence of visual artists. No Constable, Turner or
Moore. Poetry is also overlooked, yet Harry Potter creator JK Rowling and
Chaucer are there as champions of the written word.

Royal entries include the Queen and the Queen Mother. They make up 14 of
the names if Boudicca and Robert the Bruce are included.

Military heroes and leaders are popular with Winston Churchill, the Duke
of Wellington, Horatio Nelson, Owain Glyndwr, Lawrence of Arabia and
Field Marshall Montgomery listed. Poignantly the Unknown Soldier is
there too.

Only 22 are still alive and only two of those are sports stars - Beckham
and five-time Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave.

Organisers of the poll allowed people from the British Isles, and hence
Irish star Bono - real name Paul Hewson - from U2 is listed.

The top 10 will be announced by Anne Robinson this autumn in BBC2's
Great Britons, series in which viewers will again have a chance to vote
after seeing films about the short-listed few fronted by figures such as
Jeremy Clarkson, Rosie Boycott and Andrew Marr.

Over 30,000 people responded to the poll, conducted last year. The top
100, revealed today in alphabetical order, shows the British public has
very exacting standards: scientists, soldiers and royals are the most
likely to be considered "great".

BBC2 controller Jane Root, said: "I think there are a few surprises in
the Top 100 and it will be fascinating to see who has made it into the
Top 10.

"I'm sure this series will arouse enthusiastic debate in offices and
homes all around the country. Just from talking to people I've got a
real sense of
how passionately they feel about the subject and who they feel is worthy
of the title of Great Briton.

An exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery will accompany the series.

Complete list of the top 100 in alphabetical order:

Alfred the Great. Andrews, Julie. (King) Arthur. Attenborough, David.
Austen, Jane.

Babbage, Charles. (Lord) Baden Powell. Bader, Douglas. Beckham, David.
Bell, Alexander Graham. Benn, Tony. Berners Lee, Tim. Bevan, Aneurin.
Blair, Tony. Blake, William. Booth, William. Boudicca. Bowie, David.

YouTwo.net: U2France.com reports on video shoot in Eze (8-21-2002)
U2France.com has a report from a French fan who witnessed the filming of
U2's new video today
in the South of France. The filming took place on the beach of Eze
facing Bono's home with a
small team of 10 people.

The fan witnessed a scene in which Larry is dressed completely in black
and standing next to a
bathtub full of water with a mermaid in it. Another scene had Larry
sitting next to the mermaid on
a garden swing.

The fan reported hearing some of the song (presumably "Electrical
Storm") and commented that
it was "rather slow" in tempo.

Bono, also dressed completely in black and wearing dark sunglasses,
wandered around the set.

London Evening Standard: Pop Stars and Monarchs Take Early Lead as UK
Gets to Vote on its Heroes (8-21-2002)
From The London Evening Standard:

Pop Stars and Monarchs Take Early Lead as UK Gets to Vote on its Heroes
BY JESSICA HODGSON, MEDIA CORRESPONDENT

Being a monarch, pop star or war hero is more likely to win the
affection of the British public than being Prime Minister, creating great
art or strutting the stage.

Boy George, John Lennon, the Queen and Winston Churchill hold a special
place in the hearts and minds of the British public, according
to a poll for BBC2. But there's no room for artists Turner and
Constable, poets Keats, and Byron, or Laurence Olivier. The top 100 will be
revealed in Great Britons, a new series on BBC2 - with the viewers
ultimately voting on the greatest Briton of them all.

The survey, which had 30,000 respondents, found being a monarch can make
you popular. Fourteen of the entries are royals, including
the Queen, Queen Mother and Princess Diana. Also present are Alfred the
Great, Robert the Bruce, and Elizabeth I. Being semi-mythical
isn't a problem - King Arthur gets in.

Fourteen musical stars make the top 100, and votes from the Baby Boomer
generation ensure they are largely from the world of pop. Robbie
Williams, John Lennon, Boy George, David Bowie, Bono and Cliff Richard
are in, with Edward Elgar the sole representative of classical
music. BBC DJ John Peel will be pleasantly surprised to be included.

The list has a warlike tinge: as well as schoolbook heroes such as
Nelson and Wellington, fractious rebels Boudicca, William Wallace and
Owain Glyndwr make it.

Despite today's cult of celebrity, only 22 of the list are alive today.
David Beckham is there, as one of two living sportsmen - Steve Redgrave
is the other - but wife Victoria and her former Spice Girl colleagues
aren't.

TV stars are thin on the ground. From today's TV only David Attenborough
gets in. Politicians are scarce too, apart from Margaret Thatcher
and Tony Blair, father of the NHS Aneurin Bevan, David Lloyd George,
Tony Benn, and Enoch Powell.

Inventors and scientists fare well: the poll features inventor of the
printing press William Caxton, Tim Berners Lee, who developed the World
Wide Web, and Stephen Hawking.

Mystical painter and poet William Blake is the only artist to make it,
Richard Burton and Julie Andrews some of the few actors.

Michael Crawford and Eric Morecambe give clues to the British sense of
humour, and there's evidence we like to root for the villain: Guy
Fawkes, Richard III and satanist Aleister Crowley all have a chance.

Great Britons starts in October with a presentation of all 100
candidates. Anne Robinson will reveal the top 10 and, in a series of weekly
one-hour films, presenters such as Jeremy Clarkson, Rosie Boycott and
Andrew Marr will make the case for their chosen Great Briton. Viewers
will be able to vote throughout the series and the Greatest Briton will
be announced in a live programme.

The Mirror: Corr, What A Wedding (8-21-2002)
From The Mirror:

3AM
By Jessica Callan, Eva Simpson, Suzanne Kerins

CORR, WHAT A WEDDING

Caroline Corr will marry her long-term boyfriend in Spain this week, 3am
can reveal exclusively.

The Corrs' drummer will tie the knot with Frank Woods at beautiful Deya
in Majorca. The couple have been planning their big day
since arriving in the village last week.

They will exchange vows at a tiny village church on a mountain top then
hold a pounds 250,000 reception at the five-star La
Residencia Hotel, which was owned until recently by Virgin boss Richard
Branson.

Our source said: "The wedding is either on Thursday or Friday but
Caroline won't give anything away. Guests including Bono and
The Edge are expected to arrive today."

An entire floor has been booked at the hotel where rooms cost pounds 500
a night and the honeymoon suite is decked out in white
lilies and muslin.

Caroline's father Gerry will give her away with sisters and bandmates
Andrea and Sharon as bridesmaids. Brother Jim will also be
there. Extra security staff have already been drafted in to guard the
hotel in case fans or press try to gatecrash the wedding.

Caroline got engaged to Woods in April after a turbulent five-year
relationship.

Frank, a Dublin property developer, met the percussionist in a nightclub.

Their relationship appeared strained when she quit his luxury Dublin pad
shortly before sister Sharon's wedding in July last year.

But they rekindled their romance and she moved back in with him earlier
this year.

Since then he has jetted worldwide to watch her on tour. "They are
closer than ever now," said a pal.

"They got to the stage where they wanted to make it official and tie the
knot. They are deeply in love."

The Express: Wedded to His Work (8-21-2002)
From The Express:

Wedded to His Work

U2 singer Bono will be busy shooting the video for the group's new
single, Electric Storm today, but is unlikely to light
up his wife Ali's life as it is their 20th wedding anniversary.

The group began shooting the video in Villefranche in the South of
France yesterday. The shoot, which involves a crew
of 60, is located near Bono and the Edge's villas in Eze-Sur-Mer, where
they and their families have been spending the
summer.

The Mirror: Bono & Edge expected to attend Corr wedding (8-21-2002)
From The Mirror:

EL OF A BRIDE
MIRROR REVEALS SECRET SPANISH VILLAGE WHERE CAROLINE CORR WILL WED

By Paul Martin

This is the romantic hideaway where Corrs beauty Caroline will get
married, the Daily Mirror can reveal.

The millionaire drummer and her fiance Frank Woods will tie the knot in
the breathtaking village of Deia in Majorca.

The couple are preparing for their fairytale wedding at the five-star La
Residentia Hotel owned by Virgin boss Richard Branson. They
will exchange vows at a tiny hillside church - and then hold an
extravagant pounds 250,000 reception back at the hotel.

Andrea and Sharon will be bridesmaids as father Gerry gives Caroline
away. Her brother Jim will also be attending.

Andrea arrived with boyfriend Giles Baxendale on Monday and it's
believed chart-topping band will perform a special song at the
reception.

An insider revealed yesterday: "This is about as romantic as you can
get. Caroline wants everything to be perfect on the day.

"The wedding is either on Thursday or Friday. It's definitely going
ahead although Caroline won't give anything away.

"Guests will be arriving tomorrow morning and there will be a huge
reception at the hotel after the ceremony."

Stars such as Bono and The Edge from U2 and DJ Tony Fenton are believed
to be heading for the event.

An entire floor of the /750-a-night hotel has been booked out and the
honeymoon suite has been decked out with white lilies and muslin.

Extra security staff have been drafted in to guard the hotel in case
fans or press try to gatecrash.

And there will be patrols around the church during the ceremony even
though its remote location makes it difficult to reach.

The Residentia Hotel is popular with stars from the world of showbiz.
Recent guests have included Rod Stewart, Antonio Banderas and
Melanie Griffiths.

Deia is one of the most picturesque locations in Europe and is popular
with wealthy holidaymakers.

The old church where they will make their vows is surrounded by pine
woods, olive trees, terraced hillsides and steep cobbled streets and
a winding track leads down to the sea.

The source added: "The church is going to be decorated with white roses
and lilies.

"They have picked special hymns and there will even be an orchestra
performing."

The couple got engaged in April after a turbulent five-year relationship.

Woods, a high profile property developer in Dublin, struck up the
relationship after meeting the Corrs drummer in a nightclub.

But their love seemed to be on the rocks when the brunette moved out of
Frank's luxury pad in Dublin shortly before the wedding of sister
Sharon in July 2001.

But they rekindled their romance and she moved back in with him earlier
this year.

Since then, he has jetted all over the world to watch her on tour. A pal
said: "They are closer than every now."

Caroline will be the second Corr to tie the knot. Violinist Sharon
married her long-term partner Gavin Bonnar, 33, in Cratloe, Co Clare.

Independent: Debt-laden Vivendi may spin off film and music division
(8-21-2002)
From The Independent:

Debt-laden Vivendi may spin off film and music division
By Nigel Cope

21 August 2002

Vivendi Universal, the French media group, is considering
spinning off its entertainment businesses into a separately quoted
company as part of a complex restructuring.

The move being considered includes merging some of the cable
assets of US group Liberty Media with Universal's film and music
interests as part of a possible public offering.

Such a deal could see Vivendi's stake in the enlarged
entertainment business fall to as low as 51 per cent. The company
would most likely be run by Barry Diller, chairman of Vivendi
Universal's film and television entertainment division.

The separation of the entertainment businesses from the Vivendi
conglomerate would prove popular within the division itself, which
has been weighed down by being part of such a large diverse
group. It would leave a focused entertainment group including
Universal Music, home to artists such as Shaggy, Eminem and U2
as well as Universal Pictures, the film studio responsible for
movies such as Gosford Park and A Beautiful Mind.

"Vivendi has said it will not sell the Universal assets outright, but it
is looking at spinning them off," one source close to the company
said. "Liberty Media has been discussing a number of options with
Vivendi, one being merging some cable assets into the
entertainment arm."

Liberty Media, controlled by John Malone, is already a key
shareholder in Vivendi Universal, with a stake of close to 4 per
cent. He is also a long-time ally of Barry Diller.

One possibility is for Liberty to merge its Starz and Encore cable
networks and its interest in the Discovery Channel's parent with
Vivendi's US entertainment business as part of a spin-off.

Vivendi's newly appointed chief executive, Jean Rene Fourtou, is
drawing plans to sell assets to cut crushing debts and help
resolve a cash crisis left by his acquisition-hungry predecessor
Jean-Marie Messier.

Mr Fourtou has earmarked Vivendi's publishing business
Houghton Mifflin and the international assets of Canal Plus for
sale. But he said on Monday that he would not sell the core
Universal, Canal Plus and non-US publishing assets, or stakes in
French telecoms group Cegetel and Vivendi Environnement.

In a separate development yesterday, Vivendi Environnement
bondholders agreed to further disentangle the utility business from
its former majority shareholder Vivendi Universal.

In a vote in Paris they agreed to release the utility from its
obligation to buy out bondholders if Vivendi Universal defaulted on
its own borrowings.

VH1: Rob Zombie Finalizes Ramones Tribute With Last-Minute Adds (8-21-2002)
From VH1:

Rob Zombie Finalizes Ramones Tribute With Last-Minute Adds
Pete Yorn, Tom Waits sneak contributions in under wire.

By Joe D'Angelo

Fans growing impatient for the release of the Ramones tribute album
We're a Happy Family now have
a good reason to turn that frown upside down.

The track list for the LP, which is currently being mastered, and a
tentative street date of November 5
were announced via a posting on the Web site of Rob Zombie, who is
serving as co-producer along with
guitarist Johnny Ramone.

Although Zombie himself vouched for the accuracy of the most specific
details concerning the album since
he first announced plans for it in November, a spokesperson for Columbia
Records, the label which intends
to release the LP, couldn't confirm them at press time.

"The project just snowballed," Zombie said on Monday of the
time-consuming effort that went into
assembling the album. "You start a project, and everyone is like, 'Well,
who else is on it?' 'Well, no one
yet.' So everyone waits to see what everyone else is doing. As we
started confirming people like Red Hot
Chili Peppers and U2, everyone was like, 'Now I want to do it!'"

Besides previously reported tracks from Green Day, Marilyn Manson, U2
and Eddie Vedder, who
collaborated with Seattle thrashers Zeke for his contributions, the
track list reveals new additions such
as the Pretenders' "Something to Believe In"; the last entry, Pete
Yorn's "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend";
Tom Waits' "Return of Jackie and Judy"; Kiss' "Do You Remember Rock and
Roll Radio?" (a late
addition Zombie said was among his favorite cuts); and "Here Today, Gone
Tomorrow" by newcomers
Rooney. Although the inclusion of a new band yet to drop their debut may
seem odd alongside songs
by such veteran artists, Zombie explained that the bandmembers are
friends with Johnny, who invited
them to the party.

Tragedy helped Metallica -- who couldn't decide which song of a possible
eight being considered (four
of which had been recorded) they would deliver to Zombie -- finally
settle on one, according to a
Metallica spokesperson. Upon learning of the death of Ramones bassist
Dee Dee in June, they eliminated
the other recorded options, "Commando," "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the
World" and "Now I Wanna Sniff
Some Glue," and went with "53rd & 3rd," Dee Dee's signature song about
his early days spent hustling in
midtown Manhattan. The fate of the other recorded tracks are unknown,
the spokesperson said.

Vedder and Zeke recorded two tracks for the LP, "I Believe in Miracles"
and "Daytime Dilemma," though
the latter will appear only as a bonus track limited to the album's
initial pressing.

Not only does We're a Happy Family sound like a great listen, Zombie
took special care to ensure that
the album's artwork and packaging were comparable to the music, so he
designed it himself with the
intention to make it as elaborate as possible. Zombie described the
finished product to be a gatefold
Digipak containing never-before-published photos of the Ramones from the
early '70s to up until their
very last farewell tour, taken by the band's friend and documentarian
Arturo Vega.

With the artwork completed, all that's left is for horror author and
diehard Ramones fan Stephen King to
write the liner notes.

In other Zombie news, his feature film "House of 1,000 Corpses" may be
back from the dead. After a
deal with MGM fell through because of what Zombie said was an offhanded
dis during an interview with
Ben Affleck for MTV's "Movie House," he said he's very close to signing
a new deal which will give the
film a proper theatrical release "soon."

We're a Happy Family track list, according to Rob Zombie:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Havana Affair"
Rob Zombie - "Blitzkrieg Bop"
Eddie Vedder with Zeke - "I Believe in Miracles"
Metallica - "53rd & 3rd"
U2 - "Beat on the Brat"
Kiss - "Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?"
Marilyn Manson - "The KKK Took My Baby Away"
Garbage - "I Just Want to Have Something to Do"
Green Day - "Outsider"
Pretenders - "Something to Believe In"
Rancid - "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker"
Pete Yorn - "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend"
The Offspring - "I Wanna Be Sedated"
Rooney - "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow"
Tom Waits - "Return of Jackie and Judy"
Eddie Vedder with Zeke - "Daytime Dilemma (Dangers of Love)" (limited
edition bonus track)

Billboard: Daniel Lanois Signs To Anti (8-21-2002)
From Billboard:

Daniel Lanois Signs To Anti

Storied producer/musician/songwriter Daniel Lanois has signed to Epitaph
Records' Anti imprint, home to such noted artists
as Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, and Solomon Burke. Lanois' as-yet-untitled
fourth album and first for the label is due in
January, according to his official Web site.

"Daniel Lanois is one of the most fascinating artists of the rock era,"
Anti president Andy Kaulkin said in a statement.
"His style is both instantly recognizable and completely original. We
are very proud to be working with a true icon
at the peak of his creativity."

The set will be Lanois' first studio release in nearly a decade and is
the follow-up to 1993's "For the Beauty of Wynona"
(Warner Bros.), which hit No. 26 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. The
album is said to be much in the vein
of his past work, although more personal and spiritual in nature.

"My nomadic travels over the years have brought me much life experience,
snapshots of which appear on this record,"
Lanois said of the album. "I've also rediscovered my first love: the
steel guitar. I believe it has rescued me one more
time."

In the last decade, Lanois has found himself mostly in the production
role, working with such artists as U2 on the Irish
quartet's lauded 2001 set "All That You Can't Leave Behind," which won
him a Grammy and a Juno Award. He
has also helmed albums for Bob Dylan ("Time Out of Mind," "Oh Mercy"),
Peter Gabriel ("So," "Us," "Birdy"), and Willie
Nelson ("Teatro"), and performed various instruments on those artist's
releases as well.

Although unnamed, several songs are confirmed for Lanois' new
collection, notably "Sometimes," which the label
describes as "perhaps the thematic cornerstone of the album," and the
stark "Sweet Soul Honey." Also slated for
the set are several instrumentals, including the hymn-like pedal steel
guitar track "JJ Leaves LA." The Los Angeles
Times recently reported that "several of his star clients are expected
to contribute vocals" to the album.

A native of Quebec who was last year inducted into the Canadian Music
Hall of Fame, Lanois is organizing a spring
tour in support of the Anti album. A show at New York's famed Carnegie
Hall is among the planned stops. His most
recent live outing was a two-night performance in June as part of the
Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Reuters: Another Love Suit (8-21-2002)
Condensed from Reuters:

ANOTHER LOVE SUIT

In a separate bitter dispute in Seattle, Love is suing the remaining
members of
Cobain's grunge band Nirvana over ownership of the group's recordings and
songs in the case worth millions of dollars in royalties.

Irish superstar Bono of the group U2 has been asked to testify for Love,
while
the band's former band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic questioned
Courtney's mental stability in court papers filed this year.

Love recently submitted a written settlement proposal, but Nirvana's lawyer,
Kelly Corr, on Tuesday said he told Love's lawyers upon receipt of the
proposal
that he considered it "one-sided and unreasonable."

"Krist and Dave would like to settle this case if possible because
they'd like to
get the music out to fans," he said.

A hearing on a motion to dismiss Love's suit is set for Aug. 30. If
denied, the
case is set to go to trial Sept. 30.

Love's lawyer in that case, O. Yale Lewis, was not immediately available for
comment.
