Quite similar to Type-O this their latest album I must say. I doubt they´ve
got an american distributor, but check out www.mydyingbride.org to see if
they maybe have some mp3 samples. I know for sure there is one (or at least
was) available for download at www.peaceville.com . This album totally kicks
ass!! Best phukin album I´ve bought since Katatonia´s 'Tonight´s Decision'
and Anathema´s 'Judgement'.
It´s similar to Type-O in the sense that MDB use haunting keyboards and
quite deep (not as deep as St Pete though) vocals too. The guitars are more
epic and haunting (they too) than Type-O. MDB also have a slight tendency to
increase the tempo seamingly sometimes (not too often though). Really slow &
really hard album this.
And hey..the tracklength is another thing the two bands have in common; how
about these numbers for instance:
track #1) She is the Dark - 8:27
#2) Edenbeast - 11:26
#6) Into the Lake of Ghosts - 7:11
#9) Sear Me III - 5:27 (=second shortest track of the album)
3 songs over 10 minutes, non of them ever becoming the slightest bit dull at
any point.. Impressive.
If you need me, I´ll be in my corner - enjoying the hell outta this
EXCELLENT album!!
My Dying Bride - 'The Light at the End of the World'. Buy it if you have

My Dying Bride?...Yeah they´re good......And I´ve seen em live!

hmm...if you like this kind of music, I feel it is my duty to reccomend
"Nefilim" ,(former singer from "fields of nephilim") and not to be confused

i lucked out...my excellent cd store here gets copies in of the new MDB all the

goes for the new Opeth, "Still Life"....which beats the SHIT out of the new
MDB.

LGOFS is ok.....but a little dull compared to the early stuff.

that's the only album of theirs that i don't have. i've heard all of it
though....it's VERY different. really only one good song on there that i
liked. it's nothing like their early stuff at all.
i've got an excellent bootleg concert of them live in Poland. they are
outstanding live....
It's on CDNow for import price $23.99 (arrrgh - that's nearly $40 my money
here - I will just wait and hope I find it in the city somewhere for less).
The import company listed seems to be VILE (by name, maybe by nature).
At least Amazon.com have it for $20.49, so hopefully you should find an OK
price in the US stores - haven't looked at any of the other mail order
stuff - those two are pretty much the easiest for me to use. The reviews on
Amazon were all glowing, though.
Some people i扉e spoken to say it愀 their best. Others simply can愒 stand

Personally I haven愒 heard enough to class it as good or bad.
Hehe - I'm glad I'm not the only one to be continually sucked in by their

Opeth - 'Still Life' really rawks yeah, but it´s noway near as good as the

Btw Mr DevilThorn, been able to find any more Diabolical Masquerade albums
over there? I´ve been searching like a madman over *here*, and the only
album missing now is 'The Phantom Lodge'. I was thinking I´d send Blakkheim
a mail someday soon, telling him to send me a copy of it ASAP.. ;)
Let me know if you´re interested in getting your hands on any of the Diab.
Masquerade albums...
>Opeth - 'Still Life' really rawks yeah, but it愀 noway near as good as the

hmmm....the new MDB is good...but i end up getting bored with them after about
half the album. (they tend to drone on in places...sometimes the slowness just
takes away from the song) i NEVER get bored with Opeth. they are much better
musicians, and Mikael's death growls absolutely crush anything Aaron can do. i
am very glad though that Aaron brought back the growls, after the last 2 albums
with them lacking.

nah....i haven't been able to find any here. only have seen Nightwork, which i
already have. and i have a dubbed copy of Phantom Lodge on tape. i could have
my record store here order it if i really want to get it bad. they (well,
actually he) are an excellent band. i prefer this over all of the stuff he has
done with Katatonia, who i cannot get into no matter how hard i try.
have you heard Bloodbath....Blakkheims work with Mikael of Opeth, Dan Swano,
and Jonas from Katatonia? it is outstanding old school death metal. if you
thought Mikaels death voice was great in Opeth, you haven't heard anything yet!
>i prefer this over all of the stuff he has
>done with Katatonia, who i cannot get into no matter how hard i try.
Wow.. Then you´re really missing out on something buddy.. I´ve been a sucker
for Katatonia ever since 'Discouraged Ones' was released. 'Tonight´s
Decision' is an absolute masterpiece. I can´t stop praising it. It´s just
magnificent.
Their earlier black/doom/death-metal stuff is really good too, especially
'Dance of December Souls', which sounds a lot like early Paradise Lost
('Lost Paradise'). But much better.
Can´t wait for their next album to be released.. It´ll be an extraordinarily
fine autumn with new releases from Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Amorphis,
Diabolical Masquerade (HOPEFULLY that is - Dan Swanö will be banging the
drums once again btw) and last but NOT least: Anathema (reportedly). Nice
eh?

Unfortunately I haven´t heard anything from it yet. I´ve been looking for
it, but I´ve come up with nothing so far. I´ll be looking even harder and
further..I promise.

i've heard everything Katatonia has put out....the new stuff makes me
sick..it's just very boring to me. i like a little bit of the older
stuff...but it didn't stand out enough to make me want to buy it. i've got a
few songs taped, that's enough for me.
>with new releases from Paradise Lost

i am hoping it will be a little more like Elegy than Tuonela. even better
would be if it was like the awesome Tales from 1000 Lakes!

UGH!!!....a band i dislike even more than Katatonia. i have always thought
they were very overrated, and really just average at best.

Bloodbath is excellent. only 3 songs on the cd....but still well worth it. my
cd store always has copies in stock. i'm rather surprised you cannot find it
over there.

2 EXCELLENT gothenburg bands. the In Flames is due out at the end of July over
here in the US....cannot wait for that. i just found out that they may be over
here doing a show on the day before my b-day!! that is going to be
awesome...first time seeing them live.
the new Dark Tranquillity album is going to be a welcome change....back to a
lot more of the heavier music and death vox, after "Projector". Projector was
good...but the clean vox got on my nerves after a while....VERY nasal singing.
how come all the good bands are from Sweden or Norway, and some from Finland!!
must be something in the water over there!! haha.

excellent....let me know if you find it...and also be thinking about what you
are looking for....i know i can find the Bloodbath for you...but it's only a 3

I think it's got it's points but obviously they were trying to hit the big
time or something....stick with what they are good at

au contraire my friend....Opeth is MUCH more than "cookie monster"
music....there are tons of clean vox thrown in....very good ones, i might
add....and the music is outstanding. it is not death metal as you are fearing.
yes...Mikael does use a death voice in many songs....but the balance is quite
good between clean and death. give it a listen....you might be surprised. the
new album "Still Life" is incredible. if you want to hear the lighter side of
them from that album...download samples of the song "Benighted", or "Face of
Melinda".
>>Damn. Never mind. Cookie Monster music sucks...
>download samples of the song "Benighted", or "Face of Melinda".
..or go download the best song of the whole album, 'Godhead愀 Lament', at
www.metal-rules.com . Don愒 let the Cookie Monster vocals scare ya CB..
Can愒 be as narrowminded as that.. Not all growling is good, I admit that,
but as DT says..Mikael has an incredible voice..both his normal one and his
Cookie Monster version of it..

ugh....i had this cd some time ago....horrible. traded it away immediately.
their earlier work is MUCH better. they totally wimped out on this cd. it did
have one good song (not the first one though...), but that wasn't enough to
justify keeping it. check out their earlier work though...if you want more
"rocking" music than what is on Forever Autumn. bad news on this band though:
they recently broke up.

Honestly..I fuckin hate those kinda bands.. Powermetal bites my hairy ass.
Saw Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody & Stratovarius live some time ago..I still have
nightmares.. I惴 damaged for life.. Those highpitched C愀.. Ouch.. I惴
partially deaf too now thanks to those..
But if you愉e really into that sorta music, check out Rhapsody & Luca
Turelli.. He愀 some sort of powermetal god or smthing.. But I take it you
already knew of those..aswell as Rage..
If I had to spend a day listening to powermetal, I悲 be listening to
Stratovarius.. I recommend those..

Speaking of IF, DT and finnish bands.. IF, DT, To/Die/For & Sentenced will
be tourning most of Europe this fall. All together. Since both IF & DT are
spawn outta Gothenburg, I figure they´ll do ATLEAST one show here. Oh yeah
baby!! It´ll be the best show I ever saw..

>you guys like melodic power metal like sonata arctica or simillar

sorry....i normally run as fast as possible away from power metal generally. i
only like about 5% of it.
while not entirely "melodic"....the best power metal band (at least that's what
the majority of people i know would categorize them as) is Lefay from Sweden.
(they were formally known as Morgana Lefay, and put out 4 albums and a few
greatest hits cds before being forced into changing the bands name.).....i
HIGHLY recommend these guys. they are much heavier than normal power metal ala
(the dreadfully boring) Blind Guardian and stuff like that.
the earlier Morgana Lefay albums (Knowing Just As I, Sanctified, Secret
Doctrine, Maleficium) may be a little hard to find in the US, unless you have a
good cd store. however, they have just been picked up by Noise Records
recently, and their last 2 releases, Seventh Seal....and S.O.S. should be
easily attainable.
also...although not completely power metal....more of a hodge-podge of
power/death/black/speed metal all rolled into one is the band Children of Bodom
from Finland. EXCELLENT musicianship....these guys are unbelieveable. vox are
a bit on the raspy black/death side mostly....but this band is great. get
their newest one, Hatebreeder if you get the chance.
>two bands i would recommend, tho they are quite different from type o cause
>they have female vocals mixed in witht he male, but ...
>Macbeth, and Theater of tragedy
i've had the 3 Theater of Tragedy albums for quite some time now....good stuff.
i particularly like Aegis. that was a great album.
if you like ToT's brand of male & female singers....you may like Lacuna Coil as
well. they are MUCH better than ToT in my opinion. Lacuna Coil is more rock
oriented though, and not as gothic as ToT.
other interesting male/female vox bands are Tristania, and Sins of Thy
Beloved.....but beware all...the men usually use growling black/death vox a lot
rather than cleaner singing that would appeal to most. of the two, i would
recommend Tristania before SOTB...
i do have some lacuna coil , and tristania, they are both good :) thats what i
like the growling male voices with the nice melodic female singers, sounds good
htat way i think :) there are a few other foreign bands that sound good like
that to, tho right now i cant seem tot hink of their nmes....
> do have some lacuna coil , and tristania, they are both good :) thats what i

nice to see you appreciating great bands like these. not many people i know
like them. :-) the new Lacuna Coil ep is great....i hope they hurry up and
put out another full length album soon. they are one of my fav female led
bands. as for Tristania....i prefer "Widow's Weeds" to "Beyond the Veil",
how about you??
>there are a few other foreign bands that sound good like
>that to, tho right now i cant seem tot hink of their nmes....
as far as other bands with both male and female singers, i'm drawing a blank at
the moment......but for just bands with female singers in hard
rock/metal....try The Gathering, Warlock (great 80's metal), Power Symphony,
Opera IX, Sinergy, Drain STH (who recently broke up, much to my
chagrin...dammit!!)......most of these are not in the same vein as ToT,
Tristania, or Lacuna Coil....but are still worth listening to anyway.
>as far as other bands with both male and female singers, i'm drawing a

Lemme help you out then.. 'Within Temptation'.. Dutch gothicmetal featuring
female co-lead vox, and male cookie monster ditto. Womens voices in metal
really gets to me after a while..but it´s different with WT; I CAN STAND
IT!!
Seriously, I advice you to check this band out Mr DevilThorn. You´d LOVE
them. You really would.
hehe noone i know likes them, but i am tring to convert a few :)~~
> as for Tristania....i prefer "Widow's Weeds" to "Beyond the Veil",

i actually dont own any cd's from them, tho i have a pile of songs from
napster, most came from widows weeds adn i love them :) i should look into
getting some cd's, just too poor right now..
.
>.but for just bands with female singers in hard
>rock/metal....
i do like the gathering, and nightwish, have you heard them? i wasnt really
that impressed with Drain STH, ...i dont knwo why...
a couple other of my faves, tho not necisarrily with male/fem vox are evol,
(they are great) tiamat, therion, sentenced, lame immortelle,...just for a few,
you should give thema try they are much simialar to lucana coil, adn
tristania....
excuse my typing, it is 2 am and i just got home from work, i need sleep :)
Now this is one of my favourite bands in that genre, that girl has the voice
of a goddess...especially the song "Candles" gives me the shivers...as for

impressed...

Your assumptions are wrong, dear trikztar. 'Enter' is no where to be found
in this ole' country of mine..
I got 'Gatekeeper' on some Gothic/Blackmetal compilation called "Twilight of
the Gods vol. II", been looking for 'Enter' ever since.. But all i´ve come

>a couple other of my faves, tho not necisarrily with male/fem vox are

have never really liked them all that much...especially now that they are off
on a Pink Floyd-ish tangent.....i cannot stand PF...and Tiamat lost my interest
after they chose to forsake their heavier roots from the days of "Sumerian Cry"
>therion
excellent band. although i was disappointed in their newest one, "Deggial"
(except for the excellent version of "O Fortuna")....their last 3 before that
have stayed in constant rotation in my cd changer.
>sentenced
also very good....i love the newest cd, "Crimson"....although i would probably
have to list "Amok" as my fav by them. even though i am partial to black and
death metal mostly.....their early deathier work really didn't interest me at
all. once they went to a more mainstream metal approach with "Amok", they got
a lot better.

don't think i've ever heard of them....but if they are in the vein of music

cds next time i am at the store....thanks for the recommendation.

i actually like it quite a bit.....IF it is done right. there are plenty of
great bands out their with female singers.

although i love Lacuna Coil....i would agree with you that his voice isn't that
great....but i love Cristina's voice....that's what makes the band great in my
opinion.
many people i know that like women singers prefer the singing of Anneke from
The Gathering over Cristina....but i am the other way around......they
definitely could use a better male singer though.

you lucky bastard....i'd kill to see In Flames, Dark Tranquillity AND Sentenced
all in one show!! fuck....i am gonna have to move over there to see such godly
shows.
i have read that In Flames may be touring the US here soon....and there is a
"tentative" listing of them playing the club near me where i go see shows
at....on the day before my b-day....so i am hoping that show gets definitely
booked....now if only Dark Tranquillity and Sentenced can be coerced to play
too!! hehe

The long anticipated follow-up to Nightwork is finally about to rise from
the crypts. Blakkheim & producer Dan Swanö will begin the recording in early
July.
There are various plans for the process of the recording such as mixing the
album in
another studio etc. The current events on that will follow. Opposed to late
previous statements about the new album, it will not be as edgy, metallic &
straight forward
as previously indicated. Blakkheim will follow his original visions he
shared with us after the release of Nightwork and go further ahead with the
horror theme, which means that
90% of the material will be a deeper step into the soundtrack department and
the three unholy mottos for this recording shall be "Dark", "Twizted" and
"Bizarre". Album/song titles & concepts will be revealed with the messenger
from the Crypt together with a full studio report as soon as the recording
have started."
...yup...
i have actually never heard them.....they any good? have any mp3's to share?
Never heard of it...what is it?

Well, if you're really nice, I can make you a copy of the album...btw,
Gatekeeper is more than 6 min. long...I don't know if you know it, but WT
has released an EP, with five tracks - three new and two remixes...quite
excellent actually.
Let me know if you're interested. Maybe we can trade something...

pretty much started out thrash in the early 80's with albums like war and
pain and roaaarrr....or something like that
then they went spacy...not their music combines thrash with a cool spacyness
and intense vocals.
pretty cool stuff.. check out napster for some mp3's

hmmm....that is interesting....i wonder if they are going to sound like
something along the lines of "Hail Horror Hail" by Sigh. while i do enjoy that
Sigh cd...i'd be disappointed if that's what ends up happening with DM. guess
i'll just have to wait and see.
>How about VoiVod?
i've never really cared for them at all. i had 2 of their very early albums
(from the mid ' 80's)...they were tolerable at best. they've since gone off on
weird tangents here and there, and none have really been able to hold my
interest.
>Well, if you're really nice, I can make you a copy of the album...
I´m always nice..you should know.. >;)

Send me a mail and just tell me what you want in return. I´ve got the "Day
Tripper" bootleg (from Bizarre '99) on both CD and VCR..and also a couple of
Paradise Lost bootlegs..to mentíon a few.
I'm a convert.......

I like The Gathering a lot. More like a progressive rock/metal band than
gothic, but if you´re not allergic to female leads, I think you can´t go
wrong when you buy "Mandylion". Anneke van Giersbergen just has the most
beautiful voice I´ve *ever* heard on a record.
P.S.

What the hell is all this talk about music? Sheesh, you'd think this was a
music newsgroup or something.

I hate voivod. ESPECIALLY Nothingface.
I left the tape sitting on a curb in hopes that someone I absolutely HATE would
find it and be subjected to it.
The Lord,

They rock (or atleast used to). "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" is an epic
masterpiece in the doommetal genre.
Never heard. But keep in mind I'm an eliteist, and a purist.
Oh yeah, and I like cookie monster voices when you want somthing to hit really
hard. But only in certian parts of a song.. like when you go from somthing
really soft to somthing really hard. Just for that little extra oomph.

great album!! i was very disappointed in their latest one, "Tuonela" though.
Nope.. I'm a firm believer that you need either
A: A really deep voice.. ala' Moonspell.
or B: A chick. And not just some skank cranked out biker whore that you picked
up at a local bar. You need someone with a voice like Monica from Faith and the
Muse.
