Really? They still taking that line, even though the online community
is moribund? I think something like a comprehensive DAS collection on
a fansite would do the band wonders.

Yeah, why so?

Hey back at ya. Welcome home.
Dar
I know right? I was really surprised. I figured DAS, stuff from old
live shows, and maybe old demos--basically anything that wasn't
released officially--would be ok. My guess is they want to have in
case they decide to put it on future podcasts, or something. I don't
know. (Or maybe they're planning to actually release a DAS compilation
at some point...well we can hope...)

Oh, I just kind of needed to take a TMBG hiatus for awhile and get
some stuff sorted out, you know. Stuff with the boy, stuff with me.
Things are mostly ironed out now, happily, although I'm still not
actually listening to them at the moment. I'm taking things one step
at a time, you know?

I'm back I'm back as a matter of fact. Thank you for the welcome! Now
where the hell is everybody? I'm trying to talk Mr. scratch into
reappearing. I'll see if I can talk to some other people too.
Speaking of getting back to things, I've recently revived Cowtown, the
Wed. night TMBG AIM chat. It's a good time, if anybody wants to jump
in on that. Um, I'm not so good at having a consistent start time, but
if you IM me (I am ThePeculiarGirl) I will invite you. Woo!

Hi, I have a story.
A few weeks ago someone mentioned tumbleweeds and I remembered that
there was a TMBG song about a tumbleweed, except I couldn't remember
what it sounded like. I looked it up on the wiki and I clicked on the
"download" link and discovered: oh, neat, Quinn's site has it. I'm
glad I got to it in time.
I hadn't heard a DAS song in quite a while. Listening to it, I was
reminded how great a song can sound in extremely low quality (isn't
that the whole point of distortion anyway?). Also, the occasional gaps
in sound left by whoever recorded it originally were familiar, as if
they were part of the song itself.
I think it would be neat if people got together and did another of
those cover albums, except this time they would cover DAS songs that
were never made into higher-quality versions.
Also: I am Asa Pillsbury. I think Google just shows my e-mail address
when I post here. I'm not sure how to change that.

That would be awesome. I would totally be in on that, if it was in
awhile when I've actually figured out what I'm doing with my accordion
a bit more. There are so many fab DAS songs.

Hi Asa! :D If you go to the "My Account" link at the top there, you
should be able to fix that.
Quinn
Okay count me in on this. Now to pick a song that I could do halfway
decently, hmm.
It's the phone-level fidelity that determines a song's eligibility, right?
So for example "Half a Boy" would not be eligible anymore since we've got
the podcast version, even though it's presumably the same recording. Or
does that limit the scope a little too much?

Personally, I think it should be more free and easy than that. It should
encourage as much participation as possible. I would just link to the songs
that are already finished as they become available. Maybe have a list at
the bottom of what's reported as "currently in production," so that you
could tell if ten people were currently working on the song you were
thinking of doing.
But you know, if ten people really wanted to do the same song, who am I to
say they can't? Let 'em all be heard, at least. Then if we're serious
about an album, then wiki voters can decide which versions make it on (with
like a two-win-per-artist limit or something, to keep it diverse). Just my
two cents.

Songs I may cover:
The Sun Is On Fire
Brainwashing Our Fighting Boys
What Is Everyone Staring At?
How Much Cake Can You Eat?
Tumbleweed
Although my creative time will be a little stemmed over the next few
weeks as my wife is having our first baby.
I already know what I'm going to cover ;)
Darrell
I think the ones I'd most like to hear are No Answer and What Is
Everyone Staring At? The latter was of course turned into Sleepwalkers
but they took out the best part.

Congratulations dude! How exciting!
Quinn
Also "Half a Boy," which is the same thing as "The Writing's on the
Wall."

Yes, it will be a bonus disk included with the first pressing of the
eventual release of "Supercharged Freaksicle".
Gee, remember back in the '90s when Flans was reluctant to release SF
because he didn't want to "flood the market"? Ever since "Long Tall
Weekend", they've never *stopped* flooding the market.
Meh, maybe I'll have a go at "We Just Go Nuts at Christmastime".

Somebody else signed up for No Answer? WTF. I totally was planning to
do No Answer. Somebody who doesn't even have all the albums, even.
Amateur.
Quinn
As the page says, multiple people can do the same song.

Yeh but...I don't know. It's not as cool that way, and I would be sad
if people were all "your version sucks this other version is way
better."
Quinn
Well, we all know the first time they Flooded the market was in 1990.
(Yeah, bad joke, I know.)

Ok I signed up for Somebody's Body woooooooo. I'm excited.
Quinn
Do it for the satisfaction of doing it. Do a song you want to sing just
because you like singing it, and then feel good about the accomplishment;
nobody can take that away from you.
I'm in it for fun and practice, not to compete with anybody. Good thing,
too, given how long it would take me to produce something polished. But DAS
isn't about polish anyway.

Ok ok, signed up for No Answer too. Yay!
Quinn

Also, I notice that people are signing up for things that aren't
actually DAS things (Tiny Doctor and Rocket Ship). That has to be
against the rules, right?
Quinn
Hi all
I was just wondering, where I can get to hear these songs? I am wild
and crazy for doing a cover.
I am a longtime fan of The Johns but have never heard any of the DAS-
songs.
What should I do?

I would suggest checking out your filesharing program of choice.
Otherwise, I can hook you up. Do you have AIM? I'm ThePecuilarGirl.
