I would appreciate some advice. Is Sakamoto's new CD 1996 worth it to buy? I
already have practically everything on 1996 on the original CD. I assume it is
a live album. Is it overproduced to the point where it sounds just like a
studio production? Oil on Canvas was like that and it ruined it for me. If it
is live, I'm not a big fan of live stuff unless it is different from the studio
and has real "life." Thanks to those who help.
Also, on another note, I want to say thanks to those of you who kept pushing
Dead Can Dance. I bought a couple of their CD's and found them to be quite
excellent. Thanks.

I just want to give my opinion on this. I bought "Oil on Canvas"
*before* I had heard the albums Gentlemen Take Polaroids or Tin Drum.
I loved Oil on Canvas and listened to it so much it was burned into my
memory like a fire-brand. When I went back and listened to the studio
productions, they sounded *dead*, dead I tell you! I think there
really is a marked difference between Japan's live style and their
studio style. I think their live stuff is a little faster, a little
livelier. Of course, you have to keep in mind that this is a very
aloof band in terms of personality...
There is also an EP out in Japan titled '08/21/1996' that has '1919'
from the album and three non-album tracks.
Craig.
I bought it a few weeks ago and am real happy with it. It is
classicaly oriented, studio. It's sometimes jerky, but fun. I don't
have any other versions of the songs represented here so I can't
compare them.
Wait a while and it'll be in the used bin, like the one I found was.
Then you'll only have to like it half as much.

but,
if you had actually seen japan live i think you'd be very disapointed at
oil on canvas,it's so over produced, all the energy and mystique is lost...
i would recommend just about any bootleg over oil on canvas...

I had almost the exact same experience... Oil on Canvas was my first
exposure to Japan, and thereafter all of the studio stuff sounded
listless to me. It makes me curious about David Sylvian's live
recordings. (I've never heard any)

Really? Know where I might acquire one?

Same here. I had the exact same reaction too... and the ironic
thing is _Oil On Canvas_ is about as "live" as Richard Nixon.

I just recently purchased "A New Dream" David Sylvian and Robert Fripp
live in Tokyo and I must say it is very very GOOD. I especially liked
the different version of "Riverman" on it. The sound is excellent.
Best live recording I have ever heard. At the same time, I also
purchased Japan's "European Son" live album and all Ican say
about that is "Eh"

Where did you find this? I've been looking for sometime with no
success. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
