Thursday 11 March 1999

Former Spice Girl wins £1m deal for her story
By Nigel Reynolds, Arts Correspondent

GERI HALLIWELL, the former Spice Girl, has joined
Britain's literary elite by selling her first book,
her autobiography, for a sum believed to be near
£1 million.

Transworld won a fierce bidding war in Britain,
buying the book which is nearing completion for
between £500,000 and £550,000. Her British literary
agent, Mark Lucas, this week also sold American
rights separately to Dell for what is believed to
be a slightly lower figure. Yesterday a publishing
insider said: "It's similar, I think, but may be a
bit lower than the Transworld deal because the Spice
Girls are not so big in America." Mr Lucas refused to
discuss the figures but volunteered that the deal
might be "a record-breaking scenario".

For a first book, the figures are staggering. They
propel the Watford-born pop star, who parted from the
Spice Girls last May because she wanted to pursue other
interests, to near the top of the publishing tree. The
deal compares favourably with the reported £1.3 million
paid to Monica Lewinsky and Andrew Morton for Monica's
Story and the £600,000 believed to have been paid to
John Major for his memoirs.

It puts Miss Halliwell, 26, who was once a gameshow host
on Turkish television, way ahead of most fiction writers.
Last year, the British first-time novelist Amy Jenkins
is believed to have been paid £600,000 for two books.
Vikram Seth was paid a "staggering" £250,000 for his first
novel, A Suitable Boy.

Transworld, which will publish Miss Halliwell's memoir in
October, beat three other publishers for the British rights,
including Penguin which had gone to bizarre lengths to win
the race for what is likely to be one of the hottest books
of the year. Last week, a classified "lonely hearts"
advertisement appeared in the London Evening Standard
stating that a 63-year-old publisher was seeking a "No 1
best-selling author, 26 for relationship to blossom this
autumn". The 63-year-old publisher was Penguin.

Despite the huge sums, Mr Lucas said yesterday that the
autobiography was "not a kiss and tell memoir". He strongly
denied that it would contain sensational revelations and said
that it was "an inspirational book about a journey of our
times" of a young woman learning to cope with unexpected
success. He said: "It's very, very important that people
understand that this book is her view of how she found herself,
rather than changing room gossip. She is very, very special. I
think that she is one of a handful of late 20th century icons."

At Transworld, Miss Halliwell, who studied A-level English
Literature, will join a stable of other best-sellers, including
Joanna Trollope, Bill Bryson, Jilly Cooper, Terry Pratchett and
Germaine Greer.

Alison Burrow, senior editor at Bantam, the Transworld imprint
that will publish the book, said the company hoped to sell
200,000 hardback copies before going into paperback. She said
Miss Halliwell's life, including her working class upbringing
and a breast cancer scare when she was 18, was "a Cinderella
story which will have very wide appeal". She defended paying out
such a large advance. "It's worth it. We don't do these things
lightly."
