I read an interview with SY once where the writer asked "Is Sonic Youth a
rock band incorporating art elements into their music or an art band
incorporating rock elements?"

Actually I misquoted that. It should be...

pop band incorporating avante-garde elements into their music or an
avante-garde band
incorporating pop elements?"
