Played Opeth-Still Life today, and so, the last couple times I have
played this album, I have found myself feeling bored with it. All I
can say is it's the least favorite of the early Opeth albums for me.
It has not aged well. I remember liking it a good deal when I first
heard it, 9 or so years ago.

D: Hype. When people say something is the greatest thing they've heard
in a while. see also "built up", and see also "disappointment", "death
rattles", "cut bin in 3 weeks", "Guns 'N Roses Chinese
Disappointment", "being sold at Dollar Tree", and so on.

Anyway, a couple people I know were hyping the latest Flotsam &
Jetsam. "The Cold" I was listening today, and it's good, certainly
better than the last couple they've done (I've heard) but one guy said
he's listens to it "everyday" and the other said it's the best they've
done since the first few.

I don't know yet. Certainly not going to say it's the best they've
done yet. Probably not going to say that, either.

Tom

Of course I did listen to this album right after hearing Terrible
Certainty. Not a classic without reason.

This was a coming back to give it another chance type of listen. I
for the most part have thought the same as you say here off the
initial listens. To the point of the previous listen I got about half
way in and didn't finish the listen.
After a few months of not listening, it didn't do much. Maybe I will
come back again in a month or so and try again. It's not going down as
their finest moment, I don't think.
Burnt Offerings is, I believe.
Nothing else on the list was noticed for any comments?

I think we can safely say they'll never top it. (or the chance is
very remote. Almost about as good as winning the lottery, which as the
e-trade baby says "the odds of winning is about as good as being
mauled by a Polar Bear and a regular bear on the same day".

General comment on life.

Ever notice that as soon as you

a) pay off some nagging loan
b) have some sort of extra cash
c) combo of above

Life happens.

1) A tree branch fell on my car the other day, broken turning signal
light cover $
2) my muffler is sagging on my car, ready to fall off I think, just
noticed it today $$
3) Last night while eating one of my molars cracked and I will likely
have to have it extracted $$$

Just to prove Sam Kinison was right about "life keeps on blanking you
in the *** even after your dead, it never ends."

I didn't really pay attention to what sort of instruments were used.
I was looking for songs that interest me, no matter the musical parts.
Hence the reason to have to go back and hear it again sometime.
Probably take 3 or 4 listens to get a handle on what's going on.
I did see reviews saying it's sort of a difficult listen, and not
recommended for a first album to hear by Tori (which usually is Little
Earthquakes, meaning recommended to someone who's not heard Tori
before.)

Yeah, we almost had no winter this year. I believe we got maybe 2
inches of combined snow the whole winter, and Feb. was about 6-7
degrees warmer than average for the full month.

Weather reporter, July 25th, 2012. "Today it's going to be a real
scorcher, 140 degrees. But when you factor in the heat index, it's
going to feel like 160.

I exaggerate. Probably won't be a lot hotter than what we call
normal these days.

Look at it this way, we could have been here 600 some million years
ago when apparently according to theories, and evidence as presented
on History Channel, the world was a giant "snowball" covered with an
Ice Sheet 1 mile thick across the whole planet.

Or we could have been there during the Age of the Dinosaurs when the
Earth's average temp was about 40% higher than it is today. (again,
theories and evidence put forth on Discovery or History channel)

They say (again from programs seen on History channel (Discovery, or
A&E,) that during the last ice age some 10,000-12,000 years ago, ice
sheets covered large parts of the world, and the sea level was
probably 140 feet lower than today. That on three occasions the sea
level rapidly rose about 40 feet. Exactly what "rapidly" means, I am
not sure, in the manner of a few decades or if they meant like within
a few years. In either event, that is pretty rapid.

Would you buy a Squier Strat? I know they're a value brand Fender
does, and used ones can be had for less than $100 around here.
I did go by the Music Shop. (a local guitar shop) which still stocks
a ton of guitars. I looked around a bit, but couldn't settle on any
one acoustic. It didn't help that closing time was about 30 minutes
from the time I walked in.
I didn't realize that Ibanez made acoustic guitars. Anyway about the
cheapest priced Acoustic they had was around $170. Of course I don't
believe they stock the real cheap types.

I was just looking at this one on Amazon.. (not Ibanez)

Jasmine by Takamine ES31C Acoustic Electric Guitar

And saw this line...

the chrome plated tuning machines will keep this guitar tuned up and
ready to jam for years to come.

I wonder if this is a pretty good guitar. From what is said by
customers, it's not bad.

I've had a Squier Strat for 20 years. It is a bit of an oddball, with a
24.75" Gibson scale, single humbucker in the bridge position, single volume
knob with no tone knobs, and the output jack is mounted on the pickguard.
It is an excellent guitar, it plays as well or better than many much more
expensive guitars that I've played. It was made in Japan in 1985-86. The
Japanese Fenders are especially highly regarded.

There's a Jasmine sitting on my guitar stand right now. It belongs to a
friend of mine. Nice guitar.

Speaking of weather, we're getting localized flooding today. It's been
POURING off and on all day. Hope Keystone Reservoir doesn't flood, as I

Squier makes several different models of guitars. The cheapest is the
Bullet, which is a really good value at $119. The most expensive Squiers
besides the Jim Root Telecaster and the J Mascis Jazzmaster are the Classic
Vibe models. The CV models give Fenders a run for their money.

So a used one at $75-100 probably isn't too far out of line for a
Squire Strat, then?

So it possibly wouldn't be a bad choice for a beginner. Which in
essence is what I am. I have played before, but it's been many years
since I played, and I did not really get very good when I did play.

Does it play well? Did you play it some?

The Ibanez acoustics they had were in the $250-300 range, I believe.
As I said I didn't get to look very closely. The one I saw that was
the cheapest they had was around $150. A brand I didn't know, and not
sure I could guess. They did have three resonator guitars in a glass
display case as you walked in. Priced around $800 and up, not
National, but probably pretty good guitars. Apparently they had a
Gibson acoustic they wanted around $2,500 for. Some guitars were used,
some new. There was so much to look at and so little time.
I did also go to guitar Center, and they had an acoustic guitar for
$3,299. I didn't get a look at the brand, as it was up high on the
wall, out of reach.

If money were no object, we'd all buy the top of the line guitars, I
suppose. Does the Jasmine play pretty good? Because I believe used
ones can be bought on Amazon for about $70. Yeah, the Jasmine S35. Of
course, a new one can be had for $79.88 They had a GS330s Takamine
listed for about $265. Which is not the value line, not the most
expensive either. The have a EF360SC with a $1,999 price, lined out,
not sure what the actual price they want for it is. Apparently you
have to put it in your cart to see the actual sale price. Not going to
buy it, so I'm not going to even look. It might be discounted a few
hundred less than the suggested retail. Ha ha. The Martin D-45 is
listed at $7.499. It says free shipping. For that price a salesperson
better drive it to my house, The salesman better be a woman, and
better tell me she'd do anything to seal the sale, so to speak.
There for a while, I remember Takamine being held in high regard.
Real high regard.
This line is great.

The NEX guitar body is a scaled-down Jumbo at heart. It has a silky
balance to the tone that supports vocals beautifully.

my vocals probably sound a bit like a gravely voiced Brian Johnson.
The guitar is $92 and change. The vocals part, though, priceless.

86 was the expected high today. Yep. July average temp on the first
day of Spring.

I see a CV one listed on amazon with a $579 price. Which is more
than some of the Fender Strats I saw which were listed at $499.

What's up with the Fender Starcaster? Is it a value line much like
Squier? The have one listed with a Squier amp for just less than $165.
It's called a Stratocaster in the product details. It's Candy Apple
red, btw.

If it's a Squier (er not re) Bullet, $75 is a bit high for a used one. If
it's an Affinity, $75 is a little less high. If it's a Standard, a Vintage
Modified, or a Classic Vibe then it's a good deal if it's in good shape.

I would get a good beginner guitar. I would try it out and see how you like
it. Remember, if you do start playing and buying more guitars, then
remember that this one was your first one and never get rid of it.

Yeah it's a pretty nice guitar. It's not a Martin, but it plays well for an
acoustic (I'm much more of an electric player.)

This guitar by itself was $329.99. I had to get Guitar Center to order it
for me. I could have ordered it online, but I preferred to order it through
a brick and mortar store.
Luckily it turned out perfect, but if it had had any defects I would have
sent it back.

I know Seagulls and Yamahas are well regarded cheap acoustics, and Epiphones
aren't bad either. Fenders aren't very well regarded. I have a Fender
acoustic and it's OK but it doesn't inspire me to play like a Martin I
played once. The difference In buying electrics and acoustics is that you
can pay $350 for a brand new guitar that is 90% as good as a $2000 guitar,
but for $350 or less an acoustic is going to be more like 65% as good.
Cheap electrics are much better than cheap acoustics. If you are going to
get an acoustic, try to get one with a solid top. Laminated tops don't
sound as good.

That is the MSRP. Street price is $349 on this one. I am surprised that
somebody is selling one at list. I doubt he sells it for that much.

The Starcaster is about the same as a Squier Bullet. It's an OK guitar but
if you pay a little more, you can get an excellent guitar.

I think it was a Standard, can't remember, really.

Thanks for this advice, I wouldn't have known a Solid top is better
sounding than a Laminated top. I haven't played around with acoustics
much.

You sound like a salesman.

"You'll already be in it for $350. That's $350 paid out, right now.
But for just $150 more, you could have this standard Strat. Which is a
good deal better than the one that is $350."

"You may get home, have some regrets in the future that you didn't get
the better guitar."

By the way, I did see on Amazon there is some sort of acoustic guitar
package (mass produced crappy one) selling for like $16.95 or
something.

It would be good for taking on stage to smash.

It was listed at that, but I believe it had a line through the price
and to see what you'd pay you had to put the guitar in your cart.

Well, I haven't paid anything yet. I probably wasn't going to buy
the Starcaster one listed there anyway.

I'm just speaking from experience. A good guitar will make you want to play
more than a cheap one.

Having the patience to sit there and fiddle with the chords you need
to play and then practice over and over again also helps. I imagine
that probably means a lot more than what type of guitar it is. I
already know I'd never be a next Yngwie/Van Halen (name favorite
soloist type guitar player) from before. I'd probably be at best a
player who gets labeled "Singer/Songwriter" type. I just need to learn
and practice chords and strumming styles and such. I am not going to
be playing solos. Or at least, not complicated ones.
Hence the questions I asked here. I want a reasonably good guitar,
but since I'm a novice player, I want one that is not going to cost 4
digits. Or some such.

One of the value line that Takamine makes, (the Jasmines) for around
$100 or so probably would fit the bill. It's not a toy guitar, and
it's not a horrible pos either. And if not that one, perhaps some
other brands value line. I don't want one that will break the bank,
and then sit around because I couldn't play for whatever reason, and
then not feel like selling because the offer to buy it back is like
50% of what I paid, and if it's a fairly expensive guitar, then that
50% loss is a lot of cash.

Tom

Hope you understand.

This is not going to be an album I play at work much. It doesn't
sound good on my stereo at work. In fact it sounds very loud and bass
heavy. Almost to the point of distraction.
In fact, I pulled the CD after about 6 songs as I couldn't take it

Ok, I went out to a different music shop, but they were closed, so I
went back to guitar center. I looked around in their acoustic guitar
room.

1) A Martin guitar for $499. (acoustic) Looked like good quality for
this price. Actually, I couldn't believe a Martin could be had at that
price.
2) A Takamine for $299 and another for $349. The one I messed with a
bit seemed like good quality.
3) An Ibanez, used for I believe it was $199.

Holding the Martin and Takamine, I could tell they were better
acoustic guitars than I had ever held in my hands before. The Ibanez
was quite nice too. They had other Martins for hundreds more than that
one.

In the room they had some other used and new guitars that probably
would be considered entry level. I believe they had an Epiphone used
for $75. (acoustic).

Looking about the electrics, I did not see the Squier for $75 I saw
last time. They did have some I believe were the CV type you spoke of,
for about $250 I think. They also had several standard Strats
(fender's not Squier) for the $499 price I have seen for them on
Amazon. They also had higher on the wall, some more pricey Strats.
$1,200 and more. The Les Pauls were set off on the wall by themselves,
as Ritchie has said that Gibson wants it that way. The cheapest one
was $799. And it did look very good. I did not look all the way up the
wall to the ones on the top close enough to see the price go up to
$2,000 or more. They were placed at three levels, and the second level
was like $1,200-1,500. And that was about as far as I felt like
looking. They did have other Gibsons mixed in their "not Les Paul"
section.

They sort of have their used and new mixed, though, Surprised they do
that.

While looking I did see a Fender Acoustic. I believe it was a used
guitar for about $149-199. Of course if I was going to buy it, I'd
probably opt for the Ibanez I played with instead. I believe both had
the cut out part to access the lower frets/strings. Don't know if
having that effects the sound quality, but I know if you're going to
play solos, you will want that access.
If I felt like money wasn't going to be a problem, I'd opt for the
Martin for $499 or go for whatever it was brand acoustic they had way
up on the wall for $3,099. Or some such.

The Takamine would probably be the best value out of the three. Low priced
Martins aren't in the same league that high end Martins is in, but you might
get a good one.

Yeah, but I don't really see it. The Martin that is. It wouldn't
make much sense for a not too good player like myself to spend so much
on a guitar. (meaning the other Martins that cost hundreds more than
the one for $499.)
Basically, from the short time I played around with them, I couldn't
really tell much difference in quality between the Ibanez, Takamine
and Martin. I suppose someone with a lot more time playing would
quickly sum up the best value of the three, and if any of the other
acoustics they had were good quality or not.
I just don't want to buy a toy guitar, or a pos that falls out of
tune within minutes of tuning it, or just plain sounds bad.

I believe it's the same anywhere new Gibsons are sold. I guess if
you don't sell new Gibsons, you can display them however you want, as
Gibson can't revoke your dealership deal and cut you off from new
guitars.
If you run a second hand music shop where everything is used/pre-
owned, then you can buy whatever walks in and display and sell it

Busted out Testament's Formation of Damnation today. Been a while.

Also had Exodus-Bonded By Blood (old original, not that re-recorded
version)
Venom-Black Metal
Darkthrone-FOAD
Blood Ceremony-ST Debut. Which had also been a while. This one still
impresses.

Going to pull a couple old metal classics that's been sitting a
while...

Raven-All For One
Running Wild-Under Jolly Roger.

It's been far longer since I listened to All for One end to end, than
UJR.

I am sorry I can't get back to you yet on this, as I have not
listened to it again.

The Ibanez appeared to be one of those guitars made of the odd type
wood. Which gives it a fancy look. I don't know if that makes for a
better guitar or not, though.
It was sort of flashy, and probably would look nice on stage under
the lights. Most acoustics I have ever seen are that sort of tannish/
yellowish bland color.
