Overall 2009 was a fairly shit year for me and I am glad it's behind
me now. I won't spew forth with the cliché's that my music helped me
though the year as that would just be bullshit. I made it through the
year due to my stubbornness and sheer bloodymindedness not to let
things get me down. Looking at the music, there have been some
fantastic new releases, but after my top 20, I would struggle to find
much to really talk about or enjoy, though there are a few that I have
recently got that are bubbling under (Overkill and Dark Funeral). Any
of those in my top 20 make it into my album of the decade list,
probably only the Candlemass stands a chance. Those other bands close
to the top have released better in the last 10 years. (Close means
Immortal, Insomnium, Kreator).

Didn`t realise you`d fallen for this so much. I played it a lot when it came
out and there was no doubt it would make my top 20 but in the last 4-5
months probbaly only played it a couple of times.

>2. Immortal - All Shall Fall

I`m a tad disappointed with this in retrospect but it`s still an album I

I really should love Insomnium considering their obvious influences and that
everyone else into this sort of stuff loves them but I just can`t get into
them for some reason *shrugs*. I`ve tried.

This was another that fell away for me but it came within a gnat`s tit of
the top 25 still. I sometimes think these lists would be better done 6
months into the following year...albums fresher in my mind may do better
than some that came out earlier in the year.

This was another acclaimed melodeath album I couldn`t get into. Don`t know
if I`m just tired of the genre or something. Hypocrisy were bubbling under
and the Absu is great.

>15. Aeon of Horus-The_Embodiment_of_Darkness_and_Light

The God Dethroned is one I`ve contiually come back to...may be their best
album.

I thought these 2 were distinctly average. Ho hum, I`m sure you could pick
out stuff from my list you felt the same about.

I`ve only ever heard / seen the promo video thing which I thought was quite
funny. Not really my cup of tea to seek out and listen to further but if you
like it I`m not going to slate you for it! Gama Bomb are tremendous fun...I
almost like them as much as Municipal Waste out of these retro thrash bands.

Overkill is 2010 anyway strictly speaking. I only played Dark Funeral a
couple of times but it was pretty good...I`ve found so much good black metal
lately that `good` wasn`t quite good enough. Been playing lots of the back
catalogue by Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega and Drudkh. Top 20 of the
decade? The top 3 of my list would all be candidates for me...tough call
though. There are a few bands that couple well sew up the list between
them...I`d have most of Enslaved`s releases in there for sure.

This continually puts a smile on my face and the music isn't that bad
either. However the kvlt twats don't like people laughing and
enjoying music. It's serious business.

Not played it recently, but it climbed out of the murky depths of
mediocrity which made up the majority of 2009's releases and stood out
for me.

The Amorphis was a surprise, that I still go back to it. The Kreator
I haven't play too much recently and if you asked me to do this list
in 6 months time I would suspect it would fall even further.

That Overkill I have enjoyed so far and will now pop it into my 2010
folder. Easily the 2010 album of the year for me....so far.

I don't know if I would say disappointed, but I have managed about 5
listens. Which is probably at least 50 less than Sons got. Decide what
to think from that.

What, no Morbid Tales?

Scored an old CD when out and about today.

Also got Human.

Oh, I will return to them, be the old classics, though. Still, if
Bruce is doing a solo album, I am sure I have more interest in that
than the next 2-5 IM albums, provided they do 2-5 more.

It has stood out for me as well. Probably 30-40 plays. Just a dozen
or so less than Mastodon probably.

It may set the bar high, but a whole year is such a long time to
find something to top an album.

It`s hit 17 listens for me...I`m judging it on the quality of Immortal`s
back catalogue I guess. It`s not as good as the bulk of it.

I thought you would, I don`t know why they bore me. The new album has some
awful clean vocals on it but the older stuff is clearly influenced by a lot
of bands I adored in the mid to late 90`s but...I can`t put my finger on it,
they don`t hit the spot.

Indeed. I still don`t understand why you don`t like the one you`d leave out
though, should really give them a proper try.

I`m not sure they`ve ever released a "classic" but they`ve been pretty solid
over the years. This album is just particularly good.

About time! Both would stand a good chance of making their respective decade
top 10s but...an 80`s top 10? Man that would be hard!!

I've enjoyed reading the other lists and I doubt anyone cares but here
is mine (in no order)

Abigail Sweet Baby Metal Slut
Legacy Metallic Assault
Defiance The Prophecy
Pelican What we all come to need
Skeletonwitch Breathing the fire
Skaldic Curse World Suicide Machine
Overkill Ironbound
U.D.O. Dominator
Epica Design your own universe
Mastodon Crack the Skye
Candlemass Death Magic Doom
Cage Science of Anilation

honorable mentions:

Megadeth Endgame (good, but not classic)

Slayer World painted blood (verdict is still out for me)

Mantic Ritual Executioner (solid classic thrash, but nothing
more, still I enjoyed it)

Heaven and Hell TDYK (this one would of made the list this Summer,
but I just dont play it anymore and feel at least for now it
represents by far their weakest effort)... still love Dio Sabbath, but
like Priest vocally and creatively I fear their best days are behind
them)

Judas Priest Touch of Evil, this one gets some kudo's for the set
list, but some of the performances are so great (vocally) and some of
the songs are just recycled from their dvd.... so IMO it would of made
a better bonus cd than regular release or even free mp3 downloads...

I think it's interesting that almost everyone includes Candlemass and
Mastodon. Mastodon especially is the best concept metal album in a
long long time if not ever.

I've heard worse clean vocals on metal albums than that. I don't
know, maybe it's too much miserable bastard type stuff for you.

Just didn't dig it at the time I heard part of it, or almost all of
it as I remember they had the whole album streaming there for a while.

Yeah, it would be impossible to really do it justice. As soon as you
set a top 10, someone would add 10-20-100, 1000 CD's that would make
you second guess your memory.

Technically a 2010 release.

HS, ffs, It's pretty damn good.

Not for me it isn't. I like it end to end, and that's a first
probably now going back to SoH. I don't like any album by Slayer end
to end since then. I like most of Seasons, but do skip some here and
there, but I haven't listened to Seasons in ages.

2 listens. Not counting listening to part of it on that streaming
website. Probably listen again, but it may be a while.

I know the Mastodon is a concept album, but I shudder to think of
trying to explain the story in any way. I know I just stated it to be
the AotY, which is a two-fer for them, but when I think concept album,
I think of a solid storyline that flows through the whole album. An
audio movie. If you will.

Ok, tried to post something, but didn't seem to go. I have heard
Human a good number of times over the years. As for MT, it's going to
be hard to turn back the clock and keep in mind it's a 1984 release.
Will give it several listens to see how much I like it with repeated
listens.

I was speculating yesterday as to what I felt would have made the top
twenty list in 1986 from 2009s releases, and have come to the
conclusion that almost nothing would. As much as it's been a good year
for metal...it's a far cry from the golden era that was the 1980s.

Is it a bit of nostalgia? I mean those years were the foundation of
much of what metal is now. I know a lot of those 80's and if you're
old enough 70's albums were very good, and the fact that anything
released today is compared to everything you've already heard. I don't
know how that effects you, but I sort of feel like it's about
impossible today for a band to do something that is truely
groundbreaking. They can just do their best, and hope to make music
that people will like. But there's no illusion that it's all original
and such.

It's an interesting topic, and doubtless colored by how in 1986 our
tastes were not nearly as broad as today.

How much does context matter? Sure it's tough to say, but I do have a
solid bit of "uncorrupted" data on this front.

My most played metal album this year is Deceased "Fearless Undead
Machines" - a record from 1997. It was new to me this year, and thus
had no "unfair" leg up on any new metal that was released in 2009. In
fact, if it was released this year, it would be my AOTY without
question.

I wouldn't call it a vote against. I gave it an honorary mention.
It's not a bad cd it's just not up there with the other ones. It has
some great playing but as time goes on I look at it as an extension of
the bonus tracks they did for the greatest hits rather than an album
that is in the same league as the other 3. I wouldn't be surprised if
my opinion changes, it took me years to appreciate Dehumanizer but
there is one thing there is no denying and that is in the vocal dept
and the up tempo Neon Nights, Mob Rules, ComputerGod dept the record
is lacking compared to the previous ones. I think it is impossible
to judge records like this from bands who you have followed and liked
for so long until there is some distance to put them into perspective.

You said the same thing regarding Nostradamus.

About Slayer, I wasn't interested in this record too much after the
last one went forgotten in my collection, but it has worked it's way
into my playlist. I didn't want to comment either way, but as much
as I appreciate what Mustaine is doing and liked Endgame, I never play
it, usually opting for the one of the first 4 if I am in the mood.

That can only happen for me if it's some band I've never heard
before. If I have albums by a band, and have listened, then it's going
to be colored by expectations and "baggage" from the other albums. I
did like the songs I heard off of that album, but I've never heard
anything from them before.

Well, ok. I can see this opinion. I liked the album, but it's only
got about 15-20 listens. If I really liked it, I imagine I'd double
that.

Difference being I think the Mastodon is more kick ass all the way
through. At times on Nostra, it seems like JP forgot they're a metal
band. That could be good or bad, I guess.

I imagine it will never be rated as highly by most MD fans. I know
it will take 100's of listens to get anywhere near what PS and the
like got.
I don't think it will get there from here. Still, I do like both
albums a lot. Not so hard to believe with MD, as I liked the last
couple as well, but it seemed like Slayer became a "we can get a few
songs right, but not a whole album type band. I'm just happy I can
listen to it end to end, without skipping much.

So many influential / classic thrash albums came out between 1986-88, for
those of us of a certain age that period will forever be the golden one.

I just checked itunes though and I only have 26 albums from 1986...so
thought *surely* something from `09 would scrape into a top 20? Especially
considering one of those 26 is crap ( Turbo ), 2 are non metal ( a Cure
compilation and The Smiths `The Queen is Dead` ), one is a live album (
Venom`s Eine Kleine Nachtmusick ) and one is a compilation ( Rainbow`s
Finyl Vinyl ). So I`ve had a crack at it...

1. Reign in Blood - Slayer
2. Master of Puppets - Metallica
3. Peace Sells - Megadeth
4. Pleasure to Kill - Kreator

Now, all 4 of these would be very strong candidates for my top 10 *ever*...

5. Game Over - Nuclear Assault
6. Darkness Descends - Dark Angel
7. Eternal Devastation - Destruction
8. Beyond the Gates - Possessed

Definately nothing in my `09 top 20 would touch this lot

9. Somewhere in Time - Iron Maiden
10. Walls of Jericho - Helloween
11. Fatal Portrait - King Diamond
12. Riders of Doom - Deathrow
13. The Force - Onlsaught
14. RRROOOAAARRR - Voivod
15. Doomsday for the Decieiver - Flotsam and Jetsam
16. Morbid Visions - Sepultura
17. The Unstoppable Force - Agent Steel
18. Obssessed By Cruelty - Sodom
19. Possessed By Fire - Exumer
20. Epicus Doomincus Metallicus - Candlemass

But this bunch, great as they are, would get inflitrated by my top 7 from
`09.

You're damn straight on this. It will never be like that, again for

Yeah, but would they crack the top few? If I am honest, I doubt I'd
rate any metal album this year over RiB or PS.
Out of your top 20, I have heard 12, many of them a lot of times.
Since I don't have a list of 1986 albums handy, it would be hard to
add any. Although I would add Blue Oyster Cult-Club Ninja. Which I did
play a lot of times over the years. Although pressed, I'd probably
call it more arena rock than heavy metal. It's certainly not as heavy
as most of your list. If any.

No, my last sentence there "this bunch" meant numbers 8-20. I`d comfortably
slot the new Megadeth, Mastodon, Kreator, Anaal Nathrakh, Drudkh, Blut Aus
Nord and Slough Feg albums above stuff like Exumer, Agent Steel, Onslaught,
Deathrow etc.

>Out of your top 20, I have heard 12, many of them a lot of times.

Which 8 haven`t you heard? I`m guessing Exumer, Deathrow, possibly Onslaught
( don`t know if they were as big in the US as in the UK )....hmmm, most of
the rest of those would have been standard fare I`d have thought...

Sodom, Voivod, Death Angel, Destruction, Nuclear Assault Records are
better than megadeth/metallica IMO Can't fuck with slayer/kreator
tho. I'd also rate morbid visions higher, perhaps even ahead of
possessed (although I may be overly harsh on this as Seven Churches is
possibly the best metal album ever IMO. I rate it as high as RiB)

PS is my favorite album on that list, so there we disagree :)

But I too would rate the Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Dark Angel, Nuke
Assault, Possessed, Sepultura, Candlemass and possibly even Voivod
over MOP (I rate Voivod as a band _far_ higher than Metallica, but
Rooooarrrr is one of their weaker records).

Which shouldn't be a big surprise, given my well documented minority
opinion on the record.

Not a huge fan of the 'deth. As I've grown older I've realized slayer
is the only one of the big 4 that I actually love, and the rest I find
horribly overrated, but feel a tinge of nostalgia for how my ignorant
teenage self thought they were the best thing ever as I wasn't as

I`ve always loved the big 4. As I`ve gotten older I probably appreciate
early Megadeth even more...to the point I largely prefer them to Metallica
now. I`ve always loved the raaw stuff as well though, loved all that early
Kreator and Celtic Frost stuff from the get go.

What, across their entire discography? I wouldn`t have had you down for
someone who gets much from Angel Rat. RRROOOAAARRR is my least favourite
Voivod after Phobos...which are the only 2 I rarely go back to.

None of these have even come close to Metallica at their best (MoP/
RTtL). If they had found a half decent vocalist maybe I would have
said the same thing about deth. Mustaine is far better guitarist than

A charming outburst. Whilst on a purely technical level Mustaine can hardly
compete with the Halfords, Dios and Dickinsons of the world his voice is a
great pissed off sounding thrash metal one. It didn`t work so well when
Megadeth softened their sound ( although judging by the sales figures it
would seem many would disagree with me here ) but when making the music he`s
best at it suits perfectly. The first 4 Megadeth albums are pretty much
perfect thrash metal and would not improve with a different vocalist.

There are very few thrash or other type of vocalist I like less. So

I like his vocals, most of the time, but he decides to try to
actually sing occasionally. That never works out well. He should stick
to spitting out the words with pissy venom and attitude.

3. All Shall Fall - Immortal
4. Slough Feg - Ape Uprising
5. Blue Record - Baroness
6. Massive Aggressive - Municipal Waste

10. Yob - The Great Cessation
11. Black Cascade - Wolves in the Throne Room

17. Tales from the grave in space - Gama Bomb
18. Waking Into Nightmares - Warbringer
19. Death Magik Doom - Candlemass
20. Time Waits for No Slave - Napalm Death

I admit there is some stuff I have not heard yet from 2009 that might
make this list. I have not heard the latest from Anaal Nathrakh, or
that album from Ruins of Beverast and I have heard good things about
both. I also had a tough time with my last spot. I think 2009
releases from Absu, Goatwhore, and Black Dahlia Murder come close to
the Napalm album. But ultimatly I listen to the Napalm album more.

My favorite Mustaine vocals are actually on SFSGSW.

I love how, as the record progresses, he gets angrier, more drunk/

They`ve been doing that for a while, played the first 2 albums all the way
through at a gig in London last year.

Not really. I just find that I am generally in disagreement with most
things he says. He likes raw, I like polish, he likes dissonance and
I like melody, he doesn't like mainstream and I couldn't give a fuck
if a band is underground or playing to millions. He likes punk, I
detest punk in every shape and form.

Makes sense, then. I sort of like stuff from all over the place.
Although I don't like punk. I don't like Grunge, nu-metal or Metalcore

I thought the Black album is what happens when metalheads mature.
But so be it.

Tom

I hate it when performers distance themselves from previous works.
Well, if Priest would do that with Turbo, it would be welcome. I guess
Celtic Frost and Cold Lake as well. But they already disown it.

LaLonde pretty much likes to pretend he never had anything to do with
Possessed, almost as if it was something silly he did when he was an

There aren`t many guitar based genres of music I detest really...I don`t
like metalcore, nu-metal etc. but if it`s on in the background it isn`t
going to really bother me like some modern R&B or happy hardcore house music
would. I like quite a lot of punk, mostly early British stuff like The

the way of gothic metal but I do quite like some of those old 80`s bands
that the term `goth` used to be used for...although I didn`t particularly at

I usually consider myself a fan of melody but then...there isn`t much melody
to be found on Reign in Blood and it`s my favourite ever album...and I like
a lot of noisy death and black metal where melody is conspicuous by it`s
abscence. Not easy to label my tastes really, if it`s good I like it!

As SoND is still my album of the decade, then agreed that All Shall
Fall had to fucking exceptional to top it and thus where the
disappointment comes in. Having said that, it's rooted itself in my
5disc cd player and doesn't like being replaced for quite some time.
The missus wants rid of my old stereo, but I am hanging on to it for
dear life. I have told her the only thing that will replace it will
be a DAB/Wi-Fi/Ipod docking station combo unit. She hates going in
the car, as that has a 5 disc changer in and I won't let her put her
crap in it. Opethx2/Testament/Slayer and Iced Earth are keeping her
crap out.

I`m looking forward to a new MA album now that Vincent is back. Seen them a

there`s a reasonable chance of it being a disappointment but they remain one

Anyway you kind of missed the point with GnR and it taking 15 years

I was very disappointed in most of the Tucker stuff. I only tend to
play two of their albums Altars and Covenant, but those two just blows

Commented ATHEIST/GNOSTIC drummer Steve Flynn: "We're absolutely thrilled
that both GNOSTIC and ATHEIST are officially signed to Season of Mist!
GNOSTIC's debut CD, 'Engineering the Rule', will be released before the
summer and ATHEIST's yet-untitled CD will be released later in the year.

"Season really stepped up to the plate to get this done, for this is also a
highly unique situation for technical death metal. Three members of GNOSTIC
are also in ATHEIST. With me on drums for both bands, Chris Baker on lead
guitar for both and Jonathan Thompson on bass for GNOSTIC and guitar for
ATHEIST, these signings represent very significant personal milestones for
everybody involved.

"For me, the GNOSTIC debut CD is the first, and ONLY, new project I've been
involved with since ATHEIST's 'Unquestionable Presence' in 1992. For Kelly
Shaefer and me it is the first time that we will collaborate on new ATHEIST
material, also since 1992's 'Unquestionable Presence'. We'll be bringing in
our old friend and ATHEIST bassist Tony Choy for writing and touring as
well. Signing both bands is also a unique coup for Season of Mist and
indicative of their cutting-edge attitude. Both bands will be touring
together in 2009 in the U.S. and Europe, which means that we will be pulling
double duty every night!!"

Were doing a cover of YYZ on the new Atheist record we are going to record a
blazing cover of the brilliant YYZ from Rush, as you all know we have long
been fans of rush, and we know this cover is a bit outside the box of what
most metal bands do, but then again as a band we are very outside the box of
what most metal bands do. And i can confirm that it will fucking destroy,
and when people hear flynn/s version of this tune....He renders me
speechless, he has always claimed Neil Peart as a major influence, and so it
makes perfect sense to cover this amazing piece of music. i thought I would
share that with you, along with the fact that we are working hard on
compiling the riffs that will soon set the technical metal world on their
asses. We will not rest till we have made the record that we and you all
hope for when listening to technical metal, it will be a punishing, brutal
display of all we have to give..... rest assured there will not be one
stitch of vaginal metal on this motherfucker! and then in 2009 were coming
for your brains fuckers! Horns to the motherfucking sky! Atheist 2009!

What about Blessed are the Sick? An amazing album. Yeah I found the Tucker
