First of all before you actually attempt to play an easy guitar solo
it is a good idea to understand what they are. Guitar solos will be
just a melodic passage, section or a complete piece of music that has
been written only for the electric or acoustic guitar. Sometimes they
may well contain degrees of improvisation within them as you will see
in rock, metal, jazz or blues music.
A guitar solo may either be a piece of music that is just to be played
solely by a guitar or it could be a piece where other instruments
accompany it. However, this term is most commonly used in relation to
rock music. Today you will often find it is the lead guitarist in a
rock band who will be designated the role of playing the guitar solos
if any in their music.
When learning how to play the guitar it is a good idea to learn a few
easy guitar solos initially. The two which spring to mind and which
will help you get started are as follows:-
1. Sweet Child O'Mine by Guns N' Roses - For those who have never
played a guitar solo before when just learning to play the guitar may
find this a little difficult initially. This is because there are some
string skips to be dealt with.
However, when it comes to learning this particular guitar solo the
secret is to have a metronome close by. Set this to a much slower
tempo than the 120 beats per minute that this piece of music would
originally be played at. Then practice this using the slower tempo and
as you feel more confident playing it so speed up the tempo on your
metronome.
If you do find that even at a slower speed than the 120 beats per
minute you are still having problems with getting it then slow it down
further. Although you may want to be able to play it at full speed
straightaway this won't happen. If you are unable to play it a much
slower tempo initially then playing it at the right one will become
ever more difficult. Remember that every note you play is an eighth
note on this easy guitar solo so each note only gets half a beat on
the metronome.
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana - This is one of the most
influential songs of all time and although the guitar solo within it
is only brief it is ideal for those who are just learning to play the
guitar. The thing about this particular easy guitar solo is that it
actually mimics the verse in the song and so fits in well and flows
with it.
This particular easy guitar solo is one that you can attempt to play
without using your little finger, but it is best as a beginner that
you do as it helps you when practicing. By using your small finger you
will be able to play the 8th fret note as you move from the G to D
string and then the D to A string. However you need to remember that
when you as you use your index finger when playing this guitar solo
that you bend the 8th fret note.
