Some votes from me:
1. Fair to Midland - Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is
True
These guys are difficult to describe. Maybe Muse meets Dredg meets RHCP
with a dash of Primus? Well, that doesn't really describe it but whatever,
I really like this album. "Kyla Cries Cologne", in particular, is a great
song.
2. Paul Cusick - Focal Point
Depending on your personality bent, you'll either think Paul Cusick is
heavily influenced by Wall-era Floyd and Porcupine Tree, or you'll think
he's ripping them off. Personally, I like it. Comes out a bit like
Blackfield when all is said and done.
3. Deeexpus Project - Half Way Home
This one is very much a Porcupine Tree homage. The song "Pttee", in
particular, is about a Porcupine Tree concert and includes lyrical and
musical references to several PT songs. Odd. Overall, a good album, though.
Honorable mention: one of my favorite "finds" from last year, Sylvan, had
a new album this year, Force of Gravity. It's good but not their best. If
you check them out, go for the Artificial Paradise album, or Presets.

I have to say that my two favorite musical discoveries this year are (in
no particular order):
Mastodon -- while their earlier efforts featured way too much Cookie
Monster vocalization, the latest one, "Crack the Skye" is a great blend
of influences like Metallica, Sabbath and, yes, Rush. It helps alot that
it's an actual *concept* album, though the songs stand on their own just
fine.
Polvo -- "In Prism" is their latest effort after a decade-long hiatus.
By all reports, it's their most cohesive and well-produced record.
They're labeled 'math rock,' but really they've got more in common with
bands like Sebadoh and Pavement. To my ear, they're kinda indie rock
meets Rush.
Oh. And Them Crooked Vultures could get into the list after a few more
listens.
My "find" this year was Silversun Pickups. They were just barely on my
radar. I caught a 30-second live clip on VH1/MTV/Fuse? and it got me
curious. Digging through their albums I was blown away by some really
good stuff.
Check them out.
(aka phantom - this thread comes up once or twice a year here - one
reason I still lurk. and why doesn't Google Groups show my nick?)

A friend of mine had me check out Polvo and a bunch of other similar
stuff. Didn't do much for me, but you might want to check some of his
other picks out. (You probably already know at least some of these...)
Archers of Loaf, Mission of Burma, Kyuss, Natas, Fu Manchu, Mercury Rev,
Sheavy, Ween, Lemonheads, Meat Puppets, Agitpop, etc.
I'll give Kyuss's "Lick Doo" a big thumbs up for sheer entertainment
value, though.

I definitely have their "Well Thought Out Twinkles" on semi-regular
rotation when we play Rock Band. ("Lazy Eye", not so much.)
I haven't quite gotten around to checking them out more, though I keep
thinking I will.

They're really good as background music, but they're not really music
you want to concentrate on because the same sound gets boring all the
time. One song popping up every now and then when on shuffle is a
good thing, though.
(and you just thought that VT was recorded fuzzy)

I've been listening to Fair to Midland quit a bit following your
recommendation. My 15 yr old Daughter loves them :) Just taken a listen
to Deeexpus Project. Wow. They've got a drummer and a half there. Great
production. I think i'll be liking this one. Thanks again.
This year for me has been mainly about discovering Opeth and listening
to lots of Jadis and Riverside.

Oh, a blast from the past. How's that condo in Maui, Lemonhead?
I dunno about "stoked", but I've decided I like Wilco. At least the
eponymous album they released a while back.
