The Weapon.
(and not too shabby live, back when Geddy still had a great voice;

Listen to that massive crowd.

What happened that they no longer have this? This was the 80s
obviously, no era will ever measure up.

Love the outro in this performance, also.

Back when it was fashionable. What the hell were they thinking! I
actually almost didn't post the link because of the hairstyles.

Not only is that his best solo, it's the best version of it.

Of course you can't afford to go to gigs on the current tour, or they
won't let you in cos you stink so bad.
So you have no way of telling if they can still pull in these numbers
or not.
Which they can, but of course you won't believe me, because you can't
see for yourself.....

One of the great things about Rush is how their stuff can be so great to
some people, yet almost unnoticeable to others.

I like the solo on Analog Kid better, so for me it isn't even the best solo
on Signals, much less best solo in the Rush catalogue. Best is a subjective
determination at best, though. Still, I can't imagine a world in which The
Weapon has Alex Lifeson's best guitar solo.

Yes, 'best' is subjective. I wrote 'bestest', trying to include the
subjectiveness and a spur-of-the-moment-ness. Now, the solo on AK, to me
it's just shredding (if that's the technical term) that's drowned out by
those infernal human vox synths. AK is one of my favourite Rush songs,
Signals one of my favourite albums but the constant synth and echo
filler don't help. But on The Weapon and especially the solo the synths
and echos complement Alex' playing and he plays around the synths. He
starts by feeling his way around the soundscape, adding to it, taunting
it, then rips through it, it fights back then he conquers triumphantly
and leaves the winner. Now, how's that for subjective ;^)
And tomorrow my favourite will be....?

Yes, but (years back Maxx attacked the 'yes, but' ferociously, I love
doing them since then ;^) that's a standard solo, perfectly composed,
brilliantly performed, nobody could do it better etcetera. I think Alex
is better than that, or has had to become better than that because
there's always the danger of Neil and Geddy taking over. In this song he
gets the solospot to shine, the rest of the song is in danger of being
dominated by Geddy. So Alex throws in the BIG sweltering (not the word
I'm looking for) chords and goes wild and quirky in the outro (love
that). He's had to fight for attention and that made him better and to
me The Weapon solo is better because of that. Or something, film at
eleven.
