Hear that I had a crappy-ass day, one of the worst in recent memory, and
I listened to Treefingers, and it gave me a little bit of peace, even
though that sounds completely corny.
And then, Optimistic came on, and that was the song that I first heard,
and even though they call it "Poptimistic" and take the piss out of it,
the refrain about "the best you can is good enough" was enough to put
tears on my face and not make me feel like a clueless asshole for five minutes.
Radiohead has, even though people will take the piss out of me for it,
helped save my sanity, helped start me on asking the hard questions, and
helped facilitate some of the better things in my life to happen to me.
They provide the soundtrack to my redemption, and I thank them for it.
And they'll never know, and I'll never be able to tell them.
And it breaks my heart, sometimes.

Radiohead is great at being able to do this... at knowing what it's like to
be down, and knowing what to do to bring people up.
Nine Inch Nails achieves the same effect by simply showing how down one can
really be.
Sometimes, the people I talk to really discourage me about music. How can
it be such an important part of my life, and yet other people don't give
music a second thought.
I think it's very healthy to attach certain music to different parts of you.
I love how the same music can take on different forms depending on what the
listener brings to it. Music is the only necessarily abstract art.

'necessarily' abstract art? All art involves abstract thought- I'm not sure
what you mean.

When you paint a tree, for example, you can duplicate the shape of the tree,
and it's colours. If you want to be more abstract, you can paint shapes and
colours that, while they don't physically represent the tree, represent the
emotions and feelings that you get when you look at the tree. With music,
it's impossible to write a melody that is a physical representation of a
tree. To write music about something real, you are required to abstract the
idea. You have to write a melody that represents to you the emotions you
feel when you look at the tree.
Yes, but you must do the same with prose or poetry writing as well as music.

Imagine a love song with no other lyrics than "love." ^^
I Feel Love comes close, though. But there's just so much stuff that goes
on inside a human which cannot be contained in a single word. Using more
words to describe something seems so much more accurate sometimes. On the
other hand, my miswired brain seems to create funny associations off things
and I'm not always too sure if I'm really understood.. but when it comes to
lyrics, I tend to disagree a lot with the writers view of what (s)he
him/herself means. It's enjoyable to know but people don't always know what
they're talking (or singing) about, if you know what I mean. ^^
Question: What's the (mis)interpetation (sic, possibly) you've got the most
kicks off?
I picture Placebo's Days Before You Came as a mother's recite to her
unwanted baby. Chillingly, excitingly cruel. A Radiohead one: I Might Be
Wrong seems to be a positive song for the most - for me, the lyrical effect
is reversed by the music, which I feel is sort of in a letting-go -way
throughoutly cynical/ironic. I've noticed this is what I want to hear from
Radiohead, a bit sadly. I used to dismiss Black Star on The Bends because it
had life, a real relationship in it. ^-^
Another: How about misheard lyrics you've most enjoyed?
I have to think about this myself. David Bowie's Ashes to Ashes is easy to
mishear - the effect produces hilarious one-liners but nothing meaningful.

Funny you should mention Bowie. I remember being little and thinking
"Golden Years" actually went:
"It's cold in here / It's co-oo-oold / Wop wop wop"
b.e.a.
(it was much more amusing when I was a kid)
I guess I'm a kid then. ^^
--Eino, you know you've had fun when it hurts afterwards
The best interpretations ever: three very funny (mis)interpretations of
Augie March songs by people on the yahoo groups list...a very imaginative
one of "Believe Me" (it has to be, hehehe), and two interpretations of
"The Good Gardener," one being about cunnilingus and the other (actually
posted by their manager) being about Don Burke.
> Another: How about misheard lyrics you've most enjoyed?
I always heard the chorus of Bones as "you've got to feel it, Enya
burns!" :)

The fact is it really annoys me if I can't understand song lyrics. I once
spent several hours listening to REM's It's the End of the World as we Know
It inch by inch on a cassette tape and taking the lyrics down onto a sheet
of paper to know I had them right. Did the same w/Smells Like Teen Spirit
the 1st time I heard it... oddly, I guess, I have little trouble hearing
Radiohead lyrics correctly...
You're right. The kind of music we listen to has lyrics, and those lyrics
denote real things. Not all music has lyrics, and if given lyrics, the
musician still has to abstract his thought to write music.

Sweetie, you get my vote for "most likely to be secretly part of the
band" for this post. Congratulations.
b.e.a.
(i vote that you're actually thom)
my theory is that Faxman was the guy that used to hang around the band when
they were On A Friday and would bug them to let him play anything with him.
so every once-in-a-while after the band's had a couple hours practice and
they're all pissed-steaming drunk they would throw Faxman a tambourine,
cowbell, castanet, or something to that effect and they'd let him whang away
at it while they go at couple more songs in a complete drunken stupor.
a couple of practices like this and faxman starts telling his friends he's
in the band.
On A Friday becomes Radiohead. They get signed and Faxman is ready to go
with but is of course left behind.
hence my theory on why Faxman is so bitter.
well ... either that or he's just someone who's not to keen on Radiohead
the little bugger ; )

What's up. No clue who Ryan Patrick is- former regular? Who am I...?
Well, I'm an American, as I've mentioned before- right now I live in the
Pacific Northwest and work online jobs, (which makes it easy to hang out in
Usenet NGs) marketing, ad-posting and I do some telemarketing and stuff. I
read a great deal, and have been drifting through life for a while...
setting landing co-ordinates... 'Alpha' has no especial significance to me-
the 1st letter of the Greek alphabet, easy to remember- I just don't want my
name all over Google archives, for personal reasons.
I like it here. Most NGs either don't post near enough to keep me
interested, or the people don't come off as people through the screen, they
come off as stiff or dull- you people come off as people. It's refreshing.
That no one gives a fuck if you stay *on-topic* is really nice- in any other
music NG I'd have gotten a bunch of snippy reprimands if I wrote 6 or 7
posts about video games- and then the more *rational* ones would want to
debate about whether it's really a big deal, what the *purpose* of the NG
is, etc, and it would all be too dull for words or even for sarcasm and I'd
wanna slap the suckers and wake em up, but you can't slap people through a
screen (recall the futility of the Nintendo Power Glove...), so I'd shrug
off and leave.
Anyway, that's a little about me.
*grunts*
Ryan Patrick = former regular yes. I think probably ten people or less on
this ng remember the boy.
