Online Prodigy Center: New Left Frame Layout

I've read the reviews of the Online Prodigy Center on EN (it's strange
that the only people who have complained about the left frame have been
EN members), and it seems that Paul gave me a good idea - it was to put
the sections into bigger categories. So I decided on redesigning the
frame, and now it contains the links in an easy-to use form, grouped in
categories. Visit the site at http://www.prodigy.geomax.net/, and see
what I'm talking about!

This is probably only temporary, and not the final state of the page, so
I'd like to hear your comments and suggestions on how to improve the
design! Please email me at "prodigy [at] geomax.net"! Thanks for all
your help!

I'm interested in your opinion now that the left frame been re-designed.

Really? If I wanted to win that, I could put over 20,000 there. Or a lot
more.

Not proven.

Really? Care to point out those mistakes?

Fairly good? Apart from Kotta's site (which is excellent), there's no
other site whose discography comes close to it.

Thanks.

How come you only point out the most basic sections that almost all
sites have? There are tons you seem to be forgetting about, which give
The Center its real value.

>Cynically, you could say the site is an overgrown FAQ, and looks
terrible with the new unwanted

They are probably only temporary, and I need some income from a site
I've put enormous energy into.

>Just prepare to handle the daft navigation!"

It must be daft for those to whom "April 4" means more than
"Discography"!

And here are Paul's comments:

>You'd think by having all the links in a bar along the left it would
make
>getting about this site easy but it really doesn't. Because the links

Done! Thanks, actually this was a great idea!

>let down on this information packed site. There are many interesting
features
>but again they are hard to find and read at points.

Don't forget there's a search engine! (Which is sometimes much more
effective than EN's full-text seeker)

>The author has obvious talent with Javascript.

Thanks.

>A totally new design and organisation would bump my rating of

Not totally new design, but this may help a lot navigate!

Well, not just Paul. I have been trying to drop that massive hint to

It's marginally better. Keeping the 11 'main' headers there would be
better.

Well, one of the reasons I enter in the review dates on the links
pages is so that we can go back to review when sites have considerably
changed.

But when you go to a site, and see before you things like "Advised",
"opposition"... well... it doesn't help!

You seem to think that many things are odd that not many others have
problems with...yet you think your site is comprehensive and
easier-to-navigate. That's hilarious. Someone should rate your site
following your own criteria.

And those are quite amusing; I'd prefer that to the Credits section any
day.

Will it be a Prodigy concert review? Will it be a new Janus Stark song?
Have Leeroy and Sarah bought a new house? Was One Love have playing in
the background on a used car sales ad? I havew no clue, because "April
4th" DOESN'T TELL ME JACK ABOUT WHAT THE CONTENTS OF THE PAGE WILL BE.
It gives me a date, but I haven't the foggiest idea what the page will
be about. And that's what all 400= pages of your News section are like!
SOUNDS LIKE AN AWFULLY DAFT WAY TO NAVIGATE!

No no no, I know exactly what will be on that page, what am I thinking,
all thanks to that handy little explanation that pops up on my nav bar.
Thank goodness, I didn't have to waste perecious seconds of my life to
click on the page and see what's in it. Thank godness for that. Oh, wait
a minute...

Oh well, so what if the EN News is 10000x harder to navigate than
OPC...at least every single page is chock full of useful
information...oh, what's this...

"Sorry, not a single scrap of news."

Good thing so very few of the pages are like this. Oh, wait...

> But when you go to a site, and see before you things like "Advised",
> "opposition"... well... it doesn't help!

And then you look at the nav bar...whew! Glad I didn't have to be
confused any longer! Glad I didn't have to wait the whole 10 seconds it
would take the page to load. Thank God almighty, I'm saved the horror
and the confusion!

> >>A totally new design and organisation would bump my rating of

It was fine before; it's fine now. The only way you could find OPC's
navigation daft is if you are daft yourself.

Yeah, obviously.

I remember the things written by those who voted OPC superior to EN.
One particular guy, with a seething hatred for EN, answered the
question "What's the best thing about EN" with :

"The links page, because it gets you out of there!!!!!"

Now, this amused me, as at the time, we never had a links page! He
obviously never looked at EN properly! The same goes for anti-EN
stalwart Matthew 'DJ Swift' Dallas, who also gets his EN stories wrong
with amazing regularity.

So those are the kind of people who think OPC are superior. Fine by
me!

Clicks NEWS.
Clicks 1999.
Clicks April.>

Now, so far, without having actually clicked on the page for April
4th, we can see what is going to be on it.

Here's what I can see...

Week 1 of April 1999
Thu 01 Full details of Greek festival Rockwave with Prodigy
headlining. Rare 1993 Liam DJ mix on EN Radio.
Fri 02 Further details from Radio 1 and The Sun, about Liam's
Gatecrasher DJ set for June - Leeds or Sheffield?
Sat 03

Week 2 of April 1999
Sun 04
Mon 05 URL of new EN site announced. Liam DJing in Ireland this week?
Liam interviewed on XL website.

So, nothing beside April 4th, whereas the 1st, 2nd and 5th do have
some content mentioned.

<clicks on the April 4th link>

Now I see :

SORRY!
Not a single scrap of news related to Prodigy/Liam
Howlett/Maxim/Longman/Janus Stark/Pitch Shifter was found by us
today... or maybe we haven't written it yet? (check later!)
Do take a look at another page!

So, there you go. Just what we expected.

>I havew no clue,

yep, wait a minute - we've put the descriptions on the actual web
pages next to the links!

So now you don't have to drag your mouse over to the link and look at
the nav bar, because we've saved that bother for you!

No, really, you're welcome...

>Oh well, so what if the EN News is 10000x harder to navigate than

>at least every single page is chock full of useful
>information...oh, what's this...
>"Sorry, not a single scrap of news."
>Good thing so very few of the pages are like this. Oh, wait...

...On average, EN News is only 2 days a week like this.

There has NEVER been a Prodigy-related news service on the internet
that has put out more news than EN News.

There has NEVER been a Prodigy-related news service on the internet
more frequent than EN News.

Think back to the others. Tobi's list reached more people than EN,
yes, but it was never as frequent than EN. Sentinel's short lived
mailing list also tailed behind EN in the frequency stakes too.

>> But when you go to a site, and see before you things like "Advised",
>> "opposition"... well... it doesn't help!
>And then you look at the nav bar...whew!

Yeah, great. Let's drag the mouse to each link to see what's going on.
None of that pesky "display the description next to the link" business
here!

>> "I'm not gonna waste life being hateful!"
>Yeah, obviously.

A quote from a 'popular' regular's own website. Enjoy the irony.

Both EN and OPC say it's "pain," but I don't really think so...

That seems fair.

Which is the album version...and it is on the lyrics of the EXPERIENCE
ALBUM Page!!!

> Why hasn't that been noted? Why is it on a PRODIGY lyrics page?

It has...original version by Front 242/Jesus Jones. It's on a PRODIGY
lyrics page because the band PRODIGY remixed those tracks. Why put up
the Dr. Dooom remix lyrics; that wasn't done by PRODIGY at all; there's
more of a connection with a track that PRODIGY remixed than a track that
LEEROY remixed. Why bother with that at all on a PRODIGY lyrics page?

> >No, the 20+ others.

No other site has an Audio page that extensive.
No other site has a video page that extensive.
No other istes have a Humor Page that original.
No other sites have that many Tabs.
No other sites have a Buy Rarities section.
No other sites have a BPM list that extensive.
No other sites have such an informative Opposition section.
No other sites have that many lyrics.
No other sites have a polls section.
Very few sites have coverage on Castbreeder that extensive.

Very few sites have Dirtchamber coverage that extensive.
Very few sites have a History that original or extensive.
Very few sites have that much computer stuff.
Very few sites have equipment lists that extensive.
Very few sites have coverage that extensive on Reading 98.
Very few sites have that many fan reviews.
Very few sites have stories pages.

The list goes on.
This is all in one place.

This lack of respect is baffling.

Ah okay. So therefore, when I look at the rest of April, which reads as
follows:

Tue 06
Wed 07
Thu 08

Mon 26
Tue 27

Fri 30

I shouldn't expect any news to be on those pages, by your own logic.

Out of curiosity, let's see what May has to offer:

Sat 01

Hmmm...must not be anything there either. What about June?

Tue 01
Wed 02
Thu 03
Fri 04
Sat 05
Sun 06
Mon 07
Tue 08
Wed 09
Thu 10

Oh, and let's not forget July!

Thu 01
Fri 02
Sat 03
Sun 04
Mon 05
Tue 06
Wed 07
etc.

Would you look at that. No news anywhere. But wait...I click on the
links, and there is news there after all! And I knew exactly what it was
going to be, thanks to all those handy one-line descriptions!

I don't enjoy this.

I did, but you dismissed it. How about the web board, poll, news script

I'm afraid I think it's 'pain', dear, but it SOUNDS one hell of
a lot more like 'pint' to me too - Keith does some interesting
things with vowels. ;-)

*grinning* That gets funnier each time I think of it, 'pint you
tasted' ... I should rewrite the lyrics around that ...

No ... Keith's accent is downright baffling to a lot of
people outside the UK, especially when he's doing his
best to play it up. It DOES sound more like 'pint'
than 'pain' over here - I don't think those are the
actual words, but I can certainly see why he thought
so.

Not 'stupid' at all, just opting for what sounds more
logical.

There's this anti-feminist joke: (No offense Deb, it's just an example

"IQ."

Now, the point is that it's a JOKE, and it is obvious that NO women have

not even cows have an IQ of 4. MANY jokes are about things that DO NOT

As you're so fond for people to answer questions, I have a couple of

Do you agree with the following statement?

"It is wrong for Prodigy fans to write negative opinions about other
Prodigy fansites in public. Prodigy fansites have been put together as
a homage to the band by fans and should not be criticized. If a fan
hates a site, he or she should just not make any comment on it."

Well, to get there, you'd have clicked on NEWS, then 1999, then

This depends if I can be arsed to show you the scans of the Official
Sheet Music for FOTL. They're on a CD-R over to my right, but I never
thought I'd need to show anyone, as it's so obviously "pain" in that

Errrrr. Wrong.

Try this sentinel:

Take all the images on your site. Save them without any image reduction
size, making simple images nearly 50-200 kilobytes. There, now you have
more content.

Sorry pete, wrong again.

Pete: "Wah wah wah, cry cry cry... I don't know what's in
'opposition'"
Sentinel: "read the onmouse over text, it tells you what is there...
see?"
Pete: "it's not very helpful"

even though it tells you what's there, it's not helpful. lol.

I do hope this clears up the situation somewhat. I'll be off, tasting

Hey, don't be so quick to assume it's "Taste The Pain"! After all, it
could be "Taste The Pint", a new cutting edge game where you stay in

Oh, so not druids, popes, actors, transvestites,

These are supposed to be 'official' lyrics, are they?
Not to argue, I'm just checking ... the incredible number
of typos and spelling mistakes lead me to believe this
is a tad dodgy.

"I've got a bad attidude"?
You 'red to my face'???

I'd like to know where Tobi got these 'official' lyrics from,
because this is about as official as Italian 'Music 4 the
Voodoo People' book.

Not picking on you for this, Peter, as you didn't write
the book this is from, but ... no, sorry, this is very far
indeed from being 'official sheet music' or anything
approaching it.

The self-inflicted PUNK detanator???

Listen to the Empirion mix, there is NO denying that line. These other
points are good too..."official sheet music" my ass.

'Emploit the point'
EMPLOIT????

'Channels repeat complete/can't complete'
???

'I pull up on your energy day'
Noooo.

'Given astrology'
GIVEN?

'That's SOME funky shit?'
The clearest sample on the whole friggin' CD! Taken from a famous
Beastie Boys track! They would have gotten that one right for sure!!!

The list goes on and on and on....how could you guys at EN be taken in
by something so blatantly and laughably wrong!

Sheesh...

Tell me a 14-15 year old who goes to night clubs. Sure, I could go to
some underage club, but it's shit. They play shit music like out of
sync and the backstreet boys. I'll save my money, or go some where else

BYTES DOES NOT EQUAL CONTENT! Bytes can add up from poor imaging and
HTML coding. Or just a big layout which has more HTML. But you can NOT
measure content in bytes, as it is variable.

Quality, not Quantity.

And? Yah, you'd have the same stuff, just extra bytes and wasted time.

Try the alt text. That's even "on" the image. And don't give me this
"browsers don't support it" stuff, because even Lynx does, and it
doesn't support images!

Hey Pete, before you go on nagging about the left frame on OPC let me just point something out.
I've been to OPC a couple of times and I'm yet to use the frame, I mean it's all there on the main
page in plain text, all the links on a convenient sitemap. It's been there for as long as I can
remember and with that you can just ignore the frame and use the 'back' button on your browser. The
frame is just there for those who don't want to back up all the time and for those it's a very good
help but the site is very easy to navigate without using the frame.
On a further note I must say the the OPC review on EN was written in an unnecessarily negative way,
it's quite clear that you see OPC as a rival to EN and you're therefore more eager to comment the
bad things (iyo) about the site than the good things. After all the OPC is without a doubt THE most
comprehensive prodigy site on the net, it might not be the best in all areas (i.e. news,
discography) but it covers allmost every possible aspect around the Prodigy and the members and it
is therefore a great asset to all Prodigy fans on the net.

Oh dear boy, if only you lived closer to D.C.; the 9:30 Club is
all-ages, like one of the nation's most respected clubs, and ALWAYS has
great names coming through. Albeit, some of the shows that come through
probly shouldn't be all ages (GWAR, Genitortures, etc). Anyway, you're
right though; I was kind of mortified to hear Britney Spears pumping out
of the clubs in ITALY last month...eight times in two hours, maybe more,
just to suit all the American kids that were there. Uch, as though
there's not enough of it at home. Blecthh.

But I digress.

Which is why I reccommend it on the links page, and why I reccommended
it last night in Sub Mission. What's the problem?

Yeah, I get out. There tends to be certain areas in Brighton where you
would see lots of people in strange clothes at night. I tend not to go to
these places at night though because there is nothing there for me. The
"Gay Brighton" thing is not really in your face, unless you go out looking
for the it. I still wouldn't call a man wearing womans clothes, normal
though. Its not normal because most people don't do it.

I'm talking about like clubs with people DJing, not just concerts... I
know about the 9:30 club, and have looked in to getting tickets for some
shows, but I missed Prodigy (damn family vacation, damn it to hell!),
and nothing else too interesting has been there that i've heard about.

there's only 2 there. Did somebody delete something, hmmph?

I've said this before in former threads.

Which is inaccurate. Bytes can measure ascii text and binary code which
is not always content. That's why byte amounts don't matter, they can
add up from poorly reduced images and poor HTML, for example.

Well, Pete. It seems you haven't grasped the meanings of stories and
writings.

First off, OPC is a PRODIGY site. The Online Prodigy Center, meaning it
deals with prodigy related info. A writing is a text someone wrote, and
a story is a sequence of events.

Now, lets put the 2 facts up above together... This may seem a little
over your head, but here goes...

in the writings section, there are going to be writings about (SHOCK!
HORROR!) the PRODIGY!

in the stories section, there will be, get ready..., Prodigy related
stories!

Oh man, that was tough.

Which shows me a large version of the picture on the

it's official or has anything to do legally with XL or
the Prodigy.

I'm not arguing just for the sake of arguing here, genuinely.
I HAVE official songbooks for a number of other bands.
The lyrics are accurate, they're SPELLED PROPERLY, and
there's a copyright notice for each song.

That 'official songbook' could have been quickly whipped
together by any barely-literate kid with a scanner, and
doesn't merit being used as an authoritative reference
in disputes over lyrics.
