The story I read in an interview from James L. Brooks, who produced the
flick, was that the test screening audiences responded so poorly to the
singing in the film that they were cut out, hence no need for the
soundtrack.
The latter is true...the movie was completely reworking due to
horrendously embarrassing test screenings....although take it from
someone who has the cast recordings of the songs, NO ONE could have
tolerated Nick Nolte's rendition of "I'll Do Anything" :P
The way Nick talks is irritating i wouldnt want to imagine what his singing
sounds like
