I want to publicy apologise for my old city of Nashville, for it was there that
Prince and Larry hooked up. I was the one that IM'd OpnMind and told her she
should get the word through to Prince that Sinbad's tour would be in Nashville
the same night as Prince's. She said "well, I don't talk to him." and I said,
yeah, whatever, just get the message through because I know that Larry is one
of prince's heroes. Then I hear from people that were working the Sinbad show
that prince was hanging out backstage with Larry at the Sinbad thing right up
until his showtime downtown at the nashville arena. Then Larry and Sinbad and
some of earth wind and fire showed up at the club prince did the aftershow at,
and the rest is history. Y'all should all blame me.
More rambling....in that book about Sly Stone, it said towards the end Sly and
Larry HATED each other. there was even an altercation between Larry's and
Sly's people in the lobby of a hotel. Larry was married to some woman, yet
when he was on the road he was shacked up with freddy's wife. (Freddy Stewart,
Sly's brother and guitarist in the band...) Most of the people in the band
didn't have nice things to say about Larry while they were with him in the
band. They didn't have nice things to say about Sly either. Excellent book, I
highly recommend it.
Apparently, Larry's current wife is the one that got him into JW. he was
living at a JW commune in Jamaica when he came outta retirement, accorsing to
the book.
BUT, i will say, after all the drugs and guns of the Sly days, I don't blame a
man for seeking out something else. All the negativity and backstabbing that
went down...it seems a natural progression to get sucked into a quasi-religious
cult. And, to Larry's credit, he has never overtly preached JW in his music,
and he had some fine moments as a solo artist. "Hair" is one of my favorite
funk songs, as is "I Believe In You." And if the man feels the need to preach
and witness, that's his own bag. Just, to some one as fragile and vulnerable
as prince, someone that takes to someone and sucks all the information out of
their brain like a vampire, it's getting kind of scary. BUT, prince's religion
is none of my concern. But Prince being Prince, he can't leave it out of his
music, because his music is basically himself. he said in an interview in 1982
that his songs were like "letters to people set to music." They still are.
A forty year old man cussing like a sailor in his songs is a bit goofy, so his
decision not to cuss doesn't annoy me. He didnt seen to believe the songs he
sang on Vibe (the old hits), and he didn't seem to believe the new songs
either. I don't think he knows what to believe anymore. Without structure,
there is Chaos. prince has always thrived when he is under attack. At first
he had to prove himself, then he sold more records than anyone else, then he
said he didn't want it, then he said his record company was holding him slave,
and now he has nothing to fight against, so he's preaching about the Stauros.
Ramble Ramble Ramble.
Can someone add to this?
I've lost my train of thought!

The only thing I can add to this is that it must be nice to have to create
persecution for yourself. And perhaps this is one of the things that irritates
me most of all. Granted, all of us do this to some degree. But he's got the
Grand Poo-Bah of all self-realized persecution complexes. Which would be fine
if, like you mentioned in another thread, it didn't runneth over into his
music. But it always does.

I guess I've seen so many shows - and so many really great shows with true
spontaneity, like the aftershows and Paisley shows - that I've become jaded.
Seeing the same moves over and over, they lose their brilliance - you realize
they're not as spontaneous and zany as you thought, but just part of the act.
So I have to agree, he did seem to just "phone in" this performance. But at
the same time, he was letting everybody know, "I still got all the moves you've
always loved!"
Do the "Newpowersouls" have a new image consultant, or what? They were dressed
better and seemed almost coached in interview-chic!
When Sinbad went to hug Prince, he turned his head, then seemed to go through
an elaborate routine of making Sinbad give him a pound - as if to show how
"down" he is.
His ad-libs during Larry's and Chaka's performances were a little....much, I
thought.
Did anyone else notice this? While he was standing there in that dress singing
"The One", at one point he turned side ways, and at exactly the same time, a
dancer behind him flexed her bare legs. For a quick second, it looked like
they were his legs!!! LOL!! Check your tape.
I love his new extensions!

EXACTLY....mayte is an angel...and larry's wife is obviously as sick as HE
is...i thought that prince looked kinda pissed when larry was talking about the
stauros SHIT...but that's probbaly just wishful thinking....'cause i recognize
a religious ZEALOT cult member when i see one....and LARRY IS THE ONE!! :))
Wow, I didn't know this! I'd rather sene Sly jammin with P to be
honest. It annoys me that for more than half a year now, Prince fans
have had Larry shoved in our faces. I think the respect that most of us
give Prince's music was earned by Prince on his own. I don't appreciate
having Larry squeeze his way into P's limelight. Has he earned that
spotlight amongst Prince fans? No! Yes, he's the originator of the sIap
bass style, granted. But,I've had enuff. I would like to think that I am
a very open-minded person. But, I could care less about Larry, and
unfortunatley P can't see that.

he DID looked pissed. Pissed, angry, confused, hurt, and naive all in one
glance. It was spooky.

heehee. I was so innocent and naive then. I had no idea Larry was a zealot.
Please forgive me.
You are kidding right? Sugerfoot can barely form a complete sentence
these days. The BarKays were on Vibe several months ago and he looked
like he was about to keel over. Yes he can jam but come on.
