I was listening to a boot last night with a studio version of "MAD"
with Sonny T on vocals and it finally hit me.
This is the same song they use on MAD TV!
Am I losing my mind and hearing things or is
this general knowledge? I've never, eeeeeeever, heard any mention before.

Yo......I thought the same thing 2 when I heard that MAD version....... I
think either one of two things........either Prince sampled the MAD tag
line (don't know how long the show's been on the air compared to when the
song was done) OR he gave them the song..........

I think he gave them the song. There was rumor that he wrote the music
for Bryant Gumbel's show Private Eye, and I was wondering if anyone knew
anything about that.

I know that he was asked to write the theme to PUBLIC Eye (could be you are
confused about the title of the show--but then again, perhaps not--it is the
only show I know hosted by Bryant G. right now). P declined to write the
theme music--I can't remember why exactly he declined. Something about not
being able to really let loose on it or something--others here will clarify
this tidbit of information, I am sure.

I will have to check out Mad again--and I watch Mad TV and never realized
it. Though my friend and I do dig it much--"you are now watching Mad TV . .
. . . MAD!" :-)

Peace!

If I remember correctly, this never happened. When the show was in the
planning stages, Bryant requested that O(+> write the music, but I think
the idea was rejected by the network (who knows why?)

Bryant and the network wanted a laid back theme. Prince wanted to give him
something funky (for a primetime news magazine?). It never happened.

The song came first, then the show. I saw the first episode and was
listening to the theme and thought "wait, this can't be 'Mad' can it?"
because I'd never heard the song. I thought the voices kind of matched up,
as well as the music, with what Prince was doing at the time.

Has anyone checked out the credits for the theme? That would most
definitely tell us--or at least it could . . . . :-)

from what I remember when MAD TV first came out it wasn't the same song as P's
MAD, but they could have changed it. I do remember it was similar before.

As 4 Bryant's Private Eye interview, P had wrote a version 4 him, but it just
didn't fit so Bryant turned it down.

Unless they've changed the theme since I last watched, which was 3 or 4
weeks ago, the Mad TV theme was written by Heavy D.

Listen guys.. Just because something sounds remotely similar to
something Prince had sone, doesn't mean he had ANYTHING to do with
it.. This ESPESCIALLY goes out to those of you who STILL to this day
argue that Prince wrote the Ray Charles Pepsi Commercial..

T, what the hell you talking about? Prince DID write Uh-huh for the Pepsi
commercial. Apparently paid $7 million to do it too. That's pretty well
known around here. I think maybe you're referring to the Always Coca-Cola
commercials, which he didn't write.

With the Bryant Gumble show Prince did write the music 4 it (while the show is
in the planning stage),but the execs thought it didn't fit the show they way
they wanted it so they asked Prince 2 change it (yeah, like he really would).
And do soemhting more suitable, but they couldn't come 2 an agreement (P's ego)
and it never happened.

But what about Deposition and the liner notes that say that Uh-Huh is from
that very commercial? It is in writing T, so it must be true!!!! . . . . .
LOL

Okay, T. We have heard you say he didn't write it, but I think you are just
about 2 be asked 2 back that up.

I honestly don't care either way...but U know that's gonna be the next question

I submitted this question to Ray Charles on an AOL Centerstage chat a couple
months ago. However, I wasn't able to stay on to see the discussion. I'll go
back over the transcripts to see if he answered the Pepsi question and/or ?s
about O(+>.

ehhmmmm... but I have "Uh-huh" sung by the man... why is there a P-version
of the him? Was he asked 2 star in 1 of the Pepsi commercials, for
instance?

And did he also write "The Real Thing" 4 Coca Cola?

OK.. You guys win.. Prince wrote the commercial song.. I'll stop
wondering why folks just can't listen and see that the chorus is
sampled.. And Prince DID NOT WRITE IT.. Period...

That "do the dew" Mountain Dew campaign, that's Prince's too. Not many
people realize it, and he tries to keep it quiet, but The Man makes a
mint off the soft-drink industry.

he has been asked 2 do comercials 4 both pepsi and coca cola, on the first
version of the GOLD album there was a track / sege called cola or something,
and also there is a recording called coca cola credited 2 a P.R. Nelson
as far as Pepsi goes, i'm pretty sure that UH HUH was intended 4 a comercial
but i don't know if it was used, or where in the world it was used, but i
know that the song 7 was used in a pepsi commercial, but O)+> wasn't in the
video (that was in the UK i don't know about over there in the US)

Okay T, concerning the Pepsi jingle. Why in the world did Prince record a
version of the Pepsi jingle? There was a long version of the tune with Ray
Charles singing the intro..."You Know That It's Right..." etc.

Why, if he had nothing to do with it, is there a bootleg of Prince singing
the pepsi song?

There have been many songs written by others that Prince
has recorded a demo and/or full song for. So, the fact that
the song exists in a studio version by Prince does not equal
an assumption that he wrote it.
