Some parties close to this issue have asked me ( behind the
scenes : As I think I said before the degree of confidentiality
involved in some of this maneuvering makes my years of cold war CIA
service seem like transparent child's play) ) to write an update on
the situation, stressing the positive reports they and I have received
from several sources that the show's recent Buffalo tapings include a
segment so awesome that media consultants, one of whom guided several
artists to Emmy triumphs , feel certain that, if shown , this segment
would one an Emmy for the artists , RFDTV and , by extension, for
polka music. It was indicated that , as someone who writes on the
site, with a polka background, I should present this news to the
readers , rather than having "outsiders" do so. Of course I'm all too
happy to comply : I viewed the performance of the artists' concerned
which they showed me and certainly wouldn't disagree with their
assessment. These sources indicated that (a) this was important news
for the polka field and that (b) knowing this should make the "polka
world" more determined to urge Mr. Gottsch/RFDTV to enable Big Joe to
continue the programming , as such great things were predictably in
store. --- I would add on my own that readers of this site, who are
for the most part "Polish"-style supporters, now have much more of a
stake in the programming than ever because, after all, the Buffalo
taping just completed would ensure a good year+ of mainly Polish-style
programming if the show is aired and the programming continued--
Otherwise this may all be lost---not to mention, as always, the
irreparable loss to the field of the most popular and almost the only
quality nationwide TV programming the field has : Coming in the wake
of the Grammy debacle this is all the more serious.....So again, for
the sake of the music, nationwide , now, and in the future , folks,
please don't fail to let your voices be heard in the best way you can
on this.
As regards the sound and production factors, these sources also
stressed that, as of the Buffalo taping , if not before , the show has
secured the services of the best tech suport and faciities in the
business: They supplied me with names and tech details which I'll
gladly forward to anyone interested instead of weighing this post down
with that info now.
In closing, a personal note ( which none of the sources asked or
perhaps wanted me to contribute, but it's all too evident from Mr.
Gottsch's reply, reproduced on this site, to a concerned professional
who wrote him pleading on behalf of his many senior citizen BJ fans:
Unfortunately ( I've tried to be diplomatic througout this ordeal,
like the diplomats whose style I emulated in a 26 year UN career, but
in certain cases one's patience is taken to the limit) , Mr. Gottsch
replied to him, just as he has to me and others who tried to write him
in the nicest possible way on this issue , in the coldest, most nasty,
bullying tone imaginable ,without the slightest hint of compromise ,
decency, compassion or inclination to even consider anyone else's
needs or point of view: First , his standard opening "That this site
should be shut down for spreading garbage and lies " ---Sorry, Mr.
Gottsch, but since this isn't a Hitlerian dictatorship and you don't
quite have the power of Hitler yet, you don't have the right to shut
down a website for discussing matters of concern, as much as that may
frustrate you..and, as far as lies are concerned, "Radio Engineer" and
others below call you out repeatedly as the only party here who
refuses to give a straight answer or tell the truth when asked one
simple question: Are you, as so many insiders say you are, or are you
not dropping the programming?---After trying to negotiate with this
man diplomatically for months , as have several others I know, and
just being kicked in the teeth for polite requests every time ( as
they were, too) I have to give up trying to communicate with him: The
only approach he ever takes with us is bullying and wishing that he
could "eliminate" and "shut down" anyone who even pleads with him to
continue a favorite show (!?) or asks him a question ---and now you've
all seen it online, too, so the cat is really out of the bag, and I
don't think I'm betraying any confidences at this point ---- although
there's so much more that I could say and will try not to because all
concerned said "Please don't, because any more details ( or truth )
about this will just make him madder"---Heaven Forbid.
Please do urge Mr. Gottsch to continue the programming:I would
think if the response is great enough, he might just do so because I
get the impression that ultimately all he gives a hoot about is
maximizing his profits ( while taking no prisoners along the way) . In
the meantime, ,though, I hope that those "insiders" who believe they
may be able to guide Big Joe out of these shark-infested waters into
a "safer harbor" with a gentler , humane, decent family-oriented music
or entertainment network will work to do so : Big Joe , at age 75, has
given the world an awesome polka legacy on radio, TV , recording,
promoting and more for virtually half a century now : It would be
wonderful if he could continue "giving" to the field nationwide for
years to come ( and we should certainly support all moves in this
direction) but ---He never said it , but I am , and I know that
everyone else who has engaged in this dialogue on his behalf has
learned this full well, too: He deserves better---much better.
I'm sorry to all those who wanted me to try to act as an
intermediary if I've let them down by not being as "diplomatic" as
they might have wished til the very end--Maybe someone else can pick
up from here, but, as the old German saying goes "The jug goes to the
well until it breaks:" Negotations were actually the main work of my
life, and I've dealt with some pretty tough customers, but rarely, if
ever, with one who never showed one moment, not one single spark of
human decency , even in considering the documented plight of shut-in
old-age pensioners, as in this case ---I think you get the idea.
God bless Big Joe for giving us all that he has for years --and for
the sacrifices he's had to make to do it: I have the feeling no one
will ever know...
