I'm a bit confused by this record and mini tour. Reading the initial
leaked reviews of the new record, it will definitely be a challenge to
hear a PG work of just him and an orchestra doing covers. As far as
the shows, will he be digging into his catalogue... and how deep? Any
theatrics? As big a PG fan as I am, it just seems that him standing
there or behind the keys for two hours with just an orchestra may be
kind of <gasp> boring (comparatively speaking).

Besides the few reviews I read - most of them raving about it as an
"essential" album for 2010 (yeah, ridiculous I know, it having been
written in mid january...) - I have listened to the full Scratch My Back
album non stop since before xmas, and while I have heard a few
complaints from other fans that lament "static atmospheres" and the
"sameness" in the overall tone and arrangement of all songs, my opinion
is exactly the opposite.
Dynamics and intensity are what this record is all about.
Thanks to the orchestra and the 'no guitar & no drums' approach, his
voice emerges as it never did before, on each and every track. Some
arragements are 'cinematic' and at times even 'bombastic'. Doesn't
matter. It's such an emotional tour de force that shivers keep running
down my spine throughout it all. And that's the only "challenge"...
In terms of live, I'd be glad to just sit in a room/hall and listen to
PG play piano and harmonize with his voice for hours. But it's true:
transposing this kind of work in a live situation is a huge risk.
Not because of an eventual lack of "presentation" (in fact I'm
personally hoping there will be nothing to distract from the music this
time!) but because Peter being such a perfectionist there are thousands
of little details and nuances that "could" go wrong.
On the other hand I also trust Peter to deliver his best every time he
gets on stage: and that's fine with me.
Scared of being bored? Don't go.
I'll be at both London shows (#169 and #170 in my very personal
tourography - I just finished counting them!) and can't wait for them to
happen

I'll be there (NYC) and I look forward to the new record. You did not
answer about his digging into his catalogue at the shows. Signal to
Noise would certainly be tops as a great orchestral live song. Others
I can think of are Rythym of the Heat, Here Comes the
Flood.............................? I'd love to hear 'Back in NYC' at
Radio City, but we all know I have a better chance of hitting the
power ball lottery for 100 mill. ;-)

I do agree about Singnal, but I'm sure we'll be in for a few surprises.
It depends wether he'll go for a "rearrangemet" or a
"deconstruction/reconstruction" of his back catalogue. He sure delved
into some 'oddities' during the last couple of tours.
Anyway,rather than wish for something, I'll personally just be happy to
take anything at all... :-)
On the other hand, he has talked about his will to try and do
"something" visual to accompany the music: but I guess he hasn't made
any final plan yet, andf it will probably just revolve around videos or
such.
I'm curious wether he will really be at the piano this time - at least
for the full "Scratch My Back" part of the show - or leave it, as on the
record, to some other musician.
Oh well: only another 6 weeks and 2 days before we find out!
