to their credit, they don't really try to re-live the glories of their
previous two works. shorter, poppier numbers, and plenty of fantastic songs,
full of brewing climaxes, sublime beauty, and at times an overwhelming
intensity. in my opinion, their second best album, behind agaetis byrjun.
and that's pretty damn good.
clue to kalo - one way, it's every way
gorgeous, organic indie with electronic flourishes, a very nice and laid
back record full of intricately-worked melodies, which seem to stay
interesting but never get overwhelming. well worth a look.
bright eyes - i'm wide awake, it's morning
arguably conor's finest album, along with fevers and mirrors. a lot less
pretentious than previous album, he sticks to his strengths - strong
indie-folk songwriting, and ditches many of the ambitious flourishes which
rarely paid off in his other albums. his songwriting is strong, his songs
catchy and affecting, and the album is cohesive and relatively filler-free.
kanye west - late registration
perhaps not as fun as "the college dropout", but kanye's sophomore album is
a natural progression from it, with a slightly darker tone (less skits, more
serious songs). the songwriting is still good, though, and kanye is the best
hip-hop producer in the world at the moment. jon brion also adds some nice
flourishes, especially in "gone".
antony & the johnsons - i am a bird now
perhaps this year's sleeper hit, a sincere and polished effort. every song
is strong and the guest stars (an impressive list, with lou reed, rufus
wainright, devendra banhart, boy george...) never overstep their bounds,
always complementing the songs without overpowering them. i read a quote
saying that this album had the potential to be extremely camp, and it's
strength is that it isn't. a great quote, i think. essential!
..and:
htrk - nostalgia EP
dissonant drone/noise from melbourne, with some amazing guitar work creating
walls of noise and feedback while focus basslines, droney vocals and sparse
drums lurk beneath the surface. an alienating, cold, lonely and captivating
(36min long) EP.
common - be
a very laid back, cruisy hip-hop record produced almost entirely by kanye
west.. short, skit-free, and with little filler, a very enjoyable,
accessible, and high-quality record.
glenn richards - closed off, cold and bitter: life as a can of beer
solo EP from the frontman of augie march, perhaps australia's best band. not
to the standards of that, but still really good. bottle baby is a standout,
a lovely acoustic ballad.

he is, especially in regard to music. at least that's my opinion. i'm
not sure if these were all released this year or not but i like the
following:
wolf parade - apologies to the queen mary (or something along those lines)
secret machines - now here is nowhere
sigur ros - takk
nin - with teeth
arcade fire - funeral (i'm pretty sure this was released last year but
it was new to me this year)
also, i discovered a bunch of old stuff that i never got into for one
reason or another that i now am really into - belle and sebastian,
mercury rev, and this mortal coil. i also heard the new devandra
banhart and broken social scene albums but not sure what i think about
them yet. i like a few songs on each but not enough to call them faves.
though i am going to see bss in january and can't wait. never saw
them live so looking forward to that show.

saw them a couple months ago and got tix again for february. takk is
definitely my fave album of the year! and the live show was beautiful
and joyous. it was like being on ecstacy but better.

Yeah, they were here (australia) for the first time in august and it was
perhaps the best show i've been to.
and they're back in april! hurrah!

Hmmm, it will be 2-3 weeks and I'll be with a buddy who isn't in to pj, but
I'll certainly do my sneaky little best to set the date appropriately if
there are any shows in the area close to the intended time :)

He talks about assimilating into the local life while he's on holiday, but I
don't think he'd want to take it that far ;)
So Mirella, how many days would we need in Amsterdam to see everything we
need to see? I'm not into touristy landmarks and statues and things like
that, just the fun stuff.

It depends on the wheather and if you like it there. Some tourists spend
weeks in Amsterdam just doing nothing. You could see a museum or two (not
just paintings), walk around, see a concert maybe. You'll need at least
one day and ofcourse if you like it you can stay longer and get to know
the city a bit more, absorbe the unique atmosphere. I wouldn't waste too
much time in Amsterdam but that's just me.
Maybe someone else can advise you better, heheh.

Hehe, I think it's funny you ask Mirella what to do in Amsterdam when she
lives close to the rival city Rotterdam. But you couldn't know that
ofcourse. :)
When you're in Amsterdam you should at least go and see a movie at
Tuschinski. It's an old (movie) theatre that got renovated not so long ago
and it's just a really nice place to go and see a movie. Check out these

Also check out the coffeeshop De Dampkring. They used this to shoot some
scenes in Oceans12. They got photo's on the wall of George Clooney and
Brad Pitt standing behind the counter. It's also a pretty weird interior

The fun stuff is just basicly walking around and discover things. The
Jordaan for example is a nice area to walk around.

Hehe, no, I just knew she was close and could advise me a hell of a lot
better than anyone else I know :) And I trust her, so that helps too :)

Well, depends on what you consider "fun"... I'm not one for museums
either, but I loved the Van Gogh museum. Other museums are quite
interesting... only in Amsterdam, such as the Marijuana museum (quite
interesting), the Erotic Museum, the Sex Museum, the Torture Museum (I
got physically sick, but my boys liked it)... the narrowest house in the
world (a mere 7 feet wide from the time when buildings were taxed by
their width), the "cafes"...
I'm told the Red Light District is interesting, with girls in windows
for viewing (How much is that doggie in the window?) and everything and
anything for sale... The central train station area is sleazy; I like
the Leidesplein area to stay in. Lots of great food from all over the
world.
I'd say 3 days is plenty to spend there, 2 if you aren't into getting
high. Amsterdam is fun, but I guess it depends on what you like to
do... email me privately, and let me know what you like, cities or
driving in the country, resorts or whatever, and I'll give you some
suggestions...
