It's very quiet here which got me wondering

1 who's the most prolific poster (and where are they now)

2 what's the maximum number of posts we've had in any one day?

3 What's the longest thread we've ever had ?

On three ...........The one where I said that the picture of PS with GWB
was not one to keep (or something similar) had hundreds of posts.

Not sure if that was a good thing or not

3 What's the longest thread we've ever had ?

Well, maybe it isn't "bound to win a prize" but I remember the thread about
discussing / designing / organising the AMPS T-shirt was very very long
(2001/2?).

Is there a prize (or pestigious award) by the way? I'd hate to forget to
sign /send in the paperwork (tho I'd be in excellent company).

Probably right after the Simon and Garfunkel performance earlier

regardless, the fact that they weren't used, even when the most powerful

yes, CONTINUED. Were you not following the news very closely in March?
Or were you too deafened by the cowboy rhetoric of that liar who was
determined to go to war before the inspections even began? Whose going to
want to drop all their weapons anyways when the most powerful country in
the world is determined to go to war with them no matter what they do? If
Bush would've shut the hell up for a second, we could've made Saddam
powerless long ago by ending sanctions on his people & turning them
against him...instead we led our soldiers to kill the people we were
supposed to being liberating, and now there's more support in Iraq for
Saddam than there was before the war started. Mindless violence isnt
always the only answer. And proposing we out-think Saddam instead of
stooping to his level doesnt mean I like Saddam. Unless you use the logic
of a 10 yr old on the schoolground.

Well now the US is out there inspecting Iraq for themselves...have they
found anything the UN inspectors didn't yet?

gee and that war was so close, wasn't it? I mean our weapons were barely a
match for all those WMD that Iraq used against us, the most powerful
nation in the world...no wonder it took us
so many years to finally defeat them...they obviously were a threat! oh
wait a minute...what do you mean it only took a month or so & they didn't
use any WMD against us? :)

Yes. How can you not? I'm not convinced it was a good thing. We can see now

had to be done. The alternative was just to give him more nad more time. Time

I guess, more than anything, this proves that polls can be skewed to prove
anything you want to prove. Polls show that 70% of Iraqis support the American
presence. It is clearly imperative that we now find Saddam though.

IMO, it takes the logic of a 10 yr old to still think there was a reasonable
alternative.

So, what do you think? Do you SERIOUSLY belive that Saddam rid himself of

will be found.

Thomas,
Please do not confront Bill on political issues, whether your
arguments are logical or not. We will have a happier newsgroup without any
Iraq-related discussions. Bill has turned nice again lately, and it's much
more fun. Arguing these points will not convince him. You could
demonstrate every single point you make with all kinds of evidence, and you
still will not change his mind. And he will not change your mind. It will
only get ugly. I understand that lively discussion is what newsgroups are
all about, but I promise you this will lead nowhere. We've been down this
road before. It's wasted energy. Give peace a chance. Keep hope alive.

yes, this is one the main reason. The incapacity (or the unwillingness) of
this country to protect some of his citizens from others. Today was the
official celebration of the "rafle du Vel d'Hiv" where 13.000 Jews were
arrested in Paris and sent to death. Not by Germans but by french policemen!

So am I french? Yes. But am I patriotic? How could I be? And yes I've got a
lot of admiration for the US who, despite their mistakes, have never
persecuted Jews.

Correct. Yiddish newspapers were also the only newspapers to write a piece
of article when a black man was murdered. Many of these newspapers also put
a placard at their window when such a crime happened.

really does appear to be correct ...

Ochs senior was the son of traditionally religious Polish refugees, who met his
also-Jewish wife in her native Scotland while he was attending medical school
with her brother. The family lived in Jacob’s mother Fanny Ochs’ Kosher
home in the Lower East Side while Jacob served in the Army. He was discharged
for manic depression, and was relegated to the field of institutional TB care
in Far Rockaway, Perrysburgh NY, and, eventually, Columbus, Ohio. Moody and
withdrawn, Phil became, under his mother’s encouragement, a superb
clarinetist at local conservatories. When he was assaulted for being a
"Jew-boy" he fought back, and his attacker became his sole friend.

The press will go after political figures for all sorts of reasons.
I don't have reason to think he's much less of a liar than Clinton, except
that he hasn't had as much time in office. But then I'm not sure he knows if he's
telling a lie or a truth much of the time. Maybe it's just his demeanor, but he
comes across as the loveable speech-reader more than the President. It just
doesn't seem like he's entirely running the show. I think Dick Cheney is probably
the brains of the outfit.

Bush said the folowing last week:

"We gave him a chance to allow the inspectors in, and he wouldn't let
them in."

Him, referring to Saddam, the time referenced being earlier this year.
That is a lie - I'm not saying anything more, other than it's not hard
to find instances of Bush lying. Same for Clinton. Even our own Jean
Chretien. But to say that he *didn't* lie, or misrepresent, is just
plain idiocy.

Depends on your point of reference. How do you want to look at it. It's clearly
less of a lie than Willie Clinton (which I took personally, because he pointed
his finger at me when he said it) saying "I did not have sexual relations with
that woman..." See, Saddam id pure evil. Saddame should have been removed. The
same people who are looking for every instrance of GWB stretching the truth
will justify every instance of bullshit in a Michael Moore ""documentary.""
This bothers me. I'd be less defensive of GWB if a lie was always a lie, even
if it was told in what is perceived to be a good cause. Still, for me, the
bottom line is Saddam is evil. Saddam did keep inspectors out of Iraq for
years. Who knows what he did with the weapons during those years? The odds,
however, are not good that he chose to destroy them and not tell anyone.

The mainstream would be that from which most people get their ""news"" (and ABC
seems quite proud of pointing out, several times a day, that more people get
their ""news"" from ABC than from any other source). My gripe today, however,
is with NBC. I tuned in a ""news"" program this evening, simply because I
didn't feel I knew enough about what's going on in Liberia. Well, it was
honestly 15 minutes into the ""newscast"" before Liberia was mentioned, THEN
the local station cut in to tell us that all storm warnings and watches had
expired!!! WTF?!?!?

That's all fine and good, but you must admit that he did lie - and
this particular lie is strange, even for Bush. I mean, he could say a
whole bunch of other lies, rumours and innuendo, right (hasn't he in
the past - check out www.bushwatch.com for an annotated archive), but
in this case he actually seemed to not have a clue as to what the hell
has been going on for the last ten months. It's not that it was for "a
good cause," as you imply, but almost has if he has a blatant
disregard for, and disdain for, the truth. Finally, I don't know how
one lie can be "less of a lie" than another ("clearly" to boot).
Either a lie is a lie or it's not. Perhaps Clinton lying about his sex
life is worse to you than Bush lying about a war that has killed too
many of your fellow citizens, but it doesn't make it any less of a
lie. And it doesn't have anything to do with Saddam being "pure evil,"
or Michael Moore's mishandling of the truth - then again, I must be
one of those people who justifying everything MM does (which sort of
doesn't fit with the beginning of this run-on sentence).

I guess the point is that if we weren't so ideologically blind, and
could call a spade a spade or a lie a lie, regardless of its utterer
(new word? What does the jury say?), our democracy - and our discourse
- would be a lot more meaningful.

Oy. I don't think "most people" actually get news. Some of them try
and get it, but have an undeserved faith in corporate media. But I
think a lot of people are content to toss their hands in the air and
give up. I mean that - really content. It's sad, and if the FCC has
its way, it'll get a lot worse. Bill, do you ever watch CBC news?

Works for me. If "utterance" & "utterly" (but no real connection
context-wise w/ the latter) are okay, why not an "er" suffix? Granted, the
two "er"s in a row are a bit awkward, but hey, its meaning is clear. ;-)

Just curious. It and PBS (especially NOW with Bill Moyers) is about
all the TV news I can stomach. I enjoy CBC radio and NPR, and some
talk shows (Charlie Rose) and I guess 60 Minutes (it's just so smug),
but really, I decided a while ago that braodcast news is for those who
don't really look for depth. Thank goodness for the proliferation of
print media on the 'net, not to mention the diversity of viewpoints,
and, yes, forums like these.

Tell ya what; I did tune in the CBC on February 1 of this year (the shuttle
disaster). Earlier I had been watching the Fox network, and they were reporting
that the vehicle came apart over Nagadocious, TX. I tuned in the CBC, and saw
them reporting that it was Nagadoches. Without question, I immediately
concluded that it was the Fox people who were morons.
Moyers is way too liberal for me. Too bad. He used to do good stuff.
I stopped watching TV news back during the Tonya Harding/Nanct Kerrigan
incident. That having happened here, it was, of course, even bigger news. I
came home one evening and turned on the TV, and the first 15 minutes of the
news was about this. The second big story at the time was Loreena Bobbit.
Another then minutes. Their third story that night was about this guy who had
wanted a sex change operation, but couldn't afford it, so, he got himself a
steak knife...
When they showed the video of the bloody chair where he had done it, I knew I
didn't need to be seeing any more of this.
