Thanks, guys. A few bits of trivia: just for a change, I made it as a
Paul Simon arrangement and not a Simon & Garfunkel arrangement. The
lead guitar on the left side fills the space in the arrangement left
by the absence of Artie. There is no vocal harmony at all, not even at
the finale. I wanted to see if I could record a ballad without a
harmony, and the upside (in theory) is that you get a more intimate
performance. There's no left hand on the piano for 99% of the piece;
the track is so busy you don't miss it. I tried putting in a counter
melody, but it was detrimental. PS once said you couldn't put a
counter melody in The Boxer because it would be too busy, and that's
just what happened. There were so many things happening, especially in
the finale, it needed a lot of editing to prevent it becoming like
mush. It's always hard to decide whether to use the "Now the years are
rolling by me" verse or stick with the instrumental, so I compromised:
the instrumental part is there, way down, played by a French horn. I
have a feeling it might drive some people nuts now that I've pointed
it out. I tried recording the guitar part with a pickup and then with
acoustic mics, and the pickup won. I never thought a pickup could beat
acoustic mics, but for this arrangement, it did.
