Britney Spears, U2's Bono, Dave Matthews, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, No
Doubt, Tom Petty, and Sheryl Crow will all pay tribute to Elvis
Presley in an NBC television special set to air in late November or
early December.

Elvis Lives will feature artists performing at least four tracks from
Presley's current No. 1 album, Elvis 30 #1 Hits (allstar, Oct. 9),
according to a spokesperson for NBC. The special will also feature
interviews on Presley's legacy with some of today's biggest stars as
well as various footage from the worldwide coverage of the 25th
Anniversary of Presley's death this past August.

Additional celebrities committed to participating in the hour-long
special include Public Enemy's Chuck D, comedian Denis Leary, actor
Dennis Hopper, and NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Well, this is one I won't be watching. Never saw what anybody
saw in Elvis myself. JMHO, now.

Hi moody! Of all the singles Elvis released it seemed to me that
only about ten or twenty of those were songs that I liked. I had
a chance to tape many of his tunes onto cassette some years
ago (from some greatest hits CDs) so I managed to fill one side
of a C-90 cassette...and for me those are about the only tunes
by the King that I'd listen to. I don't listen to the tape that much.
Tunes like Kentucky Rain, In The Ghetto or Suspicious Minds
aren't that bad (and, for some reason, I used to like G.I. Blues).

You're not the only one who felt that way...you sound a lot like
my mother when it comes to Elvis. She couldn't stand him and
she used to say some nasty things about that old pop king! ;)

I can't watch the movies he was in anymore...to me, his acting
is about as bad as Madonna's.

I must say that I like the new 'mixed' version of an old tune that
I've heard titled Little Less Conversation. It was put together by
some Dutch producer. Now I have to decide whether or not to
buy that darned CD. I used to like the song, so the new version
isn't too bad (it's interesting to hear I suppose)! I've only heard it
few times which may be fortunate because it sounds like one of
those tunes that I could grow tired of rather quickly. hmmm...

Well, I wouldn't be nasty, he just didn't do a thing for me.
In fact, I had no clue who he was until The Beatles came along.
Remember the radio staions having a poll to see who would be the KING
of Rock & Roll? I must have called in 80 times for the boys!

LOL, that's so right it's not funny. It was BAD.

I was never big into Elvis. Not like a girl friend of mine anyway. I'm
sure there have been and are songs of his that I sing along to....even
today.

I'd feel bad if I were Elvis being called the King musta sucked :)

Well...I guess my mother wasn't overly nasty with her comments.
Mostly, she said things that seemed to imply that she wished our
dear Elvis (well...to put it mildly) should simply go away. hehe

Madonna's in a new movie! I saw a short clip on a movie review
show last weekend. I forget the title of this new flick but the two
reviewers don't exactly give Madonna's acting ability two thumbs
up. hmmm...she certainly does seem to land some important roles
though.

I wonder if anyone has had the courage to suggest to Madonna
an acting career isn't in the cards? She'd best stick with singing.

What's anyone ever seen in Elvis?

Well a fella I met a while back said he thought Elvis might have been
responsible for the birth of the
teenager. Ya think there's anything to that? Like before Elvis teens had
little credibility in the world of music. I never thought of it much. He
also thought the Beatles helped with this cause.

Today seems a very different music picture.

It's hard for me to know for sure I was only a teenager once.

I'd still be one to reach my hand up from the grave and wipe away the "King"
sign from my headstone if I were him. I have a hard time with that concept.
But maybe being recognised as the best is actually a goal for some. I rather
like being a part of a whole myself.

I got a sneak peek at a Rolling Stones Special Edition this last
week....it's an Oct 31 issue. I thought of Tracy and Sue as I read it.
They both have very beautiful voices and deserve their share of the music
world. It's done for the ladies of Rock and Roll. It was interesting some
of the ladies give advise to other ladies that are out there trying to make
it into the music world. Some just tell their stories and a few Veterans
tell what it's like for them now. One of them I don't know who now talked
about goals...like being the best....pretty big goal. They talked about
lots of other stuff too. It's an interesting read if you're interested in
the Ladies of Rock and Roll.

The lady veteran interviews were interesting to me. Seem Grace Slick is an
artist now. I thought of John when I read that wonder if he's seen any of
her paintings? From the sounds of it even being a painter has it's costs.
:(

There were a few other tidbits I found interesting.... Ya know that Bruce
Springseen guy? There was a little quip about Bruce in there too. My
friend TK saw him in concert and has his newest CD. He likes it ...he
didn't find it over done like some of the reviews I've read......and said
the show was really good. He told me about Bruce singing with his wife and
how cool it was when they'd throw vocals back and forth with one another.

Seems there's a lady out there by the name of Melissa Ethridge that admires
him down to the "what would Bruce do?" I kinda wonder if she doesn't throw
a few songs his way ...if ya know what I mean.

I also found a couple OT Obituaries I found interesting. Mickey Newbury and
Tim Rose both died last month. They were both in their 60's. Mickey was
credited with writing "Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition
Was In". Willie Nelson did a cover of this song on his "Crossing The Great
Divide" Album. Nice Tribute....

Tim Rose...well RS gives him credit for a couple..."Hey Joe" and "Morning
Dew" seems the RS may have it wrong when it comes to "Hey Joe" but "Morning
Dew" sure does look like his. I first heard this one on the Long Lohn
Baldrey CD that TK made for me. I last heard it on Robert Plant's new
release of "Dreamland". It seems Bobby's done
covers of more than one rocker that's crossed the great divide and a couple
old rockers that are still hanging in. Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot. He
does a straight up cover of Bob's "One More Cup of Coffee "and a rewrite of
Gordon's "Last Time I Saw Her"

Robert Plant and Gordon Lightfoot...what a strange combination.

I'd say Bobby did a good job on the re-write though. And gosh I wonder if
there's been any new news on Gordon. I hope he's made it out of ICU......
what a slow recovery.

Seems rock's made it thru teenagers, and ladies and now the big whoopla in
the States is still an Elvis song.."Jail House Rock".

Sometimes I wonder if all the whoopla doesn't take something away from the
essence of music?

Birth of the teenager? hmmm...I suppose he may have had
a hand in bringing out the rebellion in teenagers that hadn't
been seen before (or at least not as dramatically as earlier).

>Today seems a very different music picture.

Yes, it seems so.

>It's hard for me to know for sure I was only a teenager once.

I think today's youth probably have a harder time than I did.
Much of the time certain world events never seem to get a
proper explanation. I wonder what young people felt inside
of themselves when they saw the terrible images of 9-11 on
the television? Likely they felt some of the same things that
I felt, but how do I know the young feel something else too?

The way advertisers go after the kid's money is something!
I think we've become a society in which we are constantly
being told that all the things that we currently possess won't
ever be good enough to be satisfied with; or the advertisers
want us to always get something better (as if we'll never be
good enough for the people around us unless we play some
kind of endless cycle or game of "catch up" with regards to
certain material goods available in the marketplace).
Heck, if you need to be on a diet and take exercise classes,
why is it so important to buy some expensive clothing outfit?
Why is it, there always seems to be some person in one of
those exercise classes who is lean and fit, and doesn't really
need to be there in the first place? Do the gyms hire them? :)
Do I really need to have that ultra concentrated Ivory Liquid
to do my dishes, won't the plain weaker soap do the job?

Anyway, enough of the rant! That's not the real reason that
I came barging in here in the first place. Let's see...

>I'd still be one to reach my hand up from the grave and wipe away the "King"
>sign from my headstone if I were him. I have a hard time with that concept.

Interesting thought Steph! I guess some people like to have
some sort of distinguishing feature to set themselves apart. I
am reminded of how some people become knighted by the
queen, and get the fancy 'Sir' title to tack on to the front of a
name. Some think being knighted as rather elitist.
btw, if men become known as 'Sir' Whoever...what happens
with the women? Does the queen have a similar ceremony?

Anyway (and yes once again), I'll point out that's not the real
reason why I've journeyed such a vast distance to be here...

Thanks for pointing that out. I may have to browse through it
when I'm standing in the checkout line. Rolling Stone is one
mag I don't often buy anymore.

Now, I have reached my distination! If I hadn't heard just the
tailend of a news clip on TV the other day about Joni Mitchell
I don't know if I would have paid much attention to what you
pointed out about this particular issue of Rolling Stone.

Does Joni say something in that issue which states something
to the effect that she's ashamed of the recording industry? All
I caught on the news clip was the news announcer saying so.
Is Joni's interview in that issue? Would you know what it was
that's made her so ashamed with the recording industry? I'm a
little curious that's all, and I'm hoping to save a few bucks. ;)
But, if need be, I'll go buy a copy of Rolling Stone if I have to.

Okay...that's about all that I made my way here for, but since I
came all this way I may as well have a look at what else there
is in this post...

>The lady veteran interviews were interesting to me. Seem Grace Slick is an

I haven't heard much from her in quite a while. I guess in her
case being a painter does have it's cost. I think it way depend
on whether she was painting on canvas or painting the town.
I hear that Grace used to do quite a bit of the latter years ago.
I still like her Dreams album, the title cut is fantastic. I love her
voice!

Naw, I guess I can't say that I ever really knew the man!

Who is Bruce's wife, is she a singer (recording artist) too?

>Seems there's a lady out there by the name of Melissa Ethridge that admires

Well...no, not really...but I'll be sure to listen more carefully in
the future. ;)

That's interesting! Strange, I thought Rose was already dead.
What else did Newbury write? There's another one I liked too.

>Tim Rose...well RS gives him credit for a couple..."Hey Joe" and "Morning

Don't most people say Rose wrote Hey Joe? I know there's
been some debate though. Who else was said to have written
the tune, any ideas? Surely not Hendrix. Rose had recorded
Morning Dew on his debut album I think, but I've never heard
it.

>Robert Plant and Gordon Lightfoot...what a strange combination.

Plant does a Lightfoot tune? Gee...I don't know about that one.
I guess I'll have to hear those songs. I have Plant's voice in my
mind but I don't hear those GL tune's coming through.

>I'd say Bobby did a good job on the re-write though. And gosh I wonder if

hmmm...I'm not sure what's going on there. From all that I have
read I'm of the understanding Gord is slowly making progress.

>Seems rock's made it thru teenagers, and ladies and now the big whoopla in

Why is that tune doing so well? Is it on the charts again or are a
lot of Elvis fans still celebrating that recent anniversary?

Why not Heartbreak Hotel? I like the guitar on that one!

You may be right about that. :)

I don't know what she had to say about the Recording Industry. I didn't
read that far. I did read some of her interview though. She was insulted
when someone said she was one of the best female musicians out there. She
didn't think the word female needed to be used...more like she should be
seen as an equal was the gist I got out of it. It was a pretty long
interview...maybe it's available online if you're really interested or you
could be like one of the guys I see in the grocery store...wait at the

She said she took up painting to feel better after her lover left her. She
paints wildlife...as in animals...sheesh Russ, not the paint the town kind
at least that's not the impression I got. She said out of a 15000 dollar
painting she gets a third. Is that a better deal than the recording
industry offers? I have no idea. Her life regrets??? maybe a little wild
life there. :)

I looked for her Dream album after you mentioned it a while back and never
found even a mention of it anywhere.

I don't know...TK just said it was awesome. He also gave me a hard time
about going to see Nicky he said I could have seen Mick Jagger for what it
cost to see Nicky. I doubt if Mick Jagger would have cared one iota if I'd
showed up at one of his concerts. I had a good time being where I was. I

many things i would love to share with my friends and my family.

okay...I'll give it a try sometime! The thing that bugs me about
the concentrated Ivory soap is I can't get rid of all those extra
suds. hmmm...good thing it's only (environmentally unfriendly?)
soap but, you know, sometimes Ivory just seems to continually
foam up no matter how much water you use against it...why if I
were to give my mind the license to wander, you'd almost think
those continually multiplying suds were some kind of new alien
life form...and they're taking over! }}shiver!{{ ;)

I don't know, maybe 'distinguishing' wasn't the right word that I
should have used. Many people want to recognized for a life's
work in some field of endeavour though.

What of Elvis though, was it his intention to become some kind
new recording sensation when he walked into Sun Studios one
day? Or did he just want to become another singer, maybe gain
some kind of attention (not realizing what was in store for him)?
I doubt that, in 1956, he (or some other male singer) had a clue
of the type of life and career he was in for, so it's unlikely Elvis
had it in his mind to someday earn the title King of Rock & Roll.

I wish! I don't know about the 'little woman' but, occasionally, I
do wish I didn't have to do the shopping all the time. Tis' true! ;)

hmmm...maybe it was a different interview in another magazine.
It sounds like Joni's using the same kind of analogy that's often
used in theatre, at one time a man was the actor and a woman
was the actress.

Speaking of Joni, whatever happened to her newsgroup? Is it
gone? Q don't see it as I scroll down the list. I must say it was
rather slow in there though. There weren't very a lot of posters
in there! It's sad if her newsgroup is gone though. hmmm...

Nope! It wasn't too long, it didn't wear me out or bore me, nor
did it do anything of the sort. Fear not...and have another cup
of tea Steph! I'm having coffee at the moment. <slurp!> I have
to have something in the morning when I wake up the kid (oh

I could be mistaken about this but I thought I heard a story about
Grace. She was interviewed by a Canadian journalist (some years
ago) in which she stated that both she and her daughter used to
do drugs together (and at some point later they both sought drug
treatment). But, so the story goes, she simply hadn't realized what
she said (that one particular comment) would also be included in
the interview as well, until it was too late for her to stop it. True,
you can't believe all the gossip that gets said about celebrities. ;)

>I looked for her Dream album after you mentioned it a while back and never

It came out in 1980 on RCA. I'm a bit surprised you haven't seen
Dreams mentioned. I guess it must be long deleted now. It wasn't
a bestseller I don't think, and I'm not sure if any of her solo music
ever did sell well.

I sure liked her voice though. Like the style of singing we hear on
the Jefferson Airplane classic White Rabbit, Grace delivered the
same type of dramatic expression (or presentation) to many of the
songs on Dreams (and the title track was an perfect example).

Ya know I've been a very mean Mom in my day. I used to wake my daughter
Dawn up in the middle of the night and ask her to wash dishes and she'd do
it. She wouldn't if I asked in the daytime but night ...no problem. She'd
wash away and then go back to bed. The next morning the dishes would be all
done and she wouldn't even remember that she's done them. She could talk
for hours on the phone in her sleep and never remember that either.

I'll remember what you said about Ivory...just in case I'm ever lookin' for

I think the big guy would have gone this time if he hadn't just gotten back
from Alaska. It takes a while to get up for long flights. He thought 5 hrs
was long.

There was a guy on our plane that wanted out really bad... he got so tired
of waiting to land that he tried to deplane thru an emergency door. It's
pretty tough for me to sit still in a small place for a long time but it was
worth it. I hear if you're gonna make the trip Sunday flights are the least
crowded.

Next year Tantalus will be releasing the 2nd disc of the 2 Cd set. Jason
told me that's it's already been done. Nicky's a part of that one too.
Another launch? I don't know...I guess alot depends on how #1 goes. They
wanted to sell a few copies in the States. I hope they can.

Happy now?! :)

I'm very happy ...

"I flew with the birds...into a sea of unknown beauty."

My Goodness...what a beautiful sea.

Things like that just don't happen every day. I'm glad I've lived so long.

Alaska...that must be nice! It's a pretty rugged piece of country up
there but if you're into spectacular scenery I guess that would be a
good place to be. I guess much of the north is beautiful. I've seen
a few documentaries on the north and what gets me is that there's
a lot of national parks (both in Canada and the U.S.) that I haven't
ever heard of before, that are still mostly untamed wilderness. That
bad thing is I doubt if I'd ever be able to spell the names of most of
those parks. You would think there would still be a lot of gold to be
found in some of those areas but I guess it'll stay right there. ;)

I guess for some people five hours would be a long time to sit on a
plane. I've taken a few long bus trips and I was sure glad to get off
those buses once I finally arrived at my destination. In a way I can
almost understand what that unhappy passenger must have felt. It
wouldn't be me who'd try and exit a plane the way he tried though.

I hate it when the planes go in for a landing and, as they do, I get a
popping sensation in my ears and sometimes it's hard to hear things.
Landing in San Francisco one time was memorable...the plane had
to wait as other planes landed first so the plane dropped altitude as
it circled over the Bay area. As the plane dropped I felt the pressure
in my ears increase. I wanted to try to spot the Pyramid Building but
I couldn't do much of anything thanks to the pain in my ears. ouch! ;)

might help them to sell a few more CDs.

Russ,

Are you serious? I am just guessing on her last name and will probably
slaughter it without looking it up....but it is Patti Scalfia. She has been
the back-up singer with the E-Street band for ages...I think even when Bruce
married that Julianne. I think it is sort of a great example of finding your
"true love" right under your nose! The funniest thing I think of is looking
at "Little Steven" Van Zahndt and picturing him on "The Sopranos".

"The Actor" has always been a favorite of mine. There were three songs which
definitely gave me chills at both shows....NIWS, The Actor and IKYOTS.

Oh yes...right, right! yeah, I kind of remember Patti now. I

Each are good tunes. When IKYOTS first came out on the
radio I didn't really fond of the song...I didn't hate it though.
I don't mind the song so much these days, especially after
I heard the live version on HOF.

I'm thinkin' maybe so Kim. And I'm sure glad somebody's trying to answer
some of the qustions that got asked...I sure did a lot of snipping...not to
be snippy I just don't know the answers to some of his questions.

I picked up an interesting Springsteen DVD this weekend. And that "red
headed lady" she's on the back. Figured it wouldn't hurt me to check it
out. The one I got seems to be an E Street Band reunion show.

It's interesting, they talk about what it feels like to come back together
to play after being apart for so long. And what the being apart was like for
some of them. There's a lot of studio footage in this one. They tell about
what it's really like to make a Cd. clear down to stuff like official press
releases . Somehow I pictured the process different than that and maybe it
is for different bands. I haven't finished it yet...kinda a savoring this
one. I'm glad I found it. I'm enjoying.

I'm still kind of curious about the Joni questions.

I searched Rolling Stone on the net this weekend and didn't find the most
recent article. I searched there for the Moodies while I was at it.
Graeme's right when he said they sure don't get much press there. It was
kind of interesting to read what they did say though. Mostly stuff about
if you liked blah blah's music you might also like like Moody Blues....guess
there is some predictabily in listening choices....even as far as Kitaro.

I bet that DVD is great. I have the CD of the new release. (It's one of
those that Steven talked me into going half and half on!) It was hard to
believe that so many years had passed since the whole band was together. I
am a big fan of the early BS and the E-Street Band stuff. I actually bought
a CD of the old CD..."The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle". I
just love that one.
