Hi Monkee fans. I recently came into posession of a 16mm print of the
unaired pilot to the Monkees television series that was used as the
sales film. According to the story I was told, this was purchased
from the estate of an Ex-NBC executive who recently passed away. I
have not done a scene by scene comparrison between this print and the
Bobby Hart print used for the Rhino box set but this version does not
have the screen tests on it and does have Boyce and Hart dubbing the
vocals. I read in some old posts that the Bobby Hart print was edited
in some way from the version used as the original sales film for the
series. Does anyone out there know how? I would like to know what to
look for in this when determining which version this print is. At the
very least this is the discovery of a SECOND slightly different
version of the one Bobby Hart has which was thought to be the only
print left in existance. Any help or info on this great find would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mainly, look for a whole lot more of the manager character. In the pilot
that was aired, the manager only appeared briefly at the beginning, saying
"Wool Hat, take the boys to the country club, you're auditioning for a Mr
Russell". The pilot that was originally offered to the test audience had a
lot more of this character, as a "father figure" for the band.

Let us know what else you find out!

Well, during the first season, there were pieces of the pilot
shown.

*The guys wearing trench coats burst into the Rudy's
record store with guitar cases"
("The Spy That Came In From The Cool")
*Before Peter joins the guys to invade the record
store, he comes out of the surf wearing a wet suit.
As he unzips it, one can see a seersucker jacket with
tie underneath.
(Opening Credits)

I'm guessing with this crazy stuff that proceeds the
"Now on to our story" card, the scene in
the record store where the guys help a dad
find a record for his teenage daughter was taped
-"Sir, may I recommend this record by The Monkees.
I guarantee a migraine."

The interview with Lionel B. Turner was in the script,
sometime after Vanessa flunked her history final. Rudy
and Mr. Russell talk about the bad influence the boys
are to Vanessa before both are in the vicinity of
the interview.

It can't be precisely said what was filmed, but
the manager scenes were supposedly more than
the Bobby Hart version, and the crazy bits with
the guys before they enter the record store look
like they have been filmed.

Let us know what kind of stuff your tape has!
