I've done some internet research and the like, heard an album or two, but I
want to know more about Karn and Barbieri, et al. Anyone have some stories
and stuff that might be interesting, or some actual CDs to pass off? I have
Exorcising Ghosts and Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

I am a big Japan, David Sylvian freak. Even saw Sylvian on a solo tour about
10 years ago. Ghosts is juts a best of, Tin Drum is their masterpiece.
Polaroid's came before Tin Drum.
Steve Jansen and Sylvian are brothers.

Karn's solo cds are ok, he did a cd with David Torn and Bozzio called
Polytown.
Oil on Canvas is live Japan, this is really good.
Mick Karn solo, dreams of reason produce monsters, bestial cluster, Dali's
Car with Peter Murphy.

I enjoyed both Bestial Cluster and Tooth Mother. Has he done anything
more? Polytown...I just couldn't get into it.

Rain Tree Crow was a Japan reunion of sorts. All 4 original members but
under a different name.
There is a cd with Karn, Barbieri and Jansen.

what's kewl is listen to the earlier Japan cds and see how the band evolved
from a sudo punk type band to the band they ended up being, Duran Duran
stole so much of their look from Japan.

I heard that somewhere. But neither of those names are their surnames--
neat.

I've actually been into Sylvian for some time. But its not easy to find
Japan stuff just kicking around and I'm not really a hunter gatherer type
when it comes to music.

What's the connection to or influence on Duran Duran?

Everyone plays great on that CD, but its sort of sleepy. Kind of a musical
wankathon. It has its moments.

Lou's Records has Japan/Sylvian/Karn stuff. I have a live video from the Oil
on Canvas tour which is killer.

Japan and in particular Mick Karn ,, stunning stuff.
I still love it. My mini-disk player feeds me lots of there stuff.
No stories really but they rocked indeed.

I can't believe that I saw Japan supporting Blue Oyster Cult in the
seventies. It seems such an odd coupling that I wonder if I dreamt it (I
didn't). It was back when Japan were more guitar-based and rather
glam-rock. They didn't go down at all well with the unwashed BOC crowd.

I haven't kept up with Karn and Barbieri but Sylvian's done some
solo/non-Japan stuff I like (Dead Bees On A Cake) and Damage with Fripp.

I have seen Sylvian live but not Japan, they had already called it quits
from touring when I found them. That was in 84.
There are few really good books out about the guys and how the band formed.
All self taught musicians, Karn first played bassoon. Then started on bass
and not just bass but decided to play fretless. Same with the other 3 cats,
they just started banging away until it sounded good. Karn is also a very
good artist, many sculptures. he has had a few showings of his work.

I have a good chunk of DS, and I love DBOAC. Very nice recording. Pleasing
music.
