OT: Barenaked Ladies

were that good.
I downloaded their new best of CD last week, and am giving it a listen
tonight. I've been alternately cracking up and appreciating the depth of
their lyrics. I'm genuinely surprised...I hadn't really expected it to
be this good.
Is there anyone else here who's into them? Which album would you start
on? What I'd REALLY like to have is a good-quality copy of their
rendition of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" that they did with Sarah
McLachlan.

I'm not a huge fan, but I do enjoy them and I like pretty much everything up
to and including Stunt. I have no idea about the stuff since then (what's it
called, Maroon?) since I haven't heard it. I'd say get Gordon first, that's
still my favorite.
I hear they're a hell of a lot of fun live. I'd like to see them someday.

I think they're decent. Like Dougie, I'm not a huge fan, but I respect
them. They Might Be Giants fans tend to like them a lot. In fact, I
would probably describe them as "TMBG after meeting with a marketing
consultant."

As usual, Dougie's right, and so is Ben. They're a blast to see live - they
work a lot of ad lib stuff into their shows, and they do a lot of local
references. I've only seen them live once, on the Stunt holiday tour, and
it was too late. Too many trend-mongers in the crowd who only knew One
Week.
Gordon is the hands-down winner for the album to start with. It's their
strongest album, IMO. After that, I'd recommend Rock Spectacle, a live
disc. It has some examples of the between song chatter, but not much.
There's a song on that disc called Break Your Heart that is really powerful
live. Stunt is pretty good, but I don't think Maroon is all that great.
Same for Born On A Pirate Ship.

I had a wry smile at the title, which I believe refers to the track on
"Gordon" about a box set. Personally, I like some of their stuff, but I
wouldn't go out of my way to rescue it if I saw it drowning in a lake.
