Hey,Podie, did you send Buckwheat his art supplies? Another thing he might
really like are watercolour drawing pencils.I bought some today as I
misplaced my old ones in a move & they're great. You draw with them like
regular artists' coloured pencils,or you can use a damp. brush on what
you've drawn to create effects that look like watercolour.A pack of these,a
no.5 paintbrush and an A5/A6 water colour pad & he's in business.I love
mine.
I don't know what they cost in the States, but just a word about prices.Art
supply prices are often highway robbery, but often there are cheaper, good
quality brands of things if you know your stuff..(Some cheap brands, like
Maries Oil Colours are absolute crap:= & impossible to use well: avoid like
the plague)At the artist's store I went to, Derwent W/C pencils were $36 a
pop.The Faber-Castells are just as good IMO,and are usually $22. but were
marked down today to $10. I'd ask other customers for reccomendations on
most bang for buck-they're often artists, and need to stretch a dollar far
without ending up with crappy tools.Don't let the salesperson talk you into
the most expensive brand: they're paid to bilk you.An artist may know of a
perfectly terrific product at half the price.
Also, did you tell him about the book idea?(Drawings from soldiers to raise
funds for Gulf War Syndrome sufferers)? I'd love to see his work.
Pls keep us posted as to how he's going, and best wishes that he's safe and
well
(and his poor worried mum of course)
cheers

Podkayne Fries is a character in sci fiction books by Robert Heinlein.

Really? Which one(s)?

Giselle (I've read a few of his but he makes me depressed)

I think it was a Mars series. Podkayne of Mars? I don't remember.
Podkayne (our Podkayne) explained it once when we were talking about
science fiction series books.

I've picked up a couple of things at the art supply store that just
opened downtown. I got some watercolors, colored pencils and
charcoals, and I'm going to pick up some sketchpads this weekend.

I like your idea about the watercolor pencils- thanks! I'll have to
look for those.

The new art supply store had a sale going on, and I picked up Farber
pencils for 50 cents each, a tin of watercolors for $2 and a small box
of charcoals for $3. This is about what I would pay for Crayola kids'
art supplies.

I mentioned that in an email I sent recently, so we'll see what he
thinks. I think it's a great idea!

His only complaints have been the type that come from all soldiers -
the food stinks, the officers are stupid and worst of all - there's no
beer! His unit is busily building all kinds of things, so they're not
in dangerous situations (a fact that I repeatedly thank God for).

His tentative return date is next Valetine's Day. The date might vary
by a couple of weeks, but having a date makes the time seem shorter.

The kind words from everyone really mean a great deal to my family and
I. I've saved them all so that I can show his kids when they're
older. Many thanks to all of you!

Really? I've always loved his books, even the smutty one he wrote
after having a stroke.

PODKAYNE OF MARS was the name of the book. It was the first SF book I
ever read, and it made a big impression on me when I was a little
girl. It's a little dated, but I still enjoy reading it.

Just for the Loon - Poddy is of mixed ethnic heritage. She's 5'2"
with eyes of blue (which I'm not) but she has Maori ancestors. Her
Uncle Tom is as black as night. Heinlein goes into some detail as to
how this is possible, and unlike the Wackaloons, he has verifiable
scientific data to back up his assertions.

Wackaloons don't grok.
