No, the question is, Will Michael take Pepsi back?
I'm sure he'll have corporate sponsorship, but does he really want to be the
spokesperson for a product?
Maybe Kirby.
Nat
I dont think MJ was a good investment for companies even b4 the molestation
scandal. Sure in the early 80's his aasociation with pepsi was fun did them
good but the silly "Im bad and Pepsi good" commercials from the BAD era were
embarrising and might actually sway people away from pepsi and over to coke
just so they wouldnt feel lame. The L.A. gear shoes were some kind of a bad
joke. Im not sure if the ads he does overseas influences anyone but currently
in the U.S. his name is not very bankable.

No more cheezy commercials. No more changing of lyric to sing about
caffeinated, sugar laden crap. No more embarrassing commercials. No
more E-bloody-sonic. No more compromising of integrity and artistry
for a fat cheque. What a bloody joke. God how I cringe.
Just the fricken music. Actually, I want a concert sponsored by
untrademarked clean drinking water, uncontaminated food and healthy
minds. That would be a kick to see.

Me too. So why the need for fricken Pepsi?

At this stage of his career Michael does not need Corporate Sponsors, unlike
Brittney and Nsync who need all the help they can get. Anyone else agree?

I think that's a fallacy. I don't think that either the sponsor ship or the
advertisements relate in anyway to the music. If he sings and dances a
little in the commercial, that still doesn't really affect the album as far
as anyone should be concerned.
On the other hand, a celebrity's endorsement is a fallacy for a product,
(see Michael Jordan's Ball Park Hot Dogs) and shouldn't be regarded as truth
or sincerity, that is unless that it's Wayne Gretzke endorsing Tylenol,
because he has experience in the field of pain, right? I don't know if Mike
was into Pepsi when he was younger, but now that would be fallacious for him
to endorse. But Wayne endorsing Kellogg's Frosted Flakes is wrong, that is
unless he is a Martyr for doc Kellogg ;)

Like all the teen videos out there now too. It's frightening. I think the
same director and choreographer take all these teen groups and make the same
video with each different group. Same line-dance moves, same close-up look
at the camera from one of the girls.....it's pathetic. That's the only
thing I don't care for in nsync's videos; they have some of that too, but at
least they have cool stuff, like shrinking in the department store,
mini-stories, changing clothes, transportation, etc.
Nat

I'm not crazy about the stereotypes of the people watching the video; the
men & dog who can't look away, the woman who wants to be like her. Yuck.

Yes! You've said that already. Why is that a turn-off? I remember the
only thing that people buzzed about back then is the Bad video. Mom's were
gasping at the crotch-grab. Not the Pepsi commercials.
Nat
Yeah so orgional.. Did'nt you see that commercial years back where they played
Van Halen's "You really Got Me" where G.I. Joe Picked up Barbie and they drove
away? Thats what that video ripped off. N'SYNC SUCKS DONKEY BALLS... wanna
know why? Not because they cant sing or dance because they can technically.
But rather the way they sing and dance. Very deliberate and contrived. The
cut & paste approach that is prevalent in there song, dance and dress is just
embarrising even by New Kids on the Block standards. Its like a grandmothers
quilt of pop culture "or should I say Frankenstien". Just bits and peices
stitched together strategically so as to pass as clever but is instead hollow
and uninspiring. Theyre new song POP attempts to adress theyre so called
"POP" label but this too is routine and simply recycles countless cliches.
They dont even deserve the title of pop... NSYNC does'nt create pop culture
they IMITATE it.

I've got to agree with you here. I does look to deliberate and
Frankensteinish. I've always hated the look of line dancing. I can't stand
when everyone's doing the same dance. It's annoying. The only time it's
not bothered me is when there is a focal point, like in the old shows where
there's one female singer and a bunch of back-up dancers, or in Dangerous,
where Michael is the focal point and he has a bunch of back-up dancers.
Probably because the focal point keeps me from watching the others too much.
I loved that GI Joe/Barbie commercial. That was cool. But nsync's Barbie
commercial reminded me more of Small Soldiers.

were embarrassed to watch a guy proclaim to be "Bad" and then talk about how

"although the crotch grabbing and ever increasing androgeny made it pretty
difficult to take seriously". The surrendering of the message behind Bad and
giving it over to a carbonated, sugar-packed, caffeine-laced beverage was not
just tacky but it presented MJ as a corporate pawn who was all too willing to
allow his music and message be manipulated for the right price. Add to this
that it was widely reported that MJ doesnt even drink Pepsi and you see why it
was not a move that gave MJ any "street cred" or all around image boost he may
have hoped to gain.

You're really taking this a little too hard.
By the way, why would you think moms aren't part of the music fan public?
I'm a mom and I certainly do count when it comes to buying music. Not only
for myself, but for what my kids will buy when they are old enough to buy
their own music. I think we have a lot more influence than you think.
Nat

>By the way, why would you think moms aren't part of the music fan public?
I hear what your sayin but lets face it. Historically it's been the young "or
young at heart" that have broken the pre-determined rules set by theyre elders
in all facets of our culture. So worrying about what Mom thinks of
crotch-grabbing is sort of a non-issue when your trying to push the boundries
of music or anything. Of course crotch-grabbing is pretty tame compared to the
antics seen in a Punk Rock or Yani concert. The kids expect theyre parents not
to "get it". ya dig?

My sentiments, exactly.
> That is indeed what he said.>
OH SNAP! He said Pepsi was "Cool" and not "Good"? Holy Zamoli.. That throws
everything I said before out the window. Honestly, thats makes it even worse
as theyre could be nothin so jaw-droppingly un-cool than singing about how
you'll be hip if you drink this crap. Our culture pretty much knows that Pepsi
is a lame version of Coke & the only way you can even drink it is if you put
lots of ice in it to water it down. The shit is so syrupy I could pour it on
my friggin flap-jacks!
Reminds me of a billboard I used to laugh at every morning, years ago,
when I was commuting to a job south of Seattle. In big, grungy
letters it said "Don't Wade in the Mainstream." It was an ad for
Converse sneakers--to be purchased at Mervyn's. Irony. Gotta love
it...
Read young'n! I said...
>video for Bad was of a serious
>tone
>> "although the crotch grabbing and ever increasing androgeny made it pretty
>> difficult to take seriously".
It sez dat because at the the time of Bad's release people were confused by
MJ's new Janet-like look, which was more androgenous than his previous look,
which made people compare the two "which MJ joked about at an award ceremony".
Of course The look he was sporting back in Bad looks almost rugged compared to
the JC Penny Store-manequin look he's has presently. But I was just sayin the
combination of the crotch-grabbing and the new look threw people off and not
that the grabbing influenced the look. Although I cant confirm this...
And Swanson T.V. Dinners...
Sure, she's a cute girl, but because she's neither a good singer or
dancer she's being sold on sex alone. Since she's not much older than
my daughter, I find that particularly disturbing. I want to make her

My girlfriend (who is 34) and I saw the commercial the first time it

a member of The Sisterhood offensive. "Gawd," she remarked, "Could
Pepsi do a better job of alienating the women-over-25 demographic?"

Yup. Of course I will still buy my Diet Dr. Pepper when it's on sale for

Does Britney really make people buy Pepsi products for $7.00 a case? Does

Exactley... ever been to a Zanfir concert? Scary stuff.
Sweetie Pie...I didnt say that I was being ignorant because I was young. On
the contrary, I was trying to find a polite way to say that because your older
you probably have lost much of the fire and concern for issues such as selling
out or lame commercial endorsements as they seem like afterthoughts and you
dont want to "rock the boat" . Historically it has been the young who will be
more critical and not as willing to look the other way when they see monumental
lameness. Of course it was the significantly older Neil Young who did the
award winning song and video "This Notes For You" which satarized and
underscored the MJ/Pespi collaberation for what it was. So Its not so much a
young/old issue as it is a matter of a willingness to see clearly and be
critical.
Ok but he did go back for Bad and his face was shown for a good amount of time.
So whats the deal? After reading this I am even l more disturbed by the Bad
Pepsi commercials since MJ touted it as "Cool" and did those disturbing
drinking motions like he was downing a six-pack of that crap. Looks like MJ
sold out big time. Almost makes the whole hair catching on fire incident a sort
of poetic Justice. THIS NOTES FOR YOU!

As you grow up, you will gain more perspective, and see this for what it is:
really not too important in the scheme of things. I really take lameness
for granted now, and sure, I look the other way. To me it seems pretty lame
to: a) spend millions and millions on a Superbowl commercial that really
doesn't make your product look any better than anyone else's, or b) be a
consumer who goes out and spends more money on Nyquil because the guy looks
like he'll give a better presentation in the morning than the girl who
didn't take Nyquil when there are generic brands on the market for half as
much with the same ingredients.
Seeing clearly and finding other things in life as more important are two
different things. I do know MY children are too smart to fall for silly
advertising, and they are what my major concern in life is now. Not what
people do in advertising. Actually, even when I was 18 I had better things
to do with my time.
If you want to be critical, be critical of what the insurance and drug
companies do to the people and how the government could care less because
they get pocket money from them.
Nat
Pumpkin... I'm not sure how old you think I am but I'm in my late 20's so Its
not likely that my look on things will change too drastically. As for the
issue not being too important it basicaly boils down to asthetics and what your
willing to tolerate. I know I'm not the only who thinks the Pepsi campaign was
pointless explotation and an embarrasment. You probably thought it was cute
and something neat for your kids. Different Strokes...
> Pumpkin... I'm not sure how old you think I am but I'm in my late 20's so Its

Ok, so it's not your age; maybe it's *whispers* something else. That should
be obvious because I know people younger than you who have perspective.

Good grief, kids were the furthest thing from my mind then. My point is,
who cares? Some commercials ARE cute and some ARE funny. It doesn't mean
someone's going to buy that brand because of the commercial.
Go get a snack when commercials come on. There are more important things to
worry about. Worry about hate groups, germicide, food preparation
cleanliness, rats in fast foods, you know, things that actually might affect
you.
Nat
Of course that makes sense technically but you could say dont comment on
entertainment a'tall because its not a matter of life & death. By that
rationale NOTHING in this group is worth commenting on because there are bigger
issues. Why are you spending time reading this newsgroup and anticipating a
new album? You could be worrying about pressing issues like the Ozone layer
and Joan Rivers face.

Because I am able to do a multitude of things very very quickly so I have
that luxury. You'd be amazed at the things I do in a day:
I milk the cows in the morning. I work for an auction house and do their
auction listings, real estate listings, appraisals, letters and receivables.
I try to run 50 online auctions for myself each week and I have to go to
estate sales, auctions and garage sales to get the stuff. I go to all the
school functions, take the kids to and from summer school, drama class and
swimming lessons, do all the shopping, cleaning, 1-3 loads of laundry a day,
the cooking, caring for and playing with the kids, milk at night if my
husband is still working in the tractor, help move heifers, feed youngstock
if my husband's busy, manage the business accounts, employees (not to
mention making them Kool-aid & sandwiches), and mow the lawn for an hour a
day.
I was just brought up to be busy. I work well under pressure. It only took
30 seconds to get this email out. I have OE run my newsgroup messages right
through as email so when I get business email, I just read and respond to
these too. It's nothing, really.
So, you see, I can worry about important things AND have a good time at the
same time. By the way, the "ozone" layer scare is probably a hoax to get
your mind of the corrupt government and what's with Joan Rivers' face?
Nat
Well theres your problem. You need to slow down a bit to see things in
perspective. Everything would seem benine if you raced past it at full speed.
Haste makes waste
> Well theres your problem. You need to slow down a bit to see things in

> Haste makes waste
No way. The best times for thinking are mowing the lawn and milking cows.
They're pretty much brain-resting jobs. If you slow down, your brain
actually goes into semi-snooze. Did you know that? I'll bet you did.
Oh I forgot one thing....I run a web site for the auction house/real estate
co.
Nat
Well some people I know keep busy 24-7 so they dont have to think about whats
really bothering them.

stationary, yet they keep flashing 4 second clips of people frolicking and

for asking my boss why I should get a raise, etc.

she know she shouldn't.
Nat
