I always thought that the bassist was called Nicky Wire.

I have just bought TIMTTMY and it mentions a Nick Jones.

Who is Nick Jones?

Does this newsgroup have a FAQ? How many times has this question been
asked recently?

Nicky Wire = Nick Jones. They're the same person. Wire is just a
nickname given to him when he was younger (because he's so tall and
thin).

There is a (particulary good) Manics FAQ easily available on the web to
anyone blessed with half a brain cell.

Unfortunately, this rules out most of the people asking stupid questions
in the first place.

Why doesn't whoever has taken over the FAQ from Garrett (whoever you may be)
post a plain text version of it here every month or so, like in other
newsgroups?

Well, I haven't "taken over the FAQ", but if I can obtain permission
from Garrett (whom I have written with in the past, so I expect he's
still lurking around the web), I would happily post the FAQ in the group
monthly.

I'll see what I can do...

I hope that wasn't a sly dig at me ;-)

After following a few dead links, I came across a version of the FAQ
at: http://www.tmtm.com/manics/faq.txt

If the FAQ, or at least a pointer to the FAQ, was posted here on a
regular basis, maybe that would help. Then again, maybe I have too
much faith in human nature.

You already have Garrett's permission, it seems. From the (outdated)
version I found:

Obviously it needs updating to take into account the new album.
Otherwise, well volunteered!

Well, Mr Extremist, I did not see a FAQ in this group.

Perhaps you are one of the "elitist" Manics fans?

Let's not argue, here's the FAQ.
I'm thinking on updating it sometime soon myself. I'll let you know
if/when I do.

PART 1: HINTS AND TIPS FOR THE MAILING LIST
===========================================

<snipped Mailing List info, considering it's damn near impossible to

"Maybe this world is another planet's hell."

PART 2: TRIVIA
==============

2.1. WHERE IS RICHEY?
2.2. USELESS MSP TRIVIA
2.3. BAND MEMBER PROFILES

--------------------------------------------------------

SECTION 2.1. WHERE IS RICHEY
============================

We don't know. All that can be said really is that we hope he is happy,
wherever he is, since being in the band led him to be so unhappy that he
considered chopping off his fingers, and ended up running from it.

There's are many theories either way - hope for his survival is based
on:
i) the fact that he systematically withdrew cash before he disappeared
ii) the fact that after a pause, the band are continuing to record (they
had said 'if it ever comes to the point where Richey isn't coming
back,
we won't continue'), and to use quotes on the sleeves - however,
they
also promised to split up after one album.
iii) the fact that some of his heroes and role models - Salinger in
particular - disappeared without trace, only to reappear years
later
iv) also, although he went missing on the 1st of Febuary, his car wasn't
discovered until the 14th, with a flat battery. This leads some to
believe (along with the money he took out) that he had some sort of
plan in mind.

On the other hand:
i) Press reports indicate he left his Prozac and passport behind
ii) His car was found near the Severn bridge, a notorious suicide spot,
from which bodies have just disappeared.

Either way, it would be hard to over-estimate the trauma that the
disappearance of one of their closest friends would have on the band,
even without the attendant problem of whether to stop performing.

SECTION 2.2. TRIVIA
================

a) The band gained their name when James was busking. A passing old man
apparently remarked 'there's a manic street preacher' (crazy but
true!)

b) Nicky Wire played football for Wales schoolboys. He is a fanatical
Spurs fan, and James supports Nottingham Forest. Nicky is also a fan
of
boxing and the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team.

c) Sean is James' cousin.

d) James was real name is in fact 'James Dean' - his father actually
wanted
to call him 'Clint Eastwood', but his mother's good sense prevailed.

e) James has produced various songs for Northern Uproar, together with
Dave
Eringa, one-time Manics producer. He has also contributed vocals for
as
808 State track called "Lopez", and is currently writing some songs
with
Kylie Minosue. Nicky has collaberated with Ian Broudie on the
Lightning
Seeds track "Waiting for Today to Happen".

f) James said in an interview on MTV Europe's Alternative Nation that he
is
ashamed of the music he wrote to "Patrick Bateman", the B-side of "La
Tristessa Duera"
"It's far too metal. The lyrics are great, but the music? Naaah"

g) Sean was Welsh national junior trumpet champion.

SECTION 3.2. PEOPLE REFERRED TO IN THE SONGS
============================================

"Everything we discovered, from "Betty Blue" to Malcolm Lowry, was no
big deal. Everything came fast to us. We are a microcosm. We get
bored so easily that we put into three years everything that took
the Rolling Stones twenty. It's just the way we are; we are modern
people."
Nicky Wire, Jan
'94

a) BEVERLY ALLITT - Nottinghamshire nurse, suffered from Munchausens
Syndrome (a desire to kill or injure to get attention), killed
several
babies and young infants in her care.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

b) IDI AMIN - Ugandan dictator, killed and ate many of his political
opponents. Lives in exile in the south of France
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

c) EMMA BALFOUR - model
("4st 7lbs" from the album "The Holy Bible")

d) PATRICK BATEMAN - protaganist in Brett Easton Ellis's novel "American
Psycho"
("Patrick Bateman". B-side to "La Tristessa Duera")

e) TRAVIS BICKLE - Anti-hero in the Martin Scorsese film "Taxi Driver".
Played by Robert DeNiro.
("Patrick Bateman". B-side to "La Tristessa Duerra")

f) BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID - 1969 film based on the exploits
of
the historical characters. The song "Sepia" may have been named
because
of the final shot in the film, where the two protaganists are due to
be
gunned down by the Bolivian army, fades to sepia tones and stops.
The Manics also cover "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" which
appeared
in the film.
("Sepia". B-Side to "Kevin Carter")

g) BLANCHE - may well be Eugene Terre Blanche. Figurehead of right-wing
Afrikaner Nationalism in South Africa. Currently residing in the
'where
are they now?' file, following a poor showing in the South African
elections.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

h) VIRGINIA BOTTOMLEY - Tory Politician. Used to be Minister For Health.
Universally hated due to the hospital closures she instigated.
("Us Against You" B-side to "Roses In The Hospital")

i) KEVIN CARTER - war photographer, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his
photograph of a dying Rwandan child. The irony of fame coming from
such a
source drove him to suicide.
("Kevin Carter". From the album "Everything Must Go")

j) WINSTON CHURCHILL - Churchill was Home Secretary/Defence Secretary
when there were disturbances in the Rhondda Valleys (Tonypandy
actually) in the early part of the century. He ordered the troops in
who
did a great deal of damage to people and property. He was not too
popular
at the time in the south wales valleys. Nicky Wire was also quoted as
saying: "The lines: 'Churchill no different/Wished the workers bled
to a
machine' are about how Britain always thinks that it has a superior
attitude. But as soon as the war (WW2) was over, the attitude was:
'Let's
get back to normal and exploit as many people as we can again. Keep
the
proles happy, tie them to their machines, and then send them out to
war
again to be killed when we need to'."
("The Intense Humming Of Evil" from the album "The Holy Bible")

k) ADAM CLAYTON and NAOMI CAMPBELL - U2 bassplayer and supermodel
("Dead Passive". B-side to "Design For Life")

l) DICE CLAY - Alter ego of comedian Andrew Clay. renowned for putting
alot of
peoples backs up due to his near the knuckle brand of humour. Claimed
to
be ironic, but there were a hell of a lot of Americans taking him
seriously.
Once described his perfect woman as someone with "Two tits, a ho--,
and a
heartbeat.".
("Patrick Bateman". B-side to "La Tristessa Duerra")

m) SAM COLT - Invented the revolver just before the Civil War. An old
West
saying goes "God created man and Cornell Colt made them equal" which
was
altered in the 70s to say "God created men and women and Cornell Colt
made them equal".
("Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" From the
album "The Holy Bible")

n) JEFFERY DAHMER - American cannibal serial killer, responsible for the
deaths of 17 young men in Milwaukee. He was himself murdered by an
inmate of his maximum security prison.
("Archives Of Pain" From the album "The Holy Bible")

o) ELVIS - Elvis Presley, King of Rock N'Roll!
("Nostalgic Pushead" from the album "Gold Against The Soul")

p) LOUIS FARRAKHAN - American head of the Nation Of Islam. One of a
triumvirate of 60s civil rights leaders, but unlike King and Malcolm
X,
he has survived this long. Murky gossip suggests this may not be a
coincidence - X's daughter has been accused of trying to kill him,
and
revenge her father. All deeply sub judice of course. He remains a
controversial figure - his preaching of black power has certainly
verged
on the anti-white, anti-Semitic and sexist, and he has angered the US
Govt by visiting 'outlaw regimes' such as Libya and Iran. Led the
Million
Man March to Washington.
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible")

q) JEAN PAUL GAULTIER - Fashion Designer, and one time presenter of
"Eurotrash", a tabloid television program shown on Channel 4 (U.K.)
which
revels in the weird and seedy side of european life.
("Nostalgic Pushead" from the album "Gold Against The Soul")

r) TIPPER GORE - wife of US Vice President Al Gore, created the Parents
Music
Resource Center in the 80s to advocate stickering albums with
"obscene"
lyrics. Depending on your point of view, this is either dangerous
censorship, or vital to protect the minds of our children.
("Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" From the
album "The Holy Bible")

s) HUGH GRANT and ELIZABETH HURLEY - another troubled couple (what is it
about
supermodel marriages?). She's sticking with him, for now, mainly
because
she is only famous through him.
("Dead Passive". B-side to "Design For Life")

t) MYRA HINDLEY and IAN BRADY - the so-called 'Moors murderers'. They
tortured 5 or 6 young children to death, tape recorded their screams,
and
buried their bodies on moorland. They provide a test for the view
that
prison should provide rehabilitation, not punishment, since many feel
their crimes were so ghastly that they should never be released,
despite
Hindley's studying in prison, and claims to have repented.
("Archives Of Pain" From the album "The Holy Bible")

u) HITLER - Adolf Hitler. Austrian. Leader of the Third Reich. Started
WWII
and instigated the Holocaust.
("Of Walking Abortion" from the album "The Holy Bible")

v) HORTHY - Hungarian fascist leader
("Of Walking Abortion" from the album "The Holy Bible")

w) SADDAM HUSSEIN - Leader of Iraq. Invaded Kuwait and started the Gulf
War.
Suprisingly left in power after his defeat at the hands of the
coalition
forces. Recently won an election by grabbing 99.8% of the vote. Also
infamous for using chemical weapons against his own people in
Kurdistan.
("Dead Yankee Drawl" B-Side to "Little Baby Nothing" [CD1])

x) MICHAEL HUTCHENCE - Singer with INXS. Used to go out with HELENA
CHRISTENSEN. Michael has since run off with Paula Yates....For now.

years
ago. (see: MIKE TYSON)
("Dead Yankee Drawl" b-side to "Little Baby Nothing" CD1)

b1) RODNEY KING - Victim of a police beating in the L.A. Riots in 1991.
He was
eventually awarded $3.8 million in compensatory damages.
("Dead Yankee Drawl" B-side to "Little Baby Nothing" CD1)

c1) WILLEM De KOONING - abstract expressionist painter, who continued to
paint, despite suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
("Interiors (song for Willem de Kooning)" From the album "Everything
Must Go")

d1) JEAN MARIE Le PEN - Head of French National Front, proposing
repatriation of foreigners. Typically wins around 15% of the vote in
French elections.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

e1) PRIMO LEVI: author of the poem "Song of Those Who Died in Vain,"
which is
included on the GATS sleeve. He is famous for his autobiography
_Survival
in
Auschwitz_ (formerly _If This is a Man_), which documents his time
spent
in a German concentration camp, as well as other memoirs, poetry,
and
prize-winning novels.

f1) ROY LYNK - Head of the Nottingham-based Union of Democratic
Mineworkers. This was created during the 1984 miners strike, and led
the
return to work which prevailed at the end of the dispute.
("Gold Against The Soul" from the album of the same name)

Thatcher.

Cuckoo's Nest"
("R P McMurphy" B-side to "Stay Beautiful". Live version on B-side
of
"Little Baby Nothing")

j1) MADONNA - 80's to 90's pop diva who courted controvesy with her
'raunchy'
live show and her book of sexual fantasies, "Sex". Also took part in
a
promotional campaign for Pepsi. Has recently just had a baby girl.
("Slash N'Burn" from the album "Generation Terrorists")

k1) NORMAN MAILER - US author, smart arsed cynic, writes some funny
stuff.
("Faster" from the album "The Holy Bible")

l1) MATTHEW MAYNARD - Glamorgan cricketer. Made his debut for England in
1991, but seemed outclassed against West Indies bowling. Later went
on
Mike Gatting's "rebel" tour to South Africa. Captain of Glamorgan
(the
only first class Welsh team) this season.
("Mr Carbohydrate" B-side to "Design For Life")

m1) MILLER - This could be Arthur Miller the author of "death of a
salesman",
or more likely Henry Miller. Henry Miller wrote several books
that were banned on the grounds of obscenity. His books include "the
tropic of cancer" , "The tropic of capricorn" and "Black spring".
("Faster" from the album "The Holy Bible")

n1) SLOBODON MILOSOVIC - Belgrade Serb leader in the current ex-Yugoslav
civil war. Held by many to be a war criminal, and to be responsible
for
the breakup of Yugoslavia by pushing a greater Serbia policy.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

o1) KATE MOSS - waiflike supermodel, blamed for encouraging young girls
to
believe an impossible body shape is 'natural' and thus encouraging
them
towards anorexia. Also appears in 'Dead Passive', with Johnny Depp,
as
in 'the ballad of Kate and Johnny'
("4st 7lbs" from the album "The Holy Bible")

p1) MUSSOLINI - Fascist leader of Italy during WWII.
("Of Walking Abortion" from the album "The Holy Bible")

q1) DENNIS NIELSON - Serial killer. He was born in Scotland, joined the
army as a cook, moved to London. He strangled young men, cut them up
(this is where his training as a cook came in handy) boiled them up,
and flushed them down the toilet or threw them in the bin. He was
caught
when the neighbours complained of blocked pipes, so a plumber went
down
below the house and discovered (not only a sickening smell) but what
looked like pieces of chicken.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

r1) PHEONIX R - Actor River Pheonix, most famous for dying on the street
in front of Los Angeles club The Viper Room after overdosing on an 8
ball (heroin & cocaine mixture). His OD shocked everyone because he
was
thought of as being a health nut and anti-drug, even though he was
raised by hippies.
("Ifwhiteamerica...", from the album "The Holy Bible")

s1) JUDGE PICKLES - controversial judge, now a tabloid columnist. His
judgements have included telling rape victims that they "asked for
it".
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

t1) HAROLD PINTER - Playwright. Wrote "The Birthday Party".
("Faster" from the album "The Holy Bible")

u1) SYLVIA PLATH - poet (author of the Ariel poems), who explored
holocaust
imagery, committed suicide. Was married to current Poet Laureate Ted
Hughes.
'The Girl That Wanted to Be God' is the title of a Plath biography.
("Faster" from the album "The Holy Bible" & "The Girl That Wanted to
Be
God" from the album "Everything Must Go")

v1) POL POT - Cambodian genocidal dictator, leader of the Khmer Rouge
guerillas. He declared 'Year Zero', meaning that all previous
culture,
farming techniques and opinions were worthless. This lead to the
deaths
of millions of his countrymen, through starvation and executions. He
is
currently in hiding with his Khymer Rouge guerillas, after the
Vietnamese
army invaded and deposed him. It has been alleged that British
funds,
British mercenaries and British weapons have supported him.
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible" & "Natwest, Barclays,
Midlands,
Lloyds" from the album "Generation Terrorists")

w1) RASCHER - Doctor Sigmund Rascher, who was put in charge of
experiments
on prisoners by Himmler, at Dachau. His work was obviously
revolting, but
he met an ironic end; he had managed to persuade Himmler that his
(Rascher's) wife had given birth to several children after she was
about
forty-five (Himmler being obsessed with fertility&the master race
etc)
when in fact they had been adopted. When Himmler found out he was
so angry
that he imprisoned Rascher and his wife, who died before the end of
the
war.
("The Intense Humming Of Evil" from the album "the Holy Bible")

x1) LUKE RHINEHART - Author of the book "Diceman" about a psychiatrist,
Luke,
who begins to live his life by the throw of a die. He'd have six
options
ranging from pleasant to highly unpleasant and he forced himself to
carry
through the whim of the die. As you can probably guess this leads to
all
kinds of trouble, especially when he starts getting other people
into
it.
("Patrick Bateman". B-side to "La Tristessa Duerra")

y1) PAUL SMITH - Fashion Designer
("Nostalgic Pushead" from the album "Gold Against The Soul")

z1) VALERIE SOLANOS - founded the 'SCUM' - Society for Cutting-Up Men -
and
was jailed for 3 years for an attempt on Andy Warhol's life. She
felt he
did not appreciate her 'genius' as a playwright. A new film 'I shot
Andy
Warhol' describes these events.
(quoted on sleeve notes of "Generation Terrorists")

a2) PETER SUTCLIFFE - This is the (in)famous Yorkshire ripper. He killed
about 10 (or was it 14) women in Bradford/Keighley/Leeds area. His
motivation... well according to him "god told him to do it". He
killed
mainly prostitutes by hitting them on the back of the head with a
hammer.
If you want a clear picture of him read "Voices from an evil god".
It
is very interesting and just shows how evil he actualy is. 'poem for
jacqueline hill' (anon), or even 'ballad of the yorkshire ripper'
(Blake
Morrison) give insights /angles which perhaps this list hasn't yet
provided.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

b2) FATHER JOSEPH TISO - Slovakian wartime leader, who collaborated with
Hitler to save his country from outright invasion. He was executed
in
1947 by the Americans, but is becoming an increasingly popular
figure,
other than with the Jewish community, in the newly independent
Slovakia..
("Of Walking Abortion" from the album "The Holy Bible")

c2) TWIGGY - UK model in the 1960's responsible for the female
androgynous
look (like Kate Moss now), and the person who bears a lot of blame
for female anorexia.
("4st 7lbs" from the album "The Holy Bible"

d2) MIKE TYSON - World championship boxer who was sent to prison for
rape.
"Tysons money ain't as free as junior Kennedy's" is, a reference to
both
William Kennedy Smith's rape trial and Mike Tysons rape trial, both
having
substantial money behind them. Smith got off lightly, whilst Tyson
ended
up in jail.
("Dead Yankee Drawl" B-side to "Little Baby Nothing" CD1)

e2) YOSHINORI UEDA - may be a Japanese serial killer (also featuring in
the
Rolling Stones song 'Too Much Blood'). He pleaded insanity, and was
released soon afterwards to write a book about his 'exploits'.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

f2) WILLS and HARRY - Prince William and Prince Harry. The sons of
Prince
Charles and Lady Diana (or whatever title she is given nowadays).
The oft
forgotten victims in the Windsors marriage breakdown and subsequent
divorce.
("Sculpture Of Man" B-side to "Faster/P.C.P.")

g2) YELTSIN - Boris Yeltsin, leader of Russia. Recently entered hospital
to
undergo a heart bypass operation. Nicky once said of him, "(he) is a
figure of hate to us. A person who is basically an alcoholic...
That's
a personal, petty Manics thing."
("Archives of Pain" from the album "the Holy Bible")

h2) ABRAHAM ZAPRUDER - Dallas hairdresser, who filmed the 1963
assassination
of JFK on his cine camera. This is the famous piece of film, used
repeatedly throughout Oliver Stone's 'JFK', and magnet for
conspiracy
nuts. It apparently suggests that there were several gunmen,
possibly
firing from the grassy knoll. However, Oliver Stone also suggests
naked
Indians danced on stage with Jim Morrison, so make up your own mind.
("Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" From
the
album "The Holy Bible")

i2) VLADIMIR ZHIRINOFSKY - leader of the Russian (ironically named)
Liberal
Democrat Party. Despite having a Jewish grandfather, he is
anti-Semitic,
and preaches a return to aggressive foreign policies, and a greater
Russia. This populist platform has won him up to 20% in elections.
("Archives Of Pain" from the album "The Holy Bible")

SECTION 3.3. REFERENCES IN THE SONGS
====================================

a) ARBEIT MACHT FREI - "work brings freedom". Ironic motto of the death
camps, where many occupants were literally worked to death.
("The Intense Humming Of Evil" from the album "The Holy Bible")

b) "BE PURE, BE VIGILANT, BEHAVE" - a reference to the UK comic
"2000AD".
This was the slogan of a character called Torquemada, an evil fascist
dictator who's big idea is the extermination of any life forms that
aren't "Pure" human. I think Richie or Nicky made a comment about
"2000
AD is the best literature being published today", or something, in
the
early days? [asim...@ims-global.com]
("PCP" from the album "The Holy Bible")

c) BRADY BILL - American legislation, requiring a waiting time before
the
purchase of firearms. Named after James Brady, Reagan's Press
Secretary,
who was brain damaged in the assassination attempt on Reagan.
Although a
Republican, he appeared at the Democratic Convention, supporting
Clinton's
moves on Gun Control.
("Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" From the
album "The Holy Bible")

d) CUBA - Immigration problems 'started' when Castro allowed Cubans to
leave for the US. Many Cubans died en route; they sailed on flimsy
rafts
and disease was also rampant. This problem was resolved in Sep 94
when the US promised to grant 20,000 entry visas a year to Cubans,
and
Castro agreed to prevent emmigration.
("Ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart" From the
album "The Holy Bible")

e) EST - electro-shock treatment. Psychiatric treatment - read Victor
Bockris's Lou Reed biography for an account of its effects.
("You Love Us" from the album Generation Terrorists")

[or this alternate explanation from Kerry
<kbez...@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca>. Ed]

EST -(Erhard Seminars Training) is a cult which definitely would have
a
PR problem. It was started by Werner Erhard in the 1970s. It's based
on
re-shaping your outlook and improving your head through
self-awareness
techniques and following Erhard's dictums and practices. Of course he
has
ruined people's lives and is a blatant sham. He started the Hunger
Project (Feed the World by changing the way you think) which drew
support
from various celebrities but never amounted to anything.
("You Love Us" from the album Generation Terrorists")

f) EXXON - Oil company. Their tanker the 'Valdez' ran aground off the
coast
of Alaska in 1989 causing the worst oil spill in U.S. ever.

g) FILA - line up, form a queue, get out of here.
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible")

h) HARTHEIM CASTLE - A euthanasia facility near Linz (now in Austria).
It
was known as the "Dachau sanatorium" and feared by Dachau inmates.
If
someone fell ill and was sent to Hartheim to recover, they never
returned.
An excess of 1200 died there between 1941 and 1942.

i) MASS OF DEAD INSECTS - A Buddhist ceremony, also mentioned in Masuji
Ibuse's Hiroshima novel "Black Rain" where he states...
"The Mass for Dead Insects was a rite performed on the day after
the [harvest] festival, when farmers would make rice dumplings as
an
offering to the souls of the deceased insects they had
inadvertently
trodden on as they worked in the fields."
("Mausoleum" from the album "The Holy Bible")

j) KULTURKAMPF - "culture struggle". Bismarck's campaign to repress
German
Catholics, and force them to take on a more 'German' Protestantism.
This
can be seen as a forerunner of Hitler's policies.
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible")

k) KAFFIR LOVER - Derogatory term used by white Affrikans about someone
who
sympathised with the struggle against apartheid.
("Kevin Carter" from the album "Everything Must Go ()")

l) LAGERSTRASSE - "camp street". This accuses 'ordinary' Germans of
complicity in the Holocaust, since the camps were open knowledge,
often
close to towns themselves.
("The Intense Humming Of Evil" from the album "The Holy Bible")

m) LA TRISTESSE DURERA - 'the sadness continues' - a line taken from
Vincent
Van Gogh's suicide note.
("La Tristesse Durera" from the album "Gold Against The Soul")

n) LEBENSRAUM - "living space". A central part of Hitler's world view,
the
need for Germany to conquer land in the East, in order for the German
race, and German culture to develop.
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible")

o) MEXICO: Illegal immigration from this country to the US is an
ongoing
problem, and US' efforts to stem illegal immigration have been
controversial. Also, Mexico's increasing activity with Cuba, such as
Mexico's investment in Cuba's refinery, and the purchase of part of
Cuba's telephone comapny, has further strained relations with the
U.S.
("ifwhiteamerica..." from the album "The Holy Bible")

p) MEIN KAMPF - "My Struggle". Written by Hitler during a spell in
prison
after the First World War.
("Natwest, Barclays, Midlands, Lloyds" from the album "Generation
Terrorists")

q) NATWEST, BARCLAYS, MIDLANDS, LLOYDS - All high street banks in the
UK. The
precise order is due to their placement in Blackwood high street, the
Manics
home town. The lines "...barclays iron eagle..." and "...black horse
apocalypse..." refer to the logos of Barclays and Lloyds
respectivley.
("Natwest, Barclays, Midlands, Lloyds" from the album "Generation
Terrorists")

r) RAUS - "out". As in 'Foreigners Out', or 'Get Out'
("Revol" from the album "The Holy Bible")

s) TOWER COLLIERY - a coal mine that was closed because it was believed
to be
uneconomic. However, after the workforce bought it out, new sources
of
coal were found, and the mine started turning a profit.

SECTION 4.1. BOOTLEGS AND AVAILABILITY OF RECORDS
=================================================

Many old Manics singles are extremely hard to come by, so hours of
searching
second hand record shops may be required, as if you needed an excuse.
Theme from M*A*S*H in particular has now been deleted (though is
available on
Greatest Hits '92). 'New Art Riot' appears to be periodically rereleased
by
the record company Damaged Goods, to prop up the rest of their label. An
alternative of course is to get some bootlegs, which often contain live

The Sound quality on the first concert is above average for a bootleg,

SECTION 4.2. SAMPLES USED IN MANICS SONGS
=========================================

a) DEMOCRACY COMA - it's a mixture of Allen ginsberg's HOWL - 'the
hospitals,
jails...whole intellects disgorged in total recall' and a slowed down
line from the song - 'in walkman sounds hear sony control'.

b) SPECTATORS OF SUICIDE (Heavenly Version) - is this Malcolm X?

c) YOU LOVE US (Heavenly Version) - the long sustained intro is from
Penderecki's "Threnody To The Victims Of Hiroshima"

d) MOTOWN JUNK - "Revolution" Is from Public Enemys song "Revolutionary
Generation", which is on the album FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET.
There is also a sample from 'Charles' by the Skids

e) LITTLE BABY NOTHING - from the film 'A Streetcar Named Desire',
starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. The words however are spoken
by
Kim Hunter. (The sample only appears on earlier pressings of
"Generation
Terrorists")

f) REPEAT (UK) - "London, England, consider yourself, warned" comes from
the
track 'Countdown to Armageddon' on the Public Enemy album 'It Takes a
Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back' - apparently recorded live at the
Hammersmith Odeon.

g) STARLOVER - "You blind baby" comes from the song 'She Watch Channel
Zero' on the same Public Enemy album.

h) LOVES SWEET EXILE - The poetry at the beginning is read by Patrick
Jones,
Nickys brother.

i) YES - from channel 4's Red Light Zone season show called, "Pimps,
Pros,
Hookers, and their Johns". The sample came from the director of the
film
being led around a whorehouse being told everyone was for sale.

j) IFWHITEAMERICATOLDTHETRUTH - is from a program shown on GOP (Grand
Old
Party = Republican Party) cable T.V. Public Access show (hosted by
Laurie
Pike?), called "United States of Television". The sample probably
comes
from a Channel 4 programme about US Public Access TV.

k) ARCHIVES OF PAIN - "I wonder who you think you are?" is a famous
quote
from the mother of one of the girls killed by the Yorkshire Ripper
said
to camera's outside the court room in Leeds.

l) OF WALKING ABORTION - The clip about "regretting my entire life and
wanting to live it over again" is in fact ex-President Lyndon B.
Johnson
talking after his exit from the Whitehouse.

m) 4ST 7LB - comesn from a programme in the 'Video Diaries' series about
the life of a bulimic. The girl in question was Samantha, one of the
twin sisters whose story was all over the papers recently - at least
one
of them died. She was too weak to stand up, or even to support her
own
weight unaided.

n) FASTER - "I hate purity, I hate goodness....."This is said by John
Hurt in
the film of George Orwell's "1984"

o) MAUSOLEUM - "I wanted to rub the human face in it's own vomit... to
force
it to look in the mirror" is from J. G. Ballard talking about his
book
'Crash' which deals with the relationship between sex and automobile
accidents.

p) THE INTENSE HUMMING OF EVIL - Possibly from footage of the Neuremburg
trials?

q) PCP - "227 Lears (as in King Lear) and I can't remember the first
line"
comes from a film 'The Dresser', with Tom Courtenay playing the
dresser,
and possibly Albert Finney as an old actor speaking these lines.

r) ELVIS IMPERSONATOR - finishes with a sample of the song 'Dixie',
extremely
distorted.

s) BLACK GARDEN - Starts with distorted and echo'd 'Battle Hymn Of The
Republic'

There has also been a book published called "Design For Living" by Paula
Shutkever. It's published by Virgin (ISBN: 0-7535-0078-7). Current
consensus
is that we are still waiting for a decent book to be written about the
Manics, however this is as good a stop gap as any, and well worth it for
the
photographs that it contains.
