The music is fine, the video I'm not so sure about .. sorta blocky. I
just uploaded it and Youtube says it's still processing, so maybe it'll
get better in a bit. Honest, it wasn't all low res when I sent it :-)

I absolutely love it!
Now for a tune with vocals...:)
Cool Jim, thanks for sharing. Now where do I send the razor to?
<G>
Let's see ... in no particular order ....
- the drums sound mechanical ( fair enough, they were midi )
- the biking stuff is boring.
- eating a mcNugget is boring.
- how about, could you find a snow covered slope somewhere with kids
riding slidy boards down and wrecking ? Video of that would go good with
the music.
- where's the singing ?
- the video is boring. you should, maybe, have still photos or colored
screens that fade in and out over the music.
- what's the story line of the video ? Does it even have one ?
( this comment particularly cut, as it was from my brother who hasn't
even watched the thing )
.... ok, my brain is hurting now. What I seem to be realizing is people
care A LOT more about the visuals than I thought. It's almost like they
don't even realize the song is there. I just talked to George about
posting another tune. He's back and forth with doing more bike, or
something even worse. Says people never understand us visionaries :-)
I'm happy with it as a beginning. The music came over real nice, far
better than I expected based on what I normally hear on youtube.
I suspect there will be segments in the next one of us actually playing
some of the parts. That might help avoid the idea that it's just some
song we downloaded and all we did was post crap video over it.
Yep, need the " see, we're really playing this " section.

> - the drums sound mechanical ( fair enough, they were midi )
Does Logic have any facility for randomizing notes and velocity, i.e. making
them slightly IMperfect, the opposite of quantizing? It's something I've
done a lot of manually, to get drums to sound natural, and not mechanical.

I'd suggest doing your video experimentation on MySpace rather than
YouTube. YouTube is brutal and seriously for the "unwashed masses".
Just make sure to get a "band" rather than an "individual" MySpace
account so you can put your music up.
Ernie
I'll check into that. It might be a better way to go, if the youtube
thing turns into nothing but people wanting to see us wreck, or jump off
a building or something.
Sheesh.
I have another tune salvaged from my old system and want to post it, but
have no idea what to use for visuals. It's a whole different beast style
wise. Still an instrumental tho. Actually these songs were built around
lyrics, but they were never finished past a scratch vocal track. Long
story. I can rather easily mix them down as just instrumentals, so
that's what I'm doing.
Maybe just colored screen washes that fade to and fro ?
Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'm off to take the MySpace tour.

Logic does have that stuff. There is a humanize function and, in their
deep editor thing you can set whatever variable you want to be scrambled
however you want. I use a slight humanize sometimes on hi hat and
cymbal tracks in my duo midis.
Maybe it's too many years of midi, but I don't have a problem with the
drums. And when I told George about that comment he said to tell people
that was the effect we were after, mechanical. Oh, and then he went on a
tangent about us doing a wipeout style thing where we replace the drum
solos parts with a drum machine playing awful, dead perfect machine gun
sounding rolls.
Back to the point, what is it people are expecting re drums ? Is it the
overplaying, or the subtle differences in the sounds of the hits ? Or
maybe it's the way when you use a live drummer, the song wanders around
tempo wise ?
I think it's a combination of all of those. And the one that is hardest
in my mind to " fix " when using midi is the gradual tempo variations.

Hey, I shaved yesterday :-)
And got a haircut, which is a bit on the short side since now I don't
have any combover to cover that growing empty spot on the top of my
head.

I don't think anyone here needs to express and opinion on drum sounds
because we are all pros. Play the track for joe on street and they
will say "sound good to me".
I recognized the Cubase drums because I just put a track together
using CB 4.0. I gave up years ago asking my wife what a cut sounded
like.. "sounds great, I love it". That is why one has a producer. Here
is a link...might work, might not but an ass of re-released tunes.

absolutely
it can be done by twiddling about with the Tempo Track in Cubase for days on
end
Overall, I think you've got a great sound what sound card do you use?

First, let me say thanks for the compliment. I am pleasantly surprised
at the sound, better than I expected. That has me wondering, is that
from the fact that I worked from a " real " audio track, as opposed to
something all mp3'd and compressed ?
I wouldn't swear to exactly what IO card that was. G and I did that in
2006, so, my guess would be it was an M-Audio FW410.
Stuff I do remember is I used Cubase SX3. The bass was a Fender USA
Precision Bass. The guitar tracks are .. all mixed up ... but were,
depending on the part, either an Am Std tele or a Yamaha Pacifica.
The guitar processors we used were a Line6 Pod Pro and Johnson
J-Station.
The acoustic guitar track was an Alvarez ... probably mic'ed with either
an EV N/D757A with the windscreen screwed off, or a Rode NT-1 or maybe
even a direct out from the guitars sound hole Fender Lace pickup.
I don't wanna talk about the drums .... lets just say I'll spend more
time on that in the future :-)

I knew about that link already. Found it ... of all places ... in a
bike shop last week. We were there and talking about my little youtube
project. The owner ( being a real world person ) didn't get concept of
people actually playing music. As opposed, I guess to " imaginary "
people who do that on tv ???
So I'm saying... ah, yeah ... in fact I know this guy... and then I
googled you on the store computer. Played him a few tunes of your
clips, and guess what ? He liked them.
.....
I was surprised to read in your bio that you have more problems with
melodies than lyrics. It doesn't show in the music at all. You got that
island singer songwriter vibe all down pat, seems to me.
Ok, now I'm feeling the heat.
I'll have to post something with lyrics soon, eh ? Maybe after me and
duo chick get the christmas cd out the door. Three down, 7 to go on
that. These are all in my post midi ( which just started ) phase. I'm
getting the acoustic out, finding the chords on the net, then setting
Logic ( insert name of you fav DAV here ) up to record the guitar. Me
and chick sing whatever a few times using only the guitar and the
metronome in Logic. Once she's happy, I hit record and put my guitar
rhythm track down. If it's good, I go back and - still using the guitar
- play a bass line. I'll pitch shift that down later so it sounds like a
bass.
I'm adding drum tracks with my Keystation into a soft synth midi track.
Fast, pretty easy, and with some experience these should sound fine.
They sound more " us " than a commercial midi. More stripped down and
homey. Would they be the best if I were playing dances ... nope. But
smaller intimate venues, they are just the ticket.
Since I went audio backings for our live stuff years back, using tracks
made this way ( mp3's or wav ) is no issue at all. I'm totally set up
that way already. Does " less " instrumentation and polish work ?
Well, yeah, it does. I'm basing that on the big .. opps the computer
wouldn't work at all .... semi-disaster I had at a gig two weeks or so
ago. Because of a system update I did just before a gig, my sound card
would work at all. Learned that at a job, about 15 minutes before start
time. We were forced to do an hour with just one mic and my electric
guitar, no effects.
Surprisingly, it went over. I've thought a lot about that and I'm
expecting to move more in that direction. Deal I made with girl singer
on the christmas cd was from that POV. I'll do one, but no midi, all us,
and all public domain so we can distribute.
