"Yes you can". In your price range, new, probably a Yamaha or Casio
digital piano will do the trick. I have a Casio PX 900. Sells for
around $1000. It has many pre-loaded arrangements, which you can have it
play, however, the keys won't move. It comes with a book so you can read
the music and even play with it. I haven't actually done that on mine.
You can record and play back immediately what you play. It has
SmartCard, so you can save what you play and transfer to your computer
and visa versa, using midi. These pianos don't have all the bells and
whistles like the portable keyboards, but they probably look a little
better in a room. They also have pretty good sound from their built in
speakers. They have a reasonable acoustic piano feel. My casio touch is
just a tiny bit heavier than my old acoustic, but I still like it and
don't have to tune it. If there is a piano place near you, you should go
check them out, especially if the finger response is important. You can
also look on Ebay, there are a lot them.
