I had an opportunity to go to an Open House at the new outdoor Austin
venue, "The Glenn at The Backyard" this past week. This is the venue
where Gord is booked in June, 2007. Since he hasn't been to Austin in
over 20 years, we're all very excited that he's finally going to come
down our way!

The venue is beautiful! Lots of large oak trees in a very "hill
country" setting. The seating is set up one of two different ways -
depending on the performer and the type of audience expected. The
audience area can handle up to 2,000 people standing and sitting on the
hillside, or around 700 seated in folding chairs (I could be a bit off
on that number - I'm not positive if the guy said 700 - but I think
that's close). Personally, I hope the chairs are set up for Gord's
show!

I went on a tour of the venue, including the "behind the scenes" and
"backstage" areas. They have these wonderful little cabins for the
performers and crew to hang out in, instead of the traditional dressing
rooms or green rooms behind the stage. The cabin for the main
performer has a sofa, table, chair, a large table where food can be set
up, a small counter with coffee pot, etc. and a bathroom. There's
another cabin where the catering folks have breakfast, lunch, dinner
and after-the-show-food set up for the performers and crew. There are
a couple more cabins for the sound and lighting guys and the other crew
members. It's a very short walk from the cabin area over to the stage.
It's a wonderful setting, almost like an old-time mountain resort.
The guy giving the tour was kind enough to let me take a lot of
pictures of all these areas, and it's fun to look at them and picture
Gord and the guys being there! I'm hoping (selfishly) that Gord and
the guys won't be in a hurry to leave that night, so they can relax and
enjoy the place for a bit (oh, and also maybe give us groupies a chance
to hang out WITH them for a bit!). ;)

I think Gord, Barry and the band will be very pleased at the setup.
It's certainly a departure from the usual concert hall venue. The
concert is set for June so it will be warm in Austin, but not
unpleasant. And all the shaded areas should make for a very pleasant
summer evening. I, for one, am really looking forward to it - even
though it's more than a year away! And I already know around 50 people
who are planning to be there! Of course, I intend to be the FIRST
person to buy tickets when they go on sale!

Thanks, Barry, and the booking folks, for getting this one on the
schedule. You won't be disappointed. We'll all give you a big Texas
welcome!

Melissa :)

Sorry about the blank posting above. I had a brief case of 'freaking
fat finger-itis' (of which I am a chronic sufferer).

I remember being really excited when the Austin date was posted earlier
this year, and then equally upset when it disappeared. After what
happened with the Ft. Worth and OKC dates last time, I had almost given
up hope for a southern tour in my lifetime, which I'm selfishly hoping
will outlast Gord's. (Or should that be 'Shellfish-ly'?)

I used to get sent to Austin for training back in the good old days
(mid-70s) when I worked for a major oil company in Houston (Conoco) and
there was no world-wide-web, which has pretty much put the quash on
education-related business travel.

One trip to Austin I saw James Taylor, and another one it was Harry
Chapin. And somewhere in there I attended a speech by James
Schlesinger, saw the first basketball game ever in 'the Drum", and went
with a couple of classmates to a little restaurant/bar where a not even
close-to-sober Townes Van Zandt performed. But when he played 'Poncho
and Lefty' he got most of the lyrics right, so that was good enough!

And I would have gone to see Chicago on one trip but all of the tickets
had been sold. Even back then, Austin was a great music town.

As I type this, that really seems like a lifetime ago. But at least
Gord and James are still around to prove that maybe I'm not that
ancient -- except for when I try to get my left hip to start motivatin'
in the morning.

I am hoping to track down an old friend who was still living in Austin
a couple of years ago -- somewhere along MoPac if I remember correctly.

Surely if I offer to take him with me to the show he will score some
tickets for us and let me spend the night at his place. And he
wouldn't hold it against me that I gave him a black eye when he said a
few years back that Gord should hang it up, would he? I guess I'd
better say my prayers on that one. There's always the Residence Inn, I
suppose.

We need to try to arrange some kind of a news group get together, or
'sit-together' at least. I live in Noonday, just south of Tyler, so
I'm only 5 short hours away from where it's gonna be happening next
year. And I can hardly wait! My last G.L. concert was in Houston at
the Woodlands Pavillion in '91 (or maybe '92?).

And that's been much too long.

Hi, Rocky -
The last time we saw Gord in Texas was in Houston at the Woodlands
Pavillion in '93. We've been very fortunate over the past few years to
see him at various places around the country (and we finally made it to
Massey last May!) but it will be grand to see him right here at home!
We are really looking forward to it. The venue is great. And, yes, we
will definitely coordinate, when the time comes, and make sure we all
get together for a visit. See ya next year!

Melissa :)

I would love to be there, too. I am in Garland, a suburb of Dallas and a
mere 200 miles from Austin. I haven't seen Gord since he was in Ft Worth in
the 70's, and that is waaay too long.
