Does anybody know if the song is rooted in real life? Is there a
story behind it? Just what IS "that same old obsession," and who are
the "creatures of evil"?
The thought occurred to me that it might be politics of some type. My
wife thinks drugs? Would be nice to know the real story.
from the SONGBOOK booklet:
THAT SAME OLD OBSESSION
The "same old obsession" is probably another person, maybe a
triangle, or maybe it's just about a person's need to be free.
Anything that lurks out there to detract from or to try to destroy a
relationship is painted as evil in this song--evil personified as a
creature.

In, oh, 1972 I was singing in bars when my wife was coming in to see me
sing with her fiance. I stood up there on stage and sang this song (and
other heart-rending GL songs) while staring straight at her and her
fiance. Talk about pressure.
Is it based on some real happening? Don't know about Gord but, yeah,
for me, it was real.
We celebrated our 35th anniversary last July. And the beat goes on.

Is there another word for synonym?
Congratulations, Ed. Let pass along some advice my father gave me:
"Marriage is pretty rough at times. But after the first fifty years,
it gets easier."
And why were you singing with her fiance?
Wow, it's a great feeling to be back here with Ed, Richard and the ol'
gang.
I just love that song and I did from the first time I'd heard it. It
came to me very quickly and I had no problem memorizing the lyrics
because they are so powerful. I always thought that it was a very
underrated song and I just love singing it.
I don't know what it is but it's just one of those tunes that once I
get into it either I get a stranglehold on it or it gets a
stranglehold on me. I'm not sure which is which. I'm just very happy
it's there. I surrender myself totally to it and sometimes it sends
shivers down my spine. Maybe it's those "creatures of evil" at work. I
was very happy to include it as one of the tunes in our pub jam
sessions in Toronto last May.
Also I was overjoyed to see it made it's way onto the CD "Beautiful A
tribute To Gordon Lightfoot." It is sung here by Maria Muldaur and it
is a listener for sure.
Ed your story is wonderful. I love it!
Cheers, Ron J
I too have loved that song deeply since I first heard it
Interesting that it should be linked now to a possible target of Elvis
I had always thought that it would have been a good vehicle for old
blue eyes himself the guy from Hoboken NJ who was in effect Gord's
boss in the Reprise days.
As for a meaning there was an earlier theory presented buy a one time
Newsgrouper who departed to start his own web site with three
succesful abnd vibrantly active meaningful discussion forums.
The guy from Vienna Austria who used the screenname "corfid" in his

Hmmmm The Chairman of the Board, eh?
You know...I think that would have worked

Hey Richard !
If you heard it from {The Man} himself, that's good enough for me.
Thanks for sharing.

We celebrated our 35th this past June. Our story isn't quite as interesting
as yours though, Ed. It was the "high school sweethearts" thing. :)

Da*n. I only have 28, and counting...
For some reason, I've always associated "Same old Obsession" and
"Fraulein"...
Same sentiments, I guess.
Much under-rated song, I've always thought

Good advice.
> And why were you singing with her fiance?
I was singing TO her as she was sitting with her fiance listening to me.
Trust me, he wouldn't sing or talk with me! :-D
