I saw this posted on eBay for sale. I've never heard of it. Can anyone tell me
something definitive about it before I decide to bid ? Thanks.

I'm not sure which cd it is. There are 2 cd with that title. One is the
authorized cd that was titled Sit Down Young Stranger when it was first
released, the other is a bootleg recorded live at Montreaux. The first one
remains one of my favorite albums, the second is fun to have as it is live.
Andy has referenced it recently as having The Autioneer on it.

Yeah! and, due to some poor mixing, you get to hear Terry and Rick's 'backing
vocals' at a volume they never were intended to be played at. (this is back
when they miked Terry and Rick's vocals) Some people this this detracts from
the performance, others think it adds something. Its only noticable on a few
songs, and I happen to like it.

Perhaps the best track on that whole CD is the version of "Wreck" - it must
have been recorded before the song was well known in Europe because there was
no applause when he started into it. And Gord and the band really nailed it
down that night, excellent performance.

Aww man, I'd love to hear that! I've heard mention of it before, but I've never
gotten to listen to the actual recording.
This brings up something I've always wondered about..well, ok, something I've
been wondering about for a year or so. Why did GL decide to unmike Rick and
Terry's vocals? I do know that when Gord thinks something should be a certain
way, then that's the way its going to be, period end of story. But personally,
I think their voices add some extra richness to Sundown and other songs and I'm
curious as to why Gord thought it would be best that they no longer be heard.
Anyone have any ideas?

it came from France. It isn't live and doesn't sound like any kind of poor
mix bootleg.
tracks are
1. minstrel of the dawn
2 Me n Bobby McGee
3 Approaching lavender

No, that is the "real" issue of IYCRMM. Far superior to the live bootleg that
is floating around. As far as why Rick and Terry are not miked any more, if you
ask them why, they just laugh. I think the thought is that if they sing loud
enough, they will be picked up by the other mics on stage. I wish we could hear
them a bit better myself.

I was going to mention the recording of Wreck too, Andy. For those of us who have
been to a few concerts in the past 20+ years, you certainly notice right away when
the audience is silent during the intro to any of the big songs. Since the
Montreux concert was in June '76, and the album was released in May in the US (and
probably later in Europe), most of the audience had probably not heard the song
before. Imagine hearing Wreck for the first time, not knowing that you were about
to hear a true masterpiece ... I believe the single was not released until later
in the summer.

"If You Could Read My Mind" is the regular, original album released in 1970 on
LP and tape (and originally titled "Sit Down Young Stranger"). The CD that was
being discussed here is a bootleg of a 1976 concert in Montreux, Switzerland.
That CD is titled "Read My Mind". Hence the confusion!

I DO remember hearing it for the first time. It was in 1976 in concert in San
Diego. I remember it vividly, it was so overpowering and the music so
contemporary that even at 6 plus minutes I really thought it had a legitimate
shot at #1.

I remember boasting to folks the next day that it would be a #1 hit for my
favorite performer. Most of 'em knew I was a Lightfoot fan even back then.

I plead guilty to the *poor* mixing at Montreux. In those days Gord liked
the harmonies more up front, but not at ensemble level as in a group like the
Byrds. What I found interesting about the venue was that - unlike a normal
concert hall with two main speaker stacks, the room had roof support columns
with multi-directional speakers attached to each column- some 30-40 in all.
When I first walked in, I thought *This is never going to work* (no bass - 8"
speakers). But it did and,to my surprise, I got quite good sound out of it,
IMHO.

Yeah, I felt the same way when I saw him and the band this year. Half of what
makes "Sundown" is the stellar harmony, but Gord does all the harmonies himself
on the old albums and maybe he feels they can't 'cut it', who knows? I think
that even a competent harmony on that song and others (Cotton Jenny, Never
Too Close) would add something sweet.
As for the original post about Ebay, I also came across "Waiting for You"
for 4 bucks, and I bid immediately. The bidding on that one ends on 6/1, so
if anyone wants to ootdo me, you have 24 hours, but I hope you don't. I always
swore I'd never buy anything online, and look what it took to change my mind!

Thanks for the story, Richard! I have wondered for a long time about that
show. I see how you would have had to alter the mix for such an odd
loudspeaker layout.

I had been told that a "sound board" recording of that show existed because of
a radio broadcast of the show. Not knowing for certain how such things are
produced, I had wondered that perhaps the radio producers may have come up with
a different mix than what was played over the speakers at the show. I guess I
know now!
