On Sunday, one of the two news servers I use to access this group reached 5
years of archives--they have not deleted posts in this or (to my knowledge)
any other non-binary group posted on or after June 22, 2003. Who knows,
they may continue adding space so that they can always date back that far,
in which case all of those posts would always be available to us.

But in case they don't, is there a software program that will automatically
download and store an entire newsgroup? I'd like to archive this and a few
others for posterity...and of course no one has the time to download the
posts one-by-one.

Google Groups has an archive going back even further; they bought it
from someone else whose name escapes me. Most of us are content to live
with their archive, which is searchable. Whether it will last forever is
a good question. ISPs are dropping Newsgroups at an accelerating speed,
some in reaction to the New York State Attorney General's actions.
Whether Cuomo tries to reach out and challenge Google too is quite
another matter! I tend to doubt it.

Yes Well.
I have just removed my previous reply that got sent before I was
ready and as I personally find the subject of the newsgroup and its
history to be rather interesting I composed a rather long
explanation, that included references to remarq.com that ws probably
the reference that Valerie could not remember and which superseded
dejanews before google got involved.
And as a direct response to Arnold's question I wished to raise the
possibility of using Outlook Express to
save progressively alt.music.lightfoot threads to your hard drive
automatically.
beyond that I do not know if Microsoft's full Outlook program woulfd
be any help... Valerie do you have any ideas??
But what I intended to say became so long that the newsgroup declined
to accept it.Rather than waste all my hard work and
research therefore I have adapted my text to a web page which you can
find at:-
