Name for Gord's sidemen?
Landon Johnson
Street Band or Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band), what would it be?
I'm not sure I'm a proponent of the idea in the first place, but if pressed
I would offer 'Light Touch'.

question - I can hardly even think of a wise crack let alone a sincere

if Tony Orlando & Dawn seemed to work well, I don't know why Gordon
Lightfoot & Sundown wouldn't also develop a ring to it :)
most folks I know just refer to Lightfoot and the Band as 'Gord' - as
in 'tonight we are going to see Gord'
I like how legends (ok, many celebrities too) can be referred to by
their first name and the rest goes without saying:
Gord, Frank, Sammy, Dean, Johnny, Bruce, Elvis, Madonna, Cher, Celine,
Shania, Whitney, Britney (ok, I will stop there...)

This is a cool topic and it is one that has come to mind several times
over the years. There's a host of names that probably could be easily
applied but I don't think any could top "The Lightfoot Orchestra." He
tagged that one on the same way he writes his songs. Pretty clearly

For me, I just always refer to "Gord and the guys," but Char and Ron
are right -
"The Lightfoot Orchestra" is it. Gord coined the term and what works
for Gord

Well, if memory serves, they had a name (really a nickname) for
themselves, at least in the '80s: "Hogs" (from Hogtown, slang for
Toronto). I recall several times, when they were heading out to the
airport after a performance, hearing one of them call out "OK, Hogs in
space!"
I think it might have come from a name of a softball team they played on,
but my memory of that is fuzzier.

Well now Landon Melissa hit the nail right on the head when she said

As you can readily see this group as a meaningful forum is virtually

I had noted your apologetic return to the Newsgroup.after a 10 year

Now as far as the sidesmen's name goes on the Reno video for example
they are listed as "with the Lightfoot Band.
My first thought was the same as Matt's The Intended" but the CHarlady
as ever is correct .I personally get a big kick whenever I hear Gord
wryly introducing "the members of the Orchestra" so that must be it.
Finally Landon, you might not yet be aware that way back in 1999

Close but Not Quite!
The original 70s nickname was the "Sweathogs," and it had nothing to do with
Toronto at all. It was from the name given the special students in "Welcome
Back, Kotter." The name served a two-fold purpose. First, it kept us
humble and therefore on track. Secondly, it reminded us of the importance
of working up a good sweat in doing the best we could for Gordon.
You are right on about the softball team. In 1978, in a best 2 of 3 series,
we whupped the Good Brothers softball team twice consecutively with yours
truly on the mound. We even had team t-shirts courtesy of Pee Wee. On the
front was a hog pitcher ready to throw the heater.
Barry was team captain and put himself in left field. We had a strategy
session and Barry & I decided I should throw mainly breaking stuff, jamming
their right-handed hitters inside so they would pull the ball to left where
either Barry or hotshot shortstop Charlie Morgan would handle the play.
After the game, Bruce Good came up to me and said, "you were just throwing
us junk, weren't you?" (Ahh.. YEP)
The home plate umpire was Mason Reese--the diminutive red-head from TV
commercials. We caught Brian Good trying to bribe him with a $5 bill!
Ahhhh the memories.........

Still have my glove but thinking of passing it on to my grandson. I
love softball but baseball was my favorite game. When the war ended in
1945 the Americans were still in Newfoundland (my birth place) as
there were still many German submarines still off the coast due to
Hitler trying to get a foothold into America. I grew up with
Americans as they lived there with their families all around us. They
showed me how to throw curve balls, fast balls etc. as I always wanted
to be a pitcher. And to this day I still love to get out there and
throw the odd curve ball. I remember well when they brought their
beautiful cars which arrived on ships and we would line up on the
docks and watch them arrive. The 1949 Cadillac was my very favourite.
Newfoundlanders never saw anything like it. Eventually the American
kids we grew up with would get their parents to take us out for rides
in those cars. I'll never forget it. A great memory out of such a
bizarre situation. It's pretty cool what comes out of these Gordon

This appears to be in 1978 so as I believe Bary Keane did not join the
Orchestra until a bit later this Barry must be the late Mr Harvey??

Wow - the range and depth of this group never ceases to amaze me! I
dredged up a couple fragments of memory from decades past, and get the
real story from the "horse's mouth". Amazing.
Thank you Richard for posting the details of this piece of Lightfoot
history, and correcting the mistaken assumption about the origin of that
name that I made the first time I heard it, and never bothered to question
or ask about. And nice to have you here!
One wonders at what kind of "oral history" of Gordon and the band could be
put together from all the experience that gathers (or lurks) here...

Nice one Joe, I considered the Shadows but somebody else got in there
first when our Cliffie boy had to rename his backing group (originally
the Drifters) because there was of course an existing group by that
name, Funny that two names later used by Gord as song titles. Also of
course the Two Tones on their singular single release covered Sir
Cliff's song from the film "The Young Ones" "Lessons in Love" b/w
"Pretty Polly" . I always assumed this was possibly because Gord had
seen the film whilst in London at the time and that for some reason
the song meant something special to him at that time.
