A PAINTER PASSING THROUGH Gordon Lightfoot Reprise 946949-2 (Warner import)
GORDON Lightfoot turned 60 last month, which might explain (but doesn't
excuse) why the veteran troubadour's first CD appearance in five years is on
import only. The voice may have thinned out and the pace seems more
unhurried, but he's still writing and singing good songs. That applies
especially to the lovely, autobiographical title track and evocative Ringneck
Loon, as well as painterly pieces such as On Yonge Street (Canadians say it's
the world's longest street, 800 kilometres from Toronto to Manitoba) or the
children's ditty Uncle Toad Said. Lightfoot's acoustic guitars are augmented
by his long-time band of Terry Clements (guitar), Mike Heffernan (keyboards),
Rick Haynes (bass) and drummer Barry Keane, plus a roster of guests including
pickers Bill Dillon and Daniel Lanois (the latter's resonant mando-guitar
enriches On Yonge Street). I especially liked the gently perceptive Much To
My Surprise and his affectionate cover of I Used To Be A Country Singer, but
at less than 38 minutes, the disc's underweight for a CD. More please next
time, Gord ... and sooner!
Mike Daly edits Music Reviews
On Saturday nights on the ABC (that's the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation) radio programs come out of Sydney and are networked nationally
The Kevin Naughton evening show, has a 1/2 hr segment called "Sidetracks"
where they look at the music of various singers and on Saturday 21/11/98 the
artist featured was Gordon Lightfoot. The people presenting the show Kevin
Naughton and Andy McCarthy featured 4 interesting music selections the
first was IYCRMM, hang on!! it gets better SIS, CI, MTMS!!! and Tony Rice's
rendition of EMR (when was the last time you heard any of these songs on
radio and nationally at that?) They mentioned the fact that he had a new CD
and said that it was very good. Mention was also made of the fact that his
voice had changed and said that it was due in part to throat cancer. This
surprised me and I suspect it is not correct. Anyway overall the program was
very good and presented his music in a very positive light . This show is
broadcast into every state and territory capital and regional centre in
Australia and although Saturday night is not the best night to listen to the
radio this broadcast gave me heart that many many people would have heard it.
The ABC's listening demographics is that of an older age group audience but
I hope that people will now be asking their record stores for APPT and Warner
will be shamed into releasing this very fine CD
Also the dance version of IYCRMM is charting very well on the dance charts
and is receiving lots of air play on stations like FOXFM which is the top
rating FM music station in Melbourne.
Ahh all good stuff !!!!!!!!!!
