On July 17, 2006, I posted this inquiry:

Hi,

I am going through my old tapes and I ran across a section where I
tried
to recreate the music heard at the memorial for John Lennon on
12/14/80 in
NYC at the Dakota/Strawberry Fields. There was a Bach piece that was
played before or after the silence. Can anyone tell me what it was. I
seem
to remember more music before or after too so if anyone knows what was
played, that would be great.

(I was there. Very depressed anyway at the time. A reporter from ABC
tv (a
new guy to Eyewitness News, dark hair, camel's hair coat) came up to
me as
I was standing still while everyone was moving around me and asked me
how
I felt or something, what did this service mean to me? I don't
remember my
answer but some day I'd love to find that video...)

Cheers,

Lipwak

Today, I ran across a notebook I kept and found my notes on what was
played. Since I couldn't reply to that post, here is what I had
written down.

Sun 12/14

Keith Jarrett? Bach? after I arrive. Sitting, it fades in and out,
helicopters circle, TV trucks hum behind me & someone plays an old
concert tape. (All My Lovin', She Loves You - in Shea Stadium?) Cold
stone beneath me, fair skies, deep bass Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring
(with drums (thumbs down))
Beethoven's 5th (choral movement) from jazz to classical to shlock
to...

Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring

Then the crowd started to move around. I stood still. ABC TV reporter
interviewed me. Why are you here: The same reason everyone else is.
What does this mean to you: I'm trying to make sense out of his life,
his death.

They thank me and leave.
I stand and write.

A girl asked me what music they played. I wrote her a list. I kiss
her. She tells me she kissed him and knew about the Xmas present Yoko
was going to give him, some bookshelves made for him in some upstate
NY town where she and her husband lived.

I write in the same spot and now they announce, leave, quietly, go
easy on those in the front row.
Getting out of hand, I go.

So, those are my notes from that day,

Cheers,

John L
