Does anyone out there know whether John Paul Jones is/was a fan of Keth
Jarrett? I am sure I hear echoes of Jarrett's K"oln concert in several
of Jones' piano solos from 1977; most notably on May 30 in Maryland. I
am not saying that he copied anything directly, but his style is quite
similar.
For those unfamiliar with Jarrett's work, in his concerts you can hear
what solo improvization is all about. He manages to spontaneously
compose pieces of real beauty, that most composers would be very happy
to have written; they are genuinely melodic and always developing.
Excellent stuff. Anyone interested in his work should check out his
(deservedly very famous) K"oln concert (1975) or his Vienna concert
(1991); both are very accessible to the general listener, not just the
hard-core jazz fan. You should be able to find his records in the jazz
section in most reasonably large record stores.
