As cruel as some comments are, it's refreshing to see a list that does not
contain plagiarists and pretenders such as Bon Jovi and Metallica.......

If Jethro Tull didn't go in the wrong direction after Thick As A
Brick, may be they would have made the list. I still don't see them as
pioneers. Led Zeppelin III came out in 1970. And it had a mix of folk,
prog rock and blues. Jethro Tull were most likely following the
path.... just making somewhat longer songs.

None of these 12 bands sound the same. How is the list one
dimensional? You could also make a case that Pink Floyd, Yes, Can,
Kraftwerk were not even rock.

Amazingly, you have eliminated all American bands playing rock music.

You eliminated all of the Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and The Band
because they didn't achieve sufficient "mainstream popularity of the
band during their time."

Ever heard of Watkins Glen?

300,000 people to see one performance by THOSE particular bands.

Beatles are a 70s band?

They have been highly important to post punk/new wave. A lot of indie
acts and other mainstream alternative acts like Radiohead cite them as
major influence. Joy Division were Kraftwerk followers. U2 ripped off
Joy Division. Radiohead are big Can fans and they even covered one of
their songs.

lol, wiki is wrong then...and a bunch of rock critics who initially
accused them of stealing the CSNY sound. I guess CSNY were not folk
then.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Led_Zeppelin_III

"Composed largely at a remote cottage in Wales known as Bron-Yr-Aur,
this work represented a maturing of the band's music towards a greater
emphasis on folk and acoustic sounds"

"As noted above, Led Zeppelin III marked a change in focus for the
band from late 1960s hard rock to a more folk rock or electric folk
and acoustic inspired sound."

"The song "Gallows Pole" is an updated arrangement of a traditional
folk song called "The Maid Freed from the Gallows".

Although the band's expanding musical boundaries were greeted warmly
by some, detractors attacked the heavier tracks as being mindless
noise, while the acoustic material was criticised by others for merely
imitating the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.[11] Page
suggested that this comparison was unwarranted, stating in an
interview he gave to Cameron Crowe that

when the third LP came out and got its reviews, Crosby, Stills and
Nash had just formed. That LP had just come out and because acoustic
guitars had come to the forefront all of a sudden: LED ZEPPELIN GO
ACOUSTIC! I thought, Christ, where are their heads and ears? There
were three acoustic songs on the first album and two on the second."

> Oh, and Tull did not go in the wrong direction after TaaB; for me,

I like Songs From the Wood. Heavy Horses is okay... But do you see the
huge GAP between Thick As A Brick and Songs From the Wood.

Between Thick As A Brick and Songs From the Wood (mind you I am a Tull
fan),...there were 4 turd like albums

A Passion Play .... boring as death
War Child... hardly memorable
Minstrel In the Gallery... painful to listen to
Too Old To Rock N Roll, Too Young To Die... utter travesty

You don't listen to folk music like I do. Having more of a folky sound
still does not really make it folk. Even basing something on a folk
song (I concede Gallows Pole has its roots in folk) doesn't make it
folk. But we're arguing artificial boundaries from different points of
view. I just don't recall any of the folk and folk-rock fans I was at
college with referring to LZ3 as folk at all.

tracks too but patchy overall. The other two are not amongst my
favourites though I do own them.

I thought people were responding to me.
I actually deleted the post that started this, but Raja saw it anyway.
My bone of contention is always lumping the 60s in with the 70s.

I understand to a point. I saw a documentary about the influence of
Kraftwerk for example. But I do stand on separating the 60s from the
70s. Yes there was experimental music in the 60s and yes, in the 70s, I
don't meld them together.

I remember saying in a post how U2 copied Joy Division before I ever had
heard it mentioned anywhere.
I just don't care about Kraftwerk and Can, especially Can who seem very
obscure.
People like to be 'redundant' about the 60s, I am about the 70s.

Hey marble-mouth, you once again demonstrate your ignorance and total
lack of musical knowledge. There's not a rock and roll band in the

been influenced by be-bop.

Bono has admitted he copied Joy Division's style.

> I just don't care about Kraftwerk and Can, especially Can who seem very
> obscure.

Well, they did make a lot of great experimental albums. These are the
albums I would recommend.

Kraftwerk
------------
Kraftwerk 2 (1 is pretty good as well.,their most rocking album and
least electronic album)
Autobahn (an all time classic, somewhat rock and somewhat electronic,
and groundbreaking)
The Man-Machine (great songs, Trans Europe Express was repetitive, but
not this. purely electronic pop, sounds very new wavish)

Can
------
Tago Mago (the greatest experimental/avantgarde achievement in rock
music)
Ege Bamyasi (slightly transitional album between the insanity of Tago
Mago and ambience of Future Days)
Future Days (ambient classic)

> People like to be 'redundant' about the 60s

Jethro Tull was no more folk than Led Zeppelin. You can call Fairport
Convention, Bob Dylan, Steeleye Span as proper folk rock maybe

Yeah because it is not pure folk. It is folk rock mixed with hard rock
and prog rock.

experimentation done in other genres before rock n roll

you didnt make any point here. Rock N Roll started in the 50s. It
wasn't really experimental in the 50s. Even if it was (there was some
instrumental rock), it wasn't popularized to the masses that much as
lets say Sgt Pepper or The White Album.

You're as phony as a three-dollar bill, "Raja." You're a tourist pretending
to be an authority, despite the fact that anyone exposed to your bizarre
formulas and lists for determining musical value finds them laughable at
best. Seriously, "Raja," how many people have ever praised your childish
rants on music? Your efforts are universally greeted with ridicule and then
exploded in precise detail by people who can easily show your facts and
figures are wrong and your conclusions arbitrary and foolish. You might as
well be passing judgment on Norse poetry or submarine design, you simply
don't know what you're talking about and you inevitably end up looking
foolish. One more thing, your website does indeed suck ass, but at least
you keep your "poetry" hidden--that's a small blessing.

If Jethro Tull didn't go in the wrong direction after Thick As A
Brick, may be they would have made the list. I still don't see them as
pioneers. Led Zeppelin III came out in 1970. And it had a mix of folk,
prog rock and blues. Jethro Tull were most likely following the
path.... just making somewhat longer songs.

Raja boy is more concerned with getting his mother out of the house so
that he can get a free masturbation than with actually learning
anything about music. If he took his hand out of his pants for 5
minutes, he might actually learn something about music and appreciate
it for more than being just something to make stupid lists over.

I wonder how old Raja is. He's obsessed with masturbation and knows
nothing about music. Sounds as if he could be a 14 year old boy to me.

I saw some of it years ago before you hid it. It was the most painfully
childish rubbish imaginable, the sort of thing a moody teenager would write,
full of theatrical angst about the meaninglessness of existence and so on.
I laughed so hard I almost pulled a muscle. Your views on music are cut
from the same cloth--it's hilariously funny stuff, you're the only one who
doesn't realize that.

"Let It Be" was released in May 1970. That makes the Beatles a 70's
band, dickwad.

However, the Beatles are actually a band for the ages.

You make this "maze" of qualifiers so your favorites (which are pretty
much the same as mine) are the only bands to make it through. And
these bands where at their height from 1970 to 1980. The way the list
is put together is horrible

Not really. Most of the career was spent in 1960s. Let it Be was
recorded in 1969. Doesnt matter when it was released. How the West Was
released in 2003. Are Zeppelin a 2000's band?

Point you 2 bands? How 'bout you point me 1 band on the list that
launched after 1975 ... just 1.

Time is a dimension, by the way.

Why does it need to have a band which was launched after 1975? I don't
think any original band which launched after 1975 was good enough for
a long time like these were. List me some original bands which you
think came after 1975 who made such a impact as those 12!

I can think of a few... but they don't fit the criteria (note that for
Kraftwerk and Can, I made the popularity as an exception since they
made some really groundbreaking experimental music)

Joy Division - groundbreaking - yes, good for a long time - no (didn't
even last long), popular - hardly
Iron Maiden - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - yes,
mainstream popularity - somewhat
Metallica - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - not
really, mainstream popularity - yes (but not when they were really
creative)
Radiohead - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - yes,
mainstream popularity - not really
Ramones - groundbreaking - slightly, good for a long time - fucking
no, mainstream popularity - somewhat
Wire - groundbreaking - yes, good for a long time - no, mainstream
popularity - absolutely not
Sonic Youth - groundbreaking - not really, good for a long time -
somewhat, mainstream popularity - no
Talking Heads - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - yes,
mainstream popularity - absolutely not
The Fall - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - yes, mainstream
popularity - absolutely not
Porcupine Tree - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - yes,
mainstream popularity - absolutely not
Pixies - groundbreaking - yes, good for a long time - no, mainstream
popularity - absolutely not
The Clash - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - no, mainstream
popularity - somewhat
The Cure - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - somewhat,
mainstream popularity - no
REM - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - yes,
mainstream popularity - yes (but not when they were really creative)
Weezer - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - no, mainstream
popularity - yes (but not when they were really creative)
The Smiths - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time -
somewhat, mainstream popularity - somewhat
Husker Du - groundbreaking - somewhat, good for a long time - no,
mainstream popularity - no
Nirvana - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time - no, mainstream
popularity - yes
The Smashing Pumpkins - groundbreaking - no, good for a long time -
somewhat, mainstream popularity - somewhat
U2 - groundbreaking - hell no, good for a long time - yes, mainstream
popularity - absolutely

It doesn't *need* to, unless you want to avoid being one-dimensional.
Someone charged you with that, and you said, "Tell me how." Well,
that's how. Your list is one-dimensional as to rock history;
everything is from more or less the same era. Now, if your taste and
aesthetic judgment don't permit you to add anything from after 1975,
fine. Don't distort your views -- just admit that your preferences are
one-dimensional as to this criterion.

I'm sorry for this whole subthread Raja.
The Beatles are actually a 90s band and Kraftwerk
invented technopop.

My mistake.

600,000 people attended Watkins Glen.

Those of us who WERE born in the '50s actually REMEMBER bands from the
'70s like Zeppelin, The Who, the Allmans (who celebrated their 40th
anniversary last year), the Dead, The Band, Yes, etc.

The Dead were together for 30 years before Garcia's death. The
remaining members have toured together and separately since.

The Allmans celebrated their 40th anniversary last year.

You can't resist the impulse to flaunt your ignorance can you? Do you
even know who Cage, Varese, Glass, John Cale, Boulez or Stockhausen
are?

Oh, I know, they're not "ROCK". So fucking what, you can't really
understand anything without a larger context. You seem to have it all
narrowed down to music from a ten year period that features cute guys
with long hair and tight pants. That's why you only exist for us to
mock.

And you still won't even discuss Zappa who lays waste to all of your
assumptions, prejudices and arguments in too many ways to enumerate.
But he doesn't count.. because why? Not cute enough probably, or he
might just be too challenging for your homoginized, blinkered musical
POV.

What have you got against gays?

Seriously shithead "GAY" <> "Bad" or "Lame" or whatever you're using
it as shorthand for.

You've topped yourself for pure ignorance with that one. Didn't think
it was possible.

They still talk about that concert up there you know. I was tehre over
the summer for a race weekend and the folks who were there back then
say it was pretty much the same deal as what you saw in "Woodstock"...
save they had a better venue with more crowd control capability. The
"hippies" really managed to piss off the farmers for sure.
