It will be great to see some of my favorite bands like Beatles,
Stones, Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, AC/DC in there.
And weird not to see bands like Yes, Deep Purple, Rush in there.

How many records do you have sell exactly to be in Rock n Roll HOF?
Deep Purple fans claim they have sold 100 million records. Yes fans
say Yes has sold about 35 million records. Isn't 35 million enough?
Not many artists have sold as much. And also I would like to see Rush
one day. But not before Yes and Deep Purple.

The thing that will irritate me the most is seeing Genesis (who purely
got in there because of their "80s pop" sales) in there before Yes got
in and Aerosmith in there before Deep Purple (please tell me Aersomith
were a more important hard rock band than Deep Purple) got in.

The closest "Raja" will have ever come to rock music will be visiting a
museum--is that pathetic or what?

The Rock n' Roll hall of fame criteria is simple. "Does Rolling Stone
Magazine like you?". If they do, you get in. If they don't, you don't.
Easy as pie.

The Hall is mainly a museum. You will see plenty of artifacts from
bands that have not been inducted in the hall. The HOF itself is just
a short hallway within the museum containing reproduced signatures of
the inductees on one wall - nothing more.

Madonna being there is okay. I do not like her music. But she has sold
truckloads of records. The problem is they have artists like Velvet
Underground who havent sold shit. How is Rush not famous enough to be
not in there but VU is?

Worst insult is all the 4 main punk bands are in there - The Clash,
The Ramones, The Stooges, The Sex Pistols. But only 2 main prog bands
in there - Pink Floyd and Genesis. And Genesis are in there because of
their pop period. Genesis didnt sell anywhere as close to Yes, Pink
Floyd, Jethro Tull, ELP, Rush as a prog band. Some say Moody Blues are
prog but I have a hard time calling them prog. They need to be in
there as well. They were very popular and sold a lot of records.

good article

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/post/116151-letting-the-freaks-and-geeks-into-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame/

As the years progress, the process of getting into Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame is beginning to look a lot like the process of earning a
letter for a high school letter jacket: The superstars (Bruce
Springsteen, Prince, Aerosmith) are awarded just for showing up, as
are the academic overachievers who are still social enough to get a
seat on student council (U2, The Police, Talking Heads). However, the
nerds who create the science fiction clubs and painstakingly put
together the yearbook (Rush, Genesis, Yes, Kraftwerk) face a much
steeper battle for recognition. And while you can’t really letter in
smoking, there’s no way to recognize the smokers and the class-
skippers (Slayer, The Replacements), those folks who are just as
essential as the jocks and student council presidents in defining the
experience that is Rock and Roll High School.

Perhaps by coincidence, the same year the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
turns 25, KISS may finally get their due as inductees. They have been
eligible for almost a decade. And while I’ll be the first to praise
Hall of Famer Jackson Browne, there’s no question who has been more
influential in rock. Alice Cooper may have been first, but KISS made
makeup and pyrotechnics almost essential in a big-time rock show. KISS
was one of those bands that inspired thousands of teenagers to want to
form a band to get to that level—the stage explosions, the groupies,
the outfits. But the Hall of Fame is like a selection committee for a
state dinner: you want to invite the people who’ll make you proud, not
ones that will embarrass you. But sometimes you have to acknowledge
those very folks (which is one possible reason why the Sex Pistols
took a great deal longer to get into the Hall of Fame than the Clash).

Fans, and even non-KISS fans, have been screaming to let KISS into the
Hall of Fame. But now that their work is done, people have started to
raise a ruckus about why progressive rock has not been represented. As
for speed metal fans, a Metallica nod won’t be enough to keep people
from demanding a Slayer induction as well.

The nomination of Genesis is a decent start for progressive rock, but
King Crimson, Yes, and Rush are still patiently waiting for
nomination. One problem for progressive rock is that, in general, it’s
not a genre adored by rock critics. But regardless of whether you
think 2112 or Relayer is a masterpiece, progressive rock’s most
notable characteristics (the odd time signature shifts, full albums
broken into “acts” or “suites”) are everywhere in rock. If a song by a
rock band exceeds eight minutes, chances are high that there’s going
to be a Yes comparison. Even a band as critically adored as the
Decemberists has garnered plenty of prog rock comparisons.

At least Rush or King Crimson will put on a polite show at the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame concert if and when they get inducted. What the
hell would a Slayer performance be like? Don’t think that doesn’t
cross a voter’s mind when he or she is filling out their ballot. As
most rock historians should know, rock was never intended to be pretty
or suitable for an awards banquet. And the exclusion of the geeks,
nerds, and troublemakers—who not only contributed significantly to
rock, but helped build foundations for an entire genre of music—is
inexcusable.

Sales have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with induction.

Nothing.

And there is absolutely no point in bringing sales up.

It does however need to be renamed thus:-

'The myopic American view of musical history HOF'

It can't be taken seriously, it's as parochial a list as you would ever lay
eyes on. Not that it's a recent phenom, you're talking about a society
that somehow engineered Elvis to the position of a diety at the expense
of people like Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Little R.

Wow, there was racism and class discrimination in the U.S., especially
in the South, in the 1940s, 1950s,1960s, and today.

What a shock!!!!!!!!

That society was part of the birth of rock and roll to begin with.
Rock and roll is a mishmash of AMERICAN music and AMERICAN culture,
the contributions of European performers notwithstanding, most of whom
were copying American styles to begin with.

Elvis was a good looking, poor white trash, country boy, with a good
voice and taste in blues, country, and gospel music. He became very
popular because of those characteristics.

Were black blues artists ripped off and discriminated against? Sure.

Elvis himself was ripped off and mismanaged by his illegal immigrant
manager, "'Colonel' 'Tom Parker.'"

Why go there when all you have to do to get your daily ration of
politics is to pick up the afternoon paper?

ladies, I did check out the rnr hof yesterday. the building seems
quite modern for a rnr related building. there was a Pink Floyd themed
The Wall and The Divison Bill structures out there. There was a Bruce
Springsteen exhibit. They showed movies of the induction ceremonies.
It was overall very nice. The bummer was I could find all the
memorabilia I could find except rock band t-shirts.

One thing which pissed me off was they had a picture of Robert Plant
and Jimmy Page, but not of John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Are they
assuming bassists, keyboardists and drummers are worthless?

You did not mention guitarists in your earlier post, but guitarists
are a dime a dozen, like drummers. I'm not up to date on
how easy it is to find bass players, but finding a
keyboardist.....that knows little more than the basics would
also be harder to find.

Four. George played most of the synth parts on Abbey Road, plus
likely some piano on their later albums. Ringo played organ on "You
Won't See Me" and piano on "Don't Pass Me By."

Five if you count George Martin.
Six if you include Billy Preston.

I got nailed by a cab while rolling up to a red light on Market Street
in Philly. Traded wrecked bike (at full value!, Those were the days)
for the last 2002 Ultra on the lot. (everybody wanted a 100 year
anniversary bike). took the Ultra out for a test cruise as far from
the city as I could get in one day (Johnstown PA) and on the way home
a deer bolted out of the woods and (I'm told) kicked me square in the
face knocking me and the brand new bike into next week.

After that I moved to Harrisburg, hoping to find a safer place to
ride. Coming home from a quick 100 miler one morning one of my
nieghbors ran a stop sign and nailed me.

That didn't stop me, but it got me thinking about it. Two years later
I had sold the bike. Life is short enough. But boy, I do miss it every
time there's a nice day and the guys on my street get their bikes out
and ride them around the block. (no, seriously, there are two guys on
my street who have bikes and never seem to ride them for more than
half an hour at a time. Maybe that's the secret)

I once had a crazy bitch, for NO REASON, try to run me off of the road
(in town) with her Cadillac. There wasn't the slightest doubt in my
mind that it was intentional, since she kept moving over into my lane
even though I was honking and yelling. When we stopped at the next
light, I kicked in her passenger door. She didn't even look at me while
I was doing it. Some idiots passing by thought they'd come to her aid,
but I whipped out my buck knife and backslapped it open. They moved on.
I was so pissed that it took several pitchers of beer down at the local
tavern to calm me down.

You must have a really sad life that you have to spend your time
irritating people anonymously. I'll bet you don't behave this way in
real life, because if you did you wouldn't live very long. One of these
days, you're going to piss off somebody the way you're doing in this
group, and they will track you down and take care of your ass. It won't
be me, but there are a lot of crazies out there (worse than you) and
you're playing Russian roulette. Keep it up, and sooner or later you'll
click on a live cylinder and will go away.

Truly, the term "fool" fits you like a glove.

The post to which I'm replying is a forgery which I did not send. It was
sent through x-privat.org, with whom I don't have an account. I only
post through Computer Country (an ISP in Oregon).

The alt.comp.freeware newsgroup is being flooded with forgeries. Keep
your eyes open by checking message headers, specifically looking for
"x-private.org" in the path statement. Better yet (if you can) set your
news reader to flag everything sent through x-privat.org. Note though,
x-privat.org isn't the only service being used to post forgeries to this
group.

And yes, I know this reply is cross-posted just like what I'm replying to.
