I mean, with the restrictions, I can't really argue with the bands
picked, maybe the album selected, but seriously, 100 bands who've
released a relevant album in the 00s? I'd probably have to pad it
with in flames and shit too lol
> Yob - The Illusion of Motion
My favorite, but I haven't heard the first 2.
> Napalm Death - Time Waits for No Slave
LNF2 was probably the best thing they've done this decade. All their
albums from Enemy... on are kind of the same to me. I kinda want to
say The Code... was my favorite more recent one. This one they picked
is the newest, no? Probably explains why it was in their minds...
> Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
DUH.
> Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation
DUH.
> Dying Fetus - Destroy the Opposition
Not the biggest fan of this lot, but this is generally considered
their best.
> Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
Woulda gone with SHKM. Didn't like this one that much, and I'm
actually a souza guy.
> I - Between Two Worlds
DUH.
> Nasum - Human 2.0
Helvete is my favorite album by them.
> Weakling - Dead As Dreams
Great call here.
> Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
Their schtick has been old for the whole decade.
> Destroyer 666 - Pheonix Rising
curious choice. unusually melodic and less aggressive outing from
them.
> Impaled - Mondo Medicale
> High On Fire - Blessed Black Wings
> Immortal - Sons of Northen Darkness
DUH to all of these.
> Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God
Possibly my favorite album by them. I love the dark ambient vibe on
this.
> Anaal Nathrakh - Domine Non Es Dignus
Last decent thing they did, but not their best.

Pffft, Clayman would have been a no brainer pick for me! There`s plenty of
stuff not to my tastes here* and plenty that I`d have picked that are
missing ( Finntroll, Kreator, Destruction, Celtic Frost, Dark Tranquility,
Windir, Moonsorrow, Megadeth ) but overall it`s a good cross section of
albums.

The last 3-4 Napalm albums have all been fairly similar sounding and of
consistent quality, could have picked anyone really. I`d have gone for Enemy
of the Music Business personally.
> Exodus - Tempo of the Damned
>Woulda gone with SHKM. Didn't like this one that much, and I'm

I think this is a great album, the last Exodus album that really sounds like
Exodus IMO. I lilke the 2 since but considering how few old members are left
and what they now sound like part of me wishes they`d just changed their
name.
> Weakling - Dead As Dreams
> Great call here.
I like this although the singer can be a bit over-bearing...a band who`s
shortest song is over 10 minutes and you like them??!
> Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked
> Their schtick has been old for the whole decade.
I loved them up to this album and then I`d have started to agree...although
I`ve really enjoyed the new one.
> Destroyer 666 - Pheonix Rising
>curious choice. unusually melodic and less aggressive outing from

I`d have picked Cold Steel...but this album has my favourite track...I Am
the Wargod.
> Blut Aus Nord - The Work Which Transforms God

I`ve been really getting into this band after enjoying this year`s release a
lot. I think my first exposure to them was Mort which put me off, this is a
phenomenal album as is most of their back catalogue.
> Anaal Nathrakh - Domine Non Es Dignus

Hmmm, you may want to look away from my top 10 for `09 then!!

It's definitely one of the top albums of the decade.

I gotta admit that while I'm Napalm fanboy, the last 6 albums got very
limited spins.
At the end of the day, I always go back to Scum and HC.

Also top contender.

This is by leaps and bounds my favorite Exodus of the decade. The
others don't come remotely close.

I think I'm the only one in this group that found this record meh.

My contempt of this band is well documented ;)

I have actually grown to prefer Death is the Communion over time, but
both are absolutely essential.

porcupine tree is not REMOTELY metal
Wow, I like about 17 of these.
17?? I`ve just had a quick run through and I like 61 to some extent or
another.
I have heard Clayman, and I believe it to be the best of the In
Flames albums I have heard, but I doubt I'd have it as a top 100.
Tom

That may be true, but that album is better than a lot/most of those
on that list.
Tom

See, you're just not "metal" enough. Quit listening to RiD, and get
with the times.
Tom
A top 100 of the decade where no band is to be repeated twice? I`d probably
have to start picking bands I wasn`t overly fussed about by the time I got
halfway through!
I am not sure how many of these albums I have heard, some of them I
have heard other albums by the bands named. I just didn't count. So,
let's see..Hmm, 28. apparently. With a few being bands I have heard
stuff by, but maybe not the listed album. Damn, I counted the actual
albums I have heard, and it's.... 17,
Tom
Poppycock!!! e`s final statement was 5/6th`s correct.

It becomes a task. What to include, what not to include. If it's a
metal list, though I'd have to limit it to "real Metal" and not radio
rock bands hiding behind a "metal" label.
That would leave out a lot of stuff I like, but so be it.
Tom

Let's see, I know what I like, and I like that album. Just because
you don't doesn't mean it's not a great album. I know a lot of the DM
bands on that list I probably wouldn't listen to their albums more
than 10-15 times tops.
Tom
100? or more?
Guess that makes you more metal than Bomber or I am. I don't like
stoner much, but I do like Doom a lot.
Tom
I can't help it if it's a shitty list.
There's a pile I haven't even heard of on the list. I really have no
interest in researching it all either. I have too much to listen to as it
is. Of the 17 I like...oops 18 ( didn't see Darkane ) I think about three of
those would end up on my top 100 of the decade.
I, too, enjoy In Absentia more than most of the albums on that list,
but PT has no business being on a metal list for any reason.
I think In Flames *at their best* are boring, but at least they belong
on a list about metal.
e.

separating opinion from fact
Doom and stoner have a *lot* in common.
e.

most stoner bands list sabbath as their primary influence
For sure...I was only poking you to get a reaction. There`s not much trad /
power metal on there which is possibly why Bomber isn`t well catered
for...Candlemass, Pharaoh, Maiden, Hammers of Misfortune, Heaven and Hell,
Slough Feg...about all I can see. I`m guessing he`d have the likes of Gamma
Ray, Helloween and Edguy in his list.
I wouldn`t call Green Carnation metal either btw.
>Doom and stoner have a *lot* in common.
Have you heard `Urna`? Just tried giving their last album a go, far too slow
and ponderous for my tastes but it might be more to yours. Sounds like
something Tom Warrior would write if he was having a bad day.
Yea looking back over the years Clayman had the biggest impact on me
of any IF cd. The later ones are good, but forgettable.
I have not heard Uma. Tried checking myspace but no links.
Do you have a link to some of their songs online?
e.

likes slow and ponderous
I don't like Edguy,Pharaoh,Slough Feg, or the Maiden album listed. I've
never heard of Hammers Of Misfortune. The only Candlemass I like are the
last two. I'd say Green Carnation are Metal . The album listed is most
certainly Metal.
Oh, ok. It's not you, it's the list. Got it.

There are some riffs on PT albums that are as metal as most any band
has. But, yeah, I'd not label them "metal"
Tom
Damn good though. You got The Incident yet?

They may have a lot in common, but they don't end up with the same
result. I usually bore of any stoner song within seconds. While I can
listen to Doom metal happily almost all the time.
Tom

If Tom Warrior was having a bad day? I hate to even imagine how
dreary this must be.
Tom
Sounds like a winner. I'll have a listen, providing I can find some
songs.

I've heard of Hammers of Misfortune, just don't think I've actually
heard any songs.
Tom
They are listed as a "funeral doom" metal band. Yeah, that's very
uplifting stuff.
Tom
They`re a spin off of Slough Feg. Who it astounds me anybody could not like!
Have you ever heard of a band called Alcest? Saw them described as shoegaze
black metal which I found hard to imagine...sounds like some early 90`s
indie / Cure type band playing depressing heavy music. Not entirely sure
what I make of it just yet!

No, I have not heard of them. Listening now. Yeah, this is uplifting
as well.
I guess people listen to this when they are down and think, "you
know, my life might suck right now, but it's no where near as bad as
this is"
Tom
Can`t see this being something I go back to...more indie than
metal...reminds me of an old UK indie band called `Ride` from the early
90`s. Black metal my arse!!

John
Now this sounds good! I didn't bother clicking the link until you said
'funeral doom'. The only other band I've heard in this 'genre' is Longing
For Dawn ( which I really like):
http://www.myspace.com/longingfordawn
I guess Ahab fit in there as well. Their first one is excellent, the second
one sucks. I usually use this type of music to fall asleep to.
How much of the list do you actually like? Not how many you have heard of.
the word essential should never be used with Lamb of God, BtBaM and
Gojira zzzzzzzzzzz :) i can listen to Gojira, but find them mostly
boring.
Listening to it now, it's okay I suppose.
I had my fill of stuff like this in the 90's with Thergothon,
Skepticism, Morgion, etc.
e.
--
they were less over the top bombastic
Deathspell Omega are fantastic...the French are producing some brilliant
black metal nowadays, this, Blut Aus Nord and De Magia Veterum are all
great.
I saw WitTR at Hellfest this year and didn`t enjoy them, took a while after
that to bother going back and listening to them but this album is brilliant.
Krallice are OK, a little overly technical for my tastes in
BM...Disillusion`s first is great, I think both Tom and myself had it as
album of the year when it came out. The second is awful though sadly.
> the word essential should never be used with Lamb of God, BtBaM and

I agree entirely, Gojira are just one of those "what`s the big deal?" bands
for me. Insanely boring yet the metal community seems to love them en masse.
LoG and godawful. Never really listened to BtBaM.
The following would all make a top 100 list for me...or at the very least
other albums by the same bands. Ther`s lots of other stuff I like (
Dismember, Morbid Angel, Emperor, Weakling, Arghoslent, Edge of Sanity
etc. ) but I don`t rate so highly. The 4th Emperor album is the only one I
don`t think is amazing.
In Flames - Clayman
Disillusion - Back to the Times of Splendour
Vader - Litany
Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation
Elite - We Own the Mountains
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned

First one good, second one sucks. How many bands like this are
there, (in your opinion) Know it's not Judas Priest as you like their
11th album too much.
Tom
> How much of the list do you actually like? Not how many you have heard of.
I like pretty much the ones I have heard and/or bought. I probably
would listen to almost any of the albums on that list and like
something. I mean, yeah, I am no where near the Black or Death metal
fan some of you are. So some of the albums may be a once or twice
listening thing.
Tom
With Disillusion make sure you get the right album. Apparently the
second album is rubbish.

If not the AotY, in the conversation. I can't really remember what
album that year.
Tom
It doesn't bother if someone doesn't like Gojira, but they should
_never_ be mentioned in the same sentence as LOG.
That's like lumping Nevermore and Pantera.
e.

BtBaM is boring
Looking at my top releases of the year, there are 2 Power Metal bands on it
(Powerwolf,Grave Digger) and neither are the Helloween/Gamma Ray type of PM.
I think Heaven And Hell is the only Trad Metal on it. Keep guessing I guess.
HaH is in your top 10?? I guess I`ll find out over the next week.
I find both Gojira and LoG extremely boring. Although LoG irritate me as
well whilst if Gojira are on it doesn`t bother me.
I thought the H&H was awesome. I have a top 12 on my Last FM page.
I have a tentative top 20 worked out although that`s been recently skewed by
me hearing something I think is awesome. It`ll be tweaked and printed on New
Year`s Day! You have 3 in that top 12 that`ll make mine...I like another 5
of them but not to any great extent. The other 4...are not for me.

I haven't really listened to Gojira, but I don't have any problems
with LoG. If they're bigger than your favorite bands it's because they
have really toured a hell of a lot.
That said, I doubt I will be listening to any LoG albums in the near
or far future.

As e. is apt to say, there are some godly riffs on the album, but
there are a couple songs I don't care for much, but it is a worthy
album and no regrets of putting down actual cash to buy it.
Tom

I'm guessing Amorphis,Rebellion,Grave Digger and H&H are not for you. I'll
be deciding which 2 of the twelve will get the axe to make a top 10 soon.
Kind of...I don`t dislike the HaH, just found it hugely underwhelming. It`s
actually poised to win another of my lists! Powerwolf was the other one I
don`t like...I liked the song I heard on myspace originally but when I
actually heard the album I found it all a bit over-bearing.
I don`t have any problems with their success, good luck to them. I just
think they`re rubbish!! Listening to them irritates me, not the fact they`ve
done well for themselves.
Between the Buried and Me.
Nothing you`d approve of. Wolves in the Throne Room. I saw them at Hellfest
and thought they were boring and haven`t really paid them much attention
since. Listened to the latest album out of curiosity a few days back and
loved it. I put it down to them playing in a packed tent when it was 30C
outside and twice as hot in...I just remember them giving me a headache!
Haha, when Ian calls something overbearing it's like seeing a Chris
Rock fan call something obnoxious ;)
e.

powerwolf is supremely gay :)
>Haha, when Ian calls something overbearing it's like seeing a Chris

I have to rise to the bait here...OK, I like Blind Guardian, Helloween,
Gamma Ray, Sabaton and Therion...but I can`t really think of anything else
that could be construed as particularly bombastic / over-bearing / flowery.
5 bands out of the 500 on my lastfm page is a pretty small percentage!!!
LoG are a good poster child for the blandification of metal.
They very expertly sucked all the soul and feeling from 80's thrash
and replaced it with overproduction.
Yawn.

Ok, I guess that's the point I was trying to make. There's so much
other stuff I'd rather hear.
Tom
I looked that up after I posted. I have never heard them, and that
they're hardcore or metalcore probably means I won't bother.
Tom
Now on a 70's retro kick

Never heard Wolves in the Throne Room As for your flowery likes, I
don't really like three of them.

Tell it, e.
Tom
>> Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
>> Heaven and Hell - The Devil You Know
>> Iron Maiden - Brave New World
> Glad I have a few but man, some of these I've never heard of.
These are the only 3 I've heard, and I love all three of them. I'm not much
into death or black metal which explains why I haven't heard most of them.
There's always time to do some catching up.
Tom
3 down 97 to go.
Wait a sec, you've never heard Nevermore? They're not DM or BM, so
maybe you'd like them.
Tom
I've heard some of their stuff but I haven't heard their latest album. I
like them but I'm not a huge fan.
Nevermore are like a triple amount of awesomeness multiplied by a large dose
of awesomeness and then maxed to an amount of awesomeness beyond all human
understanding.
At this point they are fed through an awesome machine that awesomes them up
through an infinity level of awesomeness which transcends all known levels
of previous awesomeness.
I like them.

Excuse Ian as he changes his pants.
Tom
Yeah, they're pretty okay.

if you're into that kinda thing
As do I, they're easily one of my favorite bands. They were one of the
few metal bands that originated in the 90's that I felt really helped
push the genre forward.

Reading his comments, it's sort of hard to tell what "that kinda
thing" is.
Tom
>Pffft, Clayman would have been a no brainer pick for me! There`s plenty of

Seriously. I don't know how you can make that list without Jaktens
Tid or Nattfodd. IMO, they are the leaders of a metal genre that has
flourished this decade.
>Can`t see this being something I go back to...more indie than

I like that album. It's relation to Black Metal is that Alcest began
life as a black metal band. That is not a black metal album.
Maybe I should rediscover them.
I just can't stomach cookie monster vocals. The closest thing to CM death
vocals that I can stand are the vocals on Wildhoney by Tiamat.

It must be real hard to find metal you like these days then, seems
like almost all of them have some sort of CM type vocals.
Tom
Not really. If you put no effort whatsoever into looking, then ya, they all
have CM type vocals. I think the current trend is to have female fronted
bands.
Tell me about it. That's why most metal I like is classic metal.
Looking through this list there are bands that don`t have cookie monster
vocals...
Electric Wizard
Porcupine Tree
Manilla Road
Arcturus
Candlemass
Pharaoh
Hammers of Misfortune
Slough Feg
Exodus
Witchcraft
Dream Theater
Solitude Aeturnus
Heaven and Hell
Agalloch
Mastodon
Grand Magus
Iron Maiden
Nevermore
probably a few more that I don`t know of...
i checked out the new Grave Digger and like it. they are new to me, i
will check out their back catalog, any suggestions? never heard
Powerwolf, will check them out as well.
That's why I am happy listening to my classic metal cd's. I can barely
tolerate CM vocals. I like when a band sometimes uses them in
combination with clean vocals. I can tolerate Opeth because they are
amazing musicians, but I cant tell you the last time I listened to an
Opeth cd. I also hate when people say just think of cm vocals as part
of the music blah blah blah. CM vocals suck big time!
I just heard Grave Digger for the first time this year as well. In addition
to the new one, I really like 'The Last Supper' , 'The Grave Digger' and
'Excalibur'.
Next thing you know people will be saying 'just think of the bass as part of
the music' . Crazy talk!
Exactly.
I have put very little effort into finding new metal this year, and
yet have still heard plenty of non-DM vocals.

today's music ain't got the same soul
as that old time rock n roll!!
I was being largely facetious there, being on record as one of their
biggest fanboys here :)
All their albums save the debut and Enemies of Reality are essential,
IMO

the vocals are off putting to many, however
I meant to say as part of the instruments, but you know what I
meant :)
Yes vocals are part of the instruments but they shouldn't sound like
the vocalist is constipated and trying to take a dump and sing at the
same time.
