So officially should we just call the TOD?

Anyone got a front runner for album of the year yet?

For me it's

Alcest-Les Voyages De Lame,

with nothing remotely close.

Officially I see where Best Buy is announcing the closing of some 52
stores. Seeing how they just opened one here about 2 years ago, I
doubt we will be losing it, but if we do, then I guess that is that.

Which would leave only the 2 Wal-Marts and a Super K-Mart as places
with any number of new CD's in stock to buy. Excepting of course the
one local record shop in town.

This is like when Dr Who travels to the end of Earth's days when the
Sun is about to go supernova.

Where is TJ? Is he on Facebook?

Just opening one means nothing. A Kmart opened in my friends
neighborhood and when they restructured they closed it down after it
only being there a year.

That is true, put it this way, you wouldn't think they'd close the
new store that quickly, but I stand to be corrected if they do
actually close it.
Of course, I don't know if you remember Electric Avenue and More (a
Montgomery Ward electronics store, a lot like a Best Buy in many
ways), but they opened one in town, ironically in the building that
had been a K-Mart, only to close it not even a year later when
Montgomery Ward went bankrupt.
The local Kmart used to be a Supercenter with a full grocery
section, no they've walled off that section of the store and it's no
longer a Super K. I think there will be more restructuring for Kmart

Here in the D.C. area, the competition for selling CDs is between Best
Buy, KMart, WalMart, Target, FYE, Barnes & Noble, with the Costco and
BJ's Wholesale Clubs offering a little selection. There are a few
standlone record/CD stores but they are few in number.
With Best Buy, not my fault that their Geek Squad seems to be made
up of people who have more accidents than the Three Stooges and Chevy
Chase.
One major annoying thing with today's kids is that to me, they don't
treat CDs and DVDs with care. For example, I have a Defenders of the
Faith CD that I bought in 1987 or 1988 that still sounds as great as
the day I bought it.

I have CD's with nary a scratch after 25 years of owning them.

As for the sound, so long as it does not have disc rot, the sound
will always be the same. As far as I know. Now to my hearing, I am
sure it's not as good as it was 25 years ago.

Tom

CD's aren't beer coasters, hockey pucks or clay pigeons.

So today was record store day.

I went by the local shop. I looked around for a while. No big lines
as DC said he saw where he went.

I bought Starless and Bible Black.

There was a group of 18-20 year old guys, who bought a bunch of used
vinyl albums. They spent about $11 each, and walked out with a good
sized stack of albums. The local shop has always had a large amount of
vinyl new and used, although now most of their collection is used.

Alcest is moving up towards the top of my favorite bands at the
moment. Maybe in 6 months to a year or more, a more accurate placing
may happen. Although right now I am digging them about as much as any
band.

Sign of the times? I was looking to buy a couple albums on Amazon,
and there is a choice. Two Alcest albums. I don't know if you'd like
them, but one is a pricey import on CD which costs $36 and change. The
other album is a digipac that costs $14.99 I believe. Right there is a
choice to buy the albums on mp-3 format. No DRM, 256 bit rate, so only
good ears could tell a difference. (these sound better than some CD's
I have, so I probably could never tell a difference.
Anyway, I could buy the full albums for $5.34 each.
So, I just made my first paid mp-3 downloads. Resisted the dark side
for so long. Always was a physical copy type guy. I do see where a lot
of albums are being offered on Amazon the same way. The CD is several
dollars more.
I have seen my nephew get CD's as birthday or Christmas presents,
only to go straight to his computer and rip them into mp-3's. I figure
most people do this now.
So it's real easy to just ask why bother with the CD?
When, the mp-3 is downloaded right away, and you can be listening to
it within seconds of clicking buy.
You don't have to rip it to mp-3 for your devices.
You don't have to wait days for shipping.
You also don't have to deal with a staff worker at a record store
giving you attitude because he's/she's never heard of said band, and
it's not in stock, so they'd have to play around with ordering it, and
waiting until their shipment to come in, only to find out that then,
the suppliers didn't have the CD, so you have to wait again.
Amazon also offers unlimited cloud storage of anything you buy
from them. So if your device craps out, you can always go back and re-
download it. Although they did say some products may be discontinued
without warning, so I guess it's possible that something you have on
storage could be removed. Not sure how that will work.

Tom

Probably won't be a physical copy guy much longer, I don't suspect.
I'd probably be ripping my whole collection if I had the hard drive
storage, and be done with carrying around CD's.

Usually when I buy a CD, I put it in my car's CD player for a listen
on the way home. I have ripped some before listening to a note,
though.

eh, rough on the CD? I have noticed if you eject on mine and don't
pull the CD out, it can get ejected the rest of the way.
As for standard playing, it doesn't seem to be rough at all.

However, with what you have, I guess it's not needed (CD player). I
guess they probably make car stereo's that accept those Micro-SD type
cards. If so, and you've got 16 GB ones, those will hold a ton of
music.

Maybe the next vehicle I get will have that.

When are we supposed to get those "flying cars" that people used to
say would be a "everyman's type thing" come the year 2000, back in the
70's they used to say that.

Make mine a Mustang with wings, please.

I did find this after posting my message.

I did see a couple things, I don't often look at blabbermouth
anymore.

While reading a review on Amazon yesterday I saw a comment about how
Roy Khan has left Kamelot. So I wanted to see when, and if any reasons
were given. Not much is said, but the official Kamelot website no
longer lists him as a band member and so on. It will be considerably
hard to replace him. I really do not know what to tell them. (if I
could tell them anything, and have them see it, that is)

I also saw that Epica was listed as selling 4,800 copies of their
new album first week out. Which was over twice as much as the previous
one sold it's first week out.
It's nice to see some bands actually sell something for their
efforts.

Even though I haven't grown to like this album much, and consider
Design Your Universe as spotty. The Divine Conspiracy, though, that
one is standing a test of time.

As it is, I've only gotten a few 2012 albums, and really, so far,
only 2 have gotten a lot of plays.

The Alcest album is without a doubt, pulling away in total listens
and consideration for aoty.

I moderately like the Lacuna Coil album. It has enough good songs
for repeated listens, and is their best since Comalies, but it's no
Comalies.

Nightwish? The photos of the band have them looking like circus
clowns. (in the booklet.) 3 listens and I can't pin anything down on
it. Dark Passion Play had some good songs, not feeling the same about
this new one. I'll probably give it and the Epica albums at least a
couple more shots to see if anything can happen.

As for Overkill, not heard yet. I did like Ironbound, but found
limited time to listen to it. Perhaps 5 listens, so not really
expecting to listen to it a lot.

As for a couple of last year albums. Megadeth's 13 has kept my
interest at least some, while after initial love for Anthrax-Worship
Music it's falling away on plays. Good, but I don't know.

I still like Opeth-Heritage, Mastodon-The Hunter and Blood Ceremony-
Living With the Ancients. The Amorphis album also is still getting
plays. Considering 2011 top 5 as still top 5's.

Played today..

Demiricous-One. Yeah, sort of redundant band. Hardcore type vocals,
over almost all the Slayer riffs you remember.
I did sort of dislike this a lot back when I first heard it. I didn't
hate it today, but still feel like it's totally redundant.

Deicide-The Stench of Redemption. Who says redemption has to stink?
Deicide does. Anyway, been quite some time since I last listened to
it. Probably be quite some time before I listen to it again.

Then for a couple classics.

Jimi Hendrix-Kiss The Sky. And older CD, I believe some of it was at
the time previously unreleased. But it's been so long since it was
released (1983-1984 for the CD.) Some great stuff, though.

King Crimson-Starless and Bible Black. Digging this album. Probably
going to get more from them soon. While at the music shop, they pulled
their copy (vinyl) of the live album USA (I believe the title is) for
me to look at, and played their vinyl copy of Red. Which starts with a
pretty thick instrumental.

Ordered.

Camel's Debut. From 1973 I believe. Akerfelt has talked of his love
for this band for as long as I can remember. Figured it was about time
to hear it from the camel's mouth. So to speak.

Masterplan-Debut. Out of print for years, and only for sale at
extremely high prices for used copies. Now re-issued. Not sure if it's
been remastered or not.

Arrived.

There is a bonus live song on the Camel debut that is 19 minutes long.
If you're giving the fans a bonus track, I guess this is about as good
a way to do it as any. The album is quite good.

On Masterplan, now that I read the Amazon details of the album, they
say it's a new limited Edition that is supposed to have a 2nd CD or
maybe it's a DVD. Anyway, the CD I got was just the one CD. So
disappointed there.
But the album is quite good, so, I guess I can take the lumps for not
getting a 2nd disc.

Since it seems like the users here have all went to facebook, I
created a page for us on facebook to keep the spirit of this going. I
know you said you once had an account but deleted it due to problems.
If you set your privacy levels high, you probably could avoid that in

those who are on it can read or post.

I named the page Amjp ams. If you know my name, and I am sure it can
be found on this somewhere, you can then send me a friend request and
I can then add you to the approved users. I set that page up so that
only the 10 users on there can actually see and read the page.
I understand your dislike of facebooks policies, I don't like them
much either, but I don't see many of the users here posting anymore,
and I wanted to set up something to keep the spirit alive.
If you can't find me, you can find Kevin as his facebook page is the
same as his e-mail here, I believe. The Kevin247 address.
I really only think that you, Anders, Jblt and Bomber would be
current users here who aren't on there yet.

Did you see the messages concerning us doing this group on Facebook? If you have an account on Facebook, I, Kevin or one of the others who post here can add you. It's a limited to only those who we know posted here or AMS. Since there's not a lot of posting on the newsgroup anymore, we are using facebook to keep in touch.
I have said about Bruce's solo albums that I have liked them more than I have the Maiden reformation albums. Mainly the two I played this week and Tyranny of Souls. However, I do like Skunkworks and Balls to Picasso a lot as well.

While I don't care whether they succeed or not, I feel the same way
about their privacy policies and choose not to use FB. I do not
believe in the new mindless sharing mentality that people do in
today's world.

Of course this could be a buying opportunity, as if the stock does rebound in the future, and would ever get to Apple levels in price (400-500 per share) or go like Google did, then getting it for around $30 a share right now would seem rather smart. But then, it could run like Microsoft has for the past decade where it's hardly budged. In any event, if you did buy as soon as they would let you now, and it is $30 something, if you then held it and it got to $60 something, you could then sell off half of your holdings, taking all the cash you spent on it and then playing with their money on the other half. And at that point, you could never lose more than you actually initially spent. You couldn't actually ever lose money on it. Even if they then went bankrupt and the stock went to zero.

You're probably right that people do share too much info about their lives. Matter of fact I see stuff people post to their walls everyday that I'd never post myself. I don't post much on facebook to my wall. I do post comments on other's walls and such.

You only need to find me, Kevin or Ian. Any of us could then add you to the group. It is set up as a private, only the users approved to post it, can see it. I don't know that it would show up in a facebook search.
And since you don't like the privacy things for facebook, I'd set all of your levels to friends only. I know a lot of people who have FB accounts for their games only. I know some who've got 3 or 4 accounts.
I also know people who use a screen name to throw off searchers looking for them.

Kevin put on the message here "AMJP on facebook" or something to that nature, and tells how to find him directly. If you can't find me by my e-mail, then that will work if you find Kevin first. He can then add you to the AMJP group. We've already got a pretty healthy number of subjects and posts.

You can search my e-mail, I believe tom_w_b (@) juno.com. Without the spaces and ( ) I put it that way because I didn't want some automated google searcher grabbing my e-mail and dumping a ton of crap into it,. I think Kevin has his e-mail as his facebook name, and Ian as well. If you find their names on facebook, then you can find me pretty fast. Most don't want their actual names put on the news groups.

Actually it is released on CD. And what's more, there is a three pack CD set you can buy, probably under $10, that has the Debut (remaster with bonus tracks), Fire of Unknown Origin and ETL. I know this because it was gave to me as a Christmas gift. It might be hard to find, but I am sure a look at Amazon probably would have it.
Looking at the shelf I do have the old original CD issue of said live album as well.
If there is a FYE in your area still, they may have it, as the one local, which closed, but had a lot of those three pack things from many artists. Best Buy may well have it too.

Amazon does have it, and has 3 in stock. It's $9.99.

They also have the stand alone CD for $6.99. With 8 in stock.

The one I want is the expanded Some Enchanted Evening. It's restored to it's intended double album time. (original CD is 7 songs, I think) and this new issue has 14. It also has a bonus DVD, but is sort of generically filmed in the late 70's quality type video, so it's not a great picture/sound. It is $17 and change, though.
But if you really want to laugh, look for the original issed CD from 1990 or so, as an import they're asking $60 plus. Althogh offered as mp-3 download for $6.99.
Of course if you wanted the re-issue of Imaginos. and were willing to pay what they're asking, $178 new. I have the old original issue of the CD, and when the re-issue was released in 2007 I believe, I got it for $12 or so. Just because a 1988 CD could suffer CD rot or whatnot sometime in the future, and I didn't want to be without.

Pretty sure there isn't an album they did that wasn't put out on CD. Now, if they're still in print, is another thing. Finding them in stock is another thing. However, Amazon usually always has stock of this. Your local FYE probably only has a couple of their best of type releases.
As for never? No, I have a CD of ETL that was probably released around 1990 or so.
The one in the three pack is the same, looks the same and so on. I don't think it's remastered or nothing.
They also have a "set list best of live CD" Which has songs pulled from the three live albums. A fact I didn't know when I got that. Which I believe all the "set list best of's" from any band is mainly just stuff previously released on live albums way back when. I know the Kansas and Judas Priest ones I have are that way. I think the BoC one has one song never released live before or a version never released before.

Always nice to listen to some mellow music. I usually skip as many tracks
as I listen to on this CD...

Love listening to ZZ Top because I am a beginning to intermediate drummer
and love how he plays.

Haven't listened to this in a while, need to again. From the back memories
of my mind I like Th1rt3en better.

God I love this album! I saw Accept open for Iron Maiden on the World
Slavery tour and have been hooked on this album ever since! Man did they
put on a great show.

For this CD they added a few songs on the end that weren't originally on the release. For the record, I usually skip some of the songs as well.

I also love the bluesy rock guitar solos. ZZ Top broke big when I was in Jr HS and HS. Although Eliminator was out right about the time I got out of HS.

And Endgame?

And more ZZ Top. They are supposed to be releasing a new album soon, but truth be told I sort of left the bus when they did Afterburner. I haven't heard any of their albums since.

There is a live CD called "Staying a Life" recorded during this time. Sounds pretty good.

I like the Dark Roots of the Earth although its mellowed considerably
compared to previous Testament releases. Clockwork is typical Rush without
those awful synths, God I hated that time period of Rush.

Yeah, I didn't care much for the synth era of Rush either. However, 2112, Moving Pictures, and some of the other early albums are all quite great. I even liked Presto back in the day, although with all the time gone by, I don't think it's as good as I seemed to remember it.
Mellowed? Testament?

As for the new Overkill. Thrash 101. Sounds great.

I listened to both Th1rt3en and Endgame this weekend and like Th1rt3en
better. Perhaps having Ellefson back is what did it for me.

I love the bass run in Deadly Nightshade.
It's a good album.

Tom

But just don't compare it to Peace Sells.

None compares to Rust in Peace! Man what a album that is. Plus seeing
Megadeth play it live during the Clash of Titans tour at Noblesville in 1991
was superb.

I like Rust in Peace a lot, but in my opinion, it's no Peace Sells
