Decided to pull the next Triumph CD off the shelf as well. Never
Surrender. Also been years.
I mixed one of those fun iTunes random CDs again (where i just burn
the first twenty-ish songs that play when i hit shuffle), and it was
my only listen yesterday:
Mastodon - this mortal soil

Entombed - evilyn
John McLaughlin - siren
Voivod - ravenous medicine
The Doors - do it
Therion - the eye of eclipse
Suffocation - habitual infamy
Radiohead - the tourist
SYL - relentless
The Jesus Lizard - deaf as a bat
Anathema - restless oblivion
Switchblade Syphony - doll house
Faith No More - home sick home
Judas Priest - savage
DCD - the wind that shakes the barley
Death - cosmic sea
Opeth - twilight is my robe
Louis Armstrong - onkel satchmo's lullaby
Black Sabbath - master of insanity

I gotta make more of these CDs!
e.

Gamma Ray - Live At Wacken 2009

Tom
> Augury - Fragmentary Evidence
Does that mean I won't have to sit through them while waiting for Vader to
hit the stage on Monday?
Skeletonwitch-both cd's
Winger-Karma
Kiss-DtK
Cynic-TiA
Dark Angel-DD
Bathory-BFD
Bowie-Lodger
Hatchet-Awaiting Evil
Scar Symmetry-DmD,( like it alot )
i saw Skeletonwitch,Toxic Holocaust, TBDM and Take Them(never heard of
them not bad). i went for SW and TH and both kicked ass. the guy from
TH hung out after his set, and seemed like a cool guy. i got a nice SW
shirt, the place was a complete SHITHOLE(being kind), that i have never
been to, and can do without ever again yuck!!!!!! i caught some of
TBDM, strong band, but even too much going on for me, plus a very long
day.
there was maybe 100-150 peeps. they said it was near the end of the
tour, and every one seemed genuine in their thanking all who showed up.
even tho it was a complete Dump!!!, i had as good a time as i have had
at a show in along time. it was a real metal show and even the smell of
BO and Piss can't ruin that :) btw young attractive ladies doesn't hurt
either haha.
What an interesting list. Some records I absolutely adore (SW, Cynic,
DA, Bathory, Bowie) and some that I borderline hate :)

aren't opinions grand?
It's funny how much a mood band Korpiklaani are for me.
I listened to Voice of the Wilderness the other day while having a
pint with some friends and it was good times, air guitar and
headbanging abounded.
Put the same CD on yesterday and it annoyed the shit out of me, to the
point where I walked across the room to switch to some Concrete
Blonde :)
e.

the wooden pint
As much as I love Korpiklaani I must admit they don`t suit my every mood. I
much prefer their drunken, up beat tunes as well. It`s fair to say they`re a
band who`ve gone quantity over quality in recent years as well!
No, they`re still playing. I don`t really get what you have against them
really, a quality death metal band. The new album is infinitely more
interesting than anything Vader have done in years. That said Vader are a
brilliant live act....Augury may well be shit live I`ve never seen them.
Augury are incredibly boring on cd and live.
This is par for the course with our tastes naturally.

I kind of like it. So it's also par for the course for us as well.
Tom
Soze i checked out the new Blut Aus Nord and it kicks Mucho!! ass. i
finally got Destruction's ED F'n Killer.
i would love to see Augury live.

I'd like to see just about any show.
Tom
I'm seeing Swashbuckle, The Amenta, Augury, Decrepit Birth, Warbringer, and
Vader on Monday. Gonna be a late night. Sucks that I have to get up at 6am
the next morning for work. I guess I can't complain too much.
I heard Triumph on the radio today.
What did you think of Traced in Air?
Ultimately it's nowhere near as good a metal record as Focus, but as a
prog record I still really like it many months later.
e.

Maybe you'd be better off taking the day off to recover. Even though
you're a basic kid, compared to us old guys, you still can't be going
100% all the time.

But, don't they have to play a large percentage of "Canadian
artists" on Canadian radio? It's unfair. Last thing I believe I heard
by Triumph on the radio was "Fight the Good Fight"
I mostly like the middle albums by them. The Sport of Kings and
Surveillance though, sort of spotty and I didn't listen to those
albums much.
Tom
I don't know about "have to," but yeah we are overexposed to a fair
number of Canadian mainstream bands and artists.
If I never hear Alanis Morrisette again, that'll be fine by me!
e.
--
it is NOT ironic...
I had planned on taking the day off, but someone else in my department has
the week off. Caffine will have to get me through it.
I think there is some sort of 'Canadian content' rule. If someone's forced
to listen to it, it might as well be us right?
I have always been a fan so he's held up for me thru the years just
fine.
Also, I don't know if you are aware but he has more albums out than
just 2 :-)
I was not, in fact, aware of that. Should have guessed, though.
Did that broadway musician (can't remember the name) write the
material for his other albums?
e.
--
my band covered heaven can wait in high school
I believe he has a total of 9 studio albums plus a couple of live and
one greatest hits album. If you are talking about Jim Steinman, I
think he wrote a couple songs here and there for Meatloaf between the
3 Bat Out Of Hell albums but that's it. The BOOH cd's are Steinman's
projects.

Yeah, that voice got irritating pretty fast.
Tom
That's too bad. I probably should limit my intake of caffine, but my
doctor didn't say anything about it, and they brought me coffee in the
hospital. I guess it's ok. I am drinking less of it than I was before,
though.

I'd rather not be forced to hear something I don't want to hear. I
guess it's why I listen to the radio only during car trips. I do have
a CD player, but I can't see loading a CD for a 5 minute drive.
Tom
I saw Absu here the other week with a few support bands and the fuckers
didn`t even take to the stage until midnight. I didn`t watch all their
performance, find it hard enough getting out of bed as it is!
This show starts at 8pm. I expect Vader to be on rather late. The Sacrifice
show I saw last week was over just before 11pm! Of course it was on a
Saturday so it didn't matter.
It`s all well and good bands starting late but not everyone that goes to
metal gigs is un-employed or a student! I sometimes work weekends as
well...currently working three days on, three days off...bands finishing at
2am can be a pain in the ass.
Meatloaf is one of those that i would run across the room to shut off :)
I *love* the song `Bat out of Hell`. I think everything else he`s done is
shit. But that one song is so good I`m prepared to forgive him!

That's an asshole play for sure. Unless there's some good reason for
a delay, they should hit the stage a lot sooner than that. Unless that
is how the show was supposed to go. I know some of those festival
things run sort of late in the night.
Tom

Maybe that would be a good thread. Bands you don't like much of
anything by, but one song is enough to forgive the others.
Tom
> i like Tia by Cynic.
>
> Meatloaf is one of those that i would run across the room to shut off :)
I wouldn't rush across the room to shut it off, but I wouldn't play
it to begin with.
Tom
Continued through the Triumph catalog, and yeah, SoK and S are
somewhat like I remembered them. Not something I think I'd go back to
again soon.
I do like most of Allied Forces, Never Surrender and Thunder Seven.

You'll be happy to know I got to the Megadeth again today. I like
it, but probably like TSHF and UA more.
Tom
It's still good.
I`m only happy to know it if you`re happy to listen to it...

I was happy to listen to it. Been a while.
Pulled
Augury-Fragmented Evidence (title?)
Immortal-All Shall Fall
for first listens in a while today.
Tom
i pulled out the Augury yesterday, it is pure genius(just like the
Obscura is).
1349-Hellfire, first time hearing this and love it.
Slayer-WpB
Kiss-Animalize
Scorpions-AM
Municipal Waste-HM, first listen to this as well. after two listens all
i know is, i played air guitar and banged my head alot :)
Laaz Rockit-Left for Dead, just discovered this band recently, what i
have heard i like alot.
Creed-Full Circle, really good.
I like the Creed cd also. Not as good as earlier stuff, but still good.
> i pretty much agree with you tom on the new MD.
That I was happy to listen to it, or that I said I think I like TSHF
and UA more, though?
> i pulled out the Augury yesterday, it is pure genius(just like the

pure genius? I don't know. I like it, actually love a lot of the
guitar solos and such.
> 1349-Hellfire, first time hearing this and love it.
>

Weird mix. I haven't heard the Kiss or Scorpions in ages. I lost
that Kiss CD several moves ago.

I am not a fan of Creed. Heard a lot of their songs, though. If you
went to a place with a jukebox, there for a couple years it seemed
like it was Creed's greatest hits night all the time.
Tom
Well, after 15+ years Focus remains one of my favorite metal albums,
so I'd imagine so...
e.

has fairly consistent taste
I like Endgame *much* more than both TSHF and UA.
It's a very strong contender for AOTY.

NP-Y&T best of 81-85 A little trip down memory lane.
I didn't realize that album was that old.
Tom
i know you have been on a black metal kick lately, so if you haven't,
check out Dark Fortress(i think they are fantastic).
It's fine, but it's not in the league with Mastodon Crack the Skye.
Let alone a few other albums I've been liking. That it's taken so long
to get to 6 total listens sort of says a lot. The songs just aren't
there.
Tom
Dark Fortress? Never heard of them. I promise I will give them a
search and listen.
Tom
> I`m in perfect agreement. Who`d have believed it?!
I have seen you praise the new Nile album. Since I was only a casual
fan at best, do you suspect there's any chance I may like this new
album more than the one I have. Annihilation of the Wicked, I believe.
Tom
Yeah, but we've learned to take anything you say about a record with
fewer than 20 listens with a HUGE grain of salt :)
e.
--
maybe you're just not in a megadeth mood?
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time
Varg - Wolfszeit
Rimfrost - Veraldar Nagli
Roland Grapow - The Four Seasons Of Life
Mob Rules - Radical Peace
Hail Of Bullets - Warsaw Rising
Gwar - This Toilet Earth
Cannibal Corpse - Vile
Katatonia - Night Is The New Day
Woods Of Ypres - Against The Seasons
Skyfire - Esoteric
Darkthrone - Panzerfaust
Darkseed - Ultimate Darkness
Judas Priest - Ram It Down
I`ve given up second guessing your tastes! It`s in a similar vein as their
previous albums, I suspect you`d enjoy it but probably not go ape for it.
I think you said the same about the previous couple of Megadeth albums for
quite a while! It`s difficult to say whether I prefer it to Mastodon as
they`re such different albums. There`s a good chance they`ll take the top 2
spots between them.
Funnily enough someone in work mentioned them today. Not sure I`ve even
heard of them, I`ll look into them on my next days off. I can`t get enough
of the recent Blut Aus Nord and Drudkh albums just now.

No, I enjoy the album, it's just not as good for me as TSHF, and to
a lessor degree UA.
Tom
Of course, on this last one. Of course.
Some of today's
Defiance-The Prophecy
Beseech-Sunless Days
Origin-Antithesis
Blood Ceremony-st.
Tom
Guess I'll have a look see at it.
Tom
Actually it was UA. I liked TSHF off the first time I listened to
it. I only said before hearing it, I was skeptical, as they hadn't
done an album I liked in ages.

Mastodon is up there.

Suffocation, see Napalm comment again. The new Waste is great of course.
Haven`t heard the rest. Looks like there`s plenty to check out still in `09.
Many of my favourite releases ( Kreator, Megadeth, Drudkh, Slough Feg, Blut
Aus Nord, Candlemass, Anaal Nathrakh, Absu, Wodensthrone, Ulcerate and
Voivod are nowhere to be seen! )
>>8. Tombs-Winter Hours
>
> Don`t know
Just checked these out on myspace, first thing I noticed was they played 20
minutes walk from my house earlier in the month so I was hoping to hate
them! They remind me of a cross between Mastodon and Celtic Frost but
despite that I`m fairly ambivalent to what I`ve heard.
>>14. Magrudergrind- S/T
This is more my thing, kind of early dirty thrash sound mixed with DRI
crossover type stuff. Would possibly get boring over 40 minutes but I`ll
give the album a listen.
>>19. The Atlas Moth-A Glorified Piece Of Blue Sky
>
> No idea again
This started off quite promising, slow, depressive, doomy stuff but the
riffs and guitar sound was cool...but then a horrible vocalist just ruined
it for me. If it`s all as slow as the song I heard I`d get bored as well.
>>22. Mournful Congregation- The June Frost
>
> Don`t know
This lot appear to have been around since the mid 90`s but I`ve never heard
of them. Sounds a bit early Paradise Losty, insanely slow and
depressing...not for me!
I`ll come back to the rest tomorrow.
Converge at #2 is laughable(on Chris Rock levels :). i saw them last
month (Mastodon show), they did nothing for me, and the crowd couldn't
care less.
no Augury or Centaurus-A on the list either.
todays plays
Immortal-AsF
S.O.D.- SeoD(possibly the best album title ever)
Belphegor-the new cd
Dark Tranquillity just put out a 2x live cd, will have to check it out,
alot of other goodies out there for 09 as Soze said. Soze i would have
checked out alot of that BM stuff you mentioned, but of course most of
it is pricey oh well maybe soon. that is cool someone mentioned DF to
you at work(at least somebody besides me likes them :).

>7. Slayer-World Painted Blood
>20. Asphyx-Death. ..The Brutal Way
These are the only two that would make my top ten ( I haven't heard 40 good
releases this year) . I liked 4 others on the list (Paradise Lost,Napalm
Death,Katatonia,Suffocation).
Augury
Centaurus-A
Obscura
Kreator
Mastodon
Slayer
Warbringer
MD
Immortal
The Gates of Slumber
Candlemass
Absu
Asphyx
Imperial Vengeance
Dream Theater
Woe of Tyrants
Razor of Occam
Skeletonwitch
Epica
Blut Aus Nord
there is 20 off the top of my head, and i know i am missing alot.
i haven't got my hands on the new Katatonia, i am pretty sure i will
like it tho(song i heard was real good).
I have over 70 albums in my 2009 file so far, need to go through them and
discard a few but there`s easily 40 great ones. I`d subtract TGoS, Asphyx,
Dream Theater and Epica from your list and include Alestorm, Anaal Nathrakh,
Belphegor, Blood Tsunami, Bornholm, The Chasm, De Magia Veterum, Destroyer
666, Drudkh, Ensiferum, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Funeral Mist, God Dethroned,
Municipal Waste, Hypocrisy, Nile, Wodensthrone, Voivod, Slough Feg,
Ulcerate...plus perfectly acceptable releases by Obituary, Suffocation,
Behemoth, While Heaaven Wept, Vader, Tenet, Sacrifice, Napalm Death, Marduk,
Mutant, Korpiklaani, Insomnium, Evile, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Black Dahlia
Murder, Cormorant, Cattle Decapitation...plus great live albums by Emperor,
Destruction and Maiden!
i got my hands on Heathen's- Victims of Deception, if they were ever
mentioned in here i missed it. i love this cd, a hidden gem i am glad
i stumbled upon.
That's good to know. Not :)

What do reviewers know anyway. I saw this at the local shop for
$12.49. I may buy it soon.

Heard one of the two songs on their myspace page before it wouldn't
load any more songs. It was pretty good.

Totally agree.

I am surprised the Kreator and Megadeth didn't get mentioned.
Speaking of MD, Dave now hates RR again. Because his album is off
the charts, although still selling more per week than many albums I
buy ever do.
"Endgame" has sold around 87,000 copies in the United States since its
release nine weeks ago. The CD registered the following U.S. weekly
sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan:
Week 1: 44,696
Week 2: 12,833
Week 3: 8,640
Week 4: 5,583
Week 5: 3,948
Week 6: 3,258
Week 7: 3,225
Week 8: 2,817
Week 9: 2,389
By the way, I did play it Friday at work. Enjoyed it.
I also played Origin-Antithesis. Enjoyed it.
Tom
You got quite a list off the top of your head. I have 7 of those.
Tom
Heathen have been mentioned here. I like their first two albums a
lot.
Tom
And this just shows how far behind I am on getting to a lot of stuff
I'd like to hear.

I neglected to say, the first two albums by this band, I think are
way beyond just good.

The music I like a lot. Not that big a fan of this type of vocals
though. I do think I could live through hearing it a few times if I
had the CD.

On AMS it was stated that Baroness is a bit like Mastodon, but lower
key. I think from listening to this on their myspace page they do
sound somewhat like Mastodon, on some songs, more than a bit. More
like a lot. I think it's something I could listen to a good number of
times, definately think Mastodon should be higher on this list, and
won't pass too harsh a judgment on Baroness except to say not #1.
Tom
If they put Mastodon Cts #1, and Baroness where they had Mastodon,
would make more sense.
>Tom
I have heard Baroness but I don`t remember them making much of an
impression. I may download this new album though, it`s getting a lot of
praise.

A fair chance. I think that's all they could ask for.
Tom
I believe the songs I heard were from the newest album. I am more
tolerant of growling/screeching type vocals than Ritchie is, but I
still don't like them a lot.
Tom
I`m listening to it as I type, sounds OK although I`m not really in the mood
for what they do just now. When in such a mood I may well enjoy it more.
Speaking of which I did play The Mantle by Agalloch quite late last night
and found it rather pleasant, they`ve always bored the bejesus out of me in
the past so when the mood takes hold who knows!
