Overall 2009 was a fairly shit year for me and I am glad it's behind
me now. I won't spew forth with the cliché's that my music helped me
though the year as that would just be bullshit. I made it through the
year due to my stubbornness and sheer bloodymindedness not to let
things get me down. Looking at the music, there have been some
fantastic new releases, but after my top 20, I would struggle to find
much to really talk about or enjoy, though there are a few that I have
recently got that are bubbling under (Overkill and Dark Funeral). Any
of those in my top 20 make it into my album of the decade list,
probably only the Candlemass stands a chance. Those other bands close
to the top have released better in the last 10 years. (Close means
Immortal, Insomnium, Kreator).

That is how Mastodon-Leviathan won my AotY several years back. Hated
the sound of the album so much at first I couldn't stand to listen to
it. But it pulled through to get over 100 listens.

My top 10 this year would be radically different. Of course Mastodon-
CTS and Amorphis-Skyforger probably would be #1 and 2 as they racked
up a lot of listens all year long.
I can assure you that none of the bands you listed would make my top
10 total listens this past year. I haven't listened to Judas Priest a
lot for a while. But will get back into some of the albums this year
for sure.
As for Ian's top 15 played bands, I probably would have some of
those on mine, if I had a Last-FM account. At least 6 of them would be
top 15 played I believe.

I dig this album a good deal. Probably have gave it 20 listens in

>1. Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
Didn`t realise you`d fallen for this so much. I played it a lot when it came
out and there was no doubt it would make my top 20 but in the last 4-5
months probbaly only played it a couple of times.
>2. Immortal - All Shall Fall
I`m a tad disappointed with this in retrospect but it`s still an album I
like a lot.

I really should love Insomnium considering their obvious influences and that
everyone else into this sort of stuff loves them but I just can`t get into

This was another that fell away for me but it came within a gnat`s tit of
the top 25 still. I sometimes think these lists would be better done 6

than some that came out earlier in the year.

and the Absu is great.

I`ve only ever heard / seen the promo video thing which I thought was quite

like it I`m not going to slate you for it! Gama Bomb are tremendous fun...I
almost like them as much as Municipal Waste out of these retro thrash bands.

Overkill is 2010 anyway strictly speaking. I only played Dark Funeral a
couple of times but it was pretty good...I`ve found so much good black metal
lately that `good` wasn`t quite good enough. Been playing lots of the back
catalogue by Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega and Drudkh. Top 20 of the
decade? The top 3 of my list would all be candidates for me...tough call
though. There are a few bands that couple well sew up the list between
them...I`d have most of Enslaved`s releases in there for sure.
> I don't believe I have played a IM album all year long.
I`ve already played one this year! Out of all bands I think Maiden will be
one I`ll always return to frequently.
> There are a few bands that couple well sew up the list between them
What nonsense have I written here?! I`ll try again...
There are a few bands that will sew up the list between them
I could have done a top 50 quite easily this year. A great year for metal.
Which isn`t reflected in your list though, half of which are crap ;-)
This hasn't left my CD player since I got it and I still spin it on
the ipod and 'puter.

This continually puts a smile on my face and the music isn't that bad
either. However the kvlt twats don't like people laughing and
enjoying music. It's serious business.

for me.

I haven't play too much recently and if you asked me to do this list
in 6 months time I would suspect it would fall even further.

That Overkill I have enjoyed so far and will now pop it into my 2010

What, no Morbid Tales?
Scored an old CD when out and about today.
Also got Human.

Should be a good day listening.

Oh, I will return to them, be the old classics, though. Still, if
Bruce is doing a solo album, I am sure I have more interest in that
than the next 2-5 IM albums, provided they do 2-5 more.
Tom
It is Bomber. I'd say more than half is crap.

It has stood out for me as well. Probably 30-40 plays. Just a dozen
or so less than Mastodon probably.

It may set the bar high, but a whole year is such a long time to
find something to top an album.

It`s hit 17 listens for me...I`m judging it on the quality of Immortal`s
back catalogue I guess. It`s not as good as the bulk of it.

I thought you would, I don`t know why they bore me. The new album has some
awful clean vocals on it but the older stuff is clearly influenced by a lot
of bands I adored in the mid to late 90`s but...I can`t put my finger on it,
they don`t hit the spot.

Indeed. I still don`t understand why you don`t like the one you`d leave out
though, should really give them a proper try.

I`m not sure they`ve ever released a "classic" but they`ve been pretty solid
over the years. This album is just particularly good.

About time! Both would stand a good chance of making their respective decade
top 10s but...an 80`s top 10? Man that would be hard!!
I like Candlemass, God Dethroned and Slayer a lot.
Alestorm are fun, the new Skyclad is decent but they`re half the band they
used to be.
The Asphyx I found really boring...although I`m definately in a minority, it
got great reviews. Powerwolf, Grave Digger and Amorphis are all rubbish and
the HaH was bitterly disappointing.
All of his honourable mentions are nothing of the sort.
I like 3 of his disappointments just fine!
I've enjoyed reading the other lists and I doubt anyone cares but here
is mine (in no order)
Abigail Sweet Baby Metal Slut
Legacy Metallic Assault
Defiance The Prophecy
Pelican What we all come to need
Skeletonwitch Breathing the fire
Skaldic Curse World Suicide Machine
Overkill Ironbound
U.D.O. Dominator
Epica Design your own universe
Mastodon Crack the Skye
Candlemass Death Magic Doom
Cage Science of Anilation
honorable mentions:
Megadeth Endgame (good, but not classic)
Slayer World painted blood (verdict is still out for me)
Mantic Ritual Executioner (solid classic thrash, but nothing
more, still I enjoyed it)
Heaven and Hell TDYK (this one would of made the list this Summer,
but I just dont play it anymore and feel at least for now it
represents by far their weakest effort)... still love Dio Sabbath, but
like Priest vocally and creatively I fear their best days are behind
them)
Judas Priest Touch of Evil, this one gets some kudo's for the set
list, but some of the performances are so great (vocally) and some of
the songs are just recycled from their dvd.... so IMO it would of made
a better bonus cd than regular release or even free mp3 downloads...
I think it's interesting that almost everyone includes Candlemass and
Mastodon. Mastodon especially is the best concept metal album in a
long long time if not ever.

Yeah, I was deeply disappointed by both Katatonia and DT this year.

yup, even immortal
Always found Katatonia boring and Townsend isn`t my bag. The Marduk grew on

What, in general or just this album????
I'll have to check out Funeral Mist. I think the guy from Marduk has one of
the best BM voices. I loved the two previous Marduk but this one did nothing
for me.
I wasn`t crazy about Rom 512 either to be honest, Plague Angels was good
though. The new one does get better with a few listens but yeah, it`s far
from a classic. I love Funeral Mist, may well put some on now...
I'm listening to it now. So far the second song was garbage, but the others
just sound like Plague Angel/Rom 512 stuff. Much better than Wormwood. I'll
give Wormwood another listen to see if it sparks anything. I think my list
has already changed. I realized I forgot a bunch of stuff. Oh well.
Just noticed you were playing it...the second song does drag on but the rest
of it rules IMO. The first Funeral Mist album is far more in your face than
this one, came out before Mortuus was in Marduk I think. A right noisy arsed
album.
I liked the 12 minute song. Somehow repetative but keeps you interested.
I'll have to try and find the first one now. It sounds like the drummer from
Marduk (Plague Angel/Rom 512) as well.

I've heard worse clean vocals on metal albums than that. I don't

Yeah, it would be impossible to really do it justice. As soon as you

you second guess your memory.

Not for me it isn't. I like it end to end, and that's a first

there, but I haven't listened to Seasons in ages.

I know the Mastodon is a concept album, but I shudder to think of
trying to explain the story in any way. I know I just stated it to be
the AotY, which is a two-fer for them, but when I think concept album,
I think of a solid storyline that flows through the whole album. An
audio movie. If you will.

Ok, tried to post something, but didn't seem to go. I have heard
Human a good number of times over the years. As for MT, it's going to
be hard to turn back the clock and keep in mind it's a 1984 release.
Will give it several listens to see how much I like it with repeated
listens.

Tom
Revised list to make a top 25...if I can do it...let's find out shall we:
Candlemass - Death Magic Doom
Asphyx - Death...The Brutal Way
God Dethroned - Passiondale (two way tie for song of the year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klnma7-ZPQ )
Amorphis - Skyforger
Alestorm - Black Sails At Midnight
Skyclad - In The...All Together ( runner up song of the year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOwxjxEwZgA )
Heaven And Hell - The Devil You Know
Powerwolf - Bible Of The Beast (two way tie for song of the year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nkdRYkcxs8 )
Slayer - World Painted Blood
Grave Digger - Ballads Of A Hangman
Brainstorm - Memorial Roots
Mob Rules - Radical Peace (Ritchie might like this as it's Melodic Metal)
Saxon - Into The Labyrinth
Attitude - Susperia
Necrophobic - Death To All
Konkhra - Nothing Is Sacred
Pestilence - Resurrection Macabre
Paradise Lost - Faith Divides Us Death Unites Us
Sacrifice - The Ones I Condemn (screw you I thought this was great!)
Rebellion - The ridiculously long title about Vikings Part 3 (still
surprised Ian doesn't like this. Manowar meets Amon Amarth)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APJuqqOUHQY
The Amenta - nOn
Wolven Ancestry - Silence Of The Boreal
http://www.myspace.com/wolvenancestry
Fairyland - Score To A New Beginning ( can you tell they're a Power Metal
band?)
Trick Or Treat - Tin Soldiers
Hail Of Bullets - Warsaw Rising ( it's only an ep but I don't need to remind
you that Martin Van Drunen is a God)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e88mDQkq4vA
This will probably all change by tomorrow.
I wouldn't say bitterly disappointing either. As a regular second tier
doom album it's not bad, but for Sabbath it is definitely
disappointing.
Some awesome riffs, but mediocre songs overall.

I love Katatonia, with the exception of Viva Emptiness and this new
one, which is the worst they've ever done.
Townsend I *love* in SYL, but his solo albums are very hit or miss.
Ziltoid was awesome; this one is quite meh.

Overall, I don't mind Immortal at all, I just don't rate them _nearly_
as highly as you guys do.
Having said that, I own and enjoy PH.

Completely agree.

Completely agree. Half his solo stuff is shit. The next one should be good
as it's going to be 'the heavy one'. 'Ki' was the light one, 'Addicted' is
the rock one, and the next one is going to have guest DM vocalists on it and
be very heavy.

Bitterly disappointing just seems way too harsh a verdict.
Tom
I was speculating yesterday as to what I felt would have made the top
twenty list in 1986 from 2009s releases, and have come to the
conclusion that almost nothing would. As much as it's been a good year
for metal...it's a far cry from the golden era that was the 1980s.
Raw black metal/thrash from japan. If you like Bathory, Sabbat (jp),
and early toxic holocaust...

Is it a bit of nostalgia? I mean those years were the foundation of
much of what metal is now. I know a lot of those 80's and if you're
old enough 70's albums were very good, and the fact that anything
released today is compared to everything you've already heard. I don't
know how that effects you, but I sort of feel like it's about
impossible today for a band to do something that is truely
groundbreaking. They can just do their best, and hope to make music
that people will like. But there's no illusion that it's all original
and such.

It's an interesting topic, and doubtless colored by how in 1986 our
tastes were not nearly as broad as today.
How much does context matter? Sure it's tough to say, but I do have a
solid bit of "uncorrupted" data on this front.
My most played metal album this year is Deceased "Fearless Undead
Machines" - a record from 1997. It was new to me this year, and thus
had no "unfair" leg up on any new metal that was released in 2009. In
fact, if it was released this year, it would be my AOTY without
question.

I wouldn't call it a vote against. I gave it an honorary mention.
It's not a bad cd it's just not up there with the other ones. It has
some great playing but as time goes on I look at it as an extension of
the bonus tracks they did for the greatest hits rather than an album
that is in the same league as the other 3. I wouldn't be surprised if
my opinion changes, it took me years to appreciate Dehumanizer but
there is one thing there is no denying and that is in the vocal dept
and the up tempo Neon Nights, Mob Rules, ComputerGod dept the record
is lacking compared to the previous ones. I think it is impossible
to judge records like this from bands who you have followed and liked
for so long until there is some distance to put them into perspective.

You said the same thing regarding Nostradamus.
About Slayer, I wasn't interested in this record too much after the
last one went forgotten in my collection, but it has worked it's way
into my playlist. I didn't want to comment either way, but as much
as I appreciate what Mustaine is doing and liked Endgame, I never play
it, usually opting for the one of the first 4 if I am in the mood.

That can only happen for me if it's some band I've never heard
before. If I have albums by a band, and have listened, then it's going
to be colored by expectations and "baggage" from the other albums. I
did like the songs I heard off of that album, but I've never heard
anything from them before.

Well, ok. I can see this opinion. I liked the album, but it's only
got about 15-20 listens. If I really liked it, I imagine I'd double
that.

Difference being I think the Mastodon is more kick ass all the way
through. At times on Nostra, it seems like JP forgot they're a metal
band. That could be good or bad, I guess.

I imagine it will never be rated as highly by most MD fans. I know
it will take 100's of listens to get anywhere near what PS and the
like got.
I don't think it will get there from here. Still, I do like both
albums a lot. Not so hard to believe with MD, as I liked the last
couple as well, but it seemed like Slayer became a "we can get a few
songs right, but not a whole album type band. I'm just happy I can
listen to it end to end, without skipping much.

Madness.
I think I was just expecting so much more from it. I`ve only played it 5
times and can`t, in all truth, see myself ever listening to it again.
Hah, this just gets worse, I like even less of your revised list!!!
Fairyland ffs!!
That just shows me how good it is.
So many influential / classic thrash albums came out between 1986-88, for
those of us of a certain age that period will forever be the golden one.
I just checked itunes though and I only have 26 albums from 1986...so
thought *surely* something from `09 would scrape into a top 20? Especially
considering one of those 26 is crap ( Turbo ), 2 are non metal ( a Cure
compilation and The Smiths `The Queen is Dead` ), one is a live album (
Venom`s Eine Kleine Nachtmusick ) and one is a compilation ( Rainbow`s
Finyl Vinyl ). So I`ve had a crack at it...
1. Reign in Blood - Slayer
2. Master of Puppets - Metallica
3. Peace Sells - Megadeth
4. Pleasure to Kill - Kreator
Now, all 4 of these would be very strong candidates for my top 10 *ever*...
5. Game Over - Nuclear Assault
6. Darkness Descends - Dark Angel
7. Eternal Devastation - Destruction
8. Beyond the Gates - Possessed
Definately nothing in my `09 top 20 would touch this lot
9. Somewhere in Time - Iron Maiden
10. Walls of Jericho - Helloween
11. Fatal Portrait - King Diamond
12. Riders of Doom - Deathrow
13. The Force - Onlsaught
14. RRROOOAAARRR - Voivod
15. Doomsday for the Decieiver - Flotsam and Jetsam
16. Morbid Visions - Sepultura
17. The Unstoppable Force - Agent Steel
18. Obssessed By Cruelty - Sodom
19. Possessed By Fire - Exumer
20. Epicus Doomincus Metallicus - Candlemass
But this bunch, great as they are, would get inflitrated by my top 7 from
`09.
Like I said, finding 25 releases to put on a 'best of' is virtually
impossible. I haven't even bought 90% of my list. I think there were only 3
or 4 bands left from my list of things that were listenable this year. I
should have just made a top 29 and included eveything.
I`ve got 78 releases on itunes from this year ( some of these are EPS and
live albums )...a trimming down is needed to be fair but I`d say I like most
of them to some degree. I`ve bought 25 of them, no way I could afford to buy
all that and if wasn`t for downloading I wouldn`t be able to hear so much.
There are another 10 or so I definately will buy, the rest will sit on my
hard drive and perhaps get the occasional listen or gradually get weeded
out.
I have no idea how you manage to listen to that much stuff from this year
and throw in stuff from previous years. 48 hour days over there? The new
Candlemass is my album of the year and I've played it 15 times ( I still
haven't bought it). I think I listen to far more old stuff than new.
I have no life haha. When I was taxi driving I could easily get through 6-10
albums in a working day, depending on how busy it was. Now I`m working three
days on / three days off...if my days off fall on week days I tend not to
have a great deal to do, just sit about listening to music all day whilst
playing games / reading books / faffing about the house etc. When I get
weekends off obviously it`s a different story. I tend to have music on just
about all the time to be honest if I`m at home.
> > Hah, this just gets worse, I like even less of your revised list!!!

No contest. MT will keep playing.

You're damn straight on this. It will never be like that, again for
Thrash. But I have liked a lot of thrash metal albums of late.

Yeah, but would they crack the top few? If I am honest, I doubt I'd
rate any metal album this year over RiB or PS.
Out of your top 20, I have heard 12, many of them a lot of times.
Since I don't have a list of 1986 albums handy, it would be hard to
add any. Although I would add Blue Oyster Cult-Club Ninja. Which I did
play a lot of times over the years. Although pressed, I'd probably
call it more arena rock than heavy metal. It's certainly not as heavy
as most of your list. If any.

If I put up a full list, it will only include stuff I actually
bought. Of course, I almost never hear any albums end to end unless I
buy them. So few are the people I work with and know who buy albums
anymore.

Don't forget, just recently he was stuck in a cab for 8 hours or
more a day, and listened to music almost non-stop. And he did say he'd
been off several days in a row.
I listen to music all day at work, and sometimes like now, listen to
music while on the computer posting here. I have listened to probably
20 or more 09 releases more than 15 times. I probably have put in 50
or more listens to both Mastodon CTS and Amorphis-Skyforger.

20? I believe it is more like 25 years ago.
I was welcoming myself to 30-35 years ago with all the Kansas?BoC
stuff. Which I am sure is way better than Fairyland is.

At work I have to listen to stuff that's familiar to me. There are machines
on all the time and various other work sounds. New stuff doesn't stick. If I
play something like Defenders Of The Faith, I don't have to concentrate on
it. With downloading, I don't give things much of a chance either. Impress
me quick or I'll put on something else. With that Funeral Mist it would have
been into the recycle bin if it weren't for that 12 minute song. The album
sounds good and everything (but really I can just listen to Marduk), but
that one track stuck out and will cause me to give it more listens. I need
to make more use of the playlist function on my Ipod to hear the new stuff.

No, my last sentence there "this bunch" meant numbers 8-20. I`d comfortably
slot the new Megadeth, Mastodon, Kreator, Anaal Nathrakh, Drudkh, Blut Aus
Nord and Slough Feg albums above stuff like Exumer, Agent Steel, Onslaught,
Deathrow etc.
>Out of your top 20, I have heard 12, many of them a lot of times.
Which 8 haven`t you heard? I`m guessing Exumer, Deathrow, possibly Onslaught
( don`t know if they were as big in the US as in the UK )....hmmm, most of
the rest of those would have been standard fare I`d have thought...

Yeah, I tried to listen. But couldn't. If your highlighted songs are
your best of the year, you didn't really try very hard, if you ask me.
Tom
At work I can`t listen to music at all anymore, in an office answering
phones and such. Unusually though there are some people around me with good
taste, the `team` I`m in has a woman who DJ`s a metal night with her husband
every week and another chap who loves black metal ( amongst other stuff ). A
couple of others are into alt / punk stuff. I had expected to be surrounded
by people into chart music!
Sometimes when I`m off I make a playlist for the day, mixing it up with some
classic albums and new stuff I`ve downlaoded...otherwise I`d likely forget
about some of the recent stuff I`ve grabbed.

You have some sort of problem with real songs, real melody and such?
Kansas is way better than Fairyland.
Tom
With the power of itunes I can tell you my 12 most listened to `09 releases
were
Mastodon - 39
Kreator - 34
Slough Feg - 28
Megadeth - 26
Obscura - 25
Slayer - 19
Augury & Voivod - 18
Anaal Nathrakh / Immortal - 17
Drudkh / Candlemass - 16
My other real favourite album of the year was Blut Aus Nord which racked up
12...it would have been more but I`ve played their entire discography a lot
as well.
Sorry, classic rock sucks.

I have heard several of those many times this year as well. Some
less than you, but so be it. I mean, I don't think I am at 26 listens
for Megadeth yet. The Slayer probably is about right. Augury maybe 10.
Kreator probably 20-25.
Tom
Slayer - 9
Anaal Nathrakh - 1
Drudkh - Some songs 4, the rest 2 ( I listened to Blood In Our Wells 8
times this year)
Cadlemass - 15
Not sure who 'cadlemass' is, but I guess they've got the same plays as
Candlemass!
It is hard to remember, I listened to them so many times as to not
be able to count.

heard.

Their 70's out put I think you'd like more.
Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll
Godzilla (surely you've heard this)
Don't Fear the Reaper (and this)
Astronomy
and so on.
It is hard to remember, I listened to them so many times as to not
be able to count.

Really? I`d have thought you`d quite like this album, it`s pretty melodic
for death metal with some catchy riffs and doesn`t mess about. Try the promo
video they released which is a cracking tune IMO

I gave it a listen and found it quite bland...right here and now I can`t
even remember what it sounded like. Going to check out this youtube
link...it`s pretty good actually, not sure why I disliked this originally. I
may have downloaded a different album by them, sure the one I heard had
clean singing and was more power metally. Wondering if I`m even talking
about the same band now!!

been involved in some classics stuff obviously.

Fairyland are horrible.
Here are some of my picks
Anaal Nathrakh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zYSv9IqzEg Chaos
personified.
Blut Aus Nord - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyXpuj-85FI (sound isn`t very
good here )
Drudkh - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYcOz1mA1SE
I can imagine you hating the first ( stick with it though, the vocals aren`t
all the insane screaming it starts with ), can`t really see you liking the
second but quite possibly the third ( whom I`ve seen described as a black
metal Agalloch and aren`t a million miles away from a sort of Enslaved /
Immortal hybrid. Although saying that I think Bomber likes this and hates
those two so what do I know... ).
Have you heard Gama Bomb yet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3si-5eo5t8Y&feature=related
They heavied it up on the new album. I think that's why I recommended this
one. The other ones have the same vocalist but he does more singing.

It's not top ten material for me but I thought it was alright. Not sure why
Tom's comparing them to Kansas. Two totally different types of music. It's

Blut Aus Nord are certainly not run of the mill. Their back catalogue is all
over the place, they rarely record a similar sounding album...although this
is back to the style of their 2nd album several years back. I`d say they`re
one of the most interesting, experimental and boundary pushing black metal
bands about...although they`ve lost me at times ( Mort was an awful album ).
I`d say download the new one ( Memorium Vetusta II and The Work Which
Transforms God ( which is generally recognised as one of the classics of the
scene from recent years ))...the noisiest thing they`ve done is probably The
Mystical Beast of Rebellion, the newer one is more Emperor style
atomsphericy. Mort and Odinist are just bizarre.

Yep, last 4-5 months I`ve re-discovered a love for black metal in
particular. Might be to do with me listening to music at home more than in
the car...black metal isn`t really driving music.

I don't think I'll be buying anything from these guys. The Work Which
Transforms God annoyed me to the point of swearing at it while I deleted it.
It sounded like they recorded it on a warped tape machine with the guitars
going up and down. I felt sea sick. Mort sounds like an ambient headphone
album. Odinist was rather annoying. The new one seems pretty straightforward
so I'm letting that play right now. I guess it's my turn to get old. Black
Metal is really sad these days compared to what it used to be. Where's that
new Burzum!
Sodom, Voivod, Death Angel, Destruction, Nuclear Assault Records are
better than megadeth/metallica IMO Can't fuck with slayer/kreator
tho. I'd also rate morbid visions higher, perhaps even ahead of
possessed (although I may be overly harsh on this as Seven Churches is
possibly the best metal album ever IMO. I rate it as high as RiB)
PS is my favorite album on that list, so there we disagree :)
But I too would rate the Slayer, Kreator, Sodom, Dark Angel, Nuke
Assault, Possessed, Sepultura, Candlemass and possibly even Voivod
over MOP (I rate Voivod as a band _far_ higher than Metallica, but
Rooooarrrr is one of their weaker records).
Which shouldn't be a big surprise, given my well documented minority
opinion on the record.
e.
--
if RTL had been released in '86, different story...
Not a huge fan of the 'deth. As I've grown older I've realized slayer
is the only one of the big 4 that I actually love, and the rest I find
horribly overrated, but feel a tinge of nostalgia for how my ignorant
teenage self thought they were the best thing ever as I wasn't as

I don't think voivod has weaker records, just ones you're more in the
mood for at the time.
SSS - Dividing Line
Kreator - Hordes of Chaos
SunnO))) - Monoliths & Dimensions
Magrudergrind - S/T
Yob - The Great Cessation
Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation
Slayer - World Painted Blood
Church of Misery - Houses of the Unholy
Panzerbastard - 2006-2009
Anaal Nathrakh - In the Constellation of the Black Widow
Best Reissue - Nirvana 2002 - Recordings 1989-1991

I`ve always loved the big 4. As I`ve gotten older I probably appreciate
early Megadeth even more...to the point I largely prefer them to Metallica
now. I`ve always loved the raaw stuff as well though, loved all that early
Kreator and Celtic Frost stuff from the get go.

What, across their entire discography? I wouldn`t have had you down for
someone who gets much from Angel Rat. RRROOOAAARRR is my least favourite
Voivod after Phobos...which are the only 2 I rarely go back to.
7 Churches is remarkable...although even in a 1985 list I`d put it behind
Hell Awaits...and I`d have to um and ah for a while over it and Bonded By
Blood for the no.2 spot.
None of these have even come close to Metallica at their best (MoP/
RTtL). If they had found a half decent vocalist maybe I would have
said the same thing about deth. Mustaine is far better guitarist than
Kork and James. Oh what could have been.
E.
I would only rate RiB above MoP, but that changes year in year out. My
top 3 thrash albums rotates between RiB,MoP and RtL.

Oh the winds changed and they have swapped places again.....
I think Mustaine is one of the greatest vocalists in metal.
I don't really like hetfield or mustaine.
Thank you for confirming your actual level of deafness. I had you
pegged for slightly tone deaf, now I have moved you to "totally
fucking deaf as well as stupid".

At least Hetfield when he used to growl didn't sound like a nasally
whiney cunt. He has more whine in his voice than all the angst
teenagers have that ever listened to grunge or emo shite.

A charming outburst. Whilst on a purely technical level Mustaine can hardly
compete with the Halfords, Dios and Dickinsons of the world his voice is a
great pissed off sounding thrash metal one. It didn`t work so well when
Megadeth softened their sound ( although judging by the sales figures it
would seem many would disagree with me here ) but when making the music he`s
best at it suits perfectly. The first 4 Megadeth albums are pretty much
perfect thrash metal and would not improve with a different vocalist.
I would be pissed off too if I sang like that and was ginger..;-)
There are very few thrash or other type of vocalist I like less. So
just about any other vocalist would be an improvement.

You said classic rock sucks, as a reply to my talking about Kansas,
and I just said Kansas is way better than Fairyland.

BG probably is better than Fairyland. But I don't know for sure. I
will have to ask Ian.

Got to be excellent, then.

I like his vocals, most of the time, but he decides to try to
actually sing occasionally. That never works out well. He should stick
to spitting out the words with pissy venom and attitude.

I don't dislike it, I just don't think it's something that is going
to mesh with what I am really listening to a lot right now.

Ian, it seems like you just can't even agree with yourself posting
like this. This too isn't bad.

Not wanting to play for some reason. So I loaded a different song.
Regression to the Mean. Nice. Nice deep vocals.

Gets my feet moving though. Can't hear the vocals well in this.

This says sample in the title, and is a 7 minute video, how long is
the whole song? This also gets my feet moving. I believe these would
all get Ritchie's feet moving as well. To the exit.

I'm going to have to get rich, and invent the 36 hour day to have
enough time to listen to all this stuff. Like this. What does Bomber
know?
