In the tune CIrcular BreathIng, Ian wrItes:

"Matchbox cItyscape below----
I watch Lowry matchstIck fIgures go.
Caught In the tImeless flow of dIscreet sIlence."

L.S. Lowry or the township of Lowry?

The painter I believe - at least as far as the faint memories of
something I read in the last couple days suggest.

Clearly painter. Lowry is famous for painting mastick men (eg Brian & Micheal's
78 UK hit). as for Lowry town I'm afraid it isn't taht well known in UK !

I'd guess it's Lowry the painter IMO. One of several references to
the works of artists found on "TSLOB".

Others: Rousseau, Constable, and indirectly, Flint.

And another one indirectly; Balraker.
The inspiration for Better Moon.
Who knows anything about Ballbreaker, err Balraker?

"You can keep all your smart modern writers,
just give me William Shakespeare.
And you can keep the clever modern painters,
I'll take Rembrandt, Titian, Da Vinci and Gainsborough"

Ray Davies - The Kinks - "20th Century Man"

I'm not sure about getting lines 1 & 3 right, but I certainly
understand where he was coming from.

Well this is an easy attitude to take. If Kinks fans would have said
"Keep your Beatles, your Kinks, your Stones, your Led Zeps, your J-Tulls,
give me Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Debussy; we'd all be talking on
alt.music.Ludwig, and Ray Davies would be working at McDonalds (and
Haasmic would have to figure out clever ways to work the word "Ludwig"
into his posts)!

There are a lot of great artists LIVING (against all odds- especially in
the USA) right now! This idea of "all good art was made a long time ago
by dead artists" simply isn't true and it greatly hinders those artist
alive today who are attempting get known for their art. I compete with
dead guys every day. Most art galleries show dead artists because their
work is worth more not necessarily because it's better, but because there
are a limited number available and there will be no more.

Living artists KFA!

Get to the point.

Now I better understand the rag you have been on recently. The
dead reality of "being an artist" is the dead reality of living
in a world short on recognition and compensation.

I compete with

Managers of major art exhibition halls, both public and private,
do not make decisions on based on artistic availability. they
base it on pure and simple art economics. The dead sell...the
living rarely does.

Was that a cover song of the 1968 Staus Quo hit 'Pictures of Matchstick
Men'?

It seems that Satus Quo may also have been influenced by Lowry's
paintings.
