Rarebird Nine
1. Ryan Star - "Back Of Your Car" (original song)
He was the eliminatee who received the most "fan favorite" votes. It
was good to see him, and to hear his original again.
2. Toby Rand - "Karma Police" by Radiohead
"Throw It Away" (original song)
The Radiohead song sounded iffy at first, but once he found his way it
worked fine. His original is still fun.
3. Lukas Rossi - "Fix You" by Coldplay
"Headspin" (original song)
His voice sounded different than usual for the Coldplay song. And I'm
glad he played "Headspin" a different way this time (acoustic and
low-key). Having said that, I wasn't thrilled by his set.
4. Dilana - "Roxanne" by the Police
"Supersoul" (original song)
She did okay with her arrangement of "Roxanne", which is not an easy
song to pull off (ask Chris Pierson). Her original still sounds average
to me.
5. Magni - "Hush" by Deep Purple
"When The Time Comes" (original song)
"Hush" was awesome! Loved his vocal dynamics. His original is good,
too. Tommy Lee likes Dilana's original better? Come on.
Who cares who is in the bottom three tomorrow? Does it matter at this
point?

Good to see him again. Good on him with his "Dark Horse" album. Good

Starting a theme of the night, I wasn't overly impressed by the set.
Throw it away is still fun. Karma Police was alright.

And again, I was somewhat underwhelmed. It seemed like he was drowned
out a bit by the background vocals on "Fix You". Headspin was good --
I too am glad he mixed it up going acoustic.

"Roxanne" was better than it had any right to be, given what we saw on
the webisode. Didn't care too much for the arrangement, but she sang
it well. "Supersoul" is still entirely forgetable.
Have I mentioned that I'm entirely bored with the singers running
through the crowd? Expecially 5 foot nothing Dilana -- who the heck
can even see her?

I didn't like "Hush" as much as you (or Dave), but it was good. "When
the Time Comes" was still great. Lyrics aren't much, but his voice is
killer and the song is solid.
They're really, REALLY trying to get folks to not vote Magni. There's
no way, if Tommy is honest with himself, that "Supersoul" is more
memorable than "When the Time Comes".

I can sum my feelings up pretty easily no matter who disagrees with me.
Supernova are fools if they choose anyone but Dilana. The chick has got
it.
That being said, the rest were okay. The only other singer that I
wouldn't mind seeing picked would be Magni and I got the uneasy feeling
tonight that maybe he doesn't really want this gig after all.

roll....... ;-) There's fun in Funeral, though. heh

Tommy clearly loves Lukas and doesn't want Magni. Tough. I'm voting for
Magni....... I'm not swayed by the Tommyhawk.

The show really missed Ryan's energy.
His elimination was a bad decision by SN.
But he's not eligible to win, right?
But his album is available on the Rockstar site? Funky.
OK, he was a better choice for the encore than Zayra.

What he said. Except Karma Police, I dunno, pretty watery.
PROBABLY a bad move by Magni to play second fiddle to Toby, same as a
couple of weeks ago when Toby playing second fiddle to Storm, sucked
the oxygen out of her performance. Toby's strength is performance,
not vocals. I suppose he *could* win on that, but I think he is below
minimum on vocals.

The acoustic Headspin was musically good, but pleeze, the words, ...
The Bowie/Stardust eyes, Lukas is just 1983 gloom glam, way past the
expiration date for moi. And still asphyxiating himself, notice that
Navarro was ready to buy a ticket, but we heard nothing from Jason,
who actually has some musical judgement. Like w Toby, I just can't
see Lukas winning, he doesn't have the vocals.

Ah, Dilana, my love, queen of the stage, and showing how you can own
the whole room. Zow. Roxanne sort of worked out I guess. Again,
politically, mebbe not wise for the others to play backup. And
dressed almost like a normal person! Gawd, but I'd love to see her in
a t-shirt and jeans and no makeup, to see if she could still work her
voodoo.
Speaking of which, she sang part of Roxanne in a mostly non-raspy
voice, I'd still like to hear what she can do with that.

The thing is, I'm as old as Tommy (and then some), and "Hush"
resonates from back in the day, even Dave Navarro is too young to
totally grok it. Good salesmanship, even if the slightly smoothed
arrangement didn't do it for me. And it complemented his original. I
thought. So of COURSE Tommy Lee breaks out the "wrong sauce" again.
Get the man another drink.

I dunno, cuz I have no idea what the rules are.
Last week I said it had to go to Magni, now I think it's about a
tossup between him and Dilana. Maybe the voting will affect the
outcome. I make it about 70/30 Magni. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked
if the voting parallels the order of presentation tonight.
OTOH, I'm not generally a very good prognosticator on these things, so
save your receipt. And the voting doesn't have to parallel the
decision the SN would make. Or does it? I guess I'm not at all
certain Magni will win the vote, just that he'd be the best choice.
The performance show two weeks ago had much better energy and
performances. The lack of direction of this contest is always
evident. But it was still fun, and I guess these four (five?) at
least, get to go on the tour now.
I have to wonder what, if any, advice SN gets offstage towards the
decision.
Well, I think I'll vote a bit, why not?

Dilana had a great comeback tonight, Roxanne was by far my fav
performance of the night. I would like to see her or Lukas win it.
The other two bore me to tears.

like his original, but I feel like we're being force-fed all of the
originals, as they try to come up with something we'll want to buy. I
enjoyed his interaction with Magni - if neither of them get the
Supernova gig, maybe they can form a band together.

The cover was just another Lukas performance - I don't have much to say
about it. I'm not going to change my mind about him at this point, and
I'm sure not going to change anybody else's mind. "Headspin" isn't a
good enough song to survive being stripped down like that - it let us
really hear how shallow it is, lyrically and musically. The band still
acts like he's the second coming of Mick Jagger.

I liked the energy on "Hush" but it might have been a bit too peppy for
a Deep Purple cover. It was nice to hear a band get covered that
hasn't already been done to death. I still like his original It was
laughable that Tommy criticized it for not being memorable, after all
the forgettable slop that has been the Supernova originals. He's still
my favorite, but the writing is on the wall - he was the only one who
got any real criticism, and the only one who didn't have any signs in
the audience advertising his virtues (or at least the only one who
didn't get his signs on TV - either way it's not good for him).

It's only the bottom two that go on the chopping block this time - it
only matters in that somebody could make the final three that they
would otherwise like to get rid of first tomorrow. Basically it
matters a much, or as little as it's always mattered.

of Karma Police. He's top 3 but unlikely the big winner.
Lukas...the majority of the people posting to this site don't get it,
diss him as much as you want but he is a clear favorite of the band,
particularly with Tommy (who let's face it is the frontman of the
band).
Dilana...she was on her deathbed but pulled it out with solid
performances. However, Roxanne wasn't a great fit and her original,
well...is unforgettable.
Magni in my opinion will be the 4th place finisher...he just doesn't
seem to connect with the band.
This will be really popular with the Lukas "anti-fan" club but I think
he is the man...unless the band feels a frontwoman is the way to go

So true.
Nothing quite reveals the farce that is Supernova,
as a simple comparison between Gilby's playing...
and the guitar playing of the lead in the House Band.
That dude is always wailing away, whereas Gilby has yet to play a single impressive note.
Dilana's song did sound better last night.
Originals usually take a few hearings to absorb.

It's morning, and now I'm thinking that was totally on purpose.... the raspy
voice came out for the entire competition for Supernova. But I think she's
thinking she isn't going to be the singer, and she needs to show what else
she can do for the music reps. The rasp "pigeon-holes" her..... her "other
voice" gives her some versatility. Her pitch was pretty near perfect,
without the rasp..... I loved it.

I don't understand it either... in fact, I never will. I'm okay with just
about every choice for the singer, except him. I'd go see Supernova with
three out of the four in the singer role.....

You are spot on with that one..... who is in charge of things? Tommy.
Tommy adores Lukas....couldn't give a damn about Magni (save for his one
"Magni-ficent" comment.) To me, that says a lot.... as much as I don't like
Lukas and find nothing appealing about his voice or his "look," it will
probably be him. You've read it here first, and I will personally eat crow
if I'm wrong. ;-)

this show? Oh yeah, 1 f-ing week!. I'm all for canceling this franchise

Lukas had me early in this competition because I had no clue who he
was, nor what his act was. Now that I've seen the SAME THING WEEK AFTER
WEEK, I've seen enough. He's goofing on you when he sings, it's a
put-on (yes, i've said it before), the whole thing is a sham--the
makeup, the Crispin Glover tone to his voice, his Joe Cocker spasms,
his pseudo-punk wailing. It's a bad concoction. Buh-Bye

Magni wins on Hush alone. That's a cover! As for Tommy's insane comment
about his original not being memorable, it was on target -- and he
should be thankful for that in the sense that it's not catchy pop junk
like Toby's or Ryan's. It's a straight ahead rock song, and btw, it's
better than the four originals they've played so far.
Further down someone makes a point about Gilby and not having played a
memorable note so far. I cannot agree more. Love the guy, saw him play
with GNR a bunch of times and he more than held his own in an
impossible situation. But the guy is no lead guitarist, it's painfully
obvious. The guy in the house band has more chops than him.

I loved the way he brought Magni into the original. My husband and I
felt like we'd pay to go see a band fronted by both Magni AND Toby.
Good job, although it probably wasn't good enough to get SN past their
ridiculous Lukas-love.

Not only was I not thrilled, I was outright bored. Even though I'm not
a fan, Lukas has had some memorable performances. I kept waiting for
him to break out that glorious tenor but all we got was the wussy
falsetto. And I still don't like the original. Of course, SN still
gave him an undeserved tongue bath.

I thought Roxanne was great, and I *loved* the fact that she had the
guys backing her up. It made me sad to think how she wasted two weeks
with her little pity party, and probably cost herself the job, too.
I did like the original song better this week; not sure why.

I thought Hush was awesome too, but I worry that it was too much a
musician's song and too little a singer's song. And, I thought Magni's
original was the best of the night. The guy totally rocks. Tommy Lee
is on drugs.
Unfortunately, if Magni ends up in the bottom two he will definitely be
the one sent packing first, bet on it. I voted for him as much as I
could last night but my computer was having resource issues so it
wasn't working terribly well.

Actually that's a pretty cool line. Don't take it so literally...think
about it. I can't really completely put it into context of the song,
because I don't have all of the lyrics in front of me. But even out of
context of the song I would interpret that to mean that the person he is
talking to/about has done things to damage his trust or respect for them.
I much prefer imagery and allegory to literal lyrics. One reason I have
never been able to get into country music. Always felt like they were spoon
feeding me a message and that just doesn't interest me. Also for the artist
it is definitely to their advantage to paint with as wide a stroke as
possible. That way a song can mean many things to many people.

Unfortunately I have to agree. Tommy Lee has no original musical
direction. When the early Korn and Limp Bisket type music was
big he came out with that Mayhem shit, it sucked. Then the slower,
heavy moody, Staind type music was big and he did his own slow,
heavy moody solo album, it sucked. Now the rock scene is either
metal or the celeb loving cold play stuff, he's jumping on board the
popularity train and Lukas is best for that. Thankfully I believe that
Newsted and Clark will hold him back on his "in the now" musical
direction and come out with there own style of music........what that
type is we don't know so there is no way of us knowing what singer
fits. They do and I'm sure they had their winner/singer pick weeks ago.
On that, I can't make any predictions. For all I know, 6 months ago
they got together for a birthday party at some no name bar in Texas
and the second live act that night was a small, bluesy/rock, throaty female
that had the best performance of her life. A bass player stares to the stage
thinks for a miniute, leans over to a guitar player and asks, 'want to form
a band?' and decided to make some music to fit a female voice.
Who knows??????????
I hope theres a good new band for season 3..........

having listened to all the songs in my car, i think he would be a good
recording artist, but also believe he is the first to go (unless the voting
puts him in the top two).
any of these singers could front Supernova. they all have different looks
and sounds - so they certainly can't complain about getting stuck with
someone they didn't want. if they feel a strong match between one of the
guys and their music vision then they can go that way, but they will
probably hitch their wagon to Dilana figuring she has greatest star
potential.
i don't know too much about Gilby, but i don't see how he can hold down
guitar responibilities in a live power trio + frontman config. too bad they
can't add Navarro (or preferably Rafael).

Magni seemed ticked off at T. Lee's loopy remarks last night. Kudos to
him for standing up for his own song writing. Considering how mediocre
all of Supernova's originals have been thus far, I think he response
was justified and on target.
One fact that many of the people watching either don't know or at least
forget is that Magni (with his own band) has already earned 5 gold
albums throughout Scandinavia/Europe - considering there are only about
300,000 people in Iceland -- and the fact that you must sell the same
amount there as you would in the states to go "gold" -- that's quite
an accomplishment. Basically, this guy is already a pro...so it
wouldn't surprise me if he's gotten a little tired of the whole "Tommy
boy" show. Hopefully RSSN has given him the international media
exposure he needs to take his music global. He seems like such a nice
guy and arguably has the best voice of the competition. I actually
think he'll fare better if SN passes him over.
Therein lies my own problem with Rockstar SN. Despite enjoying this
years performers (and loving the house band) I think most of the
vocalists could do better one their own that tied down to SN for the
next year. Admittedly, I've never been a metal fan (lean more towards
darkwave/goth/industrial) but I can't imagine ever spending money to
see the bloated ego that is Pamela Anderson's ex, regardless of whom
Supernova chooses as a frontman/woman. Throughout the competition I
gotten the feeling that SN is, at best, a side project for these guys
until something better comes along. (I certainly hope Jason is able to
escape) Maybe they will surprise me...but right now SN just seems like
a directionless ship.
Imo the chance to hear the finalists with the house band is the main
selling point of the whole SN tour. (I could definitely see spending
money on the house band if they promised to limit Supernova's stage
time, heh)
I agree with posters who've predicted that Magni will leave first
tonight. Of the three remaining, I think each of them can use this
opportunity to launch his/her respective careers. Lukas will be hit the
hardest if they don't choose him >:[ SN has praised this guy so much
from the very first episode that he has every reason to believe the gig
is his. (I didn't watch RS much last summer but I've read here that
they did the same false set up and switch last season) Toby's come a
long way performance wise and he's good enough to continue on, although
his voice is really is more rock than metal. (and thats not a bad
thing!) Dilana probably needs this win the most, being the oldest,
fronting SN could be the boost her career really needs. Oh
well...regardless of the outcome, its been pretty good t.v.

they would have recruited the house band guitarist as their lead guitar.

I also like it when bands spread the lead vocal duties around. You
don't see that as much as you used to, but I can think of a few from
the '60s and '70s that sold tons of records doing that.

this year's contestants. If these were truly the "15 best unsigned

Toby- Karma Police
The beginning of this song was very shaky, but I think he found a good
place not too far into it. I just can't find any fault with him. He
brings the vocals when he needs too, has a blast & his stage presence
draws you in. Radio friendly original is a plus. If he doesn't get the
lead, maybe he'll follow Ryan's footsteps or we'll hear a version of his
song on the Supernova album!
Lukas- Fix You
My favorite Lukas week by far. He didn't seem like he was straining &
his toned down original was a nice change. How much do they really care
about being understood? Have a hard time understanding & watching Lukas.
I'd prefer to understand him, but hell the songs aren't that great to
begin with, maybe it's better we don't know what the actual lyrics are
or what he's singing about!
Freaky-D- Roxanne
Now this is the voice she should stick with. When she exhibits some
control with the scary voice, she takes on a whole different singing
dynamic which is so very cool. Maybe she thinks her scary voice is what
works for her and it's 'her thing'. Nobody else sounds like that, but I
don't know that many people who could tolerate the scary voice for very
long all the time.
Her original wasn't very good. They summed it up the first time -
cliche'. Ironic for the person who wants to stand out and be different
to resort to the already done & normal things. The rearrangement was
simply done because it's obvious she can't hit the high notes.
Magni- Hush
He is the only one who did the type of songs and music I listen to the
most & rocked out. His version of Hush was excellent! He's a natural
when it comes to the singing and I like the image of him being himself
with a tad bit of edgy-ness. His stage presence could use some work.
Come to think of it he looked more comfortable behind Toby than when he
was up front himself! Notice that?
Was happy to see Ryan get the encore, but I was 99.9% sure he would. He
got to promote the single, his album & show a different, more gracious
disposition. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who gets a bum deal
deserves a car! lmao He's better off on his own.
I still think Freaky D should have left before Storm. The more I think
about it, the more it doesn't really matter to me who fronts the band as
long as it's not Dilana. Still routing for Toby as the front runner.
Throw Magni in the mix & Lukas who everyone seems to think is going to
win. We'll see tonight!
Someone asked me if I'd go see them and I said probably if the price was
right & they came around here. I think it would be a good energy show
and I'm always up for live music!

I disagree...and that's ok. I think Dilana is AMAZING. I'd like to
see her have her own band. She doesn't seem like the type for
supernova. Lukas is growing on me, which I hate. I don't want to like
him...Magni is a fantastic vocalist...but again not right for the
band...too clean. The only one left, IMO is Toby...I don't care for
him that much but he "fits" IMO with the band...
