Rock Star SUPERNOVA: Results (9/6/06)
Rarebird Nine
Supernova original. It's arguably the best SN original we've heard so
far, and I think the reason is because Magni elevated it.
Toby got the encore (and a new set of wheels) for his original song
"Throw It Away". It still rocks. I liked it better the first time;
maybe the element of surprise is gone.
All five contestants were in the bottom three at some point last night.
Magni and Toby were safe.
Storm was up first, singing Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". Not bad,
and it's good to see her scale it down after last night.
Dilana was up next. She rearranged Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want
Me" as a fitful punk-rock song. It got off to a shaky start, but once
you realized what she was up to it worked okay. Supernova gave her a
standing O.
Lukas was in the bottom three! It's about time! He did his original
song "Headspin" again. He's confident, I'll give him that. But the song
made a lesser impression tonight. Was it a lesser performance, or is
the song already getting old the second time?
When it came time for the axe to fall, Lukas was safe, so one of the
ladies had to go. Tommy Lee didn't have the heart, so Jason Newsted had
to deliver the news this time.
Storm Large is the one who didn't make it to the final round.

For me the song was dull - nothing against Magni but it was nothing
special.

It's a catchy tune and he's cute and all but that's about it.

Ugh. I thought this was a waste of time. For crikies sake, I could have
sung what she sung.

This is a blah song but Dilana can sing pretty much anything and she'll
grab my attention. The beginning was rough, tho. Sounded like she and
the band were on a different page.

It's great he sang a song about his mother. Now if anyone can tell me
what the hell it was about I'll thank you greatly. I know she makes his
Headspin but what else does/did she do? Is it a love or hate song? If
he'd take the dirty socks out of his mouth maybe I could understand
what the heck he was singing about.

The only surprise here was that only one singer was ousted. I thought,
with only one week left, that we'd see more than one leave tonight.

the other originals, which I thought were more worthy of the encore.
"Headspin", for example, needs some work to make it a great song, but

Kudos to Storm for going out on a high note and being a class act
throughout the competition. Dave confused me tonight by praising last
night's cover and not her original. Or maybe Dave was confused.
Speaking of confused, I guess I am. Why is there a vote next week?

Voters choose one for elimination...gets kicked off early in the show...then
the other three sing a song before the ultimate winner is chosen?
In any case, Supernova has now shown us 4? songs...and none of them are good
enough for radio. This group doesn't have the safety of a catalog to suport
a tour (as INXS did) so how do they expect to make money? I guess they will
do it with gimmicks like having Dave's band on the tour and being the backup
band for Storm's Digital Download version of 'her' original...they are
pulling out all the stops when it comes to trying to wring every penny out
of this...even though it looks like they have next to nothing of value.

It was the best song of the four originals, but that's like being the

You know why? Because it's a catchy piece of garbage that will grate on

something and not delivering. She's a one-trick pony too with her raspy
voice and multiple personalities. Go away, nobody cares.

well. But after the chorus it lost practically all it's appeal. Lukas
is definitely an odd looking guy. The shape of his face or something,
maybe just the big head. He can sing well enough for Supernova I
suppose, but his stage act is wearing thin. The run toward the crowd
like he's drunk and about to fall, and the over pronouncing of some
lyrics just seems to be what he does every performance. As with
American Idol, and last year's Rockstar, I don't think the finalists
are anything special. I watch occasionally (AI mostly because my wife
likes it), but don't see myself buying any cds or tickets for this
band. Certainly not for any products of American Idol.

Rock isn't played on radio these days anyway. I haven't heard anything
by Panic Channel on my local "everything alternative" radio station,
99X in Atlanta.

Do you really think so? I just get the impression that the guys are
not that wild about him. Dave Navarro definitely is not (not that he
has any say in the voting, as he keeps reminding us). And Jason stood
up, pointed at Toby and said "you're the (or "my", hubby and I disagree
on this) man".
Like I've said before, I'm not so sure I want to consign Magni to even
a year of touring with SuperNova, but I definitely want him to make it
in the American music scene.

Meh. The song really did nothing for me, even with Magni singing. I
didn't seem to fit the mould of the previous SN songs, either.

Iceland must be pulling triple time on the voting! :-) They were
easily the best of the performance show -- good on them making it to
the finals.

Hey, the song worked for Marty Casey. She did a good job, and poured
some emotion into it.

I don't think her singing deserved a stanging ovation, but I give the
gal props for performing on one leg. It was a fun little arrangement,
but like most things Dilana, I don't think it would stand up to repeat
plays. It's a great little number to throw into a live performance to
have fun with the crowd, but not something I'd listen to outside of a
concert setting.

*sigh*. We finally get to see Lukas in the bottom three, where he can
choose any song he wants (OK, I'm sure there are limits), and he
decides to give us one he already sang. I was hoping for something
new. That said, Headspin is still a fine tune, he delivers it with
emotion, and carries on in typical Lukas fashion. If you like Lukas,
you liked this performance -- otherwise, you likely didn't.

They probably made the right decision. Had Dilana stayed in her funk,
I suspect it would have been a different outcome. Storm just never
built up any momentum coming down the stretch.
Random thoughts and questions:
Dilana having fun is so much more entertaining than the Dilana
Self-Pity Party.
Did they not edit Dave's confusion over Storm's 'cover' vs 'original'
to make the show seem more live?
Any bets on who's coming back? Call me crazy, but I'd like to see
Zayra again, but only if she promises not to sing one of my favourites.

want to be in her backing band? Huzawah? I'd give Stormynova a
listen.

Here's a little insight on the tears: The song was "Wish You Were Here"
and Jason was crying because he was wishing James and Lars were there
with him and his career hadn't taken this cheesy turn into reality
TV-created bands. My God, to be a fly on the wall of the Hetfield and
Ulrich homes watching SN with them. Oh what great fun.

It's a TV show; it's a put-on. She's giving America what it wants,

Heard just the last half, seemed utterly dull like the previous.
Here's the thing about Magni, or rock and roll, or any performance
art, if there's something in the music, you want the performer to do
his job and "disappear", if the music is nothing, you need the
"singer" to bite the head off chickens. This was a chicken song,
nothing Magni could do about it.

Mildly surprised (and pleased) to see Lukas down there with the girls.

She did not sing it in a SN mode.
However, all the SN members sat there shivering in flashbacks I don't
even want to know any more about. Pink Floyd was a Big Deal back in
the day, kidz.

OK, but it was perfect for this situation.
Start was OK, too, tho she was a half-note off on the acapella, but
that's no sin.
Again, was it Jason who seemed ready to jump up and Do Something when
the song title was announced? Weird.
Look, the SN band members are obviously more affected by the
performances of Dilana and Storm, than by any of the guys. Toby and
Lukas are indifferent singers, if good performers, Magni is just too
professional to interest them. Frankly, SN are in a bind.

It seems to me, what do you think, that Lukas really likes this song.

Storm was off the tracks after the Dave and Tommy "wrong sauce"
comments, and why not? I think it totally appropriate that Dave and
SN were busy jumping on her bandwagon at the end. If only they had
any brains or taste, this would have been the finale.
But you are right, Storm has not blown the roof off the dump the last
few weeks. Then again, nobody else has, either. But for Storm
especially, she needs PRODUCTION HELP. This is something the CBS
powers that be need to consider. On American Idol, TPTB slowly ramp
up the production values from week to week, and it is not the
contestants that do it. The RockStar performance show eight days ago
was fantastic, but apparently it was just coincidence or something.
(Maybe the show misses Ryan!?) Storm is apparently a reasonably
well-adjusted adult, which OK, maybe explains why she didn't win? But
she's very talented, has a great voice, and needs some professional
production help to look big league on stage. And she didn't get it.
Dilana and Toby are natural performers, Magni is a total pro, and
Lukas is a competent freak show. Dilana and Magni have better voices
but Dilana's rasp is maybe too much, and her natural voice - well, it
hasn't been given a chance, so forget it. Magni wins. How 'bout
that?
Or else, when it comes down to it, SN will give someone a crown, but
record with most of the top 10. Probably a better deal for all
involved.

Absolutely. It would have been perfect for two weeks ago, too. If she
could have just jumped from her stupid comments to a fun performance
like this and bypassed the whole angst ridden episodes, I would
probably have enjoyed her performances more. But maybe that wouldn't
make good TV?

Seems to me she's a well adjusted person who's not prone to theatrics.
They showed that side early when Jenny was stuck in bed with a bug of
some kind and Storm helped her out. And more recently when she
comforted Dilana.

Yeah, well...yeah...Still, I prefer my singers to remain on stage, and
not wander through the crowd. Everyone can see the stage (or should be
able to, in a good venue). Not many can see the singer when he's
running through the fans.

hehe. Many aspects of this year's show does seem 'tacked on', don't
they? It does seem like they're making much of this up as they go
along.

I certainly would never call Cheap Trick a punk band. And while they
have done a few songs that probably could be considered punk, "I Want
You To Want Me" most definitely is not one of them.
I find both Dilana's and Lukas' voices to be raspy and irritating. Thats
not to say that they haven't turned in a few performances that better
showcased their vocal potential, but they keep going back to that raspy
sound. I sure wouldn't want to listen to an entire concert of that, and
I'm betting Supernova won't go for either of them for that reason among
others.
Magni and Toby deserved to be the top two last night. They have the best
voices and the least baggage. I can't guess which of them might come out
on top, but I think either would be a good choice for the band.

totally clear on that), it's all just speculation. With INXS it was
slightly easier. We knew their back catalog....we could "guess" who would be
a good fit, based on that...and that they weren't going to stray much from

they said early on that Supernova wasn't going to be a metal band. But

To my ear, Magni's voice would be great in a metal band. Toby would be
great in a band that is oriented towards a more melodious sound, but
still hard rock.
Maybe their real strategy is more like "take the money and run". Put out
one album, do a tour, and then unless things really click just go on to
another project. Time will tell.

Thought there would be a double elimination. Unfortunately, that didn't
happen which means Dilana will be around for at least another week. UGH
Seriously, Storm has outperformed her the last few weeks. What are they
thinking?!
Magni sang the Supernova original. Again, nothing too spectacular, but I
think it's the best song so far. So with that, I knew he was safe this
week.
Toby did the encore & I fully expected that. If it would have been
anyone else, my thought would have been that something is not right! I
can hear Throw It Away on the radio. Pretty cool how he won a brand new
car, too. I was sure Dilana would have a few reasons why it should have
been her instead. boohoo
Storm did Floyd's Wish You Were Here & I think that did not work in her
favor even though it was a nice version. Marty killed it. Was wondering
if the same result of her leaving would have happened had she rocked it
out again.
Dilana was next doing Cheap Trick's I Want You To Want Me 'punking' it
out. LMAO The beginning was horrible. Dedicating it to her fans made me
roll my eyes & jumping into the crowd with her injury was just stupid.
Storm should have stayed simply because of her solid performances.
Lukas did Headspin again and dedicated it to his Mother. I'm actually
starting to like him more than I did before. Still he's not my top
choice. I like that he had the balls to do his original again and run
with it. Even understood more parts of the song the 2nd time around. LoL
Tommy that candy ass couldn't even do the elimination and had to pass it
off to Jason to be the bad guy. We know what happened next. Bye bye
Stormy. Despite her sexual persona, I think she handled the elimination
with class. Very cool that they want to work with her in the future, so
then why wouldn't she be right for the band?!

She's a pro performer. Solid. I found her comments about how earlier in the
competetion she was trying to be sexy and now she was now showing her inner
freak to be interesting, and there was certainly a difference in her attire
and attitude. She felt real this week, and her last song was quite touching,
even if it wasn't her best singing ever. Too bad Stupernova didn't like her
real gritty self better than her rock goddess schtick. She's not right for
the band, but they all want to play on her tracks. Huh?

Lukas looks short, but he stands beside Storm, he's almost as tall as she is.
Dilana's head is bit oversized for her body, but compared to Lukas', her head
is a grapefruit. It's that big head and that funny little nose that make him
look short, I think.

They have the architecture of the series drawn out in advance. I doubt
there's much improvisation with the schedule, barring circumstances beyond
their control. They knew from the start that they'd dedicate so much time to
eliminated contestants in the finale. How they milk the timeslot is flexible:
crowd fave, votings fave, most outrageous character etc. Think they'll have
Zayra in a catsuit playing bongos on Tommy Lee's ass?
Magni is so not right for the band. He's just there to give the proceedings
some class.
As for Toby ... if Stupernova picks him, they're getting what they deserve.
And Tommy can feel up his ass anytime he wants. Poor dumb beefcake Toby.
They would never pick a chick, so Dilana's out. Thank gawd she tore her calf
muscle. They can use that as an excuse.
That leaves Lukas. Much lower maintenance than Dilana. Is not a woman. Would
not get lost on his way to the washroom like Toby probably does ... and
unlike Magni, he's not drooling over a baby, and has skunky asymmetrical punk
hair and does that kewl makeup and rock clothes thing. What's up with that
white belt? His clothes, hair and makeup are straight out of the mid 80's.
His lyrics are inscrutible, even when he explains them. He is right for
Stupernova.
If he wins it's 2-0 for the Canadians. We are such a fabulously talented
nation. There's more culture here than there is in a tub of Duhnone yogourt,
eh.

No more so than the average guy, I would wager. The song (as I
interpret it) is about issues he has with his mom. Show me a bloke who
no longer has issues with his mother, and I'll read you the date of his
death from his headstone.

Um....not sure where this came from, but OK. I'm sure his hair style
has something to do with it too.

I'm sure they do, but it just *seems* like things are a little 'off the
cuff' or 'by the seat of their pants'. The 'Supernova plays a song
with a contestant' bit seemed tacked on. On at least one elimination
show, they skipped the encore entirely. Stuff like that. Maybe
they're trying to make it feel a little more real, and less polished?

Dude can sing, for sure. His old band "Shape" has some tracks on their
site. Not bad. His new band, A Moti Sol, IIRC, are not quite my cup
of tea. If they were going for straight up musicianship, he's the
obvious choice. If they're going show over substance, than any of the
others are a better choice.

Toby will put on a fun show, I'm sure. He has an energy and enthusiasm
that can engage the crowd. They could do worse.

I personally don't think that they should choose her, but they would
probably have some success if they did.

Even though I think he's the one they'll choose, I'm almost wishing
that they won't. After hearing some of his stuff with Rise Electric
and Cleavage, I'd like to here more of his own stuff.
