On occasion, you may be tempted to express your opinion on technical issues
about which you are ignorant. My advice is to resist that tempation and to
keep your mouth shut, unless you want to have your ignorance exposed by an
internationally-recognized and well-established authority.
A good example of such a situation is my post to alt.sci.physics on September
22, 2006. In that post I stated "Since a speaker will be reproducing the
sound in the wave file, and a poweramp will be driving the speaker, my
understanding is that in order to provide a 6 dB increase in SPL, it will
require a 6 dB increase in amplifier power."
Unfortunately the very same day, Angelo Campanella, a well known acoustical
consultant, and acknowledged expert in the field, stated " Somebody give
Mike a crash course...better make that a comprehensive course...
on decibel math.
Bottom line, if, like me, you don't know what you are talking about, it's
best to keep your mouth shut and avoid having your ignorance exposed.

That depends on your perspective. If you understand the relationships among volgate, power, SPL and dBs, it doesn't really matter. 6dB corresponds to a doubling of voltage, a doubling of free-field pressure and a quadroupling of power (both electrical and acoustic).
The absurd and idiotic assertion that Mike Porky Rieves made in alt.sci.physics.acoustics, for which he was taken to task, was "a 6dB increase in voltage or current would result in a 16 fold increase in amplifier power."
