best way to learn studio techniques

For Ex:
No recording studio school I know of has part time classes and
requires full time enrollment (and I live in a huge city)
Berklee course online cost $1200 US each. OUCH. Half of it I
probably have figured out myself already so that's real expensive,
real expensive, you would have to take about 10 courses I gather.
I tried books. They explain everything but the recording process:
what you really need to know.

There is a strange logic which abounds in a lot of Web Talk [groups
etc.] that all the knowledge is available on the Net for free ... it
certainly is not. "Anything 'free' is worth nothing" is a phrase
worth remembering.
Considering that a brain surgeon will spend 18 years studying before
he ever gets to see, let alone operate on, a brain ... and spend a
huge amount of money learning, it continues to astonish me that guys
can expect to stumble into our highly sophisticated, knowledge based
business and behave and act like the guys who have gone the brain
surgeon route, studied their craft and spent an inordinate amount of
money learning.
When you say 'ouch' at the amount asked by Berklee and I consider what
I have spent in my career, I sit back and smile.
The magic phrase to consider is that you have to 'learn how to
learn' ... and that involves learning what to spend, when to spend and
how to spend it. I still will spend, even at my stage of the game.

It is also worth considering that I once employed a guy fresh from
qualifying in a University Degree course on sound technology and he
couldn't wire a XLR plug [now don't say you couldn't either? grin!]
Most colleges have hugely expensive equipment [usually the wrong kind]
with tutors who have never had any success whatsoever in their lives
and are steeped in 60's, 70's Rock 'N Roll. Distance Learning
colleges mostly have manuals and courses written in 1976 and never
updated [I can tell you the good ones].

A blank canvas is best ... that way you don't have to unlearn all the
disastrous habits and techniques that the self taught, 'picked it up
on the way' guys have. Universally flawed and dangerous. A recipe

Think of it as a Chemistry Class back at school ... you need the text
books and the learning to give you the basic, correct theory [so
important despite what the equipment manufacturers and other group
contributors may say] ... then you will need the teacher to actually
demonstrate the experiments [recording]. And these demonstrations
should be of the latest, most commercial and money making recording
techniques and systems available.
I now stand back, having lit the blue touch paper and wait for the
explosion of wrath .... [grin!]
'Learn how to Learn' ... 'be prepared to pay for a $fortune making
career' ... then learn from the best money making guys who will share
their knowledge. [hard to find!]
Being afraid to spend will only bring you to the level of all the
others who were afraid to spend... logical?

based courses (including spammers to this NG) who have no proven
record of successfully mentoring. If you think you have to pay, then
be careful out there. You could finish up paying for 50 year old
information!
