The Sex Pistol’s former manager Malcolm McLaren was a guilty
pleasure of mine. I loved how he took a no-talent scruffy band from
the streets of London and made them into rock legends. He did by
manipulation of the media and public sentiment. A Sex Pistol concert
had the ambiance of a public hanging and that’s the way Malcolm wanted
it. He knew that the media loved negativity and he exploited that fact
very handily. He created urban myths like the Pistols puking in an
airport, never happened. These were planted stories. Most of the
Pistols were nice guys with the exception of Johnny Rotten, who could
be an anti-social dick.
So is Malcolm a hero or a Svengali anti-hero? Were his methods to
be admired or abhorred? He’d be the first one to admit he did it for
his own wealth and glory. A lot of folks admire that kind of
selfishness that results in windfall profit. After all, bank robbers
of the 1930’s won the American publics admiration during the Great
Depression. He didn’t do it for the sake of good or evil but for
himself. If he did it for the sake of evil, he’d be a manager for some
American politician of the Republican Party. Karl Rove owes his
methods to McLaren. One McLaren method was: shoot yourself in the foot
and claim your enemy did it. McLaren allegedly use to cut him self and
claim he got attacked in the street by tugs. Karl Rove once bugged his
own office and blamed it on Democrats. This Machiavellian shit is
employed daily by Government agencies and Corporations for the sake of
social engineering. Malcolm wanted cash from chaos. He did create a
British punk movement, which in turn influenced American youth. He was
a master of publicity. Karl Rove liked to hurt people to benefit
himself. The only thing they had in common was public trickery.
Malcolm McLaren died in Swiss hospital after fighting cancer last
Thursday. I am sure he is dead. If he does fake his own death! Cool!
